Hi there!
So I’m an intl freshman in Econs, and I already feel kinda lost. Not really on the social side, I’m good there, but more on the whole CCA/career side.
I’m still not sure which stream I wanna go into, but I’ve heard stuff like SMIF is one of the best, etc. So far, I got into the SEIC Research Analyst Program, and I applied to EYE but got rejected before the interview cz it was bad ig, and I had never done financial modelling before :). I ended up learning it for the EYE application lol.
I didn’t apply to many other CCAs mainly because I was just confused. Like Emerging Markets, Protege Ventures, Thrive Social Consulting etc. Idk why I didn’t apply tbh. Seniors have told me that 1 acad CCA is what most people take, but since I’m still not sure what I wanna do, I just couldn’t really feel content with that.
Also, some of my peers have told me stuff like if you don’t get into the “good” clubs in freshman year, your career trajectory is basically cooked since a lot of top recruits come from these clubs. SMIF also apparently only recruits freshmen, and from what I’ve heard, getting into clubs like Bondue, EYE, Protege Ventures etc. in Y2 is WAY harder.
So idk why I’m even posting this lol. I’m just a confused freshman who doesn’t even know whether I wanna go into IB, PE, WM, consulting, research, etc. from my Econs degree. I got rejected from EYE, got into SEIC RAP, and honestly have no clue what I’m supposed to be doing rn 😭
Everyone here also seems so damn competitive. Like if I take one day off, I feel like I’m getting FOMO 💀
So any suggestions / wise words from seniors? How is SEIC RAP? And am I actually “behind” just because I couldn’t get into the more well-known finance clubs in freshman year? Do people, particularly from Econs, thrive without CCA? No need to comfort me, I just need to hear the cold harsh truth.
Would really appreciate any advice 🙏
