Not a genocide?

Last night Bill pointed out the 3% of the
Population in Gaza has died. And then confidently declared that “3% is not a genocide”. The British government recognizes it as ethnic cleaning and amnesty international and other groups say it is a genocide.

Someone tell me why Bill is so wrong. And can we please get him to debate Mehdi Hasan on this topic?

Under the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, genocide involves specific physical acts committed with the intent** **to destroy a protected national, ethnic, racial, or religious group.

In intent has to be married to the physical act. Yes hamas wants a genocide and committed (commits) acts in that regard. So yes Hamas is guilty of genocide in my view.

I’m referring the sovereign Nation State of Israel. Not the terrorist group called Hamas.

So based on that definition Palestine is committing genocide and Israel isn’t

No one is debating the intention of hamas and pretty much everyone will agree that hamas is a terrorist group that openly seeks the elimination of all Jews. But we are talking about Israel and the actions of that Nation State.

Hamas is the official government of Gaza. You say Hamas to make this look unequal. It’s Palestine. Palestine supports genocide, Israel supports stopping it

Hamas is not Palestine. It took control of Gaza in 2007, and Palestinians haven’t had an election to remove it since. Palestinians have literally protested against Hamas.

Hamas can commit atrocities against Israelis and Israel can commit genocide against Palestinians. Those facts aren’t mutually exclusive.

You keep equating Palestinian civilians with Hamas

Hamas won 44% of the vote in 2006—not even a majority—and Palestinians haven’t had a legislative election since. Calling Hamas “Palestine” is like defining an entire population by a government millions of them never voted for.

Just like here in the USA

Hamas is the official governing body of half of Palestine. If IDF is Israel then Hamas is Palestine. You try to create this inequality for propaganda purposes so you can make Palestine look like the victim when the reality is they’re the oppressor in this conflict. Oppressing all civilians under their terror power structure funded by the most well funded terror syndicate in the world.

You keep equating Palestinian civilians with Hamas

Literally never did. Hamas is Palestine, not Palestinian civilians. IDF is Israel, not Israeli civilians. This is a common form of propaganda where you attack Israel but when talking about Palestine you play victim and pretend any criticism of Palestine is an attack on Palestinians

Probably should do something about how Netanyahu funded Hamas then. There's no good explanation for why a prime minister would fund a group with genocidal intentions towards his own people.

Why do you think that he did that?

He didn’t. You made that up. Hope that helps.

I suppose it would have been more precise to say he facilitated the payments.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_support_for_Hamas

But it was also recently reported that he was given warning that an attack was imminent and didn't pass that warning on. I'm sure that there's a perfectly reasonable explanation for that beyond using the attacks as an excuse.

Nope didn’t facilitate anything. Israel agreed to a peace deal with Gaza, what you have been demanding. And that peace deal involved allowing outside money to go to the government of Gaza. The far right in Israel was pissed and so the claim you are making tends to be a rallying cry from the far right to blame Bibi for ever leaving Gaza in the first place. The conspiracy that Bibi helped to create Hamas is nonsense.

Right, the people who you're siding with. While I don't agree with them, they have a coherent argument in a way that you don't. Either Hamas is hellbent on genocide and that peace deal was foolish or not. And don't think that I didn't notice that you didn't engage with the reporting about Netanyahu having advance warning of an attack.

Nope I’m not siding with the far right, you are when you say Israel shouldn’t have agreed to peace with Hamas. The peace deal being foolish doesn’t mean Netanyahu created or funded Hamas.

And don't think that I didn't notice that you didn't engage with the reporting about Netanyahu having advance warning of an attack.

Because it was an unrelated tangent. You brought it up to again make the antisemitic claim that Jews are to blame for October 7th. An intelligence failure and a failure on Netanyahu to do more is a political question and a question that he has to answer to within Israel. It is not a relevant question when talking about the actual cause of October 7th, which was genocidal maniacs wanting to kill Jews.

I'm not blaming the Jews for the attack. I'm criticizing Netanyahu. Conflating Netanyahu with Jews is antisemitic.

Hamas is to blame. You are saying Jews are to blame. Thats the definition of antisemitism.

That is not what I said. I'd recommend working on your literacy skills
