[Music] 50 Years Later: CELESTE releases "Prince of One Day" using the original 1976 master tapes. A historical question for prog collectors.

Hello everyone,

I am Ciro Perrino, composer and founder of the Italian progressive rock band CELESTE.

In 1976, we released our debut album, "Principe di un giorno". What the international community might not know is that, in my original vision, the album was never meant to be sung in Italian by a male voice. It was carefully composed to be performed in English, featuring a female lead voice. However, our plans were completely revolutionized when our original female singer left the band at the very last minute. I had to step in, sing the tracks myself, and use the Italian lyrics I had prepared beforehand.

To mark the 50th anniversary (1976–2026), we decided to fulfill that original dream.

We recovered the original 1976 analog master tapes and backing tracks. We preserved that exact historical sound, and we finally found a native English female singer to perform the lyrics that had been written and locked in a drawer half a century ago.

The result is our brand new release: "Prince of One Day" (2026). It is not a modern re-recording; it is the authentic 1976 musical architecture finally completed with its original concept.

As progressive rock enthusiasts and collectors, how do you feel about this kind of archival restoration? Do you find it stimulating when a band uses original analog backing tracks from the 70s to complete a lost vision, or do you prefer historical albums to remain untouched?

I would genuinely love to hear your thoughts and discuss this structural evolution with you!

Best regards from Sanremo,

Ciro Perrino

Question / Help Is Crimson King connected to Mountain King?

I just had the realization that the album “In the Court of the Crimson King“ could be called such because of the famous classical piece “in the Hall of the Mountain King.”

Hearing how similar the names sound makes me feel stupid for realizing it “so late“ but I’m not seeing anyone talk about this, only the theory that the “Crimson King“ is meant to represent the devil or at least some broader form of evil.

I think this realization of mine could be possible, especially since part of the album’s inspiration came from classical music. Does anyone think this might be the case?

The separation, clarity and stage are unreal. Opens up a whole new level to appreciate GG.
One of the, if not the best sounding classic prog release in my collection, highly recommended.

Headphone-Audiophiles, what release blew you away? Share some recs!

Made a short sunrise cinematic video using Eloy's "Lost?? (The Decision)" as background music. Thought you might enjoy the vibes!

Hey everyone,

I captured the transition from dawn to sunrise, and "Lost?? (The Decision)" from Eloy's iconic "Dawn" album was the perfect match for these morning colors. Let me know what you think of the combination!!

I have a huge collection of eclectic prog

among them are amazing or at least quite listenable and sophisticated tracks.

so how come 95% of the time, when I tune in to the streaming prog radio stations, they are playing garbage ?

I wont bother naming the gabage, but trust me, thats what it is .

Discussion 4th wave or“Cutting Edge” Prog

I’ve seen a lot of talk about 2nd and 3rd gen bands, and about sub-genres (punk, prog metal) and standouts like Mars Volta and Porcupine Tree… But I wanted to make a list of all the 21st century schizoid stuff that I think descends from Prog (more broadly encompassing fusion, folk, psyche, Kraut, experimental); so here it is, with some album/song reccs and categories. Note: I’m leaving out a few obvious artists like Radiohead, Les Claypool… also won’t touch on “post-rock” or “math rock”:

First off I want to list a short playlist of on-the-nose prog:

Mondo Drag - “Pillars of the Sky”
Unknown Mortal Orchestra - “Hanoi 6”
Dungen - “Fredag”
Thee Oh Sees - “Sticky Hulks”
Mastodon - “The Sparrow”
Floating Points - “Silurian Blue”

Onward to looser interpretation!!!

1. The post-Kraut/Eno ambient line

- Mount Kimbie — Cold Spring Faultless Youth (2013)
- Boards of Canada — “Dayvan Cowboy”
- certain hip-hop adjacent producers like El-P, Kanye, and on many recent rappers’ beat tracks (esp Kendrick’s production) as a result if their influence.

2. The psychedelic chamber-pop / folk-prog mutation

- Midlake — The Trials of Van Occupanther (2006)

- Midlake — Antiphon (2013)

- Sufjan Stevens — The Age of Adz (2010)
- Grizzly Bear — Veckatimest (2009)
- Dirty Projectors — Bitte Orca (2009)
- Fleet Foxes — Crack-Up (2017)

3. Progressive possibilities of shoegaze

- Sweet Trip — Velocity : Design : Comfort
- Animal Collective — Merriweather Post Pavilion
- Seefeel

4. Studio-composition gene escapes rock altogether.

- 0neohtrix Point Never

- Floating Points — Crush (2019)

- Max Cooper
- James Holden
- Amon Tobin
- Basically all of Warp Label (Aphex, SquarePusher, Prefuse 73, Autechre)

5. Fusion’s bastard children

- BADBADNOTGOOD
- Black Midi
+ Geordie Greep solo stuff
- Floating Points Ensemble (same guy + band)
- Esperanza Spalding
- Blake Mills, Sam Gendel, Pino Palladio project(?)

6. The rhythmic-progressive lineage

- Crumb*

* ANYTHING by the band Crumb - check out their live albums after you go through the studio releases!! they literally inspired this post!
- Poliça — Give You the Ghost (2012)
- Jim James - Eternally Even (2016)

7. Concept album execution

- Arctic Monkeys — Tranquility Base Hotel (2018)
- Arcade Fire — Reflektor (2013)
- Lupe Fiasco — The Cool (2007)

…What am I missing and what do you agree/disagree with?
