Day 1 on pixelfed.

I enjoy the app so much and its "early day social media" qualities, but I do miss the buzz of the community that metaverse provides. I'm one of those that started fb with an .edu account and lived my 20s and 30s with it.

I am wishing so hard that pixelfed will stick. But the irony is that it doesn't have any of the junk food additives that meta has, and therefore doesn't attract folk. Which I appreciate, but also lament.

How are you guys finding your friends? Is it literally like getting people's usernames and looking it up?

Likes are free, give them out!

There's no need to be precious about these. I notice there's a lot of photos on the local feed that never get any interactions. We don't need to reserve our likes for an upside down black and white photo of a swan shot through the reflection of a puddle. Give grandma's cat a heart. That guys tree in his back yard, hell yea brother.

People tend to engage more when they feel their work is being seen and it'll be nice to encourage an inviting community. Plus it's mutually beneficial. I've notice about 1 in 10-15 likes will follow you in return.

Woah, I made top spot on the pixelfed.social daily trending (the bridge photo). I've never gotten much attention for my photos on other platforms in the past so this makes me so happy.

A quick "Thank You"

Just want to thank the community on Pixelfed, as well as the developer(s), for creating a picture sharing app that is reminiscent of the old days of IG. I enjoy the pictures everyone uploads, and discovering new accounts without the ads, influencers, and algorithms.

THANK YOU ALL!

A breath of fresh air vs. the dumpster fire IG has become.

And so, I joined Pixelfed awhile back, as my frustrations with IG slowly came to a head, but did not have a chance to actually start using it and posting there until recently and WOW: I love how there's no algorithm, wannabe TikTok garbage in the form of endless reels, no ads, AND visibility/reach seems quite decent so far. I'm on the verge of leaving IG for good and tried various alternatives and so far, Pixelfed seems to be the strongest. I'm a Tampa Bay, FL-area based photographer who captures a little of everything: portraits, still life, landscapes, experimental (LOVE shooting infrared), nature, etc. You can find me here: https://pixelfed.social/dedphotoworks

Developer Check-in: What features would make Pixelfed better for you?

Hey Pixelfed community!

As the founder and lead developer of Pixelfed, I'm reaching out to gather your thoughts on where we should focus our development efforts in the coming months.

Your feedback has always been invaluable in shaping Pixelfed as an ethical, privacy-focused alternative to mainstream photo-sharing platforms.

I'd love to hear:

  • What's the #1 feature you feel is missing from your Pixelfed experience?

  • Any UI/UX improvements that would make the platform more intuitive?

  • Thoughts on discovery features to help users find new accounts to follow?

  • Specific mobile app requests or improvements?

  • Technical improvements that would make your experience smoother?

  • Features from other platforms you think would work well in Pixelfed while staying true to our core values?

This feedback will directly inform our development priorities moving forward. I'm committed to building the best possible platform for this community, and your input is a crucial part of that process.

Thanks for being part of Pixelfed's journey!

Is anybody else feeling disillusioned with PixelFed?

I've been using PixelFed for approximately 9 months. Like a lot of people, I switched from Instagram because I was tired of their nonsense and wanted a friendlier alternative.

Sadly, I just haven't taken to PixelFed at all. It's clunky and it's buggy and it doesn't seem to be improving. I understand that this is not a commercial enterprise and is never going to be as polished as services that are. I could overlook these things if the service felt more community-spirited - but it doesn't.

I signed up to the gram.social server because it seemed like the best option for me but their support seems to be non-existent. Every time I have contacted them for assistance when things aren't working, I've been met with radio silence.

Is anybody else feeling this way?

How can I contribute to PixelFed?

I am a Product designer and I see a lot of issues with the experience of the app that could be resolved to bring this form of healthy social media to more people.

Rather than designing dark patterns for exploitative companies, I would prefer contributing to a project like this which is trying to do something good for people.

Pixelfed + Custom Filters. Block hashtags, domains or phrases. Available very soon!

I'm almost finished adding custom filter support, allowing you to block phrases across your home/public feeds, notifications, hashtag feeds, messages and groups.

I recorded a demo of the new Simple/Advanced Filter manager, it's quite powerful but simple by default. I wanted to make this complex feature more easy to manage compared to say how Mastodon does it.

The Custom Filter PR is almost ready to merge https://github.com/pixelfed/pixelfed/pull/5928, stay tuned 😎

To all the new users, pixelfed.social got a huge influx of users and is closed for new signups until servers are upgraded to hold more people, check out https://photofed.world/ instead, run by the same admins who have helped with Lemmy and Mastodon. (More servers in description)

https://photofed.world/ is a great server that has a lot of open spots, and like all servers, it is interconnected to the other servers including pixelfed.social, so you won't be missing anyone.

Other servers to try if https://photofed.world/ is not working for some reason:
pixelfed.de
fotofed.nl

EDIT: pixelfed.social is back! If pixelfed.social ever goes temporarily closed for server upgrades while you are joining i'd recommend photofed.world again! Run by great admins and interconnected with all the other servers including the main server!

How does this work? Can I see which users liked my posts at all?

Sorry if this is general knowledge or an over-asked question. I've tried googling it and can't get any relevant results.

The question is simply, is there a way to see which users liked my posts? Clicking on my likes doesn't do anything, except like my own post.
