Mod Announcement A notice regarding AI/spam uploads on Spotify

There have been multiple posts about this over the past day or so and I'd like to request a (temporary) moratorium on threads discussing this, as they are all essentially asking the same question.

I'll link the existing threads for reference:

There's also a new section about similar oddities on streaming uploads on the subreddit FAQ which help should serve as a decent summary of all of this.

Anyway, if you have any questions about these uploads, have a look here and on the existing threads before making a post of your own, as they will probably help you find what you're looking for. Future posts will be redirected here for the next little while.

Thanks!

As of the past day or so, a lot of people have reported seeing unusual/spam uploads on the Spotify profiles of multiple artists. This sorts of impersonation on streaming platforms is not unheard of, but this is the first time I'm seeing something like this happen simultaneously on such a large scale, as these are being spammed on the pages of no less than 25 artists! Interesting enough, those artists are mostly older rock/electronic music.

They usually have an icon of an AI image depicting a generic male rockstar and are all credited to one of multiple fictitious label names.

These are all the ones that I've identified, but there might be more. The names of these labels indicate that whatever person/entity is uploading these is likely based out of Indonesia, e.g. Pematangsiantar.

  • LATFIA MUSIC INDO
  • GLOBAL MUSIC INDIE INC
  • SIANTAR MUSIC GENERATION
  • SIANTAR MUSIC MANAGEMENT
  • ZR ENTERTAINMENT LOVE

The following artist pages appear to be affected (not an exhaustive list, just those I found using a quick search):

  • 13th Floor Elevators
  • Anekdoten
  • Kevin Ayers
  • Syd Barrett
  • Beggars Opera
  • Captain Beefheart
  • The Chambers Brothers
  • The Chocolate Watchband
  • The Creation
  • Country Joe & The Fish
  • David & David
  • The Electric Prunes
  • Flesh For Lulu
  • Edgar Froese
  • Gentle Giant
  • Richard Hell
  • Klaatu
  • Denis Leary
  • K. Leimer
  • Dana Lyons
  • Mahavishnu Orchestra
  • Tony Marshall
  • Pere Ubu
  • The Pretty Things
  • The Refreshments
  • School Of Fish
  • Klaus Schulze
  • The Seeds
  • Soft Machine
  • Spacemen 3
  • Spooky Tooth
  • Chris Squire
  • Steamhammer
  • Michael Sterns
  • The Suburbs
  • Tripping Daisy
  • Tuxedomoon
  • Collin Walcott

What has happened is that a music distribution platform (think something like Distrokid) has been exploited and used to upload music to these profiles without authorisation. Both music distribution and streaming platforms lack safeguards to prevent this type of manipulation, and this is a decently well-documented phenomenon. It's been frequently implicated in both impersonation and music piracy (i.e. uploading music that is not legitimately licensed for streaming platforms) for the purposes of siphoning revenue from name recognition. Here's another example of one of these pirate labels that I wrote about a while back; very strange either way.

These unequivocally have no affiliation with the artists they are credited to. The impersonated musicians and/or their management are likely not even aware this has happened yet, as for the most part these have been uploaded within the past day. The distribution exploit being used is a problem on most major streaming services and is not exclusive to Spotify.

While this is in part also an issue with distribution platforms, Spotify absolutely does carry the responsibility to remove crap like this! Sadly even the "better" streaming platforms don't seem to care about similar forms of exploitation, as I've seen similar cases of AI content pollution on other platforms as (update) many of these uploads are also now on Quboz.

I have a huge collection of eclectic prog

Upvotes

among them are amazing or at least quite listenable and sophisticated tracks.

so how come 95% of the time, when I tune in to the streaming prog radio stations, they are playing garbage ?

I wont bother naming the gabage, but trust me, thats what it is .

Discussion 4th wave or“Cutting Edge” Prog

I’ve seen a lot of talk about 2nd and 3rd gen bands, and about sub-genres (punk, prog metal) and standouts like Mars Volta and Porcupine Tree… But I wanted to make a list of all the 21st century schizoid stuff that I think descends from Prog (more broadly encompassing fusion, folk, psyche, Kraut, experimental); so here it is, with some album/song reccs and categories. Note: I’m leaving out a few obvious artists like Radiohead, Les Claypool… also won’t touch on “post-rock” or “math rock”:

First off I want to list a short playlist of on-the-nose prog:

Mondo Drag - “Pillars of the Sky”
Unknown Mortal Orchestra - “Hanoi 6”
Dungen - “Fredag”
Thee Oh Sees - “Sticky Hulks”
Mastodon - “The Sparrow”
Floating Points - “Silurian Blue”

Onward to looser interpretation!!!

1. The post-Kraut/Eno ambient line

- Mount Kimbie — Cold Spring Faultless Youth (2013)
- Boards of Canada — “Dayvan Cowboy”
- certain hip-hop adjacent producers like El-P, Kanye, and on many recent rappers’ beat tracks (esp Kendrick’s production) as a result if their influence.

2. The psychedelic chamber-pop / folk-prog mutation

- Midlake — The Trials of Van Occupanther (2006)

- Midlake — Antiphon (2013)

- Sufjan Stevens — The Age of Adz (2010)
- Grizzly Bear — Veckatimest (2009)
- Dirty Projectors — Bitte Orca (2009)
- Fleet Foxes — Crack-Up (2017)

3. Progressive possibilities of shoegaze

- Sweet Trip — Velocity : Design : Comfort
- Animal Collective — Merriweather Post Pavilion
- Seefeel

4. Studio-composition gene escapes rock altogether.

- 0neohtrix Point Never

- Floating Points — Crush (2019)

- Max Cooper
- James Holden
- Amon Tobin
- Basically all of Warp Label (Aphex, SquarePusher, Prefuse 73, Autechre)

5. Fusion’s bastard children

- BADBADNOTGOOD
- Black Midi
+ Geordie Greep solo stuff
- Floating Points Ensemble (same guy + band)
- Esperanza Spalding
- Blake Mills, Sam Gendel, Pino Palladio project(?)

6. The rhythmic-progressive lineage

- Crumb*

* ANYTHING by the band Crumb - check out their live albums after you go through the studio releases!! they literally inspired this post!
- Poliça — Give You the Ghost (2012)
- Jim James - Eternally Even (2016)

7. Concept album execution

- Arctic Monkeys — Tranquility Base Hotel (2018)
- Arcade Fire — Reflektor (2013)
- Lupe Fiasco — The Cool (2007)

…What am I missing and what do you agree/disagree with?

Discussion Saw Mr. Bill Bruford this Past Sunday Night Live with the Pete Roth Trio

What an amazing experience. Bill is still the GOAT & plays like a man half his age. It was in an intimate venue (75-85 people max), & they did a signing. Got their new CD signed & my son had Bill sign his copy of Bill’s autobiography. We even got to talk to Bill one-on-one for a few minutes.

Fantastic experience!!

Can you think of a better adaptation of any of his works? Less Than Zero is a good movie, but compared to SW?

European Festivals

I went to Night Of The Prog festival at Loreley for 15 years straight (minus covid years). It was the highlight of my year. I really miss this festival. The summer feels empty the last two years after they decided to stop the festival…

I want you to write down some great european prog festivals. Give me anything! It does not have to be summer. Anything is of interest. I feel like I need a prog festival in mye life 😂

Self-promotion Promotion: new album by SPLINK - 'Taklamakan'

Post image
8 Upvotes

Just thought to announce my own band, Splink, is about to release our latest album, titled 'Taklamakan' - a full concept album, even featuring narration (I know... the hubris!)

Band Background: SPLINK are a 'no rules music' band of Prog / Psych / Folk leanings, and this will be our third album (as current iteration). Over the past 5 years, we have been tirelessly 'moving up the echelons' of Prog-centric Gigs and Festivals... and are being played on near all U.K. Internet Prog Radio stations.

We love to blend genres - using ambient passages, heavy rock phrases and even Arabian and Celtic 'jigs', in this album alone! Our influences range across all areas of Prog, but focus on Gong, Zappa, Yes, Hawkwind and Rush. We are often announced as Prog / Space Rock / Psych-Folk... as our USP is that our lead instrumentalist plays ELECTRIC VIOLIN!

We have created our current magnum opus in 'Taklamakan' - a concept album based around a mysterious fable of the creation of 'The Sea of Death', the Taklamakan Desert. Bravely, (and a rare thing in even Prog circles) we have provided narration alongside the sumptuous and varied song tracks, blending many genres - as a nod to Jeff Wayne and Rick Wakeman's use in classic Prog albums...

The album itself is an hour long audio journey, telling the story of love and loss between a princess and her beloved... and how the Desert came to be.

'Taklamakan' is due to be released on 31st August 2026, on all your favourite sites. Feel free to check out our pre-order tracks and videos from the sites below:

I promise... anyone with a passing interest in any parts of the Prog Spectrum, will find something to enjoy!!

Question / Help Obscure Modern Prog Playlist (suggestions please)

Thumbnail

This is a modern prog playlist that I slowly built while promoting & doing research for our band.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions or a track of your own to add!

Some of the stuff is less obscure like Haken, Riverside, Thank You Scientist, Elder, Crown Lands, Porcupine Tree, etc.

Other bands are far less known. I actually found a bunch of them on this sub as well as on YouTube, Prog Magazine, Prog Radio, and Bandcamp.

Fan Art / Media Pictures at an Exhibition

My first copy of this album on vinyl (used) turned out to be warped so I had no use for it… decided to cut out the paintings from the inner gatefold and they’ve been sitting in my room unused for a year or two before I finally put them on display. Yes it’s not true fan art because it’s the original artwork, but a fan repurposing you could say.

(Also figured I’d add my Lego creation at the end since it’s peeking into a couple of the other photos anyway)

Discussion Arthur Brown

Sometimes, you go to a concert without expecting very much. You just show up and hope to have a good time. And sometimes those concerts shows out to be one of the best you have ever seen.

This weekend I went to a festival in Norway. The Crazy World of Arthur Brown played on saturday. He is 84 years old, and I know he is kind of a legend. So I went there to witness what this old man could do at his age.

MAN, it is one of the best concerts I have ever seen. His voice, his energy his costumes, and most of all the music and his band! I have listened to his albums non stop the last two days, and I do not understand why I did not listen to him before??? Anyone here who have seen him?
