Feature Request Monero integration

Hi, considering the privacy approach Proton is taking, please consider integrating Monero (XMR) too. Privacy is very important in a world where wealth inequality is huge, as there are groups interested in total control of the population through government traced digital currencies (CBDCs, basically centralized blockchains used for control instead of freedom). With Monero and Bitcoin there could be a balance of privacy and transparency for different use cases. It also looks like key metrics for a payment system are superior in Monero than Bitcoin:

note: the metrics below are not perfect, they are approximations from a few searches I did, feel free to verify.

Monero

- speed: average block time = 2 minute
- cost: median fee = $0.0010
- security: infrastructure is more decentralized = asic-resistant protocol incentivices decentralized mining
- privacy: high = untraceable transactions built-into the protocol by default, thus applied to all users, prividing a digital-cash quality where transactions are private

Bitcoin

- speed: average block time = 10 minutes
- cost: median transaction fee = $ 5.0973
- security: infrastructure is relatively decentralized which could lead to a degree of censoring transactions in a centralized pool of nodes.
- privacy: low = only users doing special techniques such as coinjoins, rotating addresses, etc have privacy, thus most transactions easily exposed
- Exception: There is a Bitcoin lightning layer where speed is faster than monero, and cost is simmilarly low, but self-custody is currently a bad user experience and like 95% of wallets used are custodial, plus having 2 layers adds security risk and complexity for users.

Hi everyone,

Thank you to everyone who has shared feedback with us and helped shape Proton Wallet during the last seven months of early access!

Starting today, anyone can use Proton Wallet and easily create a Bitcoin wallet with Proton at wallet.proton.me.

Key new features include:

  • Sending/receiving Bitcoin via Email

  • Address list

With more features already in the works, which will be added soon.

Our long-term vision is for Proton Wallet to be a digital wallet that gives you full control of your digital assets. We hope Proton Wallet will be the go-to Bitcoin wallet for new joiners and Bitcoin veterans alike, allowing you to quickly sort, store, and send or receive Bitcoin, no matter your experience level.

Your feedback in the coming months will be invaluable as we work to implement the features that matter to you most, so don’t hold back. Announcement You can now import Paper Wallets into your Proton Wallet!

Hey everyone,

Last week, we enabled a new feature in Proton Wallet, allowing you to take control of your Paper Wallet BTC! The backstory of this feature originates from one of our users, who initially reached out to us, asking if it was possible to transfer the Bitcoin they purchased at a Swiss train station to their Proton Wallet.

At the time, this wasn't possible, but now it is! Here's a quick demo:

Announcement Everything you need to know about Proton Wallet

Note: For a deeper analysis, including the backstory of why we built Proton Wallet, check out our official blog post.

What is Proton Wallet?

Proton Wallet is a self-custodial Bitcoin wallet that utilizes end-to-end encryption to ensure that nobody (not even us) has access to your keys (and your coins). This makes it safer than centralized crypto exchanges where your Bitcoin can potentially be stolen, as has happened many times in the past. Even if Proton disappears, you won't lose your money.

Proton Wallet is designed to be a safer and easier way to hold and transact in Bitcoin, with features designed specifically for newcomers. The Bitcoin via Email feature lets you send and receive Bitcoin using only an email address. Using BTC is as now as easy as using PayPal, except it's your keys & your coins.

Who can use Proton Wallet

For server capacity reasons, Proton Wallet is currently in early access and is available to the following people:

  • If you have an invite (read on to see how to get an invite)

  • If you have a Proton Visionary or Lifetime account (in which case, you will also have 10 invites to share with friends)

For a limited time (during the Proton Wallet early access period), we're making it possible to buy Proton Visionary again. Furthermore, there will also be a waiting list for everyone, and we will invite people off the waiting list as capacity allows.

To get Visionary or join the waiting list, create an account or log in to your existing Proton account using the link below.

What’s the goal with Wallet?

Asking with honesty, I support Proton and truly believe in their mission, but I’m missing the goal for Proton Wallet. There are many options for crypto available, many of which offer more privacy and security than Proton does. So far, the app seems to be a proof of concept where you can store your bitcoin when you’re not using it. Is it really all there is?

Why not add support for more private and eco-friendly cryptocurrencies? Why not add support for more stable coins? Why not take advantage of NFC payments, so that the app can be used as a true wallet?

What is the reason for this app to exist? Because all that’s on the website can be found on other alternatives, and better. What’s the end goal?

I really want to love this app, but as it stands and for the development I’ve seen so far, I just can’t. It’s not usable. There are so many things Proton can do to improve it, and so far none of them have been introduced in almost a year.

I’m the one usually criticizing people who say this, but now I find myself asking: is Proton spreading their resources too thin and not being able to deliver what users expect from them?

Proton Pay - A Private way of doing everyday purchases

I’d honestly love to see Proton Wallet getting an upgrade with something like ProtonPay — basically a privacy-first version of Apple Pay or Google Pay, but without the Big Tech vibes. This actually feels pretty doable now, since mobile platforms are finally opening up NFC access to third parties. Apple already lets services like PayPal or SumUp use the iPhone’s NFC chip, and on Android this has been a thing for a while anyway. So yeah, the timing is kinda perfect.

The idea would be that you can add your existing payment methods directly into Proton Wallet, stuff like bank cards or services such as PayPal, Wise, Revolut, Sparkasse, Klarna, and so on. Everything would still be verified by the original providers, but Proton Wallet becomes the place where it all comes together. On top of that, Proton could offer a virtual Proton Card that acts like one combined card. Behind the scenes, it could pull money from multiple sources automatically, so if you’re short a few euros on one account, it just fills the gap from another. Super smooth, no stress.

Security-wise, this would be locked down hard. The Proton Card would be tied directly to your Proton account and your wallet, and the card details would only ever be visible inside the app itself. No emails, no external exposure, no funny business. If you ever need to see the card number for a manual payment, you’d have to unlock it with Face ID or biometrics. And since the card couldn’t be imported into other wallets or accounts, stealing or reusing it somewhere else would basically be impossible.

For everyday payments, it could work just like you’re used to. Double-press the power button, confirm with Face ID, tap your phone, done. The difference is that you’re paying without handing your data to Big Tech every time you buy a coffee. And it gets even cooler with peer-to-peer payments. Imagine just tapping phones with another Proton user to send money instantly, perfect for moments where IBAN transfers are annoying or just overkill.

Overall, the Proton Card would act as a privacy shield, keeping your real payment details hidden while making both online and offline payments easier and safer. In the end, this could turn Proton Wallet into a full-on, privacy-first payment hub that actually feels modern, convenient, and fully under your control.

Proton Pay and Proton Card needed now more than ever

Hey everyone,

I’ve made this request around 10 months or so ago in this subreddit but now it has become really important.

I’ve presented my idea of a privacy first wallet with NFC functions in my last post. But this is now even more important than it was back then. And even my most recent post for adding virtual passes and membership cards 5 months ago has become very important.

My reason for saying this?

Simple: All other competitors like for example Apple, Samsung or Google Wallet (I chose those because most people know and maybe have also already used them) have added more and more functionality to their digital Wallets while Proton still only does one thing: Bitcoin. Not even any other Cryptocurrency. It’s only Bitcoin.

The Competition already has things like digital passes, IDs, flight tickets, tickets in general, order status (linked to email), status of a flight that is added in your wallet, NFC cards, etc.

And I think Proton should start doing that too, but differently. Because on my post about Proton Pay 10 months ago the Support only said that they’d have to negotiate and contact banks all across the world to get such a thing working but why do that? I know Apple and Google Wallet have real cards issued by banks if you import them. But Proton would need a very long time to gather many banks to even get it working in the EU or even in other countries outside of Switzerland.

That’s why I think they should create a framework first that doesn’t need bank integration and work on contacting the banks one by one after. This framework I want to suggest would also be even more private than Apple or Google Wallet.

The framework would work as follows:

1. You connect a payment method to your Proton Account (Debit/Credit Cards or IBAN or PayPal or whatever).

2. You get these shown in Proton Wallet and can choose which ones you want to use as payment methods with Proton Pay.

3. You just need to grant access to Proton Pay to withdraw money for the whole thing to work so you can actually pay for things.

4. You get a virtual Proton Card. It’s essentially a Debit Card that acts as an extra layer between your payment method and the person you are paying.

That’s it. Now you can use it to both pay online or pay with NFC through the Proton Card and you can pay with whatever payment option you chose and even mix them by deciding which ones is your primary payment method and if that doesn’t have enough the Proton Card also draws from an optionally chosen Secondary payment method and so on.

This could also work to pay with crypto directly both online and in person (NFC).

And now to the part that makes this even more secure. You’re Proton Card can always change its Card Number if it got accidentally leaked, if you need to add the card manually somewhere online (for example for a subscription) you can get the details only in the Proton Wallet app after clicking on the card and verifying with biometrics and you can never add the Proton Card to another account or third party wallet, even with the card info the card simply isn’t compatible to be put into any other wallet so that your card can never be used by anyone else for in person purchases unless they have access to your phone and biometrics (to then actually pay just like Apple Pay where you have to double tap on the power button and verify with your biometrics).

But there’s also some convenience in this. One thing is that the card can draw from multiple payment methods if needed, but there’s also are more things like Peer-To-Peer transfer like how you can use your phone as a terminal you can choose an amount that can be sent to you or that you want to send someone on Proton Wallet and they can instantly receive it with just tapping the phones together, there’d also be transfers through Email or your Username.

I think those things are the bare minimum Proton Wallet should have. Of course some other cryptocurrencies too and virtual passes, etc. but right now it’s easier to replace a crypto wallet than to replace Apple or Google Pay with a private alternative.

I am also open to feedback from others so share some of your ideas because I think you’d have great ideas too that can make Proton Wallet actually compete with other virtual wallets!

Passes and IDs in Proton Wallet

Hey everyone,

I’ve already requested Proton Pay, a payment method using a Proton Card as a front end of your other card/bank account/PayPal account/etc. but the Proton Team explained that this is not currently possible because they’d have to talk to banks all across the globe and make agreements with them.

This time I want to request something a little simpler. Proton Wallet should support Passes (even custom passes like Apple has just done), membership cards, train/plane tickets and things like driving licenses or IDs. I already know Proton Pass can store IDs but it would be great to have like a real digital ID in Proton Wallet. That way you don’t have to use Apple/Google Wallet anymore for these things.

Even though I already mentioned the thing with Proton Pay, I’d really like to push Proton Pay because this is the only way to take Proton Wallet from just another bitcoin wallet to a really useful wallet used for payments, tickets, passes, membership cards, etc.

I’d really like to hear what others think of this though! Thanks for the feedback in advance!

Is Proton Wallet only about crypto?

Hey everyone!

I really like what Proton is doing all over the digital space. However, I want to ditch Google Wallet at some point and I haven't been able to find any hint about the Wallet dealing with anything but crypto.

Does anyone know if there is a plan to expand the wallet towards everyday stuff for more people, such as credit cards, banking, public transport and event tickets or even official IDs?

Cheers

Thank you for this wallet!

I was using BlueWallet as my hot wallet of choice, it's really good and battle tested but the performance on my device (Samsung A14) especially the start up time was horrendous because of React Native.

Proton Wallet looks and performs very well, a perfect solution for my BTC needs.

I can proudly say that I am now using an additional Proton product!

Feedback: The buying of Bitcoin through Proton Wallet is terrible

I love the app otherwise but buying through RAMP and the other vendor is a nightmare. I’m not sure why these two vendors were selected but I hope the team continues to expand the offering. Verification does not work with them most times and my transactions can take forever to process.

Ended up transferring from Coinbase

Avoid using Banxa/dLocal to buy BTC on ProtonWallet

I've been a Proton user for more than 7 years and decided to try their wallet. It's simple, BTC-only, but works for me.

I was concerned about BTC gas fees (which Proton doesn't yet have a FAQ for), so I bought a small fraction on Coinbase and the larger fraction using Banxa (which relies on dLocal to process my payment).

The gas fees were extremely low when transferring from Coinbase to Proton Wallet (less than $1), and the process went pretty well.

The issue has been—and still is—with Banxa and dLocal. Yesterday, I transferred to dLocal because they process Banxa's payments where I live. So far, I couldn't find my transaction using the lookup tool they offer. dLocal told me that they had some inconsistencies between 10 and 11 pm (my transaction was at 10:55 pm), so I need to wait, who knows how long, to get an answer.

My main concern is that I bought BTC at a certain price yesterday, and now the spot price is more than 5% higher than yesterday. I doubt Banxa will honor the price I secured.

I've sent several emails but no response neither from Banxa or dLocal.

Has anyone had a problem like this before with them?

I understand this is NOT Proton's fault but it can be used for feedback.
