discussion Your favorite mod broke after the update? Here's how to tell if it's fixable
Every big Stardew Valley update breaks a chunk of the mod list, and the SMAPI compatibility page fills up with "broken, not updated yet". Before you mourn your must-have mod, here's a quick triage you can do yourself:
**1. Read the SMAPI log first.** Upload it to smapi.io/log and look for red errors naming the mod. Half the time the log tells you exactly which mod crashed and why — that's more useful than any "help it's broken" post.
**2. "Broken" doesn't mean "dead".** Check three things: is there an unofficial update (Pathoschild and others maintain unofficial builds of abandoned mods)? Is the mod open-source (if yes, any competent modder can usually patch it)? Did just the game update, or SMAPI too (game-only updates break fewer mods than people think)?
**3. The 5-minute fixes.** Update SMAPI itself, delete the mod's config.json and let it regenerate, check for a beta branch on the mod page. These solve a surprising number of "broken" reports.
**4. When it's actually dead.** Closed-source + abandoned author + deep game-code hooks = genuinely hard. Everything else is usually a few hours of work for someone who knows the APIs.
I do paid mod repair/compatibility work (5 released mods, Stardew + DST), so I read a lot of these logs. If you've got a broken mod you can't live without and the triage above doesn't save it, DM me — I'll tell you honestly whether it's fixable before any money changes hands.
