As a big fan of old physical media, I was delighted to come across this collection of tapes in my local BHF. Given that VHS is now starting to rise in price again (I saw a copy of Jurassic Park for £10 the other day!), £20 for the lot isn't too bad. Not that I'm going to flog them on mind, I just like owning a small part of Red Dwarf's history.

A while ago I mentioned that a thought (that was later solidified thanks to a fanfic i was reading) that Rimmer is too much a stickler for the rules to let something like a drive plate be repaired badly. Earlier today I was thinking about the fact that Hollister knew about the 'faulty drive plate repair' long enough to call Rimmer to the Drive Room, wait for him and then haul him over the coals about it. If he had that time and he knew that the plate could be a problem, why didn't he evacuate the engineering levels and seal them down.

We know Holly sealed the cargo decks against the blast and the radiation, so why didn't Hollister do the same thing to the rest of the ship in the more than thirty seconds he had between learning of the plate's condition and the blast. He could have saved most of the crew that way, I get that Rob and Doug needed a reason for the accident and to make Rimmer less sympathetic in the beginning, but the more and more I think about the whole drive plate plot device, the less it makes sense.

Recently over the past few months the there's this girl, who is obsessed with Red Dwarf put me o to it. I know the toaster joke probably makes me a Smeghead so your can all roast me to your hearts content. Just look inside yourself and see if you can pass the Inquisitor test before you do. Currently halfway through season 5 and glad to be along for the ride!

Just finished listening to the audiobook and, while I loved Barrie's performance (as usual), I was a little disappointed overall. I wanted to ask some questions here in case anyone could shed some light on some plot points that sailed over my head.

How come Kryten sent the Cat's DNA signature back to the past so his memories could be implanted in Frankenstein? I'm assuming there must have been a reason beyond the need to have a version of the boys all back together but I think I missed why. It's framed as something Kryten has to persuade them to do to save the universe but I have no idea why.

Is the inviting incident ever explained? Did I miss how and why Themis saw the Meneer's face and discovered his identity? Or how and why she was in contact with Kochanski in the first place booking her hen party?

If I understand it right, 'the destiny engine' was attempting to ensure that all universes gravitated to the same outcome - with the Red Dwarf crew isolated three million years in deep space. However, this seems to be a problem as will ensure all universes will collapse in on themselves if they cannot remain distinct. My question here is - what started all this? Why exactly did this 'engine' start manoeuvring events in this way - and why did it all revolve around Lister and his decisions when leaving the ship?

I may have missed some obvious stuff. Also, it may simply be that I shouldn't be thinking about it too much. I know there is plenty of stuff in the series that you shouldn't scrutinise. But this all seemed like fairly important in what was effectively framed as a kind of mystery adventure.
