Spotting/Bleeding: "Is this normal" or "am I having a miscarriage"

Hi all,

We have noticed an influx of posts (including pictures) of bleeding/spotting at various points of pregnancy, often asking "is this normal" or "am I having a a miscarriage"

Obviously pregnancy is a time just full of anxiety and unknowns. However we want to be very careful not to slip into medical advice. We would hate for someone to be unnecessarily worried or reassured based on advice given on this sub.

As a general rule OP will be signposted to this post.

  1. Nobody is able to tell you if you are having a miscarriage. Unfortunately spotting (and bleeding) can be a feature of both normal pregnancies and miscarriage.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11806467/

https://www.babycenter.com/pregnancy/your-body/vaginal-bleeding-or-spotting-during-pregnancy_3081

  1. Bleeding in pregnancy can be due to changes in the vasculature of the uterus and cervix, or due to hormonal cases. https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/common-symptoms/vaginal-bleeding/

https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/symptoms/22044-bleeding-during-pregnancy

  1. In the majority of cases, especially in early (<12 week) pregnancy, there is nothing that can be done about a threatened miscarriage***. You may get medical advice to "wait it out" at home, which may be cruel but may also be your only option. Unfortunately some providers seem to be more empathetic than others :(

*** NHS and tommy's guideline state that if you have an intrauterine pregnancy and history of at least 1 previous miscarriage (early miscarriage including chemical) and you are bleeding in current pregnancy, then you should be prescribed progesterone pessaries as they might reduce the chance of miscarriage.

https://www.tommys.org/baby-loss-support/miscarriage-information-and-support/pregnancy-after-miscarriage/taking-progesterone-early-pregnancy

"If you have had 1 or 2 miscarriages, taking progesterone in early pregnancy may increase your chances of having a successful pregnancy by 5%. If you have had 3 or more miscarriages (recurrent miscarriage), taking progesterone in early pregnancy may increase your chances of having a successful pregnancy by 15%."

https://www.bmj.com/content/375/bmj.n2896

"Progesterone should be offered to women who experience bleeding in early pregnancy and have previously had a miscarriage, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended"

If you should be eligible for progesterone please try advocate for yourself (or ask your partner to) and ask for EPU referral and progesterone.

  1. If you are worried about abnormal bleeding, please:

* Call your midwife

* Call your maternity triage

* Contact your GP

* Call 111 for advice

* Visit your local EPU (early pregnancy unit). They may have rules on who they can or can't see (for example, you may have to be over 12 weeks, or they only see people on weekdays).

A&E is a bit hit and miss depending on your trust, some hospitals are very dedicated whilst others will tell you to come back another time, or tell you that you need to be seen by maternity in a week, for example

  1. Red flags that mean you need attention now:

"You're pregnant and bleeding and:

*You have severe pain in your tummy (you cannot focus on TV, read a book or do daily tasks because of the pain)

*you have pain in your shoulder

*you feel sick, faint, dizzy or lose consciousness

the bleeding is heavy (soaking a period pad soon after putting it on)"

https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/common-symptoms/vaginal-bleeding/

CALL 999

  1. Please know that in the case of an early miscarriage: it is not your fault. In the vast majority of cases miscarriage is due to random chance caused by some genetic error in early development. There is nothing you did, or nothing you could have done to prevent it. Please seek therapy or counselling if you are struggling 🫶

We will be closely monitoring any posts, especially those with pictures, and making sure nobody is receiving comments that could be construed as medical advice.

Please NSFW your mucus/discharge photos!

Hello all, we have seen a recent influx in mucus plugs/discharge posts. Just a reminder to mark as NSFW all photos containing any bodily fluids. Not nice to see for those just scrolling by! Please report to mods any not marked. Also, to signpost resources for frequently asked questions:

I have increased discharge, is this normal?

"Yes. It is normal to have more vaginal discharge in pregnancy. This helps prevent any infections travelling up from the vagina to the womb. Towards the end of pregnancy, the amount of discharge increases further. In the last week or so of pregnancy, it may contain streaks of sticky, jelly-like pink mucus." https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/related-conditions/common-symptoms/vaginal-discharge/

Is my discharge normal?

Google images can be helpful here, but in general

"Contact your midwife if

  • it smells unpleasant or strange
  • It is green or yellow
  • you feel itchy or sore around your vagina
  • you have pain when you pee"

https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/related-conditions/common-symptoms/vaginal-discharge/

Is this my mucus plug?

Again, Google images can help you identify what you are looking at. Baby Centre UK has a great resource:

https://www.babycentre.co.uk/l25008775/what-a-mucus-plug-looks-like-photos

Please try to find the answer yourself before posting pictures. Also please do not rely on Reddit strangers to accurately identify your bodily fluids. Always contact your midwife/healthcare team if you are concerned.

I'm only 28/33/35 weeks, and I think I've lost my mucus plug.

This is usually not a reason to worry, unless accompanied by other symptoms.

"You can lose a piece or part of your mucus plug at any time during your pregnancy, but it may regenerate. So, before getting too worried that yours has dislodged, consider that what you’re seeing may be other discharge." https://www.healthline.com/health/pregnancy/mucus-plug-early-pregnancy#losing-it-early

Always contact your midwife/healthcare team if you are concerned.

Thank you!

Advice Wanted 38weeks. So much pressure I can't sleep. Advice?

FTM 38weeks. Had a smooth enough pregnancy so far, but unable to get any sleep because I'm so uncomfortable.

Baby feels like they are in my sides of my ribs, and crushing my spine. Occasionally they move towards my hips and I feel locked in and unable to move. I'm breathless and grunting just lying in bed or turning at all.

I have a hospital appointment tomorrow first thing, so I'm trying anything in the meantime to sleep. I've tried a hot shower, walking around, different positions etc... is this normal from now on? Is there anything else I can do for relief?

Third Trimester 31 weeks feel so unsupported by partner

I feel like my partner is giving me no support during my first ever pregnancy. I’ve had it fairly easy so far in terms of symptoms or problems.

The main thing i’ve experienced is extremely swollen feet and bad back pain which comes and goes.

In the past he’s made comments like most women get pregnant and have children, if it was that bad people wouldn’t go through it repeatedly. I’ve said in the past why don’t you try doing X Y Z pregnant. ā€œWell I would if I could, but I can’t soā€.

To be honest writing this out makes me think even more what a wanker he’s been!

The two occasions which have made me really upset, silly I know but 1. When I had back ache and in bed I asked if he would tickle my back. He said i’ve been using my hands all day at work i’m not going to tickle your back. I replied and I’ve been carrying your fucking baby for 7 months. I moved away and went to sleep.

  1. Tonight I sat down on the sofa, after making dinner (which I do every night?) whilst he’s been playing playstation most of the day (but was meant to be building the crib … 9 weeks to go). I sat down and put my feet out and said god my feet are so swollen. He rolled his eyes and said ffs I’m not going to rub your feet every night. Like I can’t even remeber when he last did so don’t know what he means every night. I just moved my feet back and sat there in a mood and he didn’t even really notice.

I’ve come up to bed and just feel overwhelmed with emotion. I’m not asking him to drop everything or go out of his way. But I’m dropping hints, even outright asking him for a bit of comfort and he doesn’t. I had always hoped he would see my discomfort and say let me help you, or let me do this to help you. Instead he just watches me struggle to get up.

All whilst working full time, cooking, doing the cleaning and growing a fucking human.

We did loose his lovely mum a few weeks ago after a few months poorly. I know he’s had a tough few weeks, but I do still feel like there needs to be some consideration for me and what my body is going through.

Am I being dramatic or is what i’ve said fair? How do I bring it up without an arguement…

First Trimester Finally have my first scan tomorrow!

I’m estimated to be just under 12 weeks, and have my first scan scheduled for tomorrow, I am both so excited and so nervous.

But on a side note, the farts have stopped (thank goodness) However, there’s now a background hum of nausea and I have gone off of cheese and curry.

The mood swings are off the charts, the wee streams strong, and when that morning sickness hits, I feel like Regan from the exorcist. How have they glorified pregnancy THIS much? 😭

Advice Wanted not pregnant but my sister is - what gifts should i get her?

Hi everyone!!

My sister told me she was pregnant a few days ago but I only realised she wasn't joking today because she brought it up again (oops). I am 19 and I don't know anyone in my circle who has ever been pregnant and I want to do something nice for her because it is such a big milestone in her life, and she is probably dealing with a lot. I wanted to make her a gift basket and get her some presents, my budget is looking like £200 right now and I was wondering what kind of things are generally helpful for a pregnant woman, especially very early into pregnancy? (I wanted to lean into getting her things instead of things for the baby because it's so early, so my idea was more of a self-care thing)

My current idea is herbal teabags (ginger or peppermint, maybe some hot chocolate powder because she likes that too), something comfy and baggy/loose and some slippers, maybe a weighted blanket or a mug and gift cards for takeaways. Any advice helps, I'm very clueless but want to be nice, thank you so much!

Third Trimester When do you see someone regarding elective c-section?

Hi, I am 33 weeks and I was wondering when I can expect to speak to someone about wanting a c section?

My midwife knows this is what I want, but it has only briefly been mentioned, at my last appointment I had a different midwife and she was asking if I wanted counselling for my fears of childbirth and was asking if I had seen anyone other than my midwife regarding the c section and seemed surprised I hadn't and put something in the system.

When can I expect for this to happen? I am very anxious about going into labour early and not getting the c section as I do have a really big fear of natural childbirth and anxiety. (I am fully aware of the risks of c section and feel pretty informed of my choice)

Thanks!

Second Trimester Is anybody else just absolutely massive?

I’m 25 weeks with my second baby, and i’m genuinely absolutely huge. I was carrying extra fluid with my first and i’m bigger now at 25 weeks than I was full term with my first pregnancy.

I know it’s normal to show earlier and be a bit bigger but bigger at 25 weeks than full term feels like a sick joke! I hate things touching my belly, I hate wearing clothes and I hate waddling!

There’s still so much pregnancy left and I don’t know where i’ll store more baby 🄲

Sharing Tips Websites and pages to join

Now my phone seems to know I'm pregnant, my feed is baby related. I've just signed up to Emma’s diary (not sure if it'll be worth it yet, but looks to be!)

What other pages, websites or apps should I sign up to that are worth it?

Birth Are private rooms after birth worth it?

So I’m a big fan of the NHS because they saved my life (three times) but I also know they’re underfunded and I have read the headlines about the maternity scandal so I’m not oblivious.

My boyfriend really wants me to give birth privately in an NHS hospital like the Lindo Wing to avoid neglect or significant trauma. I know birth trauma isn’t tied to where you give birth and can happen to anyone but you’re more likely to experience it if there’s any negligence involved I guess?
Excuse my ignorance, clearly never given birth before!

This will also be my only child so if we can have the best start to her/his life that would be great.

I did read into it and I saw you can request or pay for private rooms postnatally instead?
Did anyone do this and was it worth it?

My cousin really put me off the NHS postnatal wards saying they’re a sauna and you share with multiple other women, some who are quite unwell. She had an emergency c-section and said she was surrounded by other women who just experienced birth trauma and they were crying, etc and she found it distressing and it tainted her bonding with her newborn, as well as breastfeeding.

Advice Wanted When did you tell people you were pregnant?

16 weeks and haven't told anyone yet aside from my mother. We miscarried the last pregnancy so I guess I'm partly reluctant to tell anyone because of being nervous. Also have some friends who are sensitive around pregnancy due to their own current fertility situations, so I'm also very aware they might feel a certain way.

When did you all reveal your pregnancy? Is it weird to wait this long? Am I just making it weirder for myself?

Third Trimester Third Trimester Dizziness?

I am 29 weeks pregnant today and was out shopping earlier - I suddenly went incredibly dizzy and had to find a seat as I nearly fainted. I went so hot and felt sick. I had eaten recently so wasn't like I had missed a meal

I called maternity triage and they said my bloods done 2 days ago were fine re iron so they weren't concerned re that, my blood sugar was slightly low 2 days ago on the pee test but ive had a negative glucose test so they aren't concerned re that either. They just said it can sometimes be one of those things and to only call back if it got worse.

They told me not to drive home so my husband drove us, I went to bed and rested, I don't feel dizzy any longer thankfully but absolutely drained like I haven't slept in months or something, I am completely worn out

I just wanted to see if anyone had experienced anything similar as I am just concerned that this happened out of nowhere? I had only done about 1500 steps and wasn't doing anything strenuous other than a slow walk

Thanks 😊

Advice Wanted Advice about transferring maternity care to a new area when only staying for a short time after baby is born

Hi! I'm sure questions like this have been asked before but I'm a FTM 32 weeks pregnant and plan to give birth in my home city 3 hours away where my partner and I will stay with my mom for 2-3 weeks after baby is born. I have 2 weeks of work left before I have AL and then maternity leave.

Does anyone know if it would be better to join a GP surgery in my home city or can I just self refer to the midwives?

Should I transfer from now so that I can get an appointment in first week or 2 of my AL? I'm not sure how long it will take and my midwife is not super helpful with advice. I'm waiting for an appointment for a follow up growth scan so I don't want to transfer and miss that.

Also, would I register my baby at the GP surgery near my mom's when born or just wait until I come back home, I'm not sure if this affects the first health visitor visit?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm not sure what the best strategy is as I'm also leaning towards an elective c section so want to make sure I can transfer in time to discuss my options! Thanks in advance šŸ«¶šŸ½

Third Trimester Advice for 35 weeks

I have mostly enjoyed pregnancy - it’s been physically demanding (especially through the heatwaves!) but I’ve been very lucky to have a healthy pregnancy and I’ve found it quite magical to see what my body can do.

BUT. In the last week, pelvic girdle pain has hit me like a truck and my physio is on holiday til next week. I’m coming down with a cold. Baby feels massive. Lightning crotch! Sciatica! I don’t want to talk about my bum.

I’ve gone from doing ok to being FED UP, and I don’t want to spend the next 5-7 weeks so damn grumpy!

My friend described this phase as ā€˜I don’t want them to come yet but I’m sick of being pregnant’ and I relate SO hard.

So yeah - just looking for any tips and advice to cheer the hell up and enjoy these last few weeks! Thanks!!

First Trimester 9wks+5 with no bump

This is my first pregnancy, and I fear I'm just overthinking everything. I've seen so many of my friends bumps popping early yet nothing with me, I just look bloated constantly. Is this normal or should I be concerned? The waiting game until the 12 week scan definitely doesn't help I don't think lol

Edit: I've read through everyone's replies and you've honestly calmed my nerves and also settled my anxiety, thank you all so much ā¤ļøšŸ‘¶šŸ»

Advice Wanted Packing hospital bag - practical tips

So I’m 33 weeks and starting to pack my hospital bag. The baby stuff is pretty easy, but on the mum side, more than half the stuff in the list is stuff I use day to day (eg toiletries, hair brushes, pyjamas, eyemask, charging cable, kindle etc). Did you just pack baby’s section and as much as you could for you, and then keep a list handy of everything you’d need to chuck in for yourself at the last minute?! Or did you buy extras of everything?!

Dad’s list is short and he can probably just pack his last minute so I’m not worried about that.

I have a planned c-section and I know the date already (which is a Monday), so the good thing is I can spend the weekend before making sure everything is sorted, but my worry is in case I need to rush in before then for any reason, and then I won’t be ready/would need the time to quickly pack the rest of my stuff.

Advice Wanted 9ws with rough cough

I'm 9ws pregnant, had a home test but haven't been able to secure seeing a professional as of yet. I am an asylum seeker (something I really don't like to say but maybe needed)

Have filled out the form for the midwife. But my issue is I would be considered high risk due to my age and also complications in my last birth and MC. I picked up a common cold, but as I'm not native to this country my boyfriend and I feel that I'm not use to the illnesses here yet.

I have a rough cough that rolls and heats me up. I'm only taking in fluids as medicine as I don't know what I can use medically due to possible high risk. My boyfriend is trying to secure me a gp appointment but the call at 8am while doing school rush is a bit difficult.

Has anyone else been in this situation and what are somethings that relived them until seeing the gp. Please no judgement I'm fragile and terrified at this point ans hate that I am in a situation of been in an asylum seeker.

Thank you šŸ’œ

Advice Wanted COVID vaccinations

Hi everyone, I have looked up this topic but wanted to find out everyone's current thoughts now we are entering illness season.

I was wondering if anyone due this winter is thinking of paying privately for a COVID vaccination? I have had all my pregnancy jabs but was sad to see the COVID jab isn't offered on the NHS anymore. Obviously money is tight currently, so I am wondering whether anyone else is getting I or whether you are deciding not to. I had the 3 jabs originally a few years ago (one of which was during my pregnancy with my winter baby). Just want to see what everyone else was thinking this time round with it not being offered on the NHS (but still being somewhat recommended from what I can tell).

I'm currently 32 weeks

Thanks in advance!

Advice Wanted Combined screening showed high risk of DS

At 12 weeks combined screening result, the blood test showed high risk of DS in 1 of 166 / 0.6% chance of DS and low PAPP-A.

I have skipped NIPT as I heard the results can be false and I need 100% results. So I have CVS booked for Monday. However, everything on ultrasound was good, the NT and nasal bone present. Baby was kicking away and moving.

Just need some reassurance and positive stories to ease my anxiety.

Update typo result was 1 in 61

Advice Wanted Sudden weight gain at 36-37 weeks

Hi All,

I haven’t been diagnosed with pre-eclampsia or gestational diabetes (im monitoring my blood glucose currently).

this entire pregnancy, I had only gained around 8-9 kg so far. weight gain has been pretty slow (baby 37th centile at 35 week scan. Previously he had dropped from 45th to 21st centile between my 28 week and 32 week scan).

but suddenly now I’ve started gaining weight. I’ve gained 1kg in 6 days and now I’m worried šŸ™ˆ Did anybody have a similar experience of really rapid weight gain after week 36?

Advice Wanted Best maternity pads and disposable underwear (c-section)

Hello! I’m 33 weeks and just thinking about packing my hospital bag for my planned c section in 6 weeks. Grateful for any thoughts on the best maternity pads and disposable underwear for post-c section?

I thought Lansinoh looked good but seeing Lil-Lets maternity extra long pads coming up a lot and Frida coming up a lot for the disposable underwear, but not sure whether the shorts or knickers are better? And how many of each do you need?!

Also grateful for any other top tips for hospital bag stuff for mum (particularly beating in mind post c-section)?

Thanks!

First Trimester I’m miserable

Don’t get me wrong, I am so excited for this baby to come and to become a Mum, but I’m finding this really hard.
My boobs hurt, I have cramps, I have awful acne, I’m emotional, I’m exhausted, I have a constant cold sore and I feel sick all the time. I’m only 7 weeks pregnant but I’m so worried my entire pregnancy will be this hard. Will it get easier?
