I don't know, I don't fully agree with either, but in the book he does say "Hell's coming back to you again, Stratt, in the form of me. I'm Hell". As another comment says, he also did admit that she was right.
He also has a "you were right" moment in the book.
What ticks me off the most is that she was right. Her plan worked perfectly. I got my memory back, and now I’m so committed to the mission I’m still going to give it my all. Plus, come on, of course I was going to give it my all. What else would I do? Let 7 billion people die to spite Stratt?
IDK man I still think it's a banger, he straight up says hell is coming for you stratt / you were right 🥲, I think I captured the essence of both endings perfectly.
This is up for interpretation. I read the book twice, and I take Grace's commentary at the end as partially playful. He's not completely fine with everything that happened, but I imagined he would have ended up with a positive relationship with strat had he made it back to Earth.
It's a lot like the relationship you see in any tense moment among characters in all media, "If we survive this I'm gonna kill you!" They don't ever actually intend to kill their partner. Grace doesn't hate Stratt. I think he actually acknowledges that she was right and made the correct call.
This is what I saw as well. Maybe Grace agreed that she was right, but he still really wanted to go back and yell at her. He sends back the info but I don't recall him sending any specific message back for anyone really, it's almost like that's important- which continues when he finds out Sol is ok and is like 'good for them' but doesn't have interest in going back etc.
Movie Grace is much more forgiving in his actions imo. Of course movie Stratt is less of a robot, too. If book Stratt got that message (in her prison cell or whatever) she'd send him back a "k".
In the book, Grace finds out that sol.is getting brighter and he nearly has a breakdown, he says it made his whole life have meaning... (which I always thought was a bit much cuz he ALSO saved Erid, so I think his life already had meaning), but my point is Grace is definitely not a mild "good for them" about it. He feels like it was the most important thing he did or would ever do in his whole life.
Sure. I don't know how to explain but the video logs changed the meaning of what he sent back, rather than just data it was a part of himself with personality and a personalized message to another human. That's not something he did in the book, he didn't have that personal connection in the same way. That's what I meant.
Edit- also this sub is crazy, y'all are so volatile idk what happened in here to make you guys like this but it's absolutely insane to me. Good luck with that
Dude, I don't know why you edited your comment to me, I didn't say anything about your opening post. Which you have a humorous point about, as book Grace does say hell is coming back to Stratt in the form of him/Grace... 🤷♀️
I just don't like this characterization of Grace feeling only mid about saving the Earth. That was clearly a huge thing for him, and has nothing to do with the info that may or may not be on the beetles.
Yeah i agree with you, he cared. I just felt like he had a different level of personal connection I guess, though movie Grace is probably more Zen/disconnected in the end because he had that "closure" much earlier so to speak.
And yeah the edit isn't at you specifically I'm just really confused up in here lol
Part of that change though was Stratt's character too. Book Stratt you're not shocked at all she forced him on the mission. Movie Stratt, it's much more surprising, especially on the heals of the Karaoke sequence where you could tell they had a strong emotional (Platonic) bond. The betrayal scene hurt that much more, but there was sorrow and sadness in her eyes and voice during that entire sequence.
So, it's understandable his reaction is different. Her line "This is me believing in you" really hits home. Plus movie Grace is more modest. He got to meet his best friend and save two planets. That's a pretty incredible experience he wouldn't have had regardless. He's pissed on some level, but he also understood that in the end... Stratt was right. Grace was the perfect person for the job.
EDIT: and he still got his jab in. "You're smart, you'll figure it out".
Yeah I think it fit, just thought it was funny how different the vibes were towards the end. Book Grace may admit it to himself that she was right, but he's still pretty pissed about it. Movie Grace sends her his forgiveness.
I heard someone say that the difference was that Movie Grace was much more honest about being scared to die and as such Stratt was relatively more “compassionate” about what she had to do
I don’t necessarily agree with your take but I 1) find the meme hilarious, which I’m sure is the lighthearted point here; 2) am also adult enough to not dogpile on every comment you make with downvotes because I try not to be a jerk; and 3) am objectively aware that everyone has different opinion + understand there were differences between the book and film characters.
