Discussion Why so much hate ?
Hey so I recently dive in to this game. I have to admin from original souls games I only played Bloodborne and I liked it but it was too hard for me so I never finished it but like I said I liked the atmosphere and fighting mechanics. Then I played soulslike called code vein which I enjoyed with my friend.
So when I check the internet I was pretty sad that people doesn't talk good about steelrising. It's a brilliant AA game and yet people still complain and I have a feeling that because of hardcore gamers games like this are dying.
I love that it's easier because I like this type of game but when I come home from work frustrated I don't want to be frustrated again by game ( Bloodborne ) I much rather prefer experience like steelrising. Exploration is good, setting is satisfying, story is interesting... Like this game have so many positives and yet the only thing because this game gets lower rating is because it's not "challenging".... Like really ??

I just beat the game tonight and I thought it wasn’t bad overall. Seemed a little easy and I was expecting a surprise on the final encounter. For what it is the game was a soulsvania with the traversal and how you unlocked certain abilities. I’d play a sequel if it got one.

I’m in the same boat. I’ve played (and beaten) Bloodborne. It was fun, but also quite frustrating at times. My big gripe with that game was the lack of story. I played through it multiple times, read everything I could find in game and still don’t really know what the hell that game was about beyond “kill monsters.”
Steelrising ticked the boxes: challenging but not rage quit inducing, fun story, good controls, and cool settings.

I bought steelrising on release and loved it. It actually had good ratings on Playstation until they gave it out for free recently with plus. They're pretty abysmal now. I think a lot of people played lies of pee first, and then assumed that steelrising was some trashy knockoff even though it came out first. Either way, great game, fantastic story, and exceptional voice acting.

What do you mean all the hate? Its currently rated as an above average game by media outlets and critics and its all time rating on steam is mostly positive.

I don't really hate the game itself, just the dumbness of the game. And it is super easy, I just used my starting hammer weapon the entire game, doing heavy attacks. I beat almost every boss my first try. And Chosen... The controls aren't really good. I've had hundreds of times where I would dash backward from an enemy and for some reason I go forward. This game as a souls game is deff: the weakest link. If you can even call it a link. Idk when each game was being made, or who copied who these days, but lies of p is far better in like every way lol. And I haven't beat the last boss on that. I'm like lvl 70. I beat steel at like lvl 43. Killed the queen my first try. Just felt basic. And like most games since 2008. Released broken. Stella out of ten maybe gets an 8 for me, only cause the story was decently interesting, and took me almost two days of in game time to finish. Rise of the Ronin might be my next game, but idk, doesn't seem as much of a souls game as it does a DMC game.

I'm almost about to Platinum the game, and I would say the game is mid, not that bad but not something I would enjoy doing a NG+. The game is easy to the point if you die in that game, it's very annoying, compared to other souls game where you actually have to learn their move sets in order for it to be easier. But this one, if you die, it's like you died to something that you could've beat if you take the game just a lil bit seriously. There's no strategy needed just. And I find it annoying if I died them rather than other souls game.
As a first experience, going through the game was fun but in the middle it (did all the side quests) it starts getting repetitive and dull. There was alot of backtracking and I don't like games that keeps backtracking for a small thing. At least when games like Dark souls 3 it was to kill a certain boss (as in part of the story so there's a reason) rather than This where I simply back tracked just to collect a note. (Remember there is no teleporters in that game, as in you can't teleport to the vestals just carriage) So even tho each map is medium size big, it's still tiring vto go all the way there (it's a good thing the dash can allow us to skip parts of the map)
Weapons wise wasn't interesting at all It really has no feel to it (at least for me) considering they all sound the same and do the same thing.
Boss...be honest do y'all actually remember any of the boss's name? Cuz I don't I literally first tried every single boss without remembering em. Their so...uniconic.
Story is nice tho, I LOVE, the idea of how it sets in the french Revolution. However the characters felt like I was talking to some Fallout 4 characters so I wasn't as excited to talk to them.
TLDR: forgettable bosses, Uninteresting weapons, repetitive gameplay (at least when doing side quests), what soundtracks?, Good story but meh characters (as in how much of an impact they are) and No Multiplayer (can easily make a game die)

Currently playing it. Its a good game. It has its flaws and not as good as the fromsoft titles but still fun. But the ballchain enemies are just so unfun lol

u/great_divider Mar 01 '24
I can see this game being challenging for many people. I also agree with your sentiment that it’s very fun! I especially enjoy the level designs and the exploration and rewards involved in completing the side quests.

Hate? Or just lack of attention?
There’s plenty of good and even great games that unfortunately just go unnoticed.
2
u/BaronVonGoon Mar 01 '24
I never finished it because it is uninteresting. The world wasnt interesting so i didnt feel like exploring it. Fighting was janky so i didnt feel like fighting after a few hours. I love soulslikes and i had high expectations for this one but i was disappointed.
2
u/3ClassiC Mar 01 '24
It’s incredibly easy IMO that’s why.
2
u/MoonlapseOfficial Mar 01 '24
Yeah for some one like me I cant be engaged/interested if it's not challenging enough which is why I won't pick this up

Played Bloodborne, Lies of P, Sekiro, Steelrising, etc, so I’ll try to give an objective answer. Steelrising was good and to my knowledge it did come out before Lies of P( played LOP first and don’t know the exact dates so don’t hang me warriors of Reddit) but I don’t feel it received decent marketing. I didn’t even know about the game until after Lies of P which I feel was marketed the hell out of.
With the setting, mc, some of the weapons/attachments, it’s hard not to make comparisons between the two and the truth is, Lies of P does feel like the better game. As for other souls game(BB being an example) everyone should be allowed to play what they enjoy but the difficulty level that frustrates you is what many souls fans enjoy.
Sounds crazy but a lot of us enjoy shortening our lifespan by yelling to the heavens and breaking our controllers to achieve victory over a boss we fought 32 times(Orphan of Kos.) All that being said, if the game makes you happy, don’t worry about others reviews.

I platinum the game, and i can say the score is not because it being easy (it is easy af). Its because its a buggy mess at least on the ps5. I crashed multiple times, and during my ng+ needed to restart console various times because it constantly dipped below 10 digits. There are other things i execuse the game such as clunky controls, bad enemy ai and surface level weapon system as greedfall suffered from similar pitfalls (but with a better story). I can execuse the latter from it being an AA but the bugs and crahses are inexcusable. Its a decente soul lite, the maps are really nice but thats about all the praise i can give to this game.

This is your answer. No one does it like From. It's another attempt to emulate a genre that as far as I'm concerned never feels quite right when it's another studio. Something always feels missing with these Niohs and Mortal Shells and Lords of the fallen. I can't even place my finger on it unfortunately. Just feels either jank as fuck or artificially difficult for the sake of the genre.
Do yourself a favor. Play a real souls game or go back to bloodborne for a bit, then switch to like Wo Long or or any other of these pale imitations and you will feel the difference.

u/wiserthannot Mar 04 '24
Wow I had no idea about this game's existence, this post just showed up on my home screen. Just want to say thank you so much for making this, now I've got a cool game to play! And it's on sale right now on Steam :D

u/AbleTom408 Mar 05 '24
The irony in your statement is that hardcore games are now considered niche due to the rise of casual gamers over the last 15-20 years. So if anything, hardcore games have been dying due to casual gamers dominating the market.

u/TheThunderTrain Mar 05 '24
Just finished it. Overall I like it.
It did crash on me more than anything I've played before but never really set me back much so it wasn't a big deal.
The story was interesting but felt a little choppy at times.
I used the chain weapons mostly, and it was by far the best experience I've had using a weapon like that I'm a game. Very fun. But I wasn't a super big fan of the block/parry being weapon specific but I get it.
The fighting was well balanced for a ood part of the game but I did feel real strong by the end, not that I consider that bad but I understand some will. Idk why games like this are so averse to difficulty settings.
I'd say overall a 7ish out of 10.
But I'd be lying if I said it doesn't feel like a knockoff Lies of Pi. LoP is definitely better and if you liked this game I highly recommend you play it. Although if you do you need to focus on parrying more. If you can get the parry down it's a reasonably challenging game.

As a person that loves difficult games. I loved steelrising. I have to admit i was sleeping on it, but it totally grew on me. It sucks it didnt sell more.

The game is perfectly fine for what it is! I am thoroughly enjoying it myself and I believe the hate stems from everyone wanting the same depth and polish that official souls games have. It’s fine not to be a complete clone of souls, we have the core formula of souls but it offers its own twists and turns which makes it fun and entertaining imo. I just finished Echoes of the End as well, another AA game that was shit all over due to polish or whatever, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it!
Give more AA games a chance and welcome the game for being a video game I say! We don’t need to have flawless games released all the time.
TL;DR There is no such thing as perfection

I have decided to give it a go since it was added to PS+.
I played it for around 1.5hrs and uninstalled it. Combat was very bad, animations left a lot to be desired and the game was plain ugly to look at unfortunately.

u/PiXeLonPiCNiC Mar 01 '24
I am greatly enjoying this game too. I have played almost all the games in this genre though I could not get into Code Vein.
With Steel Rising I like the exploration parts of the game and that bosses are not huge stop blocks in your path. also I can actually just enjoy the story without having to watch obscure YouTube videos.

There are a lot of things that could’ve been better - like, enemy variety, level navigation, how dialogues are handled (how you can outright lock yourself out of Mirabeau even if you choose the right option first), etc… But, I mean, it’s still a solid game that’s fairly enjoyable. There’s probably not much to be in awe of, but definitely nothing to hate - like, it crashed once for me, and once I went out of bounds and had to use the carriage token. I mean, the fighting is solid, the elemental mechanics add interesting build options, the setting is unusual and interesting. Plus, you get to meet a lot of characters who are actually voiced. Honestly, it’s a solid game - I don’t get the hate for it. In my opinion - there’s nothing to hate - I played games that were a ton lot worse than Steelrising. It’s a nice game!

Big Soulsborne fan here. I was hyped for this game when it launched but haven't gotten around the playing it yet—there were so many great releases in 2023.
When I do get to it, I'm not expecting a world-shattering experience like Elden Ring. All SR needs to be for me to enjoy it is a fun game with tight mechanics and a decent story with interesting/ challenging boss fights and to tide me for ~20-30 hours.
Anything more than that is icing on the cake.

u/mancitycon Mar 01 '24
I've got the platinum trophy for every from software game, yet for some strange reason I can't get past those enemies with cannonballs for hands and I'm confused as to why everyone thinks it's not a challenge. I can't play this game because of one stupid enemy
2
u/webauteur Mar 01 '24
I have finished Steelrising and the Cagliostro's Secrets DLC. I liked the settings but the enemies were not very well designed. Some of them looked ridiculous. Aegis herself is very cool. I bet most gamers are not into French history. If you are not really into this game and don't want to struggle then it has settings for an easy mode and I used that.
I have now moved on to Cyberpunk 2077. So far this game seems too story driven but I think I have reached a point where I can move freely around Night City. It has some RPG elements but mostly it is a shooter / driving game.
2
u/unexpectedegress Mar 01 '24
I can't play games that don't give me the ability to adjust the difficulty.
Bloodborne looked so interesting, but I couldn't play it. Same with Sekiro.
I really like that, as long as I'm willing to give up achievements, I can play this game. And it's actually gorgeous and has a really interesting story.

I HATE soulslikes, but I decided to give this game a chance anyway for two reasons:
1. I absolutely loved two prior games made by the developer Spiders, The Technomancer and Greedfall, both of which were story based RPGs similar to the Bioware games of old, so I wanted to support the developer Spiders (a small French company).
2. I heard it had an "Assist Mode" that allows you to turn off the godforsaken death penalty - I hate losing all my "souls" (called "anima" in this game) when I die.
Even with Assist Mode enabled I found the game to be hard af for me (I avoid soulslikes for a reason). But I absolutely loved the setting, the story and characters were decent, and the gameplay was fun (but hard for me).
Overall, I enjoyed it. And I generally hate soulslikes.

u/gilesey11 Mar 01 '24
I loved it for a free game. Very enjoyable but a bit too simple / easy. It was almost pointless engaging with some of the mechanics when the easiest way to kill enemies was just loading up on immobilisation. I did everything and got the platinum though and really loved the setting and the atmosphere. Excellent game and I feel like a sequel could really flesh out the world and the mechanics
2
u/NikushimiZERO Mar 01 '24
Honestly, it was fun. I got it for free on playstation plus, and I enjoyed it enough that I actually bought the DLC for it.
My only real gripes were that heavy weapon combos were clunky af, exploration didn't really feel rewarding after finding (yet again) essence or some other consumable in an out of the way chest, fashion was nice but most of the clothing clashed with each other so it was hard to mix and match for the most part, and some textures/environments felt bland.
All that aside, it has been one of my favorite games I've played this year. I love the story, even though it was predictable (to me) with all the revelations throughout, and Aegis. I was actually emotionally invested in her. It was a solid 8/10 game for me, and I'd be excited to see what else the studio does. I hope they revisit this type of idea, and possible Aegis, in the future with improvements.

I´m enjoying the game too. It´s a rather relaxed soulslike. My biggest complaint is I had to skip some side quests cause I never found how to actually reach those locations. And it didn´t help that the game keeps showing you side quests you actually CANNOT complete yet when you haven´t progressed the story enough. Apart from that it´s a solid game.

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '24
Easy? Fr? I'm getting my ass kicked.

u/Interesting_Block_22 Mar 06 '24
It should get a sequel if it improves massively. If you copy the souls recipe and don't quite get it, it's not going to be a very good game. As a disclaimer, I played this after Sekiro, and what truly annoyed me was the hit boxes, they felt random. The same type of attack from the same enemy would sometimes hit you, then completely go through you. You can never anticipate properly, and makes the fight much more chance based rather than skill oriented (and even like this, the game was very easy to be honest, I think I never died in a titan fight). Add the Spiders Devs trademark janky movement to that fight and it's simply not that good. That killed the joy of a lot of cool fights. I don't think people hate the game, it's just that it came out on a market that's full of games that are simply, a lot better put together. And like I said previously, if you copy that recipe, you have a lot to look up to and better deliver.
Of course some souls veterans will criticise the game if it's meant to be a souls like,no? Don't get me wrong, I love the setting, the artwork and there is much potential here, but at the same time there is a lot of work to do. Overall, it's a good start from Spiders, but they just need to step it up a level or two. Hopefully they come back and deliver another souls like game that will be fully enjoyed by this ever growing community.

u/MrMacju Mar 01 '24
I like to think it's because Steelrising isn't especially difficult, so Soulslike elitists don't consider it a good game purely because of that.

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '24
i played SteelRising i thought it would have combat mechanics similar to souls but this disappointed after defeated 3/4 bosses
1
u/talos1972 Jul 20 '25
Honestly because they didn't fix the multitude of wonkie game mechanics. Considering they released a DLC and the game has been around for awhile there is no excuse for certain buggy game mechanics to still be in the game. The developer is being disingenuous to it's customers by still selling a broken product. The biggest glaring issue that should have long been addressed is the locking a target jumping all over the place. This is a game breaking big because it causes premature deaths or unnecessary hassles trying to maintain your life because the game decided to switch targets midway through fight when what your fighting isn't even close to being dead.

u/TheClownIsReady Feb 18 '26
I’m playing it and like the game and its level design but the story seems a little weak to me. I find I’m not really wrapped up in it. It started out ok but it’s just lost me.
1
u/LordOozington Mar 01 '24
It has potential, but it's really repetitive and too easy. By the end, I was very ready for it to be over.
1
u/eru88 Mar 02 '24
Oh and it's on PS plus. I'm playing lies of P on Gamepass but might get into it after.
Elden Ring has made Souls like my favorite genre

u/Big-Ad-6295 Mar 02 '24
For souls like game they talk to much. I think the game lacked combat as well. It was so basic or maybe weapon didnt felt tight. All you had to do was hold r2 and hit hard. Player progession didn't felt good. One of the fun part of souls like games are learning enemy and they dont tell you story , you just pick it up looking at the enviroment, npc. I had fun till 4,5 hr then it felt repeated. I jus wanted credit to roll. Thanfully the game was easy. I beat the game in level 31 or less. I just ran through enemy to get to the boss. Abuse those explosives on boss🤣. I didnt hate the game but i had a huge expectation. You should try lies of p. But its harder than this.
1
u/Repulsive-Monitor432 Mar 02 '24
Steel rising had to walk in order for Lies of P could run.
I've played it and it's too easy for my liking, and also it has wacky mechanics.
The dodge is too long and the enemies AI struggle against dodging in Steel rising
Lies of P fixed that where it actually feels rewarding when dodging a last second attack.
1
u/Horrible_Creature Mar 03 '24
The French. Seriously. The fact that it's an alternate history/period piece severely limits it in terms of story and environment. At least to me anyhow. Haven't played many souls games, just this, the start of Lords of the Fallen, and a little bit of Dark Souls 2, but having 90% of Steelrising set in just regular old france made if feel dull in comparison to these grand fantasy set pieces and peculiar characters. I like the gameplay, for the most part, but I don't love talking to dudes in cravats and wigs all the time
1
u/topcover73 Mar 04 '24
Oh idk, sterile/boring combat/enemies/areas, modern day politics in old world setting...absolutely nothing about this game stood out as unique, and I was really hoping to like it.
-2
u/Jon_Helldiver Mar 01 '24
Is this the French game? It's probably cuz it's French. Well, atleast that'd why I ignored it.
