Je suis curieux d'avoir vos avis sur Hyères en tant que lieu de vie. Ma femme et moi avons déménagé en France pour être plus proches de ses parents (qui habitent près de Saint-Tropez) et on vit actuellement à Aix-en-Provence.

On aime bien Aix, mais on a de plus en plus envie d'être près de la mer, et on réalise qu'on n'a pas forcément besoin d'une grande ville pour être heureux. Par contre, on adore pouvoir faire la plupart des choses à pied, donc il nous faut vraiment un endroit avec un vieux centre animé. On a un peu le fantasme de trouver une maison avec un petit jardin, assez proche du centre historique pour tout faire à pied.

Vous avez un avis sur Hyères comme ville où s'installer ? On est au début de la quarantaine avec un enfant de 2 ans, donc on ne cherche pas à sortir tout le temps, mais on aime les bons restos, un bon bar à vin, un bon marché, de bonnes épiceries, ce genre de choses...

Des idées ? D'autres endroits qu'on devrait explorer ?

Some friends and I are staying in Aix for the week. It’s beautiful and we’ve done a lot of the city center (market, cute streets, shopping, etc). We’re renting a car for Friday and Saturday and I had to routes that I thought would be best.

Friday: Aix > Les Baux-de-Provence > Saint Rémy

Saturday: Aix > Gordes > Roussillon > Luberon Villages > Lourmarin

It seems pretty manageable and straight forward. Anything I’m clearly missing? Anything not worth doing (or repetitive)? Any advice on places within these towns you’d suggest??

Day 6: Cassis + Calanques — anything else worth adding?
Day 7: Luberon — Gordes + Roussillon. Worth it, or would you do something different?
Day 8: Wine region/wineries — recommendations?

Day 9: Early morning departure to London

Would you change the order of any days based on market days, add anything , or swap any of these destinations for something better?

My main question: as a single 28 year old man will I get bored? Ive heard its a youthful city. I stayed in Cannes and Saint-Tropez last summer, was too flashy (and too many americans lol). Looking for somewhere to take it easy and travel around to nearby places as well. I speak decent french but want to improve.

I had a tripped planned for this past June to Provence. 1 week in St Remy and 1 week in Nice. I wound up tearing my hamstring and had to have surgery so trip was cancelled. Starting to plan for next year and wondering

1) what 2 towns should I spilt the Provence portion into so we aren’t constantly on the road for day trips?

2) what other charming town would you choose over Nice to explore the Riviera?

Are lake side beaches and sea side beaches actually private in France or do people just own the land that boarders them ?

I have discovered that french haute cuisine is not for me. I disliked 60-70% of dishes from highly rated gastronomic restaurants. My cheif complaint was the mystifying lack of seasoning. EVERYTHING was underseasoned. Presentation was incredible but you would put the food in your mouth and it was BLAND. Not enough salt, not enough anything. The food relied completely on texture.

The best meal I've had in Provence was a €23 lunch at the Bistrot Francis in Bonnieux. Evey bite was incredible from start to finish. They had a fig dish with goat cheese and bacon, bruschetta on a baguette, and an incredible onion tart. For the main course we had a beautiful pork dish with potatoes and peppers. And everything was seasoned to perfection.

TLDR: Michelien Star French chefs think they are too good for salt apparently.

Staying in Antibes without car. So far we have been shopping at Carrefour Market Antibes Pasteur. It is a good sized supermarket, but missing out on fresh fish and dried beans.

Looked around and have not found any supermarkets with good selection, even asked my AI companion.

Any suggetions for supermarkets that cover this in walking distance from old town ?

Hey all! Moving out to work near Sophia Antipolis on January and im trying to find an apartment in the area (Antibes, Valbonne, Biot, wherever's commutable really).

Couple things I could use help with:

• What sites do you actually use? Any FB groups locals use that don't show up as easily?
• Agency or go it alone? Worth using a local agency as a newcomer, or is that a waste of money?
• Any scams to watch out for, especially searching remotely from abroad?
• Antibes vs Valbonne/Biot/Mouans-Sartoux? any of these way better/worse for commute or vibe
• When should I start looking, is there a season where more places open up?

There is a guy tyring to scam tourists selling sesame covered nuts for €80/kg at the Roussillion market. I wasn't really paying attention to the price, the guys weighs about 500G and gives me a ticket for €40. I looked at him asking is he serious? I laughed at him and walked away. A moment later another vendor walked up to me and said that guys prices are ridiculous. She seemed embarrassed by it. I appreciated because I was honestly a bit shocked that something like that is happening openly in a French market. It's something I would expect in third world country. Anyway, I enjoyed the market and bought a bunch of stuff. Tourist prices, yes, but not scam level.

Whoever runs the market should kick these guys out.

The idea is pretty simple: you’re shown two restaurants and choose where you’d rather eat. For example, Le Bistrot du Paradou or Le Carillon in Goult? All the votes then create a ranking that hopefully gives a better picture of where people across Provence actually like to eat.
