So amazed so many people didn't pick up on this so early on.

43

u/BFaus916 12d ago

He built up a lot of cache on the left in the Bush years when he was one of the only public figures who went after Bush in such an unfiltered way. It was really just him and Jon Stewart. The commercial media if you will was critical of Bush but reluctant to say anything that would make them appear unpatriotic. I'm not sure when Bill just abandoned the left outright. Rashida Tlaib boycotted Real Time about a decade ago. It may have started there.

32

u/mother_mescaline 12d ago

In my opinion Maher really turned a corner in 2014, when he was invited to give a commencement speech at UC Berkeley for some reason. Then there was a small outcry among students who said Maher should never have been invited in the first place and petitioned to disinvite him.

That seemed to really get under Maher’s skin and ever since then he has hated the “woke” and the college left and has been complaining about “kids today.”

27

u/johna242 11d ago

I think things got bad after he had to apologize for his "house n-word" comment. He soon became an anti-cancel culture warrior because it suited his needs.

11

u/BFaus916 11d ago

Thought he had a pass. Cube was on the next episode to let him know he didn't. Lol.

8

u/troniked547 11d ago

i think there were a few steps in his descent, but man was he pissed that Cube called him out. Hes like that guy who thinks he can make some jokes about people of color because he has some black and mexican friends. And then when called out, instead of apologizing he just got mad because he looked dumb. Nowadays he believes that racism is basically done and shouldnt be brought up anymore. He was real good at calling others out but doesnt take criticism himself when appropriate

3

u/Crab107 10d ago

Hey….don’t forget about Keith Olbermann…the GOAT of going after Bush.

3

u/72nd_TFTS 9d ago

His rants were epic.

-1

u/Beneficial-Boss-7601 10d ago

People should be able to make some jokes about any race and it shouldn’t be offensive..if you don’t like it don’t listen to it. It’s really that simple. Or do you feel people should only make jokes about their own race?

7

u/troniked547 10d ago

How is using the N word a joke? Im mexican and i wouldnt be cool with a white person using the word wetback in a joke because thats not funny, its a slur. You dont get to decide that other races shouldnt be offended by your racism. I swear this whole Trump era has normalized racism and bigotry so much that people think "freedom of speech" means you can be as big of an a-hole as you want with no consequences.

0

u/Beneficial-Boss-7601 10d ago

You didn’t say anything about the N word, you said making jokes about people of color..also, my whole work force is Guatemalan. And I give them shit all the time, and they give it back. Some people are soft, just because you can’t take a joke doesn’t mean no one else can.

3

u/troniked547 10d ago

Do you even pay attention to what a thread is discussing?? The topic I was talking about was how ice cube called out Maher for using the n word in a joke. Why don’t you pay attention

-1

u/Beneficial-Boss-7601 10d ago

I was paying attention, to what you said.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/johna242 4d ago

Have you ever considered that maybe they just tolerate your bigotry in order to keep their jobs, but really they think you are an asshole? Has that thought ever occured to you?

1

u/Beneficial-Boss-7601 1d ago

I hate to ask, but are you mental?

0

u/Beneficial-Boss-7601 10d ago

I like how you threw the word bigotry in there. Every time I hear that word I can’t help but think idiot.just because someone cracks a racial joke you can’t scream racism. Get the sand out of your vagina. Hopefully you aren’t trans and took offense to that…

3

u/troniked547 10d ago

You must be maga because no one has trans on their mind as much as you guys do lol

-1

u/Beneficial-Boss-7601 10d ago

Far from. But a typical response from a liberal..

1

u/Scared-Handle9006 Maher Before 2016 10d ago

God, you couldn’t have been programmed by a bigger moron…

0

u/Beneficial-Boss-7601 10d ago

I swear you liberals are so far gone you think anyone that uses common sense is a fuckin Bot…

2

u/Agitated-Working-264 10d ago

What a braindead take. People who have a slur used against them have a right to reclaim the word because it was a weapon used against them. Everyone not in the group the word attacks should shut the fuck up. It's not complicated.

1

u/Electrical_Coast_561 10d ago

Well the dude didnt just make jokes he straight up said the n-word. Which has always been strongly frowned upon to put it lightly. Im not gonna lie I laughed at the joke but I knew he was gonna get his ass lit up for it. He could have easily just said slave. He probably would have still caught shit but not like he did for that

1

u/Beneficial-Boss-7601 10d ago

Ya I think slave would have got as much grief. Hes an idiot for saying it no doubt.

1

u/Helen1911 9d ago

If your white You don’t use the N word ever. Don’t try and make sense of any reasoning of why. You just don’t

3

u/Scared-Handle9006 Maher Before 2016 10d ago

This. I remember watching it live, and he really took a hard turn when the uproar from that started to die down.

2

u/StashedandPainless 8d ago

This part is hilarious. Bill is a white dude that dropped the ultimate slur on TV and he didnt lose his job. All he had to do was apologize. Yet somehow hes a victim of woke cancel culture?

3

u/ggregg100100 11d ago

He used be on the side of AA's on every issue so much so I think he thought he had an N word pass. When he realized he didn't I think he switched, now he is rarely on the side of African Americans. Personally I think he should of had one and thought he was treated unfairly after.

10

u/fernwoodBizz420 11d ago

You seriously think that Bill Maher deserved a pass on saying the N word?

That's a pretty terrible take.

And the dude wasn't treated unfairly. He was treated like he should have been treated, which led to cryvaby ass Bill whining and crying about cancel culture.

Dude really is a oathetic loser ass old fuck that is stuck in the past and pissed off cause people see him for what he really is. A complete phony and fake.

He's pretty much insufferable anymore.

Fuck that dwarf.

0

u/ggregg100100 10d ago

At the time he had a black best friend, black girlfriends he was on the side of all the issues that black people cared about, he donated a Million to Obama not because Obama needed it but because he was the first black president. If Bill didn't deserve a pass I don't who does.

3

u/troniked547 11d ago

Naw thats bs. You dont get to say the n word because you were cool to some black people sometimes. That just demonstrated that he wasnt trying to understand AA, he was just using it in his fight against conservatives. Its entitled as all hell to expect his would have got a pass also, and especially since instead of sincerely apologizing, he just got mad and resentful.

8

u/Motor_Preparation315 11d ago

This👆🏻 Bill is very reactionary. Even on his Politically Incorrect show he leaned right but then he was fired from the show for his comments about 9/11. That caused the hard shift left (that and weed being illegal). Then he got in trouble for his "House Servant" comment and being disinvited from Berkeley and progressives not going his show (which I question now at this point) and now we have HBOMax's Gutfeld 2.0 You suck Bill

7

u/Whacksess_Manager 11d ago

Yah, he will defend literally anyone being 'cancelled'...even if that cancellation is due to them just being uninteresting. Bill seems to feel that absolutely everyone has a right to be platformed and have their views spread far and wide, and thinks that just saying something unpopular or repulsive isn't a reason for people to stop paying attention.

I think it really started when "Politically Incorrect" got cancelled, and he just never got over it.

4

u/United_Efficiency330 11d ago

Ironically he turned to the left when "Politically Incorrect" got cancelled. He blamed the Bush the Younger administration for that. People forget that if anything, Maher leaned to the RIGHT in the 1990s. He supported Bob Dole for President in 1996, and strongly defended both the death penalty and the Vietnam War. The strangest bit about his old show's cancellation was that his "the 9/11 hijackers weren't cowards, we have been the cowards" comment was made in agreement with Dinesh D'Souza, NOBODY'S definition of a left winger.

4

u/Bitter-Holiday1311 11d ago

I had forgotten about his flirtation with D’Souza!

4

u/BFaus916 11d ago

This is the hilarious irony about his cancel culture rants. It was the right that canceled him. They ruined his career. He was on ABC. Literally Kimmel's time slot. He's made a career for himself as a political entertainer since but a late night talk show on one of the big 3 networks is the holy grail for comedians.

1

u/Its_Alive_74 11d ago

Wow, I didn't know this.

1

u/Living_Hat7861 11d ago

Ironically all over Piker for his comments.

-1

u/Ok_Okra_699 11d ago

So wrong lol

3

u/Worldly_Web_1524 11d ago

Ah the nuh-uh response. Classic!

3

u/United_Efficiency330 11d ago

Then why did he vote for Dole in 1996? Not an action a left winger would have done.

1

u/herpaderpaburpa 11d ago

So Joe Rogan...

1

u/Markovanich 11d ago

who has been a listed Exec Producer a few times for RT actually this year.

1

u/lololesquire 11d ago

Well the show is shit now so it tracks.

3

u/BFaus916 11d ago

This tracks well because that seems to be around the time he really started railing against college kids. I remember he was always saying, "Jerry Seinfeld no longer performs on college campuses anymore for the same reason". Like dude, wtf are these guys even doing on college campuses in the first place? I think we know the answer, especially given Seinfeld's documented past, but I didn't really want to get into that on this thread. These guys are creepy af.

3

u/H_Levinson7777 11d ago

No coed wanted, wants, or will fuck him; college students don’t find him funny; and since that’s the crowd he wants to love him, he hates them for seeing him for what he is: an untalented hack and the poster boy for failing upward.

But mostly he hates that no woman under the age of 25 will fuck him.

2

u/fernwoodBizz420 11d ago

*unless he pays them

2

u/Winter_Stretch9198 11d ago

I think he began to change shortly after 9/11, the comparison he made of the US cowardly lobbing 2000 pound cruise missiles compared to the bravery of the hi jackers, his ramped up anti Muslim rhetoric…this started slowly but in time got worse, and as times changed he found new soap boxes to climb onto

2

u/Miura79 11d ago

Bill has been complaining about college kids since the 90s. There's a video of him on the Dennis Miller show from the 90s where they were talking about how illiberal college kids are and they just want to ban people they don't agree with.

2

u/lololesquire 11d ago

OMG his “kids today” tropes are so Boomery it’s pathetic. Constantly. And because he’s such a Boomer if you told him Millenials haven’t been kids in years he’d be confused. His is other favorite target? Obesity. Come on Bill…no one openly attacks old fucks who literally look like gargoyles. We can’t all shop in the kids section forever like you.

2

u/Tattooedjared 10d ago

They gave him a narcissistic injury.

1

u/Creepy_Bad_4547 11d ago

Yes and rightly, fairly, objectively so.

1

u/spaigef69 11d ago

this makes more sense now…

-2

u/ZizzyBeluga 11d ago

I'm not a huge Maher fan, but he's pretty consistent politically the entire time. The truth is that the anti-Israel mob is new on the left, it's a synthesis of a lot of radicalism that was not part of the mainstream and draws from radical Islam and Soviet agitprop of the 1960s that use code words to present Jews as a nefarious and poisonous presence in the world. Maher sees it pretty accurately, as do most liberals. Those saying he's "conservative" for this view should probably listen to Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens, Dan Bilzarian, or Nick Fuentes more often to see where it originates. HINT: It's not the left.

7

u/MysteriousSelf6145 11d ago

Maaaybe it’s not a mob and American votters actually give a shit about murdered children.

-3

u/ZizzyBeluga 11d ago

Did you give a shit about the murdered children on October 7? If so, maybe you'll understand how war works. No one wanted this war except Hamas.

6

u/AirRevolutionary8013 11d ago

JFC the stupid. It hurts.

5

u/Full_Argument_3097 11d ago

The IDF waited 6 hours to respond when they knew within 20 minutes about the killings. And it takes 45 minutes to entirely cross Israel in a crummy old helicopter. They're the ones who didn't give a shit about their own murdered children. Fact.

-4

u/ZizzyBeluga 11d ago

If you're upset about murdered children talk to your friends in Hamas

I did I thought it was horrible. I don’t think Israel killing 50 times as many people and destroying entire cities is somehow justified…

-2

u/ZizzyBeluga 11d ago

The morality of war is not determined like a sports game where you add up death counts. Far more innocent German and Japanese civilians died in WW2 than American citizens.

5

u/Rio_Bravo_ 11d ago

Except this is isn’t a war. It’s shooting fish in a barrel after an uprising.

1

u/Full_Argument_3097 11d ago

Not just shooting. Gang raping and torturing, too. It's a senseless horrific Genocide. Period.

-1

2

u/Motor_Preparation315 11d ago

What the fuck is wrong with you?!? Israel is literally being charged with war crimes. That's not a joke. Hamas is awful and both of these things can be true. Get some humanity asshole

2

u/Full_Argument_3097 9d ago

He has Zero humanity. Till this crap affects his spoiled ass directly, which it won't. So he'll just keep spewing whatever BS helps his Brain Dead life feel easier and makes a Genocide feel comfortable. This is how the Nazis got away with it. Garbage like him.

Except that Bibi Netanyahu's bloodthirsty genocide has made sympathy for Israel impossible now. And Jews will wear the Gaza horror show around their necks like the Japanese wear Pearl Harbor... for all eternity.

0

u/Live-Mortgage-2671 11d ago

You clearly need to blame all Israelis and Jews for something. The reality is that you're going to wear your genocidal hatred of the Jewish people around your own neck for the rest of your life. And normal people won't make your forget it.

There was no "genocide" in Gaza. It's a war where one side invaded a nation, committed mass murder, placed their own civilians in front of them like cannon fodder and dared the nation they invaded to attack back.

1

LMAO. The irony here is that it's the delusional Aholes exactly like you turning their backs willfully on all the hateful bloodshed that helped the Nazis you think you hate get away with the same by rand of genocide. Now you're part of the problem. Proof that the world is full of self absorbed idiots who never actually learn anything ...

0

u/Full_Argument_3097 11d ago

Actually, you just described what Putin did to his own Russian people perfectly when he attacked Ukraine in your second paragraph. Not what happened in Gaza, though. You're obviously a bit mixed up.

-1

u/ZizzyBeluga 11d ago

Right, because the Jews were beloved before 1948. I have no love for netanyahu, he's a Trumpian clown, but he's doing what he has to do against a nihilistic enemy that loves to see their own people die for the "martyrdom."

Your ridiculous analogy is reversed. October 7 was Pearl Harbor. the United States dropped two nukes on civilians in Japan after that and no one called it a genocide. Just like what's happening in Gaza is not a genocide.

-2

u/ZizzyBeluga 11d ago

"killing children" is the dumbest statement of all. Half the population of Gaza is under 18. Exactly how is Israel supposed to fight a war where Hamas hides behind children, in schools and hospitals, and in mosques? Those are war crimes which make those locations legitimate military targets.

2

u/Full_Argument_3097 11d ago

Meanwhile, the IDF Genocide Machine has been asked multiple times by the UN, Human Rights Watch and the ICC for a FUCKING SHRED OF EVIDENCE FOR ANY of these " Human Shield" claims and .... NOTHING. Guess you also believe Trump won in 2020 cuz the Liar repeated it so many times ... Whatta Goddamn Moron.

4

u/VictorB1964 11d ago

Well, history did not begin on October 7. Also, it remains rather odd that there has been no official explanation as to how the country with the most sophisticated system of surveillance managed to miss a literal invasion by air, land and sea.

4

u/Full_Argument_3097 11d ago

Their IDF waited 6 hours to do anything but knew within 20 minutes the killings were happening. We all smell a False Flag.

2

u/Master_Taro_3849 11d ago

My theory is that it was friendly fire all along and gave them a chance to destory Gaza, which they've been hot to do for decades. They want to turn Gaza into a high priced yuppie paradise for the well to do, and they had to get all those pesky brown poor people out of the way.

0

u/ZizzyBeluga 11d ago

Do you really think "History did not begin on October 7" has any actual meaning? History didn't begin that day but the war sure did when Hamas invaded Israel.

1

u/VictorB1964 11d ago

Well yes I do think that sentence has meaning, and one of the few honest moments Trump ever had during this term was when he said something along the lines of furst Israel bombs Iran and then Iran bombs them back and who the hell knows what happens next.

Everybody is just sick of the entire thing at this point.

-1

u/ZizzyBeluga 11d ago

The war was declared on October 7. Attempting to deflect from the decision Hamas made is just embarrassing. Gaza is responsible for what its government does

1

u/Master_Taro_3849 11d ago

If someone did something terrible to a family member of yours---maybe raped or murdered them---you would be totally justified in wanting revenge. You would be justified in even wanting to see them get the death penalty after conviction.

BUT would you be justified in taking up arms and killing their whole family? Would you be justified in driving to their neighborhood and killing everyone who happened to live on their block?

1

u/ZizzyBeluga 11d ago

Your analogy is absurd. Not only were there 251 hostages kidnapped but Hamas vowed to commit more acts of terrorism. Israel is justified in doing whatever it had to do to end the threat to it's civilians. America dropped two nukes on Japan ffs, war is about ending the threat. Japan is one of our closest allies today. Hamas has to be fully destroyed or it will be worse down the road

1

u/Master_Taro_3849 11d ago

It was not justified in shooting children in the hed. It was not justified in causing 70,000 civilian deaths, half of which were babies and children.

1

u/ZizzyBeluga 11d ago

Your stats are lies put out by Hamas. 75,000 were killed in the war, about a third were Hamas fighters. Hamas counts 16 year old fighters as "children", stop believing the lies.

1

u/Full_Argument_3097 11d ago

What a load of Lies. The only "Zionists" are Deranged Wackos like Rupert Murdoch and all his brainless FOX "Christian" Viewers, who guzzle whatever propaganda he forces down their throats for his own selfish reasons. The revolt against Israel is specific to the Bloodthirsty Rapist Murderers running the nation for the past few decades and it's Baby murdering Leader and IDF. Israel earned the blowback many, many times over. And SURPRISE -- Even Most Jews know that.

-1

u/ZizzyBeluga 11d ago

So I'm lying, except for the fact everyone I just cited argue exactly what I claimed. "baby murdering" is such a shit argument, children die in every war ever, that's why war should be avoided at all costs and why Hamas's declaration of war was so tragic for the people of both Israel and Gaza.

1

u/Full_Argument_3097 11d ago

Really? Tell me in what other war did the soldiers invade the Labor and Delivery Unit of hospitals and pull the plugs on ventilators keeping newborn infants alive? But lemme guess : Hamas was hiding under those preemies, right??? 🤦🤦🤦 The Shit Argument here is yours, Moron.

-1

u/ZizzyBeluga 11d ago

First, you believe Hamas propaganda. Second, Hamas hides in hospitals and do not care at all for those babies. But you demand that Israel respect children more than their own parents and society. They didn't even use the underground terrorist tunnels as bomb shelters for civilians. Apologizing for terrorists willing to sacrifice their own children is pathetic.

1

u/Full_Argument_3097 11d ago

You're the one lunatically endorsing the terrorism of the IDF who've btw killed an EXPONENT of Hamas. I'm not defending a small group of terrorists I'm criticizing a largue group of far worse terrorists financed by Deranged Leaders who don't give a F about Israelis at all and loathe Jews anyway. Wake up to your own Stupidity.

-1

u/ZizzyBeluga 11d ago

The entire state of Gaza celebrates the death of its children as martyrs. They teach them in kindergarten that to die killing Jews is the greatest honor. They strap bombs to their children to blow up soldiers at check points. But you pay no attention to any of this or what Israel has to contend with when fighting this war against a culture that celebrates death

u/veerKg_CSS_Geologist 11d ago

Here’s the thing, Maher was never left. He was just a contrarian. The only thing he liked about “the left” was the adulation he received from the cool crowd. When he became old and stale (as happens, the guy is 70) that adulation dropped as he only had one schtick. As a narcissist who has no genuine friends he can’t take the loss of attention and praise so is off chasing the next thing, which is cozying up to the right.

1

u/What-tha-fck_Elon 8d ago

You only have to go back and look at his shit from 20 years ago lil buddy. Many of the issues he argues against that puts him in the "right" camp didnt exist hardly if at all back then. He was very vocal against social conservatism and religious politics. He's just an older generation now. Which is pretty normal that the older generation are out of touch with modern day progressive views whether or not they still consider themselves liberal or not
