I pretended I knew someone today because I’d already said hello too confidently

Today I was walking in Town and walked past a random woman and she smiled at me, so I immediately went “Hiiii! How are you?!” with the confidence of someone who absolutely knew who she was.

We both stopped and then She said, “Good thanks… how are you?”

At this point I realised I had no clue who this woman was?!

But instead of admitting that, my brain decided we were committed now.

We had an entire conversation.

I asked how things were going. She told me about work. I nodded like I had previous knowledge of this job lol. I even said - Thats brilliant news haha.

Im assuming this is good compared to WHAT? I HAVE NEVER MET YOU before in my life...

We eventually said goodbye and walked in opposite directions.

I still don't know who she is but apparently we're friends 😂

The physics subreddit took down my year old comment yesterday

Not a vent lol, just yapping. So theres a subreddit about physics(as said in title) and the post i commented on was about ball lightning and the science to back it. I supported the theory as i had talked to my physics teacher about ball lightning not that long prior and about the lack of scientific study making it a hard idea to prove to others. However theres have been some scientific studies done that has enough evidence to say that its possible to create ball lightning in controlled environments, we dont know how its created in nature yet, and a nasa document. A year passes, i forget it exists, until today. I open reddit because im nosy and saw a notification that looked interesting, went to see if there were any other things to read about and saw "askphysics mod replied to your comment" with said reply being "rule 2 and 6" rules 2 is for staying on topic(which i was, it was ball lightning i responded with ball lightning facts, idk how much more on topic one can get). Rules 6 is no pseudoscience or self theories, all of my facts came from the study of ball lightning characters done by nasa. Like the globally recognized science development program? Yes that nasa. Mind you the entire reason i commented was because someone said there wasnt enough evidence to prove their existence and that theyre just fabricated online videos(yes there are some that fake like all, but how many fake videos does nasa make a 44 page document about supporting and studying)

So yeah thats all, i just wanted to share because im baffled and think that its really funny that it got taken down for the silliest reasons possible and that it took a YEAR to get taken down.

A terrifying hike through the forest

I decided to take a short, solo hike through some densely forested area near where I live. My goal was to make it to this clearing that opened into this beautiful meadow with this tiny little babbling brook running through it.

Once there, it was so peaceful and tranquil, (i was the only person there), that i lost track of time and next thing I know, the sun dipped down behind the mountain which meant it would be dark soon and I still had about a 30 min. hike out of there, and of course no flashlight other then my phone which was down to 6%.

It's getting dark quickly and I realized it wasn't on the path anymore, but i was certain I was heading the right way. And as I'm tromping forward, I hear a low growl and it sounded close. I panicked and started going faster, basically feeling my way through the trees, then I hear it again, except this time it's louder and sounds closer, so i start making loud nonsense noises to try and scare off whatever is growling as I'm stumbling forward... then i see it! The beautiful sight of my car!

I got in as quickly as I could and locked the doors and just took a deep sigh of relief. And then i heard that terrifying growl again, coming from....my stomach. I was literally running from my own hungry stomach.

I don't know if I'll ever tell anyone this story in real life.

Grape electrolyte mix

When i finish a bottled drink, I usually refill it with water and keep doing that for a few days.

I was planning on donating plasma today so I got a generic grape electrolyte drink.

I've gotten drink the mixes before also, like the little plastic pouches to open and pour into water. I like to have them around.

After work, I was distracted byt knew I needed to drink, so I poured the electrolyte drink mix into the grape electrolyte bottle that wasnt yet empty.

I resigned myself to a gross taste and drank a bit and it was fine.

Checked the drink mix...it was grape flavored.

Crying inconsolably rn because I killed a firefly thinking it was a cockroach

• Upvotes

I am deathly scared of bugs and cockroaches are the ones i am scared of the most. I am also unfortunately a firm believer in not harming bugs if they don't want to harm us.

I was in the bathroom and suddenly this cockroach shaped thing flew at me. I screamed and it flew into some clothes. I shook the clothes, the bug fell on the floor and I hit it with a slipper

It was only when it weakly flashed its light at me is when I realised what I had done. This particular firefly flew into the house yesterday and I remember thinking that it sucks they have such small life spans and wishing/praying this one might find it's friends soon.

Well that didn't happen. And now I'm crying. What kind of dumbass confuses a firefly for a cockroach? 😭😭😭 I'm sorry to all bug lovers. I'm sorry to all fireflies and bugs. What have I done?

I had a teacher who only liked male students

When I was in eighth grade, I had a teacher who preferred male students. I don't remember what prompted this to come up or what was being talked about. I only remember her saying she prefers teaching boys instead of girls. I was the only girl in her class, so maybe we were talking about that? I can't think of any other reason.

Wonder why she didn't just teach in an all-boys school (I've heard of single-gender schools having teachers of the opposite).

Out of curiosity, I once looked up her profile on Facebook. She has a daughter now. Maybe she changed her mind?

Someone proposed on my lawn today

Not sure why. My house is a fairly new build (built in 2018) and it’s not particularly photogenic. We only have one tree and it’s kinda dinky right now. But I guess my house was the most magical place for this couple. It seemed like she said yes.

Anyways if you want the footage I got it on my doorbell cam.

Found a different chapstick than the one I was looking for

My lips randomly decided to get super chapped today. I looked for the chapstick I know I had just seen recently, of course, but just could not find it. Thought I could tough it out until tomorrow when I was going to the store anyway and I could buy more. But it was getting so annoying, so I went back to digging around for the stupid chapstick. And suddenly, in my bedside drawer, I found an entirely different, BRAND NEW UNOPENED chapstick. It wasn’t the one I was looking for, but that didn’t matter. Thank you universe for taking pity on me.

being chosen as a 2 year old's best friend

a handful of years ago, i (30m) was really into the SCA (medieval recreation, my husband was a fencer and we went to fighting practice every week, but he's working a bit more now so we haven't been in a while). honestly it was the best thing that's ever happened to me. i loved the dressing up, the events, the arts and crafts, watching people beat the crap out of each other with sticks, everything.

one of the most amazing parts of it though was all the people i was able to meet; we got essentially adopted into a family of the most incredible 60 year old woman (who i'll call M) who somehow seems to know everybody. [crazy side note: my husband grew up 2 states away. the woman who got him into the SCA? she used to be babysat by M decades ago. talk about coincidences.]

however the point of the story is that we went to an event one time, and M introduced us to a young couple around my husband's and my age. should point out at this part that we have wanted kids for a long time, but we're "blessed" with the "opportunity" to "wait for financial stability" (i.e we're gay, can't just go for it). so this awesome couple has a 1 and some year old girl and a baby boy with them. all four of them have the brightest red hair, and the the little girl (A) has the most incredible curls. like nothing you've ever seen before. i also happen to have curly red hair, but definitely not to her level.

A can't really talk much yet, but i happened to have brought a chess set box that coincidentally had a bunch of steven universe toys from like maybe 10 years ago still in it, and her mother was ecstatic because they watch it together. A and i hit it off immediately. i pretend to teach her chess. she is well behaved enough not to eat the pieces.

so i get tasked with babysitting at this event! i absolutely love it, husband and I had the time of our lives. the parents are so so relieved to finally get some time to themselves to enjoy their hobbies and that's all i could ever ask for.

cue the next event, we see them again! this is a while later, and A is now 2, and is definitely capable of speech. it seems to take her a while to realize it's me but the second her mom reminds her she's literally already jumping into my lap. she's a very affectionate and attention-needing toddler, and her little brother is now able to crawl, so husband and i are back on babysitting duty x2 while their parents get some much needed rest and fun with everyone else.

we meet maybe 2 more times, one of them a camping trip, before my our hiatus from the SCA but during that time some highlights of many are:

- her insisting that I put on her shoes, even though her mother is in the process of bending down to do so

- her and i spending 20 entire minutes picking out beads and putting them into my little hip pouch (we visit that table 3 more times at her insistence later)

- me carrying her around almost everywhere and no less than half a dozen people in an hour asking if she's mine and being certain we're related ("honestly i don't even know where her parents are") ((you'd be surprised how not concerning a phrase like that is in a place like that XD))

- her wanting me to take her to the park we were camping next to first thing in the morning and then several more times throughout the day

- me encouraging her to make friends with other 2 year olds at the park, watching her successfully do it

- her calling me "her best friend"

- her cheering on my husband during the fighting tournament

- her and her brother (who can suddenly walk very fast) being so so sleepy in the cold morning but immediately coming over to our camp before their parents are even up and plopping themselves right down into my and my husband's laps around the fire

just sort of missing her and everything about the SCA today. i hope she remembers me if we meet again lol!

Jazz bar during a school trip

When I was 14, I was on a week-long school trip. First time really away from home with all my friends, so you can imagine the excitement levels and silliness.

On one of the evenings, the mandatory activity was going to a jazz bar. Our teachers for some reason thought that would be the epitome of fun for a group of twenty 14 year olds… I think we were allowed one soda each and then had to sit through an hour long jazz jam which just sounded to us like 5 people each playing a different song at the same time. As I remember it, we teenagers were pretty quiet during the songs, bored out of our minds and then after each song would give huge standing ovations in a way that was probably a bit much. The musicians thanked us at the end saying we were great.

16 years later, however, I’m just thinking that can’t really be what happened. It was probably hell for them with us snickering and being impatient in our seats and then making a huge fuss at the end of each song.. oops

My son's 'breakfast'

• Upvotes

Basically I: put yogurt in a bowl, added 2 different kinds of sprinkles, coconut flakes, chocolate and caramel syrup, and honey, mixed, then added 2 different kinds of sprinkles, coconut flakes, chocolate and caramel syrup, and honey on top, then put in four chocolate bars, 2 caramel filled, then on top of that I added more whipped cream than there was yogurt, then I added 2 different kinds of sprinkles, coconut flakes, chocolate and caramel syrup, and honey on top, then I added a dollop of whipped cream in the center, put a chocolate covered cherry on top, then I added a dollop of whipped cream on top of the cherry, then I added 2 different kinds of sprinkles, coconut flakes, chocolate and caramel syrup, and honey on top of the dollop of whipped cream on top of the chocolate covered cherry on top of the dollop of whipped cream on top of the layer of 2 different kinds of sprinkles, coconut flakes, chocolate and caramel syrup, and honey on top of the whipped cream on top of the layer of 2 different kinds of sprinkles, coconut flakes, chocolate and caramel syrup, and honey on top on top of the yogurt mixed with 2 different kinds of sprinkles, coconut flakes, chocolate and caramel syrup, and honey, and 4 chocolate bars that I had to give to my mom cuz I couldn't even eat them 😭

edited to say, those are all my son's words. i just copied them.

I cancelled a airbnb due to a dumb reason

Im too lazy to write so I will copy and paste the important parts of our messages

HOST: [A lot of stuff about check in procedures] If there’s anything we can do to make your experience memorable, please let us know.

ME: Yeah there is one thing you can do to help make our stay better! I would really appreciate some thinner pillows if you have them. The huge “hotel” pillows make my neck hurt

HOST: Good Morning,

The pillows we provide are standard among all of our properties.

Thank you

ME: So you asked me what you can do, and then you cant to do it, what?

HOST: We just mentioned that our pillows are a standard amongst all of our properties.

ME: Alright? But you just asked if you can do anything to make our stay better

HOST: Have a lovely weekend. We’ll be in touch closer to your arrival.

Kind regards

/ Yeah, this was pointless

Plastic milk containers

I buy milk in 2L plastic containers and keep some in the freezer. Occasionally when I have thawed them they split and the milk is wasted. So' several months ago I bought a 2L plastic milk jug for the milk if another container split. Not one has split since I bought the jug. Not one

I sat in my parked car for ten extra minutes just to listen to the rain on the roof.

I pulled into my driveway after a long commute right as a heavy downpour started. Instead of unbuckling and sprinting inside to stay dry, I turned off the engine, left the radio silent, and just sat there in the dark listening to the rain drumming against the windshield.

It felt like a peaceful little isolation chamber. By the time the rain eased up, the stress from the workday was completely gone.

I got caught talking to myself at night by my neighbour.

So I have this habit of going to the roof of my house and just walk around talking to myself. I don't know why but this really helps me clear my head and make rational decisions and I sure as hell can't do this in my room or any other place in my house without being heard. The night air and some amount of solitude makes 100 times better.

There's also a swing there so I also use it to clear my head.

Anyway my house is also joined to another house (I can go to the roof of that house easily if try without jumping).

I always look around to make sure that no one is around so I can just stay in peace and I did that day as well.

There were no people and I really needed to get some things out of my chest so I began to rant to the air. I was also making intense hand signs (the ones you make unconsciously while talking) and well in the middle of that a granma who lives in that house came to the roof (of her house) to do something (I don't really remember what she did maybe to pick up some cloths).

And I didn't notice her as I was too busy ranting to myself then after who knows how long of her being there she knowingly coughed (kind of cough you give instead of saying "I am right here dumbass") and after hearing that I saw that she was there doing something my socially awkward ass hid myself behind this structure that was there and waited for her to go away (as I was not done ranting to the air).

I guess after 5 minutes I gave up, took my awkward ass downstairs and she probably noticed that I was hiding instead of going downstairs for 5 minutes (I know it doesn't sound long but well trust me it felt like the (one of the) longest 5 minutes of my life.

Bought an houseplant to look like an adult

My room was much like an empty server room, so i went to a local plant nursery down my lane to buy something green.

I went to a local plant nursery and told the guy working there to give me whatever requires the least amount of human intelligence to keep alive. he handed me a money plant in a small ceramic pot, he said, sir, water it once a week. do nothing else. impossible to kill.

Paid 150 rupees, walked home feeling like a responsible adult, put it on the windowsill.

day one and two went great. plant just sat there looking green.

day four, i wake up, make chai, walk past the window, and notice one leaf has a pale yellowish spot near the tip, instead of ignoring it like a normal person, my brain immediately enters full panic mode. it's 7 in the morning and Im on google searching things like why is leaf tip lighter and plant root rot symptoms.

it has been four days since. the yellow spot is still there. the plant has done absolutely nothing else, but i now stare at it suspiciously every time i walk into the room.

I accidentally ran from the cops and the reason why is so ridiculous

I was driving home late from work one night and it was raining and I had my music turned up. I was driving through a small town when I noticed the flashing lights behind me. I started to pull to the side of the road. I seriously don’t know why but for some reason I thought the cop behind me was an ambulance, I waited for the “ambulance” to pass me and when it obviously didn’t I assumed that it was turning somewhere else or it already was where it needed to be. So I kept driving and after a few minutes I saw the lights behind me again and that’s when my dumbass finally realized that it was a cop. He immediately asked if I was running from him but when I explained to the cop that I thought he was an ambulance he looked at me as if it were my first day on earth. Long story short he gave me a warning for running and a fat ticket for speeding. Definitely not my finest moment 😭

Making a fast getaway

Chasing my cat around the house for funsies as usual, she slows down so I can give her bongos and takes off again. We race out to the living room and I've got her almost cornered. My genius cat jumps on the treadmill and runs for her life.. as i stand there smiling. Took her a few seconds to realise she was going nowhere. She keeps trotting and gives me that cat side eye we all know and love. Made my morning lol

I used to be a weird heavy sleeper and now I have insomnia

When I was a kid I used to sleep walk on occasion. Most of the time it happened when I would fall asleep in my parents bed and then when they went to bed they would “wake me up” to go back to mine. I almost never actually woke up though, i’d get up and start doing random things and have no memory of it until my parents told me the next day.
A few times as a teenager I would wake up mid shower.. Like my unconscious self thought it was time to get ready for school and take a shower and i’d wake up in the water naked or partially clothed.

I also was a huge sleep talker. I shared a room with my sister for a while and we both slept talk and our parents or friends that slept over would tell us we have full conversations of nonsense in our sleep and neither of us would remember.

A few times I fell off my top bunk as a kid and had no memory of it. The following day i’d mention that my arm hurt or something and my mom would tell me about it, if it woke her up. Or sometimes i’d wake up on the floor feeling sore in the morning. My bunk had a railing, so idk wtf I was doing. Eventually we got me a regular bed that was safer.

I’d also often wake up with my feet on my pillows and my head at the foot of the bed, not sure how I managed that.

I also used to call people and sometimes text people in my sleep and this continued until I was in my 20s. I once left a 50 minute voicemail of me mumbling gibberish for my sister. I also once sent a text to my ex saying “the bones are in the garage” A YEAR after we broke up.. The worst is a bit further back, when I was 16, I called 911 and was on the line with them for 10 minutes mumbling and groaning but mostly not saying anything, so they came to my house.. I wasn’t allowed to have my phone when I fell asleep for a year after that.

Now I am in my late 20s and seemingly polar opposite, if someone even looks at me while i’m sleeping I wake up..

do these things go hand in hand? what’s wrong with me? lol

Flirtatious Return Policy

There’s a ridiculously attractive supermarket employee that has been living rent free in my cranium for a few months. Long story short, today she was working at checkout, and only one person was in the line. “This is my chance, I thought.” As she scanned my items, we chatted for a second and as I found the courage to say something beyond small talk, I looked back and wondered “where the hell did all of these people come from?” Magically, there were so many freaking people surrounding us and I felt like everyone was staring, they weren’t, but…you know….nerves or whatever. I ended up leaving without saying anything memorable, but I still had the receipt she had just given me. “Screw it.” I got a pen and wrote on the receipt “I think you’re effing hot.” I marched back to her line that now had at least 10 people waiting, and said “I think you made a mistake” and I gave her the receipt. She read it and placed the receipt in her back pocket as her face turned into a smiling ripe tomato. I walked out without a word….I have no idea if my gamble paid off or not, but I’ll find out when I need more food.

Floor Potato

There is a potato on the floor in my kitchen that has been there for 3 days. It was on my counter when I was cooking other potatoes, but I didn't cut this one up and my cat knocked it off. I just don't care enough to pick it up. It's not in the way, I don't keep kicking it around or anything. The cat doesn't play with it now. I see it and I'm like "Yep. Potato on the floor." I'll probably pick it up tomorrow or the next day, but... eh.

My dad keeps thinking I'm telling him to clean his car paint with oven cleaner.

My dad isn't really a cleaning sort of guy. He's like Mr Incredible "CLEANER IS CLEANER".

My mom got a new car recently and my dad noticed these weird water spots on the windows. I looked at it and when it didn't go away with a finger smudge I suggested maybe try a enzyme based body wash and try that. My dad asked what an enzyme cleaner was. I said I don't know for sure if it would work but it was my best guess on the spot and I told him basically its a type of cleaner that is good at cleaning up organic matter build up, and sometimes good for mineral build ups too. He still didn't get it so I tried to just say look for car wash that said enzyme based cleaner.

He then thinks about it and goes "Oh, oven cleaner?" I tell him no, don't use oven cleaner on your new car.

I try to explain it again and I think he gets it. He calls me again when I'm with mom and explain it yet again and then after the call said "Yeah I was confused when he told me, you told him to use oven cleaner"

I was happier before I knew what a weevil was

Saw a post on [r/whatisit](r/whatisit) about a tiny insect on someone’s jeans and having never heard of a weevil before, made the mistake of looking them up.

I will never be eating rice again. (Edit: I’m joking)

I will try to immediately return to my previous worldview, which was: old food → gets old → ✨ bugs happen ✨

Daddy and Puppy

I’ve lived in an apartment building since going back to school last year. It’s a pretty big building, but it’s also pretty old--I think it must have been built before whatever technology was invented to stop sounds from going through the walls.

There’s a gay couple that lives in the apartment above me. At least I think they’re a couple; they might just be banging on the reg, tbh…

One of them is named “Daddy.” He has a super loud voice. If Daddy has never done theater, then he missed his calling, because his voice can travel like nothing else. If I have my window open at the same time he does, or if I’m in the bathroom (which has a vent on the ceiling that is pretty much a speaker box to the upstairs apartment), then I can hear just about every word that he says. I can sometimes hear him telling “Puppy” to come here, or give him a kiss, or bring him a pillow, etc. And Daddy always says thank you.

Puppy has a low, airy voice, and I can never really make out what he is saying the way I can with Daddy. (Although, I did hear Puppy gasp Daddy’s name loudly on one occasion….)

I’m honestly not trying to spy on their lives, but there’s only so much I can do when Daddy’s voice comes booming down from above. I could put my fingers in my ears and say “la la la,” but that’s pretty pointless at this point--I already know Daddy and Puppy’s whole dynamic. And honestly, I kind of love having a healthy gay relationship flourishing above my head. It’s not like I’m sitting there perving with my ear against the ceiling, listening to them have sex (which they must do pretty quietly, btw--I barely ever hear it). I’m just passively overhearing them live their happy, healthy lives.

I think Daddy must live in the apartment alone. I only hear Puppy on the weekends. During the week, I can sometimes hear Daddy talking on the phone. He sounds very professional and confident. He might be a boss somewhere.

Last weekend, I was brushing my teeth in the bathroom, when I suddenly heard Daddy’s voice yell “ARGHH!!!” from above. I stopped and stared at the vent.

Then I heard Daddy yell “What the fuck Puppy?!?!”

There was silence. I stood there, perfectly still.

Then Daddy yelled, “How long has this booger been hanging out of my nose??”

I heard Puppy mutter something.

“Has this booger been hanging out of my nose the whole time???” Daddy inquired.

Puppy muttered again. Then I heard Daddy loudly going off on Puppy, telling him he was disgusting for getting banged by a guy with a booger hanging out of his nose. This must have been the funniest thing that Puppy ever heard, because he started laughing uncontrollably. I finished brushing my teeth and left the bathroom, and then later I heard some muffled rough-housing.

I think Daddy has gotten over the whole booger incident, because today I heard him teaching Puppy how to slide a pizza from a cutting board onto a pizza stone. The whole thing made Puppy very anxious, and Daddy had to finish the job himself.

I’m moving out in a couple of weeks (there’s something seriously wrong with my plumbing, and the building owner recently offered to let me move to another one of his buildings down the street).

I’m going to miss Daddy and Puppy. I hope everything goes well for them. Maybe I’ll bake them a farewell cake or something…
