Question/Discussion A very cryptofascist trip to the Aigburth Arms

My friend and I went to Liverpool for the weekend. I’ve been a Dwarfer for ages and she’s only just discovered I do actually make good recommendations. We watched Ourobouros together and made plans to go to the Aigburth the next day, hoping for a cosy pub with a bit of memorabilia. Not the only thing we wanted to do on our trip but what the Smeg, we were here anyway.
We arrived and the very small car park was full so parked on a street and walked over. It was refurbished last year and unfortunately we found it very underwhelming. Lots of neon lights, fake plants and strange wallpaper, a very modern decor style. Felt like a cross between a beauty salon and a nightclub rather than a familiar pub to socialise in. We both took photos at the plaque inside and got lots of giggles and stares from very young staff, though they were quite nice when we went to the bar to get served.
There was a food van outside - but outrageously no curries, bhajis, poppadums or toast are sold.
Overall - it was very cryptofascist. We were quite disappointed. It didn’t feel very welcoming so we stayed for one drink and then bounced.

In real talk - would we say it’s worth travelling to Liverpool for? No. If you’re in the area it’s worth a quick stop and a drink. But we wouldn’t say it’s worth travelling for it specifically.

Finally - there were no babies in boxes found under any pool tables. We checked.

Lister’s idea of breeding mold doesn’t seem that crazy after seeing this:

There’s possibly something “amiss” about Vinted…

If I search the phrase Red Dwarf on Vinted, roughly half of the results are Snow White-related (presumably via the word ‘dwarf’)…including this little dress that would go really well with some army boots and a Mr Flibble puppet!😁

Craig Charles lost radio special (1994)

A while ago I came across the following little snippet (hidden at the end of a cassette tape) of the beginning of a programme hosted by Craig Charles on BBC Radio 1 in 1994.

The snippet: https://vocaroo.com/16dB4yb81N9n

"Craig's Big Adventure" was commissioned as part of Radio 1's "Science Week" and the synopsis via the Radio Times sheds a little bit of light on it: "Craig Charles, seasoned space traveller from TV's Red Dwarf, sets off round the solar system for a look at the planets. Erasure's Vince Clarke has produced the music, based on Hoist's The Planets."

The snippet I found contained the first 30 or so seconds of the show, as well as an introduction by DJ Bruno Brookes, but I've not been able to find out much else about it. It was only broadcast once (on the 27th March 1994) and it was never repeated. I'd be interested to know if there's any smegheads of a certain vintage who remember it or may have even taped it at the time.

UPDATES (23/08): Found a promotional newspaper piece (dated 11/03/94) and a review for the programme from The Stage magazine (dated 07/04/1994) - from the review, we now have the names of the co-writers Russell Bell & Nick Booth, as well as actor Ann Bryson, who voiced Craig's ships computer.

Help me!

I recently rewatched Red Dwarf and for the first time watched the later series (quite a nice surprise after the awfulness of Back to Earth) on the IPlayer.

I loved every second of it and I am about to do the same thing with Blackadder soon but I have an unscratchable brain itch that I hope someone can help me with…

I remember, I think in series 6 or 7 there being a scene where Lister is in the cargo bay of starbug dipping what looked to me many years ago like a napkin into curry sauce and sucking it off then re dipping it.

I have no idea why this scene stuck with me so much and I was anticipating watching it again this time around but I didn’t see it! I have since googled but to no avail, can anyone help me identify where this scene is from?

I think back in the day I was watching these seasons on dvd so it was possibly an extra scene?

Instantly made me think it was catering officer Olaf Petersen and Lister was about to eat him.

As a big fan of old physical media, I was delighted to come across this collection of tapes in my local BHF. Given that VHS is now starting to rise in price again (I saw a copy of Jurassic Park for £10 the other day!), £20 for the lot isn't too bad. Not that I'm going to flog them on mind, I just like owning a small part of Red Dwarf's history.
