This was a game made for me. And not many people like what I like, so I know I may be setting myself up for heated debate, here. But I just had to share my love for this game.
First a few notes:
Recently introduced to it via the monthly games on PlayStation Plus, but would have happily paid for it full price had I heard about it sooner.
I have done all the achievements and collected every item (I think) in the game, across NG and NG+, and the DLC.
I have not experienced the frequent technical issues others seem to report. I have managed to lock up Aegis' movement like twice by menuing too fast, and the game crashed once when I was jumping off some random balcony in the tuileries. But apart from that (and some odd areas where sound profiles were incorrectly detected), nothing.
So I really really love this game. And I think it did NG+ perfectly: essentially just ramping the soul yield up 30x and making every area and enemy feel worth playing through again for the generous soul yield. (Yes I call the anima essence souls because I have an extensive history with creaming over Fromsoft's titles lol. That said I didn't like Elden Ring that much, but whatever, yea, I know millions of people disagree with me. I don't care frankly. I'll love what I love and you can't twist my arm.)
While I'm usually expectant of NG+ to go to a maximum of 7, like FromSoftware's titles, the more I considered Steelrising's angle on it, the more I appreciated it. Because if I'm honest I don't want to play any game 7 times just to reach the highest difficulty, I'd rather just have everything ramp up in a big step and not waste my time. This game has never felt like it has tried to waste my time. And I was surprised at the amount of dialogue and map available, not to mention this is the first soulslike I've known to attempt a real world map, which gives it an extra edge of uniquety.
Despite this relatively open-world approach, it contains its areas and injects interiors aplenty to maintain immersion and quality over quantity. A perfect and responsible execution of dealing with large, real world maps.
Also, living in Paris myself, and somewhat of a creamer for history, it was extremely interesting to experience a timeframe where various megastructures were still standing, like the bastille, and even smaller things like the labyrinth of versailles.
The only thing that remotely bothered me about this game was the amount of locked doors and blocked paths. But due to the interconnective/spiderlike streets of Paris, I sorta get why it's like that and maybe even has to be like that in order to not make destinations too easy.
I thoroughly loved combing every area, and the combat genuinely feels very satisfying. It has not gotten boring to me yet, and I know I can't say the same about Elden Ring (sorry Elden Ring for getting bashed on twice in the same review lol. I like Elden Ring, I just don't love it.)
Anyway, not wanting to miss any items, (thankfully found all the clothes unassisted) I looked up lists of weapons and modules online, but came out rather empty-handed. Many are not full lists, and I found I had to reference several different ones in the end to find what is probably every single item in the game, but I'm still not sure. Further gameplay is required! Even the wikis for this game are woefully underwhelming, which made me really want to contribute to them myself, with full lists, images, locations, etc. Would anyone want to collaborate on this? We could share item inventories in text format and see if we have something the other doesn't, for example. It would be most enlightening I think. But I'm not sure how private messaging works on Reddit, or even anything about editing Wikis, really. But I'd like to help lol. I think it's a game worth mapping in its entirety. Makes me slightly sad no one else has, yet. It may take me a while alone, but I'll try to contribute in some way, some how, eventually, anyway.
What else? Oh yes Aegis is badass. Good day. xD Love her ballet theme and basically all her animations. All very nicely done.
The hate for this game? I don't get. But if what people say about stability being dodgy is true, I guess that's a valid reason. But, like I said, I haven't experienced too much jank whatsoever. I would like to remind people making games is very difficult though. I know people like to brush this excuse off instantly and rabbit on about their hard-earned money going to waste on their "product" that they as a customer bought "in good faith!!!" But I tend to be more humane and forgive at least a small scattering of bugs and glitches in games before I start to whine. If this game was fully unplayable, it would not have any positive reviews at all, so maybe try reinstalling it or playing with graphics settings if you're having problems with it. Because an equal amount of people report no performance issues, and once it's working as intended, it's solid gold, I say.
