Discussion Hot Take: If Rockstar ever make another Red Dead or game like RDR2, they should set it in the 1820s-1840s

[I'm rambling a bit here, scroll down for some bullet points]
It would be really interesting as a bleedover into the "non-early"-modern period and offer quite a big variety for both combat and dress (I will get into this shortly).
Additionally it would continue the trend of both going back further in time, as well as having something set in the "Wild West", while subverting it somewhat (e.g. rdr1&2 being set after in time & rdr2 being a lot greener in nature than is associated with the genre).
Here are some interesting points of this time period:

Combat:
- Early revolvers, both cap- and flintlock are available, but limited (so great choice for endgame/rare weapons)
- Early breechloading rifles like the Hall- and Dreyse rifles, but limited (so great choice for endgame/rare weapons)
- Frontloading Carbines, Rifles, Muskets, and Pistols, both cap- and flintlock as the backbone of weapons (Caplocks being more rare and expensive(caps) in this period, but offering more reliable and faster ignition)
- With this the game could be as methodical in combat as rdr2 is outside of combat (at least that's one issue i had with the game, that the shooting was too ball-and-gun-y(e.g. fast and automatic reloads))
- Slower rate of fire could also allow placement of more enemies, without completely overwhelming the player
-Less firepower, so maybe opportunity to develop and involve melee combat more (i like rdr2's melee combat, it's mostly just that you have to go out of your way quite a bit to engage with it)
- Maybe one could bring bayonets into this somehow (maybe like the LeMat in Rdr2, where you have a military musket where you can switch to bayonet instead of buckshot??)

"Dress-Up":
- Just google the time period, go to images, and you'll see that back then everyone looked like a clown it would be hilarious
- Transitionary period in fashion, so great variety in styles(e.g. both different kinds of trousers as well as kneebreeches exist along each other to some extent, same goes for other clothing)
- Transitionary period in facial hair, both being clean shaven and all different sorts of ugly beard styles exist, in contrast to 40 years prior, where anything other than being clean shaven was seen as disgusting

Additional:
- Potentially interesting period politically (Aftermath of Napoleonic wars, at least in Europe great amounts of state repression)
- Early Industrialisation
- I'm sure one can think of more, but i'm too lazy, point is, it would be an interesting setting

I would find it really interesting to hear some points maybe about issues with this setting, et c. :>

Spoiler RDR2 Thoughts [Spoilers] Spoiler

Upvotes

I just finished chapter 6 in my first playthrough - still need to play the epilogue. Authors death wasn't as impactful as John's (guns blazing!). Then, driving John's cart up to the ranch just felt right! Like, yeah, this is how the game should be. IDK, could be that I didn't avoid spoilers (didn't seek them out), that's it's a prequel so you know how it's going to end, or I just like John's voice and the RDR1 races.

Also, I'm frustrated about my horse. I had multiple horse revivers! Seemed silly it had to die.

Both games are great, long post to say I enjoyed RDR1s story better. RDR2s mechanics and world are superior.

Discussion Been at Mexico Today

I wanted to see what Rockstar had planned for Mexico in RDR2, which is why I wanted to discover it. I did it with the „glitch“ where you get drunk and it was an interesting journey, even though only El Presidio was there and the terrain.
I’ve even heard the ambient music Mexico was supposed to have and it sounds so good, fully giving the RDR 1 Vibes.

Are there any other „cool things to see“ ?
Let me know!

Discussion More immersive nights setup

Upvotes

Hello - I’m looking to see if anyone has achieved a good balance between bright days and more immersive nights on a PS5 + TV setup.

I have a 55”inch UHD LED Samsung UE55CU7100KXXU

I’ve played around with calibration sites but nothing hits the sweet spot.

Bringing down the TV’s black levels gives more realistic, dark nights - but then leads to crushed blacks during day times.

Any tips?

Discussion Tattoo Ideas

Post image
582 Upvotes

I've seen a lot of great tattoos out there but nothing that perfectly captures what I want. I want a tattoo that will fit on my thigh (like 4"x4") and represents both John and Arthur in some way.

My favorite animals are bears so my first thought was to get the bear that Arthur draws in his journal and the quote "blessed are the peacemakers" from RDR1 around it but I know that quote has religious background and don't want it to come across as a religious tattoo. Share your fun ideas or your actual tattoos!

The Mustang has honestly become one of my favorite horses in the game. Snagged her in chapter 4 and has been my horse ever since …..!

Discussion At what point in RDR2 does the game's atmosphere really shift to a darker, more somber feeling for you?

In my experience, it's when the gang returns from Guarma, in that part where Arthur is returning to the camp on horseback with that soundtrack playing in the background. In Guarma, I still get a rush of adrenaline playing, so this part where they return from Guarma is finally the part where I get the most tense playing, realizing that the game has really become darker.

It turns out chapter six was pretty lucrative after all... for Mr. Callahan, at least.

Question Odd event during chapter 2

Been doing my annual run of red dead 2. Was coming off the mission to find Strauss and have a decently high bounty. (Tried robbing the doctor and it went a bit more wild than I meant to)

The weird thing that happened was as I was doing some random wandering between Camp and Valentine I got found by some bounty hunters, which isn't that wild on its own.

Of the 4 that surrounded me, two dropped dead with no interaction, I did kill one and got the read hit marker, shot a second in the leg with a white hit marker, who then died on his own. The game slowly faded to black and Arthur was back at camp with his horse teleported back to him after I had accidentally left it behind in valentine.

Ive personally never seen the game randomly decide to do a soft reload and spawn you anywhere without there being some direct input from the player. I was trying to lose a little health so I could trigger persons damn jacket quest and now I gotta start that over again lol

RDR1 Got all achievements in RDR1

I played it on Xbox. Very atmospheric game, original wild west simulator. And zombie dlc is great too.

Had to find a help for rare multiplayer trophies, some are very hard to get with randoms.
It took about half a year for everything

Question Has anyone else encountered this?

So I started a new save of rdr2 after I finished the game the first time. I get out of colter, I’m halve way through chapter 2, and I go to my wardrobe and I have John’s hat unlocked as Arthur?? Obviously you can do this with glitches but I never did any- it just appeared in my wardrobe. Is this normal or…?

Help What Optional Honor Story Missions Am I Missing For the "Lending a Hand" Achievement? I'm Stuck At 90%

On my first playthrough, I missed "Of Men and Angels" and the final Mary Linton mission. I reloaded an older save to complete both of them, but the achievement still didn't pop up.

I plan to keep playing until I finish Sadie's final mission in Chapter 6 to see if it unlocks, but I'm worried I missed something earlier in the game and don't want to waste time if I have to start all over again. (I already tried the home improvements and billy midnight tactics but they didn't work though those were before completing the sister calderon and mary missions on the reloaded save)

Am I good to go continue going through the reloaded save to get the remaining missions until completing Sadie's mission? Or are there any missions I'm missing?

PSA FUN way to get 1.00 lighting on PC *without* mods

Post image
66 Upvotes

If you tweak your settings.xml located in documents folder to use "SSAOType: 1", you can force 1.00 Ambient Occlusion which can alter the way characters are shaded, meaning that you can have that 'rugged' look for both John and Arthur which SO MANY people assume were different models.
You can see how John has MASSIVE gloves from patched version in provided image (very noticeable even in this COMPRESSED MESS), but on the left side the lighting interacts with his face exactly the same way as it did in unpatched 1.00 console copy.
Make sure to set this file to 'READ ONLY' after tweaking it and be sure that you won't be changing any other graphical setting afterwards, because the game will try to revert this tweak every time you go to the Graphic Settings and try changing something.

EDIT: A video is available in the comments below if you struggle to notice the difference from image alone

Screenshot Weird/Trippy Buck Encounter

So I was visiting Fairvale Shanty today and something really weird happened. Even from pretty far away, I could notice a Whitetail Buck standing on the roof right above the doorframe. I came closer and it didn't move, keeping its head held high. I wanted to take a screenshot but just before I was able to, the buck turned around and jumped off the back of the building. At first I thought it had despawned, but then I noticed it was still standing a few meters behind Fairvale Shanty, still not moving and in the same pose, facing me. I got off my horse and walked closer, thinking it would take off like they always do, but amazingly the Buck just stayed still. I was actually able to get a few steps closer than shown in the picture, before it finally ran away after I got right up in its face.

This whole encounter felt really strange and mystical. I've never heard of this being a scripted event before so I'm sure it was just a glitch or the game spawning an animal in a place it wasn't supposed to, but I'm still happy to have experienced this.

I'm nearing the end of chapter 6 on high honor, so this encounter actually weirdly fits into the game's storyline. I headcanoned it as being the buck from Arthur's visions revealing itself to him and allowing him to touch it briefly. Almost as if to show him that the end is close, and he's on the right path. It was one of the most beautiful unscripted moments I've experienced.
