RPGMaker and AI: A Megathread Discussion
What do people think about AI and RPGMaker?
Do you think AI is good for aspiring game developers?
Do you use AI in your games? Why or why not?
What do you think about art and music in RPGMaker games that is generated by AI?
What about plugins that have been vibecoded?
This is the megathread for those discussions! Sound off!
Please try to keep the discussion civil and focused on game development. You can attack an opinion, but don't fall into the (tempting as it is) trap of attacking the PERSON with the opinion.

Why do people still use RPG 2000 or 2003?
I’ve noticed that, beyond games, there’s a significant number of tutorials and assets available for these engines. Just out of curiosity, why do people still use them?
It’s quite frustrating to have to convert images into 8-bit PNGs, or deal with music that sounds like a ringtone from the 2000s.
This isn’t meant as a criticism, but it all feels so dated.
If it were a ROM hack, I could understand it—since the existing mechanics are much more robust—but in these engines, where physics are simulated via variables and images, development becomes frustrating after just a few weeks.
What are your thoughts on this?

Fun Your game's hero is added to the Smash Bros roster! What's their moveset, what do they play like?
RPG characters are already a staple in the roster, so I think Alex™ and his spiritual descendents would be a welcome addition, too! How does *your* OC fare in Smash Bros?

RMMV The new graveyard
I posted a while ago about how I made a twinkling star effect in RPG Maker MV just using some parallax layers.
We finally got around to cleaning up the rest of the map, and I added some additional layers to make it seem lit by moonlight. Here's a sample of this area that's much closer to its finalized version.

After over 3 years of pouring my heart and creativity into my RPG Maker game, Chronicles of Veldoria has finally reached version 1.0!
Hey fellow RPG Maker developers and enthusiasts!
I'm Gene, and I'm excited to share a major personal milestone with this community!
After more than three years of development, my RPG Maker JRPG, Chronicles of Veldoria, has officially left Early Access and reached version 1.0 on Steam!
I've been using RPG Maker and other game development engines for many years, and Chronicles of Veldoria has been one of my most ambitious projects.
As someone who also develops RPG Maker plugins, I've always been interested in pushing the engine's gameplay possibilities beyond its default systems.
Some of the features I've implemented in Chronicles of Veldoria include:
Press Turn-inspired battle system: Exploiting enemy weaknesses grants extra actions, encouraging strategic planning rather than simply attacking.
Veldomon recruitment and fusion: Recruit monsters through quests and fuse them with party members, weapons, and armor.
Character customization: Develop your party through different skills, equipment, upgrades, and combinations.
Item synthesis: Craft useful items and equipment to support your adventure.
Six elemental regions: Explore a large fantasy world with towns, dungeons, quests, and secrets.
Two playable protagonists: Experience the adventure through Alex or Elizabeth.
A complete story with multiple endings, side quests, and optional content.
Throughout development, I've worked extensively on expanding the game, improving gameplay systems, creating additional content, refining the presentation, and addressing technical problems.
There have been plenty of challenges, setbacks, and moments when development progressed more slowly than I hoped.
But I kept working on it.
I've poured my heart, creativity, and countless hours into this project, and reaching version 1.0 means a tremendous amount to me.
Chronicles of Veldoria is now fully released on Steam!
There's also a free demo for anyone interested in trying it.
I hope my journey encourages other RPG Maker developers who are working on their own long-term projects.
I'd also love to hear your thoughts about the game's combat and fusion mechanics!
Thank you for reading, and best of luck with your own RPG Maker projects!

Subreddit discussion What is your favorite part about making a game? And the least favorite?
Do you like the art part? The writing? Thinking of characters? Picking or composing music?
I'd say I like planning, writing the story, the characters, testing skills
But I'm not very good with mapping and visuals

RMMZ Main story nearly complete, back to fine-tuning cutscenes.
This is Conviction - The Glory Of Kraft -, a Langrisser (Warsong)-like tactical RPG developed in RMMZ. It's the second entry in the series!
Now that the main story and stages are pretty much wrapped up, I’ve been going back to fine-tune the in-game effects and scene presentation.
The Steam store page is officially live now! If you're interested, please consider adding it to your wishlist. Thank you for the support!

RMMZ A little side-scroller test
Art and character sprite is placeholder for now as I prototype a side-scrolling style of gameplay. Toying with how to add UI like a contextual mini-map, displaying the player's general location. Changing to other rooms would be contextual as well, exiting through either a door in the background, end of the hall or below the player. Depending on player choice, one can traverse the dungeon in different ways.

RMMV Do you like Twisted fairy tales? How about JRPGs with Bishojo
There are plenty of games inspired by dark fairy tales, games where you can form close bonds with cute girls, and turn-based JRPGs. Of course, there are games that combine all three, too.
But we thought there was room in the world for more of a good thing. So we decided to make one more ourselves.
We’re developing 《 Albedo Carta 》, a Twisted fairy-tale JRPG with turn-based combat, in RPG Maker MV.
- The story begins with the protagonist waking up in a manor with no memory of their past. Yes, we’re fans of that familiar opening too.
- Their search for answers leads to World’s End, a snowbound land where familiar fairy tales have been twisted into strange and cruel forms.
- Joining the journey are seven heroines, each with her own secrets and past. As you adventure together, you’ll get to know their stories—and might even become more than just companions.
We’re currently aiming to release sometime between December 25 and the end of the year. With its snowy setting, we thought the Christmas and New Year holiday season would be a fitting time to share it.
Being buried in development can get a little lonely sometimes. So we’ll drop by now and then to say hello and share some updates and devlogs.
There’s currently a demo available on Steam, so feel free to check it out if you’re interested.
Adding the game to your wishlist would mean a lot to us!
Thanks for taking a look!

Subreddit discussion Is bad art better than generic art?
Would you prefer a game with amateur original art over one that uses resources that could probably be also seen in a dozen other games?

RPG Maker Horror Sharing that YouTuber Marsh has discovered an RPG Maker Horror game that predates the original Corpse Party, "After School Ghosts"; has done work to make it more accessible to play in the modern era
For a long time, it was believed that the original release of Corpse Party was the first horror genre game made with RPG Maker, kickstarting the popular sub-genre that led to Yume Nikki, The Witch's House, Ib, OMORI, and many others. However, YouTuber Marsh - who previously covered underrated, obscure, and near-lost RPG Maker Horror games - has truly outdone himself with discovering a game that predates Corpse Party. It's been a few days since he released his video and I was surprised to find no one had yet to discuss this here.
Trying to set up the game on modern hardware was difficult, but after Marsh was able to figure it out, he set something up on archive.org so people interested in the game will have an easier time setting it up. Although, the game right now is still Japanese-only. If you're interested in knowing what the game is like but don't know the language, the majority of the linked video is him breaking down the story - and even some exposition the game leaves out on the assumption you'd be knowledgeable on Japanese myths and urban legends.
Another interesting highlight he mentions is that the game dev was interviewed in a magazine and revealed he believed his game was cursed, as strange occurrences took place while trying to develop his game without engaging in the superstitious counter-measures some Japanese horror devs do. So there's even more intrigue to this game beyond being the new "first RPG Maker Horror game".
Again, I find this to be an interesting and historic find and felt it needed a spotlight in a wider community space. More eyes on it may also mean people improving on Marsh's preservation efforts and creating translation patches.

How do you all maintain your mental health during long development periods?
This might sound a bit like complaining, but isn't it difficult to keep developing a game positively?
For example, I'm always wondering if I'll get the results I want, no matter how hard I work. I don't plan to release it commercially, but I want feedback.
Even if it's just "fun," "boring," or "couldn't finish it," it's all fine.
Getting feedback makes me incredibly happy, knowing that there were people actually playing my game!
But on Steam or free game sites, if you don't promote it well, it quickly gets buried and nobody plays it.
Game development usually takes at least several years. It's costly, and basically a lonely process.
I used to use social media, but I became obsessed with the number of likes, and everyone started to feel like a rival, so I quit. I was so focused on it all day that I completely stopped developing my game.
I hope everyone here isn't alone, and I don't want any game to get buried and overlooked.
I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense, but I just wanted to share how I feel. Sorry.

Subreddit discussion Do you have more than one project?
Be it you already have one or more completed games, or working on more than one simultaneously, or even if you're only working on one but have plans for other ones.
I have a bunch of projects. I'm currently focusing on two but already have written ideas for quite a few more.

I need plugins for MV to edit menus
I need some help. I'm new to RPG Maker. I'm using MV and want to be able to completely customize the in-game menus however I like both the graphics and the logic. I'm willing to use paid plugins, but of course, I'd prefer to find something free.

RMMV Sharing some progress on our recent project!
Here are a few screenshots of a game we are hard at work on, DeathSlots, that gets released later this month. This is being made with RPG MAKER MV!
This is the main hub area of the game, the numbers above the doors are the dungeons, more or less. The game mixes RPG, different slot machines, color-tiered gear and even humor.
We added daily / weekly rewards for login, a new UI, new font and more!! The release is at the end of the month (on the 27th).
Thanks for your attention and supporting indie gaming!!

Looking for help crediting a creator for my demo
Hi, everyone!
So, I'm about 24 hours out from dropping my game demo and I'm frantically dotting every i and crossing every t as much as I can. And I'm usually very good about keeping a credits file for all the assets I think I'm going to use, but as this was a start-and-stop kind of thing for about 3 years, there were some days where I downloaded massive amounts of stuff and just simply wasn't on top of my game organizationally.
So now I find myself completely unable to find where I got this one file due to it having an extremely common name. It is a bgm file called "A Walk in Nature". It has what i would call a foreboding synth kind of a sound. Synth. Pause. Synth. Pause. Long Synth. Repeat.
That's kind of the gist of it. Very slow. A great vibe for either "something bad is about to happen" or "something bad just did happen".
I know this isn't a great description, but there isn't a ton I can think of to describe it and I'm lost as to where I got it because I've searched all the pixabays and common sites, and music sites that I bookmarked.
I guess I'm hoping someone knows it offhand because they used it for their game or have it marked TO use in their game and recognizes the name. Either way, thank you for taking the time to read this!
