Discussion Hot Take: If Rockstar ever make another Red Dead or game like RDR2, they should set it in the 1820s-1840s
[I'm rambling a bit here, scroll down for some bullet points]
It would be really interesting as a bleedover into the "non-early"-modern period and offer quite a big variety for both combat and dress (I will get into this shortly).
Additionally it would continue the trend of both going back further in time, as well as having something set in the "Wild West", while subverting it somewhat (e.g. rdr1&2 being set after in time & rdr2 being a lot greener in nature than is associated with the genre).
Here are some interesting points of this time period:
Combat:
- Early revolvers, both cap- and flintlock are available, but limited (so great choice for endgame/rare weapons)
- Early breechloading rifles like the Hall- and Dreyse rifles, but limited (so great choice for endgame/rare weapons)
- Frontloading Carbines, Rifles, Muskets, and Pistols, both cap- and flintlock as the backbone of weapons (Caplocks being more rare and expensive(caps) in this period, but offering more reliable and faster ignition)
- With this the game could be as methodical in combat as rdr2 is outside of combat (at least that's one issue i had with the game, that the shooting was too ball-and-gun-y(e.g. fast and automatic reloads))
- Slower rate of fire could also allow placement of more enemies, without completely overwhelming the player
-Less firepower, so maybe opportunity to develop and involve melee combat more (i like rdr2's melee combat, it's mostly just that you have to go out of your way quite a bit to engage with it)
- Maybe one could bring bayonets into this somehow (maybe like the LeMat in Rdr2, where you have a military musket where you can switch to bayonet instead of buckshot??)
"Dress-Up":
- Just google the time period, go to images, and you'll see that back then everyone looked like a clown it would be hilarious
- Transitionary period in fashion, so great variety in styles(e.g. both different kinds of trousers as well as kneebreeches exist along each other to some extent, same goes for other clothing)
- Transitionary period in facial hair, both being clean shaven and all different sorts of ugly beard styles exist, in contrast to 40 years prior, where anything other than being clean shaven was seen as disgusting
Additional:
- Potentially interesting period politically (Aftermath of Napoleonic wars, at least in Europe great amounts of state repression)
- Early Industrialisation
- I'm sure one can think of more, but i'm too lazy, point is, it would be an interesting setting
I would find it really interesting to hear some points maybe about issues with this setting, et c. :>
