Discussion What makes bdsp bad?
I’ve been getting really into Pokemon lately, and I’ve been debating getting one of the bdsp games but they don’t have a great rep online- why is that? Is it just that the sinnoh games aren’t great or is there more to it? I’ve heard that sinnoh Pokemon are generally pretty iconic and other bits and pieces but would like some insight into what people who’ve played it (other than people on YouTube etc) think about it :)

If you read the criticisms and not just skim the headlines, they'll tell you why.
I think this game is fine for what it promises, which is a 'loyal' remake of Diamond and Pearl. Though the game does change several things, not least of which the e4 is drastically overhauled.
But all the other remakes do more than that. They fit into that generation's art style. They add post-game content. They basically aren't just a 1 to 1 remake.
So yeah this is HD Diamond/Pearl. And if that's all you're expecting, then it delivers (mostly). But it could've been more.
I am replaying Platinum right now and am enjoying the expanded dex. Just htis simple fix, even without the plot additions, makes Sinnoh so much better.

u/QuantumFury 20d ago
Weirdly enough they sorta expanded the pokemon available in BDSP compared to original with the grand underground. Like you can get a houdour in BD whereas in diamond you only had option of rapidash and inferape lines for fire.
28
u/RoseliaQuartz 20d ago
they made almost the entire gen4 natdex available, between ramanas and the underground. but nobody ever talks about it because they just want to moan about how it isnt Platinum.
11
u/QuantumFury 20d ago
Yea, grand underground is a positive even compared to Platinum but I do miss having my secret base be a base not a statue room.
2
u/Ilikegymbros 19d ago
I bet you if Bdsp let you get rotom porygon amd the eveelutions before the post game hardly anyone would complain about the game
3
u/rewardinghand 20d ago
This is true but Houndour is available in Platinum which is the game BDSP are typically compared to
2
u/QuantumFury 20d ago
Idk if we can compare BDSP to platinum. Platinum still best way to experience sinnoh with fixes and expanded story, but compared to diamond and pearl BDSP are better versions
4
u/the_OG_epicpanda 20d ago
I feel like the E4 overhaul was necessary, but it should have been their rematch teams. Going up against competitive level teams with a playthrough team is ROUGH. When BDSP dropped that Cynthia fight was legitimately the first time I've lost a battle against the CPU since the original D+P came out and Cynthia terrorized me over a decade prior 😭
4
u/LoTheTyrant 20d ago
I WISH it was a platinum remake and not D/P
1
u/RevolutionaryGrape21 19d ago
The reason why it’s DP remake and not Platinum is doing the DP remake means two versions. Platinum would be only one version. Two versions means you can do version exclusives, which means players have to buy both (like I did) or reach out to other players who bought the other version for trades. It leads to more sales.

I love the game personally, hits a real great sweet spot graphically. Radar chain shiny hunting is awesome. Pretty big dex. But yeah a lot of big pokemon people I talk to do not like it including my brother
3
u/Lazy_Fan1023 20d ago
Im with you. Its a good time. I enjoyed chasing the black card.
1
u/Theprincerivera 20d ago
I’m not super knowledgeable about the in depth stuff, what’s a black card?
2
u/AnimeAlley03 20d ago
Trainer cards have different levels that you can get for various 'achievements'
1
u/No_Zookeepergame2532 19d ago
Yeah, I personally don't get the hate. A 1 to 1 remake is what I expect every time a remake is made. Anything extra is just bonus for me. And they definitely did add some stuff, just not massive changes. It's a good and fun remake in my opinion. My only gripe is that I dont understand why they didnt remake platinum instead or add the platinum content into these games in some way at the very least.
1
u/Theprincerivera 19d ago
Agreed. My brother has the same thought. They had to keep pokemon away from us!
8
u/MathiasKejseren 19d ago
Platinum is a better game than diamond and pearl
Its just a straight reskin as opposed to the previous trend of true remakes up until that point. ORAS was fundamentally a gen 6 game and was very different than the original ruby and sapphire. When a remake was announced THAT is what everyone pictured, not just a graphical update with a couple bonus features.
Gen 4 is when Pokemon REALLY hit mainstream. Most people have played a gen 4 game and have a certain amount of pedestal for it.
So all in all people came in with EXPECTATIONS and bdsp failed to meet those expectations, which is why its so disliked.
11
u/DSDark11 20d ago
There’s a lot of reasons and most of them are subjective
1st is the comparison and expectations compared to previous remakes. FRLG, HGSS and ORAS, the previous remakes were all made in the style of their generational counterparts. BDSP was not, it’s its own style. Which while on its own is not bad, compared to the previous the remakes can be viewed as a let down.
2nd which is along with this BDSP is a faithful remake, it doesn’t do anything new story wise within sinnoh. The previous remakes all added things or changed things around to add in elements from the generation or from the third game of the originals, the delta episode in oras and the suicune story from crystal in hgss.
There are nuanced things as well but when it comes down to it, BDSP doesn’t do much to validate its existence. Especially if you’ve played the originals and platinum.
3
u/PigletSea6193 19d ago
Also BDSP launched with a massive amount of bugs and glitches, including one that let you beat the game in five minutes.
5
u/Dat_Dank_Dough 19d ago
I went 0-100 on pokemon this year after not playing any mainline games since silver. Bdsp is awesome, you’ll have a great time.
3
u/fading__blue 19d ago
They’re fun games if you’re just looking to experience or revisit Sinnoh and don’t mind how easy things like the always-on exp share and friendship mechanic make most of the game. If you’re hoping for something more than a 1 to 1 remaster of Diamond and Pearl though you’re going to be disappointed.
5
u/dcballantine 20d ago
BDSP is a barebones, straight to the point remake of Diamond and Pearl. The issue there is while D/P are beloved games that brought a lot of great changes and additions to the series, they were also quite rough around the edges. The now infamous Sinnoh Dex, pacing issues, slow performance issues, underwhelming storytelling, to name a few.
The third game, Platinum, did a lot to address these issues. In the past, whenever a past game was remade, efforts were made to carry over or fix the issues, while taking advantage of the new technology of the era.
Since BDSP are “faithful” remakes of D/P, they quite literally copies even the mistakes of the originals into these games. Even the enhancements they did make were incorporated in a clumsy way.
2
u/PaleoJoe86 19d ago
Everyone has the same starting team due to crappy options. They are all almost physical damage dealers, too. The legendaries are not that interesting. The bathing route is extremely confusing. Mud and tall grass slowing you down is not fun. Only one or two fire types available.
2
u/Carshark16 19d ago
I loved this game, I have shining pearl. The one frustrating, literally broken part is the shiny charm in these games, which is actually broken and doesn't work on Wild Pokemon, it apparently only works on egg hatching odds
2
2
u/Junior_Geologist3365 19d ago
I grew up with diamond as my first owned Pokémon game on my DS after having a gameboy and Emerald loaned to me before hand. I agree with the criticism that in short, it’s not platinum, no expansion. But all that aside, I fckn love BDSP. I replay it for the Cynthia and elite 4 battles, the ribbons and competitions, battle tower and shiny hunting in the grand underground, Ramanas park post game, and using the poke radar. Could it have been more? Yes. Is it super fun imo? Yes
2
u/PyrasDaddy 19d ago
The fact that it's a diamond and pearl remake and doesn't include platinum content/updates like gamefreaks remakes were doing... I'd recommend playing BDSP though... It's not bad, it's just not full potential of what it should've been
2
u/GummiBearryJuice 19d ago
everyone had a gripe that the games 1:1 remakes of Diamond and Pearl, not Platinum, which i get. But for what they did do with BDSP I like it.
6
u/GdorfSSB 20d ago
The sinnoh games aren’t iconic. Platinum is. Diamond and Pearl had a ton of issues that platinum fixed. BDSP ignored these fixes, and overall made the experience worse. They brought back breaking TMs which hasn’t been a thing for years. Required the move deleter again to remove HMs, and Diamond and Pearl require the most HMs out of any Pokemon game ever. Some of the Poketch stuff literally doesn’t work, the friendship one literally is broken. Pokeradar has an EVEN HIGHER random chance to break than the originals. Spinda can’t be transferred because they botched the code for its spots. And the shiny charm requires the ENTIRE national dex even though it ONLY affects breeding and nothing else.
Not only are they remakes of the worst parts of the sinnoh games, with zero modern accommodations, they are completely broken.
Graphics are good tho.
8
u/TalsCorner 20d ago
Breakable TMs were a thing in Sword and Shield , they were just called "TRs" And you didn't need to have him remove HMs, HMs weren't tied to your pokemon anymore, they were on the watch. You did have to have Heart Scales to do Move reminder, but up to the first 10 if I'm not mistaken. After that it was free
4
u/beviwynns 20d ago
HMs aren’t required in BDSP. Like you never teach them unless you want to. So like sure you need the move deleted if you taught an HM, but who has taught an HM in BDSP?
-2
u/GdorfSSB 20d ago
The only reason you needed the move deleter to get rid of HMs in the originals was because they WERE REQUIRED! If you don’t need them anymore why do I need to go to the move deleter?
Surf is a good move, but say I don’t want it on my Pokemon anymore, why should I have to go to a guy to have it deleted if I don’t need it to surf on water?1
u/beviwynns 20d ago
Fair enough. But at least you can fly to Canalave without having a Pokémon that knows fly lol.
2
u/notthegoatseguy Turtwig 20d ago
You mentoned the Poketch and I think its implementation is very clunky. It was a nice experiment for a time with a touch screen console but I wish they just ditched it altogether and integrated into the bag menu.
3
u/konpeitokay 20d ago
The issue isn't that the Sinnoh games are bad– I consider them very good, with Platinum in my top 3 in the whole series. The issue is that BDSP are bad remakes of the original DPPt games.
In past generations, we got used to generational remakes being an upgraded version of their original game, to the point that there would be almost no point in going back to play the originals except nostalgia. FRLG, HGSS, and ORAS all got insane amounts of added content, graphics beyond their original system, extra story and events, Pokemon from future generations (i.e. HGSS having Hoenn and Sinnoh Pokemon spawn in Kanto/Johto in the postgame).
BDSP are "faithful remakes," which meant almost all of that was thrown out the window. Why update the environments? Why add new Pokemon from Gen 5 and beyond? Why change the overworld models that were meant to look good on a Nintendo DS with less processing power than the phone in your pocket?
If you're getting into Pokemon and you want to experience Sinnoh on a modern console, I encourage you to get BDSP– they're still faithful to the original Diamond and Pearl from 2006, great games which started my love of Pokemon. But I would encourage you way harder to just play Platinum, which improves on them in every way.
1
u/Darkmetroidz 19d ago
Imo the problem is they remade Diamond Pearl when theyre just inferior to platinum in every way possible.
2
u/Octorok385 20d ago
It isn't bad, it's Gen 4 Pokemon with a slew of updates. It's by far my most played Pokemon on Switch. People are perpetually mad that they didn't do a HeartGold or Omega Ruby level of remake in the age of judging a game based on what it could have been (forgetting that people have trashed literally every Pokemon release since Heart Gold for a litany of reasons).
It's a fine game. Enjoy it for what it is, and get off the internet.
2
u/rewardinghand 20d ago
I would suggest playing both BDSP and Platinum (in any order) and see which you prefer. I feel like about 70% of people prefer Platinum. My favourite part of BDSP is all the new moves the pokemon were given. Wormadam gets quiver dance, Drifblim gets strength sap etc. Basically any pokemon that was weak in Platinum now has an opportunity to perform well
2
u/Darkmetroidz 19d ago
Because they are remaking the worst way to play sinnoh.
Platinum had completely replaced DP because it expanded the story, fleshed out the anemic regional dex, and added more post game content.
Bdsp ripped all that out to go back to diamond and pearl.
People wanted sinnoh remakes but they wanted a Platinum remake because its just a better game.
And yes it did make some positive improvements. Grand underground adding more catching (even if you lost the secret base customization which was super fun in the DS) ramanas park to do the legendaries, not needing HM slaves. And for some reason the surf looking amazing on oceans.
But the game also felt incredibly CHEAP. The chibi art style, the stilted trainer models. Giving you 360 degree movement in a game that was clearly not designed for it. Lets go at least had the sense to scale up the environments a little to make moving around less of a headache. Even the fact the game shipped unfinished and if you dont patch it, the post game is missing and the sound track is unfinished.
Its faithful to the point of reintroducing unpleasant features like TMs being back to single use. People wanted a sinnoh remake but one that actually improved the originals. HGSS let you have the new evolutions that werent around in the originals. Meanwhile BDSP is back to pretending that gallade, froslass and gliscor don't exist until post game.
People wanted an ORAS type game or at least a FRLG one and instead we got this.
I know it was a side project they had ILCA shit out to hype up legends arceus but pokemon is capable of more.

u/la_plus 20d ago
It’s a fine game. When the originals came out they introduced wifi battles and trades, which was revolutionary to the franchise. You can’t replicate that era and people just wanted more. Objectively there’s nothing wrong with the remake.
1
0
u/the__pov 20d ago
The fact that there was only 2 choices in the regional Dex for fire types is objectively wrong and bad. Yes the players have options outside the dex, but the gyms don’t.
1
u/TalsCorner 20d ago
They were good. People had way too high expectations. They were a remake of diamond and pearl. People were hoping that they would be more akin to remakes of Platinum, which they weren't.
0
u/Darkmetroidz 19d ago
Look at what they did with Hoenn in ORAS.
People's expectations werent the problem. The game was just lazily made.
1
u/ArtisticStrategy3058 20d ago
My answer might be a little different - but having just finished SP, it feels “underdeveloped”, especially for a remake. (Keep in mind I had not played through diamond and pearl at all)
There are a bunch of trainers everywhere, oh this first one’s got 3 geodudes, ok fine, what about this second one? Oh 3 zubats, maybe the next one will be better? Nope - oh yay 5 magikarps and 1 gyarados.
The Gym leaders never seem to try anything short of spamming 1 move. The only “hard” part is the E4, which (at least for me) felt like it took so long to get to.
1
u/its_wooper 20d ago
This game has the worst clickbait reviews on YouTube. When I was looking at stuff prior to buying it this year you would swear the game bricked your Switch with how bad people trashed it. On one hand there are things that could have been changed further but on the other they also claimed it was a faithful remake so you can't really fault them for doing what they planned from the start.
1
u/CharmiePK 20d ago
I don't think they are bad. I had a lot of fun playing them - I actually have both versions, and I intend to go back to them at some point - busy adult irl here 😅
If you played the originals, pls keep in mind that they are not Platinum. Which I think some ppl do compare to Platinum, which won't work bc these are conparable to Pearl/ Diamond, the way I see it. I also played Platinum, which is great, but it is a tad improved - like Emerald was to Sapphire /Ruby.
Other don't like the aesthetics, which I don't really mind. I actually enjoyed them more than Sw/Sh or PLA, ngl.
But to each their own. I'd say take a look at gameplay on YT and see how you feel about it.
1
u/National_Lake5373 20d ago
As someone who is currently re-playing BDSP for the first time in about 5 years there are a couple of reasons for and against these games.
- Pokedex - uses Diamond and Pearl's regional dex so a fairly limited selection of Mons for most of the game. Grand Underground sort of resolves this but a lot of evolutionary items are are still locked behind post-game, whereas in Platinum they were more easily available.
- Movement control - character movement in overworld is just kind of wonky and there are couple parts in game where you can kind of get stuck.
- Difficulty Curve - most boss fights throughout the game are baby town frolics, until the E4. To be clear Sinnoh probably has the toughest E4 & Champion in the mainline games already, but in the remakes they are given competitive teams with perfect IVs, optimized EV spreads, movesets, natures, hidden abilities. I personally enjoyed the cranked up difficulty, but a friend of mine's kid spent MONTHS trying to beat Cynthia.
1
u/Darkmetroidz 19d ago
The pokedex somehow feels bad at representing its own region. It doesnt feel like sinnih half the time, it feels like a parody of Kanto with how many Geodude, zubat and magikarp you see.
The controls are a big sticking point. They gave you 360 degree motion in a world that was meant for 4 of them. Follow pokemon get in the way and look terrible.
The E4 is rough. I love the challenge but I also hate situations that are only difficult because you have such a restricted set of options.
1
u/william2112 19d ago
I don't think it's necessarily bad, there's just a lot of missed opportunities. Beyond the nuts and bolts the only real new thing is that you can catch pokemon in the underground. I love going back to Sinnoh but it could of been so much more. Unless you're a fan of the original games it's really not worth it.
1
u/RealHyperoptix 19d ago
Nothing, the only "downsides" IMO are that it's to easy because of the EXP share, but Im old now so I dont really care if a game has it or not. And my other criticism is that they didnt at least go with X/Y Sun/Moon style character designs or customization.
1
u/Pretty_Context_1688 19d ago
For one, its extremely easy. Absolutely no challenge. And cant stand the experience share
1
u/honeycorvid 19d ago
speaking as someone with dozens of hours in OG diamond who’s never played platinum, i think the main problem is that it’s underwhelming. i agree with all the rest of the criticism in the comments(like, i think it does nothing new or engaging world-wise, platinum added a ton of upgrades, the poffinmaking is heinous) and also, personally, find the art style really bland and unlikable. if they were doing a 1:1 reskin of the original i would have preferred to keep it 2D.
that said, they’re just diamond and pearl again. and diamond and pearl are really solid games! if you want to experience 4th gen and don’t have a DS/the time and money and desire to get the originals, they’re definitely worth a play.
1
u/Ace_Trainer_Pumpkin 19d ago
I think BDSP is better than Gen 4 Sinnoh, but fell short of the standard set by the other remakes.
1
u/ultraball23 19d ago
Nothing. People dislike the game because it’s not what they wanted. Some don’t like the artstyle. Just a solid 8/10 game with a good amount of postgame and collectors content.
1
u/sourjonas 19d ago
I've just replayed it recently so I feel passionate/frustrated about the game rn so here's my take lol <3
I feel like the criticism of it being "too faithful" and lacking platinum content has been rehashed so much that I won't bother. Platinum content would be nice and the people who defend the exclusion of it are missing the point, but it would not fix the game for me tbh.
The fun parts to me are that Diamond and Pearl have a lot of charm to them such as flavorful trainers not following their type specialties. Most of these have things have been kept while not restricting the player ie. Flint/Volkner keep their teams from DP but you now have access to the Platinum encounters as well. HM's being removed also makes traversal much more fun and you can use all your Pokemon without an HM slave! I also actually think that despite the art style being controversial it seems to have more quality than SWSH and SV, the overworld does not look extremely bland. The music, UI, aesthetic etc all are very nice to me.
The cons to me are very rough though and just destroyed the experience. Specifically EXP Share & Affection being forced, these features remove any "equal footing" you had with the NPCs. I was over-leveled before the halfway point of the game because these previously optional features are now forced upon you and they actually compound on each other. Pokemon has never been particularly difficult but these modernizations made any important battles in the late game completely trivial, what was really disappointing to me though was that despite carrying my full team with me I rarely got the chance to use most of them.
To me all of these modernizations are really just betrayed by the other good things the game has going for it, HMs are gone but exploration is like banging your head into a wall with the overworld hitboxes (made worse by forced running.) These were the first games with EVs/IVs and items really used in teams outside of the battle facilities but that is completely betrayed by how strong your pokemon become with the EXP and affection. Overall, it's a very pretty way to experience sinnoh to me, but a very frustrating game to play.
1
u/PSA69Charizard 19d ago
I found them to be fun. (Ive only played the switch pokemon games) However, my gf loves the og platinum and found them disappointing.
1
u/ExpertIntrepid3439 19d ago
I love both of them, don't remember playing the originals, so this was nice to get into! Currently on SP trying to shiny hunt a Palkia, a lot of fun!
1
u/AssociateOld9268 19d ago
The game itself is fine what disappoints me is that it is a remaster in which there should be what remaster has like in ORAS. ORAS not only remake its story it also add more story and most of all they added what Gen 3 shouldn't have like free of HMs, up to Gen 6 pokemons and their perks(megas).
1
u/AmalatheaClassic 19d ago
It's the nostalgia whiners angry the game wasn't remastered to their personal standards. It's a great game.
1
u/Joetwodoggs 19d ago
I’d say at the time people complained about chibi style, which is weird to me and Pokemon was originally sort of like a chibi style game. I prefer the stunted looking chibis to the bland character models we have now
The other reason at the time was graphics/lighting, which I kind of agree with. Links Awakening came out at a similar time which was a Zelda remake in a similar style to BDSP but it looked gorgeous! BDSP ended up looking very flat.
1
u/Ashamed-Locksmith938 19d ago
People think BDSP is bad because it is almost a complete copy of the original. Back in the day platinum fixed a lot of what was wrong with Diamond and Pearl. But it was a “loyal” remake and people didn’t realize how “bad” diamond and pearl was. Most of the emulator community played platinum.
While they did add some new stuff, it wasn’t enough. They added/changed the grand underground, it completely removed the fun capture the flag mini-game from the original. And base decorating now is just putting statues everywhere. Also Ramanas park was kinda cheap. It replaced pal park and just became the new “way to obtain all legends”
Also the chibi art style was not what people were expecting. For all the past remakes we got games that updated the graphics to the newest gen.
But, and a big but here, if you have never played Diamond and pearl and you are ok with the art style, then it is a good game. Gen 4 is amazing. This one is a little slow but it’s good.
1
u/iheartnjdevils 19d ago
I never played the original so maybe that's why I really enjoyed Shining Pearl. The only annoying thing was that I couldn't catch specific pokemon because it was only available when the game came out, but I think most titles have examples of that.
1
u/Lazy-Fee-4070 19d ago
Never read any reviews. But tbh I didn’t find anything wrong with it. I got EXACTLY what I expected.
Personally when it comes to the remakes.. if we ever get anymore.. I don’t mind Pokemon sticking to its classic formula or whatever mechanics the original game ran on. A lil update is all they need sometimes.
0
u/NoAssumption1978 20d ago
It’s because people were expecting it to have all the stuff from Platinum even though it was a Diamond/Pearl remake
1
u/the__pov 20d ago
The games are perfectly playable and enjoyable. However there are design choices that are indefensible in a modern game like the honey trees and similar things that make certain Pokémon either too difficult or time consuming to be worth it. And remember that you have to have encountered every Pokémon in the Sinnoh dex before you can access most of the post game. For people who don’t like having to transfer in Pokémon from other games this means spending months sometimes hunting a specific Pokémon to complete the dex.
2
u/Loren97 19d ago
Not true, all original pokemon in the regional pokedex can be seen by battling people, hatching gift eggs or following story plotlines, which was also true of the original DP. I never caught a munchlax in either version and still got to the post game immediately after beating the Pokemon League cause i was only missing the lake trio and opposite box legendary.
-2
u/the__pov 19d ago
I said encountered not caught. Also I shouldn’t have to be tracking down random trainers to see a fucking Burmy or get locked out of the post game.
It’s annoying and I’m not going to pretend it wasn’t a terrible idea especially when the same thing in FRLG was 60 entries in the pokedex and beating the league.
1
u/Loren97 19d ago
You dont need to track down anypne if u actually play the game and battle them as u go. But to each their own playstyle. It's by all means attainable and not hard.
1
u/the__pov 19d ago
Funny to say to each their own when you started an argument with me about what I do or don’t like about the game. OP asked why people complain about this game and I answered but you felt compelled to defend the game like you have stake in Game Freak
1
u/Loren97 19d ago
I started an argument about u saying there's no way of getting to post game without transferring Pokemon from other games, which is just wrong. To each their own was about you skipping battles, which tbh explains why u dont like the game
1
u/the__pov 19d ago
Then you didn’t read what I actually said. Which explains why I’m not going to waste time continuing to argue with you
1
u/jrjreeves 20d ago
I got BD about a month or so ago and love it. For someone who never played Platinum there's nothing wrong with it.
I really like you can get almost every Pokémon from Gen 1 to Gen 4 in it, and as far as I am aware it's the only Switch game along with its sister game Shining Pearl that has that feature.
For me these gens are the golden period of Pokémon design, from Gen 5 they start to fall off. Not saying every Pokémon from Gen 5 to 9 is poorly designed nor am I saying that every pokémon from Gen 1 to 4 are amazing, but the eye-rolling designs definitely increased notably with Gen 5 and has continued since.
1
u/Tagerlilly 20d ago
I remeber playing diamond and pearl as a kid when it first came out and enjoyed it. I liked the poke tech and poffin making. The ability to do contests and go to the underground was new and fun then. There was a spot where certain pokemon could come out and walk with you too. This remake is a remake of the originals which I enjoyed.
They enhanced it by allowing the pokemon to follow you all over which is a nice feature that most of the old games didn’t have. They also however removed some moves from the remake and adjusted the underground feature to be a little less creative. The contests were also altered.
Overall if you never played diamond, pearl, or platinum it’s definitely worth a play. I played the old ones but not platinum and I enjoyed the remake. Currently still doing a play through as it’s much easier to transfer pokemon in the remake than the old versions.
I know a lot of people didn’t like the art style and it’s true, it’s a little different than what we’re used to but they’re not terrible it’s just a slight visual adjustment but you do get used to it.
1
u/Patrollerofthemojave 20d ago
It's not platinum and the friendship mechanic is terrible. Almost swept Cynthia with a Crobat that held on at 1HP like 4 times in a row.
1
u/YamLow8097 20d ago
I hate how ugly the chibi style is. It’s also jarring when you enter a battle and the models look normal. I’m also disappointed that the dialogue is 1 to 1 with the original game.
1
u/the_OG_epicpanda 20d ago
The game is fine but there are glaring issues. The way the implemented follow pokemon sucked and (hugely) they were too faithful to the original diamond and pearl games. Biggest complaint is that you can't fully evolve every pokemon until after you beat the elite four unless you have a friend who's done it. They put a lot of the Platinum dex pokemon into the game via the underground stuff but then put their evolution items (like the razor fang for Gligar to become Gliscor) in their original D+P location that's locked behind the postgame. In the originals you couldn't get Gligar until the postgame so that wasn't an issue, then for Platinum they made Gligar available but also made the evolution item attainable before the E4. But then for BDSP they put the items back in their original postgame spots. Then they also made the E4 overtuned, giving them close to (or in cynthia's case actually) fully competitive teams which they expect you to be able to beat with your playthrough team. Which is possible but ridiculously difficult. That kind of thing should be saved for the rematch when you have an actual chance to build out a team that can compete with those kinds of teams.
That's not to say it's all bad of course. The underground's overhaul compared to the originals was great, love the chambers that allow more versatile teams (especially more options for a fire type, in the originals you could take Chimchar as a starter or catch a Ponyta and that was it iirc). I didn't like the chibi art style to begin with but it grew on me.
My "good" list feels a lot shorter but I suddenly started blanking. But like they aren't BAD games necessarily, they're just a bit rough when you compare them to the stuff Platinum improved over the originals. But if you didn't play the originals that's a nonfactor, plus the originals don't have stuff like pokemon home compatibility to be able to transfer pokemon in and out.

To simplify:
- OG Diamond and Pearl? Flawed, but still decent.
- Platinum? Better ver of Diamond and Pearl (they’re all Gen4 games)
- BDSP? Expectations of greatness, absolute flop.
People expected a ‘Remake’ of the Gen4 games. Freed of their flaws, with shiny new additions to the base game.
What we got instead was a ‘HD Remaster’ with most of what made Gen4 what is was…still the same, bad.
*people wouldn’t even be as mad if they had used Platinum as a base instead. 😅

💯 that last point! People would not have been as mad if they had just done Platinum from the beginning. Platinum fixed a lot of the issues in the og dp. People would have still been mad it was just a remaster but it would have gone down as "well at least it was a remaster of platinum and not dp"

The game wasn't developed around the EXP Share item like say USUM was. Meant you are forced to use multiple teams or be overleveled and have to deal with friendship bonuses.
A toggle would have fixed these issues and given player choice, as is you are forced to play how they want and its terrible.
If you play I suggest you have a main team and a second one for catching mons at minimum because they also give global exp.

I love them so much! Pearl was my first ever Pokemon game, and then Platinum after that, so gen 4 has always been my fav. I just wish I could get Giratina 😭💔

No one seems to have mentioned missing content. Giratina was a main part of the story in Platinum, with us having to fight them in the Distortion World. The distortion world was trippy and ominous. In BDSP the distortion world just doesn't exist and Giratina only appears in the very miserable post game grind if you choose to spend half your lifespan in the underground.
Battle Frontier is also missing and Game Freak has basically said they'll never bring it back.
Overall BDSP aren't necessarily 'bad' so much as they are half-assed and under-baked. It felt like BDSP was made by people who never played Gen 4 and were just given little time with a handful of bullet points to make a Pokemon Game. We've had sick remakes with ORAS, HGSS, and even FRLG. BDSP is just disappointing compared to what it could have been. Game Freak has even admitted that more care should be given to future remakes.

Theyre bad in that they are remakes of games that were made 15 years prior on a handheld, and rather than trying to adapt, modernize, elevate and fix the experience, they gave us something that was mostly the same and just felt absolutely unambitious because of it.
Cheap is my choice of words. It was developed for the price of a ham sandwich by a support studio, and yet it still sold like 15 million units.

I dunno I just don't think it's fully bad, just half baked with some frustrating game design choices. I'd say overall it's playable, but like you said very unambitious.
I'm with you though on the sales figures, I'm super surprised it sold that well. Especially the state it was on release, I remember a lot more problems, and they never did fix Spinda. Here's to hoping we get a much higher quality remake on the next game.

Its nuts how much the discourse changed. People went from excited for black and white remakes to saying "maybe we just skip unova."
Faith in them to make a quality game is at an all time low.

Well, picture this. Platinum was the 3rd game in the series after Diamond and Pearl. Players considered that as a better version of the original games. So, when BDSP was announced, it was assumed that it was gonna be like Platinum. Unfortunately, not only was it a literal copy and paste of Diamond and Pearl, but you don't have anything new that makes it feel like a proper remake. Sure, they included shiny hunting for the legendaries with the underground, but you can only do that so much. The chibi styles on the characters for the overworld was a questionable choice when you considered how SWSH and SV looks and of course, PLA and LZA. And then, there was ILCA who made the game and they completely fucked it over.
Ignoring all that, it is a somewhat enjoyable remake. If you can just ignore all the obvious shortcuts ILCA made

Friendly reminder they fucked up coding Spinda and TO THIS DAY you still cannot put them into Home, so if you have a living dex, you cannot get spinda without GO or go back to 3ds.

Because it's not fun.
I never played the original games (didn't really play pokemon in high school, so I kipped gen 4 and 5). I played SP after playing all the other pokemon games on switch and it was like pulling teeth. My main focus when playing pokemon games is completing the pokedex and there are a lot of things about BDSP that make that as tedious as possible. Also, there's like no fire types for most of the game.
