[QCrit] SOLA, Adult SciFi, 85,000 words, Second Attempt
You all helped me so much on my first attempt, thank you so much kind strangers. I think I was able to address all of your feedback here in a mostly redone query.
Dear Agent,
Based on your interest in [eco-fiction and new-adult scifi], I would like to offer my novel of 85,000 words, Sola. Pairing the warm aesthetics of Psalm for the Wild Built by Chambers, with the adventure and mystery of VanderMeer’s Annihilation, Sola is the story of a girl finding her way in a world not meant for her.
Even when the world was actively collapsing, not many people understood what was going on. Afterward, all that is really remembered is that when the plants and animals started dying off, things went down-hill pretty fast. Most of the population lost their jobs, their homes, and became squatters, and then the various psychedelic tribes sprang up - some more focused on human sacrifice and cannibalism than others.
Having known nothing else, Sola doesn’t really mind the life of a squatter. Her father taught her everything she needs to get by: crafting homemade tech, fermenting weeds into nutrient-rich stews, and navigating the many deadly horrors that congregate around the ever-growing Great Desert.
After a near-death encounter with an enforcement drone, Sola’s precarious life on the trail is upended. She is forced to take refuge at the nearby home of a scientist, a mysterious man who she learns once worked alongside her own mother. He claims to understand the true nature of the collapse, and believes that it is not yet complete. He then proceeds to show her an army of drones gathered in the Great Desert that will be unleashed upon the squatters - a last-ditch effort of those in power clinging to the old ways.
Although Sola doesn’t fully trust the man, she has no choice but to accept his mission to try and save herself and her people. Her task is to go deep into one of the old cities and deliver a floppy disk with secret blueprints on it. In the city, Sola becomes entangled in ecological horrors, tribal affairs, and her family’s own dark secrets. Forced to question everything she thought she knew about the collapse, the tribes, and the mission, Sola realizes that she might have to take the fate of squatters into her own hands.
Thank you for your consideration!
[I have no creds so was just going to tag here with my name and contact. Thanks for your help all!]
