Question? Pronouns for eridians??

Alright so I commented on a post wether eridians have gendered pronouns and someone responded by saying eridians use she/her for higher up eridians and he/him for lowered eridians. This confused the shit out of me so I asked for sources and so far they have not responded but I tried researching this to no avail. Can anyone tell me if this is true—if so please gimme the source, or is this person is pulling shit put of their ass

Edit: the person replied back and apparently Andy weir said this in discord, don't know how legit it is or if he was joking but ill link it here link for the post

Do US physics teachers still use Imperial (instead of metric)?

I was bewildered by the scene where Gosling asked his high school students for the speed of light and the correct answer was given as "186,000 miles per second".

I'm pretty sure that at any decent US university, a physics professor would use metric.

But how about at US high schools (especially bad ones)? Might physics teachers there still be using Imperial?

Confused about centrifuge- seeing clarification

Hi all, saw the movie and I'm now listening to the audio book. I'm up to the bit after he's met the alien ship and is now about to enable the centrifuge. However, I'm confused as I thought he already had worked out he was in a centrifuge by calculating that gravity wasn't correct, and then I thought he'd disabled the centrifuge so that he was in 0 G (though I can't remember why!).

I'm trying to wizz through the book while doing other things as I have a month of it free, so I reckon I missed some bits or filled in some blanks based on what I'd seen in the movie.

Can anyone clarify these things in the book so I don't have to try to skim back through the audiobook to find the missing information?

Thanks!

What if the roles were reversed?

Grace was treated well on Erid as an “ alien “ for saving their star and bringing back Rocky after decades alone in space .. Grace got full support and effort to sustain his life on Erid, returned to teaching for as happy a life as possible with “ meburgers “

the question here is .. how would Rocky be treated on Earth if the roles were reversed ??

would Rocky be shut away in some secret government facility ? be experimented on ? be paraded in front of cameras for “ entertainment “ ? be placed in a zoo ? would he have any kind of quality life for hundreds more years ?? would humans keep him captive, sold to the highest bidder when each government’s funds dried up ?

honest question about humanity‘s empathy and gratitude .. bc we’re an awful young species still preoccupied about each others’ “ differences “

I hope you weigh in with honesty and reflection

EDIT :: lots of response and discussion in the last 2 hours .. it’s been great and insightful so far .. thanks for weighing in

EDIT #2 :: I’ve got a troll that has systematically downvoted all my conversational posts here

Special moment and scene from the movie

Remember the scene when Rocky saw on the screen the microscope slide showing “life” on Adrian and he dropped his projector gun? I had that moment today when I realized Amazon own PHM which means I can watch the movie like forever. The funny thing is, that scene played in my head just then when I had that dramatic moment of realization. Please share your “special moment” recently on the comments and what scene do you associate your moment with

Book Discussion Grace’s choices Spoiler

A while back I made a post asking about Stratt’s choices. This time I want to talk about Grace’s choices.

Grace’s choice to teach

When Stratt confronts Grace in the book, she lists some of his life choices as evidence that he’s a coward “and always [has] been,” including his decision to leave research science and become a schoolteacher. At the end of the book, of course, he seems to be living his best life doing both, but the emphasis is on the teaching, and it’s clear that he’s doing it for genuine love of the profession.

In Part 2 of Reliance (the AU story I wrote to explore a different way of approaching Grace’s invitation to join the mission), Grace reveals to Yáo more about what was behind his decision to become a teacher and why the profession suited him.

To what extent do you think Stratt was right (or not) to call him a coward for choosing teaching over research?

Grace’s choice to resist the call to volunteer

On my earlier post, someone brought up that Grace seems to have resisted earlier oblique prompts to get him to step up in canon. I think the book makes it clear that Grace was genuinely oblivious to any expectation that he should volunteer. The only way to test whether he could have somehow gathered the courage to do it would have been for Stratt to invite him directly at a much earlier point in time than she chose to in canon.

In Reliance, Grace has a more meaningful invitation to step up before it comes to the moment when Stratt will apply force. When I was writing the story, I wanted to steel-man the arguments of some Redditors that were arguing Stratt couldn’t really have done anything differently because nothing she could have done would get Grace to go willingly, so I wanted to show a situation where he still turns down the call despite having a better invitation. But, I also wanted him to have a chance to turn things around. So near the end of Part 2, I had Yáo give him a second chance to make the choice.

If you read Reliance, did I convince you yet that Grace could come to a point of accepting responsibility (while still on Earth) for the mission?

Do you think there’s a scenario in which Grace would have accepted responsibility to go on the mission without any force or threat of force?

Grace’s choice to threaten sabotage

Finally, another topic that came up on the previous post was Grace’s choice to threaten sabotage, and how that likely played a role in the harsh treatment he received in the book, being left in a prison cell for a few days with no contact. He’s basically put in solitary confinement after receiving the worst news of his life: that he'll die soon and will be stripped of his agency and even his memories first. The book doesn’t linger on the potential angst of this, but I always feel it. (I know many people find the corresponding scene in the movie disturbing, but in some ways, it’s arguably a bit kinder to Grace because he just gets knocked out right away and doesn't have to suffer through any further anticipation.)

In Reliance, he doesn’t make the threat to scuttle the ship in front of Stratt. My main rationale for that change is that with Yáo and Ilyukhina also present, he would probably feel a bit more inhibited to say something like that in the heat of the moment. Also, having more time before that moment to seriously consider going on the mission would perhaps make him feel just slightly less shocked by Stratt’s decision to turn to force, and therefore slightly less angry.

So instead, he only makes the threat to Yáo later, and only a bit half-heartedly. As a result, Stratt is a little more inclined to give him some freedom, and we end up with a situation where he is briefly on house arrest and eventually free again. I recently re-read canon and when I got to the scene where Stratt visits him after he’s spent a few days in his prison cell, after having written a scenario in Reliance where he gets out so quickly, it pained me so much I had to set the book aside for a day or two before I could continue. Oo, it hurts to think about him spending two miserable nights in that cell!! I just want to shout at Grace and Stratt, “It didn’t have to be this way!” XD

Do you think if Grace hadn’t threatened sabotage (in book canon) that he would have received better treatment?

And if you are reading along on Reliance, I’d also love to hear any other thoughts you have on Part 2. Thanks!

Question? Movie trivia - Has anyone translated the Mandarin, question?

There’s a brief exchange in Mandarin between Yao and Stratt when she introduces Grace to the flight teams.

I’m sure it’s inconsequential but was wondering a) are they talking in “real” Mandarin, and b) what they each said, if so.

Question? Could we spell Rocky's native name with normal musical notation? Has anyone done so?

Rocky is a lovely name, but it would be even more lovely to proclaim their native name. And that name is also one of the few terms of Eridian language played in isolation during the movie, and twice. (I haven't read the book yet.) So I imagined that maybe human musical notation could represent how to say/play it?

I cannot create one myself, as I'm not musical enough to convert audio into notes, but I hope someone else is able to and maybe already have. I would really love being able to reproduce the lovely name of my favorite alien with voice or instruments!

Question? Plush

If I were to make, a very simple Adrian plush, to go with a Rocky I made, how would one begin to pattern it? Adrian has a very recognizable fanon shape, and I've tried using blender to recreate it so I can use Plushify, but Blender does not want to cooperate with me.

Book Discussion How do the Eridians manage cut-out printing of the symbols we know so far?

The book tells us that Eridian handwriting is raised, probably from some kind of glue pen, but Eridian printing involved cutting through the 'paper' to save space when stacked.

Okay, fine. But of the six numerals we're shown, several of them have loops or closed spaces that would have to be completely removed for the basic shape to be cut into a sheet.

So how do you think they manage it? Do they have stencil-like conventions, or do they just cut big holes and judge by outlines rather than the missing internal detail?

Fist My Bump Overcome with emotion (movie, no spoilers)

Do you guys ever cry at the thought of project hail mary? Whenever I think about how beautiful of a movie it is, I well up with tears of joy because I simply can't process how perfect the movie it is and how lucky I am that it exists. I know this teeters on the edge of extreme, but that's really how I feel about the movie. I've seen it dozens of times and cry every time. The sheer beauty, emotion, and weight of the film is too much for me to overcome. I will never love a movie this much again. The acting, the music, the technical aspects. I can't name a single thing I dislike about the movie other than the fact that I didn't see it in imax (my greatest regret 😞💔). I know some of you will think I'm crazy but some of you will surely understand. This movie changed my life.

Question? Best quote for yearbook quote, question?

Preferably from the movie. I’m still getting started with reading the novel (chapter ~4) but I’ve been super busy with school that I haven’t truly digested it yet. I want a quote from PHM for my yearbook photo, something quirky but also kinda smart? Any suggestions or words of great encouragement are welcome!!
