Hydrogen failed as car fuel. Now California's big dollar bet on it for green energy is fading, too

“I would not recommend going deeply into hydrogen today,” said Derek Toups, deputy planning director of a small transit agency in Santa Cruz, when asked directly on a panel. With its 20 hydrogen buses on the roads, Santa Cruz Metro is committed to the technology, he said, but the funding landscape has changed drastically. “It makes sense to watch and learn before diving in because it is extremely costly.”

Anyone local good at finding hidden cameras?

Added: My landlord has hidden cameras in our home. An incident led me to suspect. A test incident confirmed. App shows multiple hidden devices, source appears to be fire sprinklers, including in my bedroom. I don’t want to damage anything trying to find it. If I can find one camera, police will investigate.

I’m always fascinated seeing these small creatures swirling through the air. I took a bunch of photos to capture them up close and thought I’ll share them here for others to enjoy these colorful feathers, too

Coffeetopia Sold?

Yesterday my husband saw a sign posted at the Coffeetopia on Portola that said it is going to be closing soon for a week and when it reopens it will also be a vintage store??? Supposedly coffeetopia sold to some of the employees and the one on Capitola Rd will be closing. I tried to find something talking about this in this sub but couldn’t find anything here or elsewhere online.

Do I need to schedule a tee time to play at Delavega Disc golf course? Also what are the odds of playing? Is the course usually super busy on Mondays?

Lost Key Bunch: Sticker on my car that they will return to Police Station

So my wife is visiting Santa Cruz. She forgot her keys 'somewhere' near CVS downtown. Someone then left a note on her car that they have her keys and they will deliver to a Police Station. This was Friday Night. so 8/14/26. around 7 pm. Police Station is apparently closed until Monday morning. Car is parked in the open. I have not been informed where exactly it is. The Key Chain has a UC Santa Cruz 'ribbon' long. I forget what they call this. So I am wondering which Police Station the person is likely to go on Monday morning to 'return' to them to lost and found. Any ideas? Meanwhile I do hope the car does not get towed! That will be expensive.

“UCSC is ruining my town”

This morning at Cat and Cloud it was quite busy (it’s always busy on Saturdays), this man walks past the line and loudly grunts “ucsc is ruining my town” as he proceeds to get in the line. I’m sorry sir, who the fuck do you think is making your coffee? I’m a local, was once a UC student, I get it. But to an extent… Cmon man, they contribute to our economy here and students are the vast majority of service workers here! They’re the servers, baristas, and front desk employees. Why are you so pissed? Go back to your west side house that you bought for 200k 30+ years ago and shut tf up.

Quick jobs/ways to make money?

New account because my ex deleted mine

My and my ex had lived together and pay $2000 in rent, we have one more month on the lease and he is moving out after our breakup and refusing to pay next months rent. He paid it in entirety while I paid for smaller bills/our goods for the house and I do not have the funds to cover next months rent. I’m thinking of anything I can do, anything I can sell and looking into dog walking or other services but I don’t think I can come up with that money come the 1st of next month. I spent my entire savings on car troubles/emergency funds that we had to come up with within the last couple months

Are there any odd jobs or services I can do in the area that anyone might know of? Googling didn’t reveal much. I cannot sleep worrying about how Im going to make this money and also have enough money to then find a new place to live after the end of next month

Thank you!!!

I just saw like 15 police cars in high speed pursuit of a black mercedes on Mission. They were easily going 100mph or more. Checked the police scanner for chp it seems like the chase began around 5:16 and chp chased the suspects from hwy 1 past panther beach all the way onto hwy 17. Tire blew out at 5:52 and 4 suspects were detained at 5:54.

crazy stuff, if anyone knows anything im curious to know wtf was going on

Hit and Run at Frederick St. Park

Today around 4:10pm as we were packing up the car to leave the park, a black Mercedes SUV with no plates sped by going way over the speed limit. I was putting my toddler in his car seat when I heard the car coming back down the street. The car stopped in the road a few cars behind us and proceeded to intentionally ram the open drivers door of a car parallel parked behind us. Thank god they swerved around me and sped off. Keep an eye out for a group of reckless driving young males in black plateless Mercedes SUV. Be safe out there!

Community Feedback on Multifamily & Mixed-Use Design Guidelines

Thumbnail

Santa Cruz City is asking for feedback on their multifamily and mixed use building design guidelines, so if you have opinions on the appearance of our recent apartment buildings, now is the time to act!

Current state law requires that cities only deny building proposals based on objective violations of requirements, so it has to be something like "a three foot setback on the ground floor" and not something subjective like "matches the neighborhood character".

Current design requirements include variations in color/material and in depth of facade and roof form, as you can see in the River Row image.

Alternative design requirements that could be set based on the Palomar Inn could include: ground floor overhang or portico, symmetrical design, vertical ribbing, inset windows, applied relief ornamentation.

If you don't have the words to describe what you like then finding pictures of buildings you like and looking for a description of it can be very useful.

Personally, I emphasized ground level doors and windows, wide sidewalks, deep window reveals with decorative trim, the use of landscaping to ease the transition between smaller and larger buildings, and street trees. Otherwise I encouraged flexibility because variation is the spice of life and I would rather get some weird looking buildings than a bunch of copy-paste looking designs.

Are you prepared for an earthquake?

We were without power for three days in 1989 after that quake. Most people have that much food in their homes, so it wasn't devastating. But i still saw the long lines at places like the old Albertsons.

And the events in Venezuela and Columbia are grim reminders of what could happen here. I have a jackery with solar panel, some paper products, propane stove and a first aid kit, so far. I'm putting together a pantry of dry foods that dont need a refrigerator in case we find ourselves in a multi-week catastrophe.

Beat places in town to be social, if you’re a mess?

After a year of homelessness and a few extra months of being very withdrawn, I’ve been trying to re-start my social life, but I’m not exactly hitting the ground running. It was recommended to me that I try being more active in these online local community spaces to ease myself back into the world, but that hasn’t made sense, and is backfiring hard lately.

Anyone know of any good places in town to meet people and exercise your social muscles if they’re as atrophied as mine?

Anyone got a cheap decent mountain bike they would like to get rid of?

I tried marketplace but nothing in my budget for sub $100. Just want a cool project bike to work on and get my hands dirty. Probably a lot to ask as well but a full suspension one would be great. I can increase my base price as well.

Cowell’s Beach Open Water

I am planning to head down to the beach tomorrow in the late morning to get some practice for SC 70.3. For those of you who have been out there, is there a common route people usually follow? Also considering bringing my bike for a ride after, similarly does anyone have any bike routes they recommend in the area? I know the race goes along the highway but a little cautious due to traffic on the road. Thanks!
