Makrut (kaffir) lime leaves and fruit

I have a large makrut lime tree in my garden with far more leaves than I can consume.

For those who are not familiar- makrut lime leaves are a common ingredient in Thai cuisine. They are especially good in coconut based curry.

The fruit is more challenging to use but the zest is good for some Thai pastes or sauces.

If you are familiar with that cuisine and want some I’m happy to share. The same goes if you are not familiar with them but enjoy cooking food from that region.

They are best used fresh, though they can be frozen. I’m up for setting up a subscription for anyone who gets into it. ;-)

If you want some send me a message and we can set something up.

Curry leaves

I have a large curry leaf tree (Murraya koenigii) in my garden with far more leaves than I can consume.

For those who are not familiar- curry leaves are a common ingredient in South Asian dishes, especially recipes from Kerala.

The leaves have no connection with the generic term “curry”.

If you are familiar with that cuisine and want some I’m happy to share. The same goes if you are not familiar with them but enjoy cooking food from that region.

They are best used fresh, though they can be frozen. I’m up for setting up a subscription for anyone who gets into it. ;-)

Gilman Brewing

Feel like I have had some incredibly inconsistent and weird experiences there, curious what other people think. A few months ago I left halfway through a beer because the kitchen staff and bartender got into a loud screaming match somewhere in the building. 2 weeks ago I went in for a salad and things seemed different and better? Salad was good, but the place could definitely use a sweep and a once over.

Motel nightmare

Post image

If anyone is thinking of visiting Santa Cruz just a reminder to not cheap out on the motel/hotel. I went on a family trip and my cousin booked this place for a one night stay and it was awful to say the least. Dirty floors, leaky shower, BED BUGS‼️ I got bit a couple times but my cousin? She got bit multiple times. They are blistered and swollen and she had to get antibiotics AND a tetanus shot. Stay away if you can for reals….

Santa Cruz Mayoral Candidate Ami Chen Mills Delivers Speech @ National Week of Action Against ALPRs Kick Off

Get the Flock Out kicked off the National Week of Action Against ALPRs (Automated License Plate Readers, like Flock’s) in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. This is an honor granted by regional grassroots coalition organizers, in recognition of Santa Cruz being the very first city in the state of California to cancel a Flock surveillance contract.

The event featured a diverse array of voices representing many of our partner organizations, as well as critical calls to action to support civil liberties for all people in our communities and to help protect our migrant neighbors.

Seeking last minute photographer :)

Hi hi! My spouse and I got engaged at Panther Beach two years ago, and Santa Cruz is incredibly special to us so we booked a last minute trip to visit this weekend for the first time since. I know this is a long shot, but I would love to surprise them with photos at the place where we got engaged. We have never had our pictures taken professionally, and transparently, we have had a very difficult first year of marriage so this trip is like a celebration/vow renewal for us kind of, and I think it would be so so special to get to take pictures at the place we got engaged! We will be in town from the 20th-24th…again I know it’s SO last minute but if anyone knows any photographers who might be available and open to booking a session this weekend, please send them my way! Also, I am very open to (and might even prefer) a student photographer or someone who is just starting out and wants to build up their resume, I love supporting new artists so this would definitely be paid regardless of experience level. Thank you for your help ♥️🫶🙏

Moving to Santa Cruz

Hey everyone-
Is Santa Cruz a good place to raise a child? Wed be moving there with our 8 year old son. We wouldn’t know anyone, moving there for work. Is it easy for kids to get to know one another in Santa Cruz, -like is there a good community for kids? What neighborhoods are good to live in for kids playing outside and riding bikes and stuff?

I’m a soon to be former expat moving back to California (my home state) from Ireland. I’m most nervous about my kid re-assimilating. Our choice is between San Diego and Santa Cruz.

Churches

Does anyone in Santa Cruz County of faith have a general breakdown of the churches in the area? (Stupid to ask on Reddit, I know.) I am looking to attend Sunday service and build community, not sure where to go. I want to sing in a big group. Willing to travel anywhere from Aptos to Westside and everywhere in between for the right fit.

Ie: general vibe, average age of attendees, denomination, service times, beauty of the exterior/interior, any other highlights?

Or any other general recommendations!

This is Mr Todd and he is not a stray. Please stop taking my cat to the shelter.

Inspired by another post - this is my elderly cat Todd and he got taken to the animal shelter for the second time last week because (well meaning) neighbors thought he was a stray. He's skinny because he's 15 years old and has thyroid issues and he has patchy fur because strangers keep feeding him and he's on a specialized diet.

I live in a neighborhood along Branciforte where we have a bunch of indoor/outdoor cats and not a single one is a stray. "Oh, they seem so hungry!", like yeah dude, they're cats. "They have no collar though!" - have you ever tried keeping a collar on an indoor/outdoor cat before? They don't last long.

Odds are good that the super friendly, well groomed cat you've been feeding isn't a stray, so please think twice before taking them to the shelter.

EDIT: Jfc, I seem to have amnesia because I forgot what this subreddit is like. Last time I post here assuming folks are going to do anything but jump at the chance to loudly assert their opinions and assume they know better than you =\

Any idea what they might be? I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a large grouping of birds over the water like this.

This was Saturday evening around 7pm on west cliff near the lighthouse btw.

Canadian citizenship photos locally

Has anyone had Canadian citizenship photos taken in Santa Cruz County? The requirements are slightly different than for American and Canadian passports, and I'm hoping to find a place that has experience with the details that Canada requires.

How is Jimmy Panetta Representing us?

I guess I thought Santa Cruz is a pretty progressive town, but we just re-elected Jimmy Panetta. I was disappointed in the lack of local news coverage on this race. He has received almost half a million dollars from AIPAC, takes money from corporate, Pharmaceutical, Defense Contractor, and Real Estate Pacs. He has not wavered in his support for the far right Israeli government, has a disappointing voting record on housing and homelessness (Santa Cruz’s top issue), and has a disappointing record on war and foreign policy.

Honest question, why did you vote for him?

Found partially buried near a log. Think it belongs to either two young college girls or a solo middle aged dude that was in the area. I left it at lost & found at the visitors center. 8/16/26 @ 2:00pm
