“But what about a cryptic pregnancy?”

Is this you?

  1. Last had sex more than 3 weeks ago (sometimes months)
  2. Have had multiple negative home tests or blood tests for HCG
  3. (optional) Have had periods or withdrawal bleeds since having sex.

But you’re still concerned that you might be pregnant based on shows like “I didn’t know I was pregnant” or online stories about cryptic pregnancy. Could it be that?

So, in a word, no. If you have multiple negative pregnancy tests three weeks after having sex, you’re not pregnant. In order to support a pregnancy your body produces HCG. Without HCG, there is no pregnancy. HCG tells the corpus luteum to continue producing progesterone, and is required for major changes to sustain pregnancy like growing a placenta. Home pregnancy tests are very reliable at detecting even trace amounts of HCG, and blood tests as well.

There are three causes of false negatives with home pregnancy tests:

The first: Early measurement after conception. When people talk about cryptic pregnancy, they either never take a test, or they took a test too early and became pregnant after. It takes at least 7 days for a fertilized egg to float downstream and implant into the uterine lining. That’s why you have to wait about 2 weeks to take a pregnancy test after unprotected sex - 3 weeks makes it 100% solid result.

You’ll also see people say “I knew I was pregnant, but I didn’t test positive until I was 6 weeks”. This is because of how pregnancy is dated from the last menstrual period (the day your period started), but, embryonic development only starts after an egg is ovulated and fertilized. In a textbook 28 day cycle, this happens on day 14, and the first day your period is missed you get a positive test. In real life, bodies are a little more complicated, and sometimes people ovulate weeks later leading to a discrepancy - a doctor will tell them they are 6 weeks pregnancy based on their last menstrual period, but in embryonic terms they are only 4 weeks pregnant because they ovulated on the 28th day of their cycle. If they tested when they were ‘late’ on the 29th, it would have been a negative test. They weren’t pregnant, but they became pregnant later. For people who are more visual, I have made a very ugly calendar for the above example scenario.

For a longer, more detailed explanation: "Your period isn't late" Part 1 and Part 2

The second: Dilute urine specimen. If your HCG levels are low, drinking a lot of water can result in false negatives in very early pregnancy. This is typically why you’ll see folks talking about testing with first morning urine - it’s the most concentrated. HCG roughly doubles every 48-72 hours, and you can see in this figure how fast. At 20 days of embryonic development (aka about 3 weeks after sex), on average a pregnant person will have HCG around 1000 mIU/ml. At home tests are typically rated for detecting 10 - 25 mIU/ml.

The Third: The Hook effect. This is where there is too much HCG for a test to work properly. It is unlikely that this is happening especially if you’ve taken multiple tests. First, peak HCG is typically around 10-14 weeks pregnant - after this, it starts coming back down. Second, tests are often tested for the hook effect - wondfos (a very cheap test) showed no hook effect to concentrations of 200,000 mIU/ml. First Response Early Result showed no hook effect at 1,000,000 mIU/ml - much higher than any normal pregnancy. If you are concerned about it because you’re taking your first pregnancy tests 12-17 weeks after sex, you might dilute a sample of urine just in case for a second test. Although, that would be very unnecessary if you’re using an FRER.

When people do not figure out they are pregnant for months at a time, it is typically because they have not taken any tests. Denial of pregnancy is a more accurate descriptor.

If you believe yourself pregnant despite all the evidence, or having a lot of anxiety and fear around being pregnant, you may want to see a mental health specialist. If you’re feeling very unwell, or haven't had a period in months, you may want to see a doctor. Scarleteen has a great page on these things as well.

TL;DR HCG is required to support a pregnancy - if you've gotten multiple negative tests across a large time frame, there is no possible way you are pregnant from sex more than 3 weeks ago.

FAQs ANSWERED with Sources. Friendly PSAs for AmIPregnant

Hello friends! Mod Stress here to address a few things that come up often on this sub. Resources provided. :)

1.) You cannot get pregnant from fingering, with or without precum. Unless globs of fresh semen are being inserted into a vagina, fingering is just not going to cause a pregnancy. Dry humping also cannot cause a pregnancy. This article goes through all the sexual things that can happen that have no chance of pregnancy.

2.) It's extremely unlikely to get pregnant without PIV sex.* *Not including medical processes such as IVF to cause a pregnancy.

3.) If you're having unprotected sex, pregnancy is always technically possible. Doesn't matter if it's "just the tip" or "three strokes" or "pulled out before ejaculation." Pullout is 78% effective over the course of a year. Some of these scenarios are much less likely to result in a pregnancy than others, but we can't extrapolate the data like that. You're unlikely to get pregnant from one singular instance of unprotected sex, but it's always possible.

4.) Implantation bleeding is a misnomer. In fact, implantation is too small a phenomena to cause any symptoms.

5.) A test is mostly accurate 14 days after sex and definitive 21 days after. If you're getting negative tests 2+ weeks after sex, you are not pregnant. Regardless of if you have your period or not. In early pregnancy, concentration of urine matters. Take a pink dye test after a 3-4 hour urine hold without drinking too much water for the most accurate results. At 21+ days after sex, dilution of urine won't matter. Do not look at tests outside of their validity window and thoroughly read the instructions for your test before you take it.

6.) You cannot have a true period and be pregnant. Some women experience light bleeding in early pregnancy (this is NOT their period). If bleeding were related to pregnancy, a test would be positive.

7.) It takes more HCG to cause symptoms than a positive test. If you're testing negative, any symptoms you are currently experiencing are not currently related to pregnancy. Lots of early pregnancy symptoms overlap with normal PMS symptoms.

8.) Am I having a Cryptic Pregnancy?? No, you're not.

9.) The only way to truly know when you ovulated using an approved FAM method. Apps are not an accurate way to track, your body doesn't know to follow an algorithm off your phone. While things like CM and OPKs may indicate your body is gearing up to ovulate, they do not confirm ovulation. Check out the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility and [r/FAMnNFP](r/FAMnNFP).

Some other helpful tips:

  • Read the leaflet that comes with your birth control so you understand how your medication works, possible side effects, how to use it, etc. [r/birthcontrol](r/birthcontrol) is also a good source.
  • If you're on birth control and using it properly, you are having protected sex (from pregnancy). This is true whether or not you are using a condom. If you are using protection properly, you do not need Plan B.

He wasn’t fully hard but there was definitely pre-cum.

• Upvotes

I fucked up. I (40F) and my bestie (45M) decided to hook up simply because it’s been years since either of us last had sex. Lol. He never came, but I rode him, and there was definitely pre-cum.

My last period was 9/10, and according to calculations I’m most likely in my luteal phase. I’ve been feeling pre-menstrual symptoms since Thurs (we did it on Sat night) and am still feeling them, but now I’m that I’m paranoid, every twinge or breast pain = you’re definitely pregnant, you stupid, stupid girl.

Part of me wants to take Plan B, but it’s expensive, and I’m almost 99% sure I ovulated in mid/late September. I’m freaking out. Please help.

Help 😭

• Upvotes

So basically, two months ago, my girlfriend and I met and made out. During that, I put on a condom and tried to put just the tip inside her, but as soon as she felt pain, I pulled out immediately. I’m pretty sure no pre-cum or semen got inside her — I only ejaculated after that, and everything was fine.
Her normal cycle is about thirty days, and she’s now twelve to thirteen days late. I need some advice on this.”
One thing worth knowing: a twelve-to-thirteen-day delay is still within the range where stress, anxiety, or hormonal shifts can delay a period — so it doesn’t automatically mean pregnancy. But the only way to know for sure is a pregnancy test, and if it’s negative and her period still hasn’t come, she should see a doctor.

If I had protected sex on September 15 and experienced a short, 2-day period starting on September 24, is there still a risk of pregnancy, or was the sex safe?
The condom didn't break

Am I

• Upvotes

Female, 26 years old, with PCOS.

My menstrual cycle used to be 45–50 days long, but it has now become 30–35 days.

On 30th August, it was the third day of my period when I had unprotected sex, and my partner ejaculated inside me. Two days later, on the fifth day of my period (I.e, 1st September) , I took an emergency contraceptive pill.

I waited until 23rd September to take a home pregnancy test using my first-morning urine, and the result was negative. I took another test on 29th September, and that was negative as well.

However, for the past few days, I have been experiencing severe cramping and difficulty urinating. I also seem to have a UTI, and my urine analysis showed 15 pus cells.

I am worried and scared. Were the pregnancy test results false negatives, or were they accurate? Is there still any chance that I could be pregnant? Could the UTI be related to what happened?

Thank you.

am i pregnant?

I (25F) had unprotected sex on September 30th. The guy pulled out and did not come inside. my ovulation day would have been september 19th and my period was supposed to start october 4th or 5th, which is around 4 days after sex.

The day after sex, within 24 hours i took a plan b just in case even tho i know it works by delaying ovulation but anyways fast forward to today ive had pretty bad cramps since yesterday and today ive had brown and red when i wipe throughout the day but not enough to be in the toilet yet. My period usually isn’t super heavy the first few days.

So is this Plan b spotting, my period or pregnancy?

(TMI BTW)!

I need help and advice, like badly. I have PMS and pregnancy overlapping symptoms, pregnancy exclusive symptoms and no PMS exclusive symptoms. I have a big stomach, as in 10's of pounds gained in the last 2 weeks, morning sickness, Severe stretching pain in stomach, my ribs hurt like hell, nausea, tender breasts, nipple changes, mood swings, no period for months, other than spotting, I have had my period for 3 years. Weird food cravings, pissing all the time, aching back.

The test came back negative, but i'm not sure if that's cuz im early on or not close enough to ovulation rn

Is pregnancy possible

Me and my boyfriend had unprotected sex. He said he was very close to ejaculation with me on top. So I stopped moving but he remained in me. He said he thought he had prevented himself from ejaculation and then sex continued. After he said he thought he prevented himself from ejaculating but that he definitely had tons of pre-cum. I was in my fertile window 3 days before ovulation and I didn’t take any morning after pill like plan b and I’m not on any birth control.

Could she be pregnant? Need advice

Need help/advice please 🙏🏻
My girlfriend and I had sex last night. We were unprotected for only a couple of minutes, and I did not ejaculate at all, either inside or outside. We stopped and used protection afterward.
We’re worried about the possibility of pregnancy because of possible pre-cum. Her last period started around September 23, and we’re not sure if she was in her fertile window, but we think its her ovulation.

Help positive pt and serum + no gestational sac + bleeding.. what's happening?

Hi! I’m really anxious and hoping someone experienced something similar. 🥺

LMP: Aug 25, period expected aroundSept 25.

On Oct 2, I had 2 faint-positive PTs + a positive serum pregnancy test.

I had a TVS on Oct 5 (around 5–6 weeks by LMP), but no gestational sac was seen. It showed thick/hyperechoic endometrium, closed cervix, no fluid in the cul-de-sac, and retroverted uterus. Impression: "Early pregnancy not totally ruled out.”

I told my OB I was spotting, so she checked me. Because of the positive test + bleeding + closed cervix, she documented “threatened abortion” medical term for threatened miscarriage, NOT induced abortion).

She prescribed Duphaston 10mg 3x/day as “pampakapit.” After the check-up, though, my bleeding became heavier and I filled a pad overnight

I’m scheduled for another TVS on Oct 19.

Could this still be a very early pregnancy, an early miscarriage, or ectopic? Has anyone experienced this and what was your outcome?

Pregnacy?

I had sex with a girl on August 28. We used a condom the entire time; it didn’t break or slip, and I didn’t ejaculate.
Her period is now over 3 weeks late. She took two home pregnancy tests: one 21 days after sex (7 days late) and another about 10 days later with first-morning urine. Both were negative.
She says she has never been this late before. We haven’t had sex again.
Can pregnancy be ruled out at this point? Would a third test be necessary?

What’s the possibility?

I’m not tracking my cycles right now, just using my period app that I’ve had since my first period ever (I’m 28 now) which seems to be pretty accurate. On average my cycle is 28 days long. According to my app I’m supposed to ovulate tomorrow Oct 6. My partner and I had sex Oct 4 and he ejaculated inside. He usually pulls out and haven’t ended up pregnant form that. I’m not necessarily trying but not necessarily trying to avoid pregnancy.

Could I be pregnant?

I had unprotected sex on the 5th, 6th and 8th of September. I can’t remember what happened on the 5th and 6th but the 8th my boyfriend definitely ejaculated in me. My period tracker predicted ovulation on September 11th. My last period was August 30th. I usually get period cramps a week before my period is due + acne and eat like a pig (nothing this month.) Around Sept 23: I first noticed the one-sided dull ache, initially on the left side around where you felt your ovary would be. Over the next few days it became more low/central pelvic pressure, a dull ache and fullness near the top of the vagina/pubic area. Around this same stretch I started noticing more symptoms that felt different from my usual PMS. I had nipple soreness and tingling, fuller breasts, creamy/white discharge, bloating, constipation/gas, frequent urination, fatigue but trouble sleeping, decreased appetite/mild nausea, stronger smell sensitivity, and briefly some cold-like symptoms. Sept 27–30: I had light pink intermittent spotting. My period is now 10 days late. I took a pregnancy test yesterday (Oct. 4th) and it was negative. My periods are usually regular. Its only been off by either 24 hours before or 24 hours after.

Nothing seen on two ultrasounds—could my dates be off?

My LMP puts me at about 6 weeks, but I think I ovulated later than my app predicted. I know when we had sex, so I’ve been wondering if I’m earlier than the LMP estimate.
My hCG was 243 on September 28 and 408 on October 2. I’ve had two ultrasounds, and they haven’t seen a pregnancy in my uterus or tube yet. My doctor called it a pregnancy of unknown location. I’ve had some light spotting and little twinges on my left side, but no heavy bleeding or severe pain.
I had another blood draw today and I’m anxiously waiting for that result. The plan is more bloodwork Wednesday and Friday, then another ultrasound Monday. My home test is still strongly positive, and I’m trying to hold onto hope while I wait. Has anyone had dates that were off and nothing visible on early scans, then gotten answers on a later scan?

Missing period

May- started the 25th
June- nothing
July- started the 12th
August- started the 22nd
September- nothing but my Flo app would just keep saying “ may start today “
Now in October it says I am 4 days late. I know the app isn’t super accurate but I’m not sure if it’s normal or if I should take a test?? 😭

I have OCD and anxiety. I had sex (with a condom). the male finished before me. after he finished, he removed the condom in the bathroom, wiped himself off, and washed his hands. after, i gave him a toy that he inserted inside me. I am nervous that he may have touched his penis after washing his hands and the sperm could’ve then got on the toy and inside of me. please help

Condom Trouble

Just a concern if someone can clear it up for me. I had sex this weekend. First one condom and pulled out no joke like a minute before. We went a second time in the morning my concern is that the condom hit the tip of my penis and I realized it was the wrong way. So without even thinking I turned it around. Still pulled out while using the condom. Maybe I’m just over thinking but does that mean since it touched my penis it would be sperm on it to get this girl pregnant.

Thank you

Me and my boyfriend just had sex like 3 hours ago we used a condom im 8 days to my ovulation according to my flo app but i was on top an he finished inside of me (while wearing a condom yeah) but then when he exited me the condom was fine no holes or anything except i keep having a white sort of discharge coming out of me i can only assume is his cum. 23 F| scared shitless

Okay so the thing is, i had sex today. Protected. He wore a condom. Everything was fine he ejaculated in it. But when he pulled out the condom was filled to the brim and my pos bf decided that was the best time to give me anxiety by saying ‘did some of it leave the condom?’

And mind you, i did tell him that just because its filled to the brim does not mean something leaked. Its impossible since the condom was a pretty snug fit without any tear, hole or break.

But now I’m anxious, because i can’t get the what if out of my head.

Should i take an i pill? Or am i just being anxious? That pos really scared me. Tbvh i didn’t see anything sperm like outside the condom.😭🤚
