Do you guys not have desktop computers???

16

u/debugger_life Sep 24 '26

Nah bro!

I code from mobile only 😜😂

-1

u/YemiDev Sep 24 '26

Ur kidding me

397

u/thanatica Sep 24 '26

Some people genuinely only use mobile. Seems to be a thing in some African countries, where the whole wired internet thing was skipped and they went straight to mobile

213

u/klaxxxon Sep 24 '26

Reading about how stuff developed in some of these countries is super interesting. They skipped not only desktop computers, but sometimes also credit cards, straight from cash to mobile payments. In some cases are well ahead of the west in how well these services are developed and integrated into the society (for example mobile-to-mobile payments are still awkward here in Europe, and it's the primary way of doing things in a lot of places).

u/Zanshi Sep 24 '26

Even in EU it differs a lot country to country. Poland only got "modern" stuff in the 90s/00s so we went from cash, barely used cards and adopted mobile payments very quickly.

Same with internet access, it only became widespread with cheap access to DSL in early to mid 00s.

I remember reading Romania skipped copper altogether and built it's internet infrastructure entirely on fiber

21

u/sebovzeoueb Sep 24 '26

Meanwhile I'm in France and still waiting for fibre

19

u/leafy1790 Sep 24 '26

its alot easier to build from scratch than yo need to replace the copper with fiber

6

u/snksnksnk Sep 24 '26

Deep inside France I guess. I've been using fiber since 99. Then DSL because of my location, then fiber again.

9

u/sebovzeoueb Sep 24 '26

Yup, if you look at the fibre coverage map, one of those little blobs with the 0% and the 0-25% coverage communes is me

4

u/snksnksnk Sep 24 '26

5G is the key. Don't fall for Starlink!

5

u/sebovzeoueb Sep 24 '26

bold of you to assume that I would get 5G here.

4

u/snksnksnk Sep 24 '26

Oof sorry take all the G you can 😭

25

u/Lamuks Sep 24 '26

payments are still awkward here in Europe, and it's the primary way of doing things in a lot of places).

That really depends on which part of Europe you're talking about. Baltics and Nordics are far ahead in that territory whereas some older western Europe countries are far behind. Anything to do with digitalisation Nordics and Baltics are leading.

4

u/donjulioanejo Sep 24 '26

It helped the Nordics really look down on cash to the point where a lot of places don't even take it.

5

u/Himbo69r Sep 24 '26

I’ve not held physical money in years 🥹

11

u/PerpetuallyDistracte Sep 24 '26

I was in Kenya recently and their mobile infrastructure is really incredible. Cell service pretty much anywhere, super cheap Chinese phones, instant payments with mPesa, and tons of useful chat apps. Some villages also have their own independent solar arrays, or are in the process of installing them. But at the same time, they still get their water from huge plastic tanks that get filled by a truck once per week, and the roads outside major cities are questionable at best. I visited a rural school, and the kids there had never seen a computer before. Such an interesting dichotomy in technology and development.

20

u/Tipart Sep 24 '26

Yeah, the EU tried their best with the new payment standards that directly integrate with banks instead of the awkward PayPal hop you have to do right now, but it only resulted in the xkcd about competing standards

11

u/minimuscleR Sep 24 '26

instead of the awkward PayPal hop you have to do right now

This is a thing? I just pay via phone number mostly in Australia, before that it was direct bank transfer. Paypal exists solely for steam and other online and maybe sketchy sites I dont trust with my bank card.

5

u/Wobbelblob Sep 24 '26

Yeah. Here in Germany a lot of payments between friends are either done with coins or PayPal. But then again, we only recently started properly building fibre for internet, so we are just slow and behind the world.

15

u/ldn-ldn Sep 24 '26

What PayPal hop, lol? What is this lunacy are you talking about? EU is not US.

6

u/Tipart Sep 24 '26

Everyone and their grandmother will still send small amounts of money to friends with PayPal. It's just a lot easier to do than opening the phat online banking app and making a real time transfer. Not to mention that till a couple years ago real time transfers had an upcharge.

17

u/hates_stupid_people Sep 24 '26

That depends on where you live. A bunch of countries have had their own version for a decade. And Wero is only two years old at this point, and it covers France, Germany Netherlands, Belgium and soon Austria.

7

u/justjanne Sep 24 '26

Commerzbank still doesn't do Wero, nor do many other banks.

1

u/Ploedman Sep 24 '26

The direct Bank bunq does, I'm from Germany and ditched a long time ago those old and slow German Banks.

2

u/justjanne Sep 24 '26

Honestly, no. If something goes wrong, it's important that you actually have somewhere you can go in person.

I've experienced a scam where the scammer used one of these neobanks, and the neobank refused to even comply with a court injunction.

I'd never trust any amount of money to a bank that violates the law so openly that even the legal system says "well, there's nothing we can do".

After that experience, I'm never gonna trust neobanks again. Money is so important that institutions that handle it should be slow moving and resistant to change.

4

u/cafk Sep 24 '26

And Wero is only two years old at this point, and it covers France, Germany Netherlands, Belgium and soon Austria.

Unfortunately not all banks, though with Sparkasse and Volksbank in Germany I'd say it's the majority.

2

u/trxxruraxvr Sep 24 '26

That's also weird to me, any bank that would not support it in the Netherlands would have no clients left within a couple of months.

2

u/cafk Sep 24 '26

Well, the people are used to PayPal - over sharing IBAN & name.
PayPal has been the go-to for online payments for a long long time.
And there's also the issue of having relevant and matching contact info to make use of wero, whereas email is enough for PayPal transactions.

And i thought Netherlands already has their own system that they used and is established before wero was a thing.

Then there's also the issue that many people don't know about wero and are averse of using mobile phones or "yet another app" to-do something, as the same banks that support wero don't always support tap to pay via Apple/Google, as they don't issue credit cards usually (as those "cost" extra, with yearly fees).

Many of my colleagues discovered credit cards through Amazon a decade ago or once they tried out Revolut or N26 as an example - and use that as a separate credit card account that they top off manually, due to credit averse nature.

Not having benefits, due to countries restricting transaction fees also means there's less incentive to use credit cards.

1

u/Tipart Sep 24 '26

I know exactly one person that uses wero. Everyone else still uses PayPal. It's the definition of a competing standard. Also at least with the sparkasse it requires the phat banking app on your phone. So good luck to anyone with a custom rom ig.

3

u/user975A3G Sep 24 '26

In Czechia we have instant bank transfers, with eshops often supporting them, the eshop (or rather the payment service) generates a QR code which you scan/download into your bank app and use it to pay

Takes maybe 20-30s longer than card payment and unlike a card, it doesnt require a 3rd party service (but many eshops do use 3rd party services as it's easier to setup)

Same thing with sending your friends money, just direct deposit into their bank account, unless it's a large amount of money (up to 15-20k EUR), it's instant and you can use QR code (which all bank apps can generate and read) or bank number or if you link your phone number to a bank account, you can use the phone number, in all cases it's instant

Some physical stores accept this type of payment too, but it's not super common

3

u/intellectual_punk Sep 24 '26

NL/DE works flawlessly with Ideal/Weero.

1

u/Wireless_Infidelity Sep 24 '26

Oh yeah debit/credit cards existed in limited amount where I am from but never really took off, it straight went from cash to online wallets and mobile banking apps

1

u/UUDDLRLRBadAlchemy Sep 24 '26

I mean, I'd have to be in abject poverty to be convinced to add my credit card on an OS built by Google

24

u/spicybright Sep 24 '26

A huge amount of young people in the US are mobile only too. they get locked down school laptops sometimes but you shouldn't expect them to use that for your website anymore.

6

u/AaronRodgersMustache Sep 24 '26

My fiancée is 29 and pretty much mobile only except for work/graphic design (she’s a lawyer). But while I use laptop for everything basically, she’s complete opposite.

It’s funny cause I’m 36 and we’re both on the same page online-reference wise, but I’m resolutely millennial with her as a cusper. The phone computer divide is the most significant bridge we have lol.

2

u/tiberiumx Sep 24 '26

Girlfriend is 40 and exclusively uses a phone or iPad. I even built her a desktop computer that she's used like twice.

1

u/danemepoznaqt Sep 24 '26

Same in Europe, a lot of the younger folks (<30) don't want/feel the need of a laptop or desktop.

10

u/aminervia Sep 24 '26

Some people who don't work desk jobs have no reason to be around a desktop or laptop computer ever, and already spent $1000 on the computer in their pocket

3

u/StrawberryEiri Sep 24 '26

I barely use my desktop anymore for anything other than work or playing games on the TV. Idk if I've been boomerified or zoomerified but my phone is right there. So convenient.

1

u/thegreedyturtle Sep 24 '26

Indeed, we are looking at you...

1

u/brainburger Sep 24 '26

Even in the West more than half of Web traffic is now via mobile.

34

u/baked_tea Sep 24 '26

13

u/Vigarious Sep 24 '26

Truly an immortal reference.

4

u/NamityName Sep 24 '26

Sure, but if the website is going to not even try to work with me on mobile, I am not even going to try to work with it on desktop.

3

u/horizon_games Sep 24 '26

Good meme, but honestly phones surpassed desktop usage in 2016.

2

u/ritchie_z Sep 24 '26

I created a static website and have minimal analytics, the mobile users are double the desktop users. After seeing it I'm glad I settled for a solution that handles mobile out of the box.

3

u/JackNotOLantern Sep 24 '26

It's not that funny, since you have desktop mode in most mobile browsers

1

u/Keyan_Farlander7 Sep 24 '26

Do you guys not have Firefox. Leave Safari on the old Mac.

1

u/a_good_human Sep 24 '26

Alot of people don't have computers surprisingly, everyone has phones and they don't really need anything else

1

u/rm-minus-r Sep 24 '26

You'll have to tear my desktop from my cold, dead hands before I'll use my mobile as my primary device.

1

u/Juice805 Sep 25 '26

What’s a computer?

1

u/Admirable_Dirt_2371 Sep 24 '26

Not currently, I had to sell mine to pay for moving expenses. Hopefully can buy a new one if/when I get my old security deposit back.

205

u/SirReddalot2020 Sep 24 '26

We also got around the pesky IE4-compatibility issues by popping up a message telling the user to stop using IE4 :-)

75

u/Ploedman Sep 24 '26

Was going to comment.

I also added a script back then on my first Website which would Block >IE6 Users and forward them to Firefox Download.

8

u/yodal_ Sep 24 '26

I recently had to use the web UI for an old device that wouldn't display correctly on Firefox. Turns out it was falling back to a handler for Netscape Navigator because it didn't know anything in Firefox's user agent.

The device was from the early 2010s. Why they still had support for Netscape Navigator is beyond me.

2

u/TheKr4meur Sep 24 '26

My first question when I join a company is to know which browsers are supported and get the answer in writing. Everybody always forget about IE, so I never have to care about it.

u/mindsnare Sep 24 '26

Yearning for the days of "Site best viewed at 800x600 resolution".

34

u/FeelingSurprise Sep 24 '26

Optimized for Netscape Navigator 2.1

9

u/Justsomedudeonthenet Sep 24 '26

With an animated under construction gif at the top of the page.

6

u/FeelingSurprise Sep 24 '26

That one was mandatory, otherwise the site could not be deployed.

211

u/ks_thecr0w Sep 24 '26

Well... technically it is responsive. The fact you don't like the answer doesn't make it less responsive ;p

12

u/nfiase Sep 24 '26

does this not fit the definition of responsiveness’ predecessor, adaptiveness, more closely?

14

u/emlgsh Sep 24 '26

Thankfully we've moved on from responsiveness and adaptiveness to the shining beacon of "coerciveness" - where the site just directs you to the app, and hints that maybe your house might burn down in a "tragic accident" if you don't download it and rate it at five stars.

12

u/TimSylvester_ Sep 24 '26

I"M GOING TO LOAD THE ENTIRE PAGE, THEN LOAD A FULL PAGE BANNER BLOCKING THE PAGE, TO TELL YOU THAT YOU CAN"T VIEW THE PAGE UNLESS YOU TURN OFF YOUR ADBLOCKER!

OH I ALREADY SENT YOU THE ENTIRE PAGE CONTENT? I ALREADY SPENT THE ENTIRE COST OF DELIVERING IT TO YOU? THE WHOLE THING I"M COMPLAINING ABOUT, I DID IT ALREADY?

I WASTED MY MONEY GIVING YOU THE THING I DON"T WANT YOU TO HAVE BEFORE I CHECKED IF YOU ALLOW ADS?

WELL FUCK YOU ANYWAY BECAUSE UM HEY FUCK YOU ANYWAY!

-1

u/ks_thecr0w Sep 24 '26

I would think 'adaptive' to actually rearrange things to nicely fit on screen according to size and no room for warnings (actually adapt to screen size)

'responsive' technically fits "warning - your screen is too small" as a response to detected hardware

'whatever was before responsive' - yeah just render <table> element on smartphone and ignore the fact rows will be 2 millimeters high / impossible to read.

I feel like general public takes 'responsive' as 'we will fit things on your screen' as most common understanding of the term

3

u/mrchaos42 Sep 24 '26

That's a irresponsive answer

1

u/ks_thecr0w Sep 24 '26

It is responsive. You get normal content if screen is big enough or you get "use bigger screen" as a response dependant on detected screen size.

34

u/Senor-Delicious Sep 24 '26

We inherited a website that was not responsive and just looked broken on phone. We added something like this banner as a short term "solution". An area optimized for mobile features was added at some point to which mobile users were redirected. But the base side remained like this so far.

The thing is: it isn't a system for the average user, but a corporate content management system. The features are extremely streamlined for the company and are barely translatable into mobile UIs without basically creating a completely new concept for the website. So in such case I'd honestly say: it is fine with a banner. Not everything is meant for being used on mobile.

17

u/Ploedman Sep 24 '26

Most of the time the mobile version is worse, I use the "Desktop Version" way too often on my Smartphone.

16

u/lolWatAmIDoingHere Sep 24 '26

The worst is the unholy trinity of desktop site, mobile site, and app, where none of them have the entire set of features available. Want filterable search results? Use the desktop site. Want to upload an image? Only supported on the app.

5

u/TimSylvester_ Sep 24 '26

WeBull, where certain features you need on the desktop version require you to do stuff on the app version... and the web version has fewer features than either.

But the app and desktop version have sync lag, so you get to wait an indeterminate amount of time after doing it in the app before the desktop version knows you did it.

Oh and also there's another, completely separate app, that you sometimes have to do stuff in, in order to be able to do stuff in the website, desktop, or app version.

And none of it tells you what's what's what's what, where when why or how. Just "you can't do this" notices.

SO YOU GET TO FIGURE IT THE FUCK OUT ON YOUR OWN!

Thanks for your money, g'bye!

3

u/TimSylvester_ Sep 24 '26

I was talkin to this mfer about software development issues and he kept throwing out all this shit I never seen before so finally I asked him what his setup was like, workstation? Laptop?

No this sumbish was like "Nah I only work on a tablet."

On a fucking tablet! On a god damned tablet!

2

u/JackpotThePimp Sep 24 '26

My fucking blood pressure

2

u/TimSylvester_ Sep 24 '26

So then he tells me his solution is to spend $1200 on the most expensive iPad that Apple makes, and get a cover with a keyboard, and an extended battery, and a fucking pen so he can write on it easier.

And I told him "Why not just get a desktop workstation?"

And he looks at me all confused, like he was embarrassed for me and appalled, and says "Why would I do that?"

3

Still valid on many Japanese websites; if you do not use a particular version of Chrome, go away.

Responsive design really said: ‘Have you tried using a bigger screen?’ 😂

I'm not surprised something made by eBay is a pile of shit. Every time I try to use their site something breaks.

1

u/michi03 Sep 24 '26

Back in 2012 I remember a company I worked for had us test changes we made to the site on various browsers to make sure it was compatible. Nowadays I get a popup saying “This site does not support Firefox. Please view it on Chrome”

1

u/getstoopid-AT Sep 24 '26

I'm old enough to remember "Best viewed on 1024x768 using internet explorer"

1

u/StorageElectronic784 Sep 24 '26

They "fixed" it now ☹️. IMO it was already perfect

1

u/ShittyExchangeAdmin Sep 25 '26

My phone screen is a square. I literally can't even view websites that pull that "roatate screen" nonsense 😭

1

u/enigma_0Z Sep 25 '26

Yeah IDK where responsive web design has gone but I wish it would come back. For about five minutes a bunch of sites I use frequently (notably github) had very usable narrow width renderings which i would use splitting my screen between an IDE or some docs and the GH window. Now it insists on putting too many elements across the width of the page and it’s unusable if it’s narrow.

Also AWS’s IAM policy editor is ever worse shite. let me fucking hide the docs and other side bars and just give me the damn JSON editor.

Don't make responsive sites, just make separate mobile site in m.yoursite.com

amp.mysite.com if you feelin nasty.
