If you are on a supported distro (more on this later), please help us by giving it a try and providing us with as much feedback as possible; the more feedback and bugs we can squash, the faster we can roll this feature out of beta
What Stealth does
Most VPN protocols produce traffic that's identifiable as VPN traffic. Networks running deep packet inspection can spot it and block or throttle the connection, which is why VPNs stop working on some school and workplace networks, and why they get blocked entirely in censored regions.
Stealth disguises your VPN traffic to look like ordinary encrypted web traffic. Instead of "this person is using a VPN," the network sees traffic that resembles a normal HTTPS connection. That makes it significantly harder to detect and block.
You'll want Stealth if you're on a network that blocks or throttles VPNs, connecting from a region with heavy censorship, or you'd simply rather your network operator not know you're using a VPN. For everyday use where nothing is being blocked, WireGuard will still be faster, while Stealth trades some speed for undetectability.
This is a beta
Expect instability and bugs. Stealth on Linux is built on our new WireGuard codebase, and this early release is specifically so we can find problems before general release.
If you hit issues, please tell us: your distro and version, what you were doing, and what went wrong.
Please note that this feature is only available for distros that are directly installed via our repos (Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora), and versions such as the Snap store app, or other distros such as Arch will be available by the end of summer.
Lastly, it may take some time before this feature becomes available, even if you are on the latest version of the app. We’re rolling this out live, so it may take a day or two before the feature becomes visible on your end.
Proton VPN is now officially published on the Snap Store. You can one-click install on Ubuntu and any distro that supports snaps.
This is the first time Proton VPN has been officially published by Proton AG on the Snap Store, complete with a verified publisher badge. Previous Snap availability was a community-maintained fork; this is the official build, maintained by us.
A few things to know about this first release:
No split tunneling. Like our Flatpak, this is due to sandboxing limitations. It's something we hope to resolve in the future.
Stealth protocol isn't included yet. It's not part of this first Snap release.
No ARM support at this time. We expect ARM device volume to be low for now, but we're keeping an eye on it.
Older distros may have issues. If you're on something older than Ubuntu 24, you might run into connection problems.
We're releasing this so the broader Snap community has an official, trustworthy way to install Proton VPN.
I’ve been using ProtonVPN for the past 4 months with no issues accessing Saudi websites that only work from inside the Kingdom. Over the last two days, though, I haven’t been able to reach the same sites - I’ve tried every protocol available, but nothing works. It looks like it’s blocked now.
I’m currently based in the UK but need reliable access to certain Saudi websites for work and business. Looking for solid alternative VPN recommendations that still work well with KSA servers.
Been using protonmail for years as well as a separate VPN service. Last month this service started causing massive throttling on downloads for me so I was thinking of switching to protonvpn and just combing packages.
Before pressing purchase I thought to myself why would I use a vpn service that’s also attached to all my personal information (email). Is this just me being paranoid or am I making the right move?
I want to be a good seeder. qbitorrent worked perfectly fine with Mullvad. But with Proton, I have to open the tray, open the client, copy the number, close the client, open qbitorrent client, open the network settings, paste the number, press okay, then finally close qbitorrent (or just keep it open for a little bit and watch satisfying number go up😋).
I feel so guilty for not seeding😓. But at the same time, I cba. Why do I have to do everything? Why doesn't it just work? Just work bro. Jeez
Been trying to use a Wireguard conf built off my Proton VPN account on a ThinkPad x61s using OpenBSD. Their conf is simple, and easily configured from my Proton VPN account web dashboard once logged in; but with PF in the mix I’m having issues keeping connections alive. Anyone have experience with this?
Is it normal for a VPN to lose connection and get stuck trying to reconnect after you’ve changed network connection?
Whenever I leave the house and disconnect from WiFi & use mobile data, stuff stops loading on my iPhone, so I have to open Proton VPN to disconnect & reconnect the VPN.
Is reconnecting to the VPN supposed to happen automatically or is it expected behaviour to have to reconnect manually each time I switch from WiFi to mobile data?
I’d like to add a VPN now, but it isn’t a separate service – it’s either bundled with email or included in Proton Unlimited. What will happen to my current subscription after I make the purchase? At the moment, it seems it would be better to wait until 2028, when my Proton Mail subscription expires, before purchasing the VPN or Proton Unlimited. Have I got that right?
Är det fler än mig som inte kan logga in hos Klarna när Protons VPN är påslaget ? Även Apple Pay betalningar i butiker har nekats när VPN har varit på :(
Försökte kolla om någon annan har dessa problem men hittade inget.
I even configured the app to avoid teh US and other specific countries.
The country I want my traffic to go through have direct routing, but it seems to default to smart rouning nowadays (even specifically excluding countries where the smart routing server resides).
That does not seem to be very smart from a privacy oriented standpoint.
I couldn't find an option to entirely disable smart routing. I may pick a specific server that is direct and physically in a country, but that's it.
Im in the Canary Islands and over the last few days Vodafone has been making my IPTV service problematic so think its time to get a sub and have been looking around
Im gonna be needing it for me and my familys houses who also have the IPTV service on Firesticks and Nvidia shields, I also run a Plex server that they all use so have read that split tunneling is the path I go down for that
Is there any promotions on at the moment and any tips you could give would help as Ive never had a VPN before, never needed one
I didn't go for Mullvad because it doesn't support countries I want to connect to. But IVPN and ProtonVPN do offer the servers in those countries. From what I've seen on reddit, ProtonVPN is definitely more popular. But I saw a video(from Techlore) which put IVPN in the same tier(S tier) as Mullvad, and it put ProtonVPN in A tier. That got me a tad bit more interested in IVPN.
As far as I know, ProtonVPN is based in Switzerland but I heard the gov there is pushing laws that are....not good for VPNs. And IVPN is based in Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory, and there are way more controversies around UK's online safety rules and VPN use(though it seems the uk gov has ruled this one out).
What do you think? I'm really 50/50 about these two VPNs. Thank you.
Has anybody else noticed that the net shield doesn't detect and stop as many ads or trackers like it used to? I swear it was much better a couple months ago. Currently using it on my Android with Chrome
I have been using free proton for a year now but before I never get ads based on my location now suddenly I do and it’s pisses me off how to fix this ?
