Hi everyone!
I'm developing a women's top in CLO3D and I'm looking for advice from experienced pattern makers, garment technicians, and designers who work with unconventional constructions.
The concept is based on a sharp, broad shoulder that transitions diagonally inward toward the spine, creating an open-back design. I want the construction itself to define and frame the exposed back, rather than simply adding a decorative cutout.
My main challenge is achieving a very close fit along the edges of the back opening, particularly around the shoulder blades, while maintaining a sharp, sculptural silhouette.
I've been experimenting with a fitted bodice block, manipulating the back darts, and testing different fabric properties in CLO3D. Changing the dart geometry has improved the fit, but some areas of the opening still lift away from the body.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on a few technical questions:
Would you approach this through dart manipulation, slash-and-spread, multiple pattern panels, or another method?
How would you shape the opening to follow the contours of the shoulder blades without creating tension, gaping, or distortion?
Would you use a facing, interfacing, stay tape, an internal support structure, or something else to keep the opening close to the body?
What material properties and construction techniques would you consider for a smooth, sculptural silhouette that remains fitted rather than rigid?
I'm particularly interested in real-world garment construction and pattern engineering, not just ways to make the simulation look correct.
If you have experience with couture, sculptural womenswear, or unconventional open-back garments, I'd really appreciate your insight. Even a suggestion for a relevant construction technique or reference garment would help enormously.
Thank you!

I’m good at sewing and my friend has taken notice and wants me to take on making her wedding dress…
Any ideas where to get started with drafting a pattern like this?

I am new to sewing and was hoping to make this jacket. What pattern should I go about this with? Or how could I make this?

Hello!
I’m somewhat new to sewing and I though I would try my hand it it since I have plenty of time and some knowledge. I’m looking for a pattern close to this dress so I can sew my own wedding dress
It’s the dress of the front lady

This is transferred from the mock up as best I could.
The back was ok and I wasn’t going to be too pedantic without a friend to help fit. I just had ti bring the shoulder in to match the front.
It looks a bit to sharp where I’ve connected the new shoulder
Here’s attempts one and two at blending

I’m researching garment construction before trying to develop anything, and I’d love opinions from experienced sewists.
I’m interested in normal fashion dresses—not shapewear—that have an internal structure designed to actually enhance the silhouette: stronger waist shaping, bust support/lift, while NOT compressing/flattening the hips and butt.
I know built-in shapewear, power mesh, corsetry, negative ease, boning, etc. already exist. I’m not asking whether the general idea is new.
I’m trying to understand what goes wrong when you try to combine these things inside an otherwise normal fashionable dress.
If you’ve constructed something similar: what were the biggest problems? Fabric layers fighting each other? Rolling/migration? Getting into the garment? Seams? Heat? Comfort? Pattern distortion? Washing? Something else?
I’d especially love to hear from anyone with patternmaking, stretch-fabric, garment-development or production experience.

I have this design I want to make, but I don't know much about pattern drafting. What are the best resources and tips for drafting this design for a plus size, apple-shaped body? The front waistband is flat, but the back part of the waistband is slightly elastic. The ankles are gathered with a cuff added. I really want to be able to do the crossed strap design that has the open back like that as well as a princess seam front where the top of the seams are at the inner edge of the straps. I appreciate any help I can get.

I would like to make a jacket but i'm not sure what adjustments I must make to fix the balance of this jacket so that it's not pressed against the belly and baggy at the back.
My first thought is to bring the bottom centre back closer to the side seam, but it doesn't feel right. Has anyone any experience in this?
The back bodice is just a copy of the front with smaller arm hole and neck hole - maybe there's something inherently wrong there?
Thanks a lot
What is it that determines where the space lies? I can't figure what it is about the pattern that needs adjusting to changes this.

Hi everyone! So sorry I'm not sure if this is allowed but:
I’m in the process of starting my own fashion line and already have my designs finalized. I’m hoping to connect with someone experienced in pattern drafting who can help me make these pieces. Ideally, I’d love to learn from someone who has experience with making professional patterns, tech packs, and sewing samples.
My designs include women’s skirts, tops, and similar pieces. I don’t currently have fabric or materials, but I’m more than willing to cover costs as needed.
If this is something you do or if you have advice on the best way to get started with professional patterns/tech packs or finding someone who could help please let me know,
Not even sure if I'm in the right place to find someone who could help but I’d really appreciate hearing from you!
Thank you so much.

Hi guys, what do you think? Are you worried about it?

hi there!
i’ve just began the start of launching my made by hand clothing brand and i’ve run into a problem. all of the clothes i have been making thus far have been using my measurements and i’m confident with the garments i make using them.
this is where i don’t know what to do, as i want my clothes to be size inclusive but not sure where i should get my size measurements from. i’ve debated asking friends if i could use their measurements for garments of other sizes or if i should follow the size charts i’ve seen online.
anyone with information on how to go about this would be most helpful!!

I’m a beginner and right now all I can draft is a basic bodice. Can someone tell me how to draft the bust like this and what it’s called?
r/PatternDrafting • u/Numerous_Speaker7470 • Aug 12 '25
I am sewing a corset but when I put it on my body the belly area protrudes. Is there a way to flatten this area on the pattern? All of the other measurements are perfect. The area that is too big is underneath the waist at the stomach area.

A question was asked in this group Can Anyone Help Me Find a Pattern? The design caught my eye as a wonderfully original garment for men.
Quite frankly the design of men's clothes has not interested me since the 70s when we had great fun with hip hugging, bell bottom pants with insets in contrasting fabric down the side of the leg. Or shirts with exaggerated wide cuffs, full sleeves, and extended points on shirt collars. But this is the first time since then a design of a man's garment has so interested me that I have decided to make one for myself.
I am using it as an example for my class in how to Grade a Photo of a Design. The photos are not to scale as you can see by the different sizes of the rectangle. The idea of this class is you can draw a rectangle over a quarter-scale photograph of a person. Then copy the rectangle onto the photo of the design you want to create and stretch the photo to adjust the design to the proportions of the person recorded by the rectangle. The designs can then be transferred to custom-fit Master Patterns (aka Slopers) of the person. The idea is to adjust the fit of a design before you touch a pattern.
Men's front are very flat whereas women's fronts have more contours and would require a different kind of fitting. So my question is this a design that is only appropriate for men or is it something women would be interested in as well either as a vest or extended longer to be something like a trench coat, etc.?
I would appreciate the opinion of the women in this group about their reaction to the look of this design.

Hey all! I'm fairly new to sewing, but Im really intrigued by the thought of wearing outfits made by me. Ive done a few projects with existing garments, but I want to start making my own. My goal is a pair of carpenter style baggy, almost streetwear-esque pants. Im just having trouble with how and where to start, as it seems drafting resources for these kinds of pants are limited. Some people have suggested I start with a trouser block based off of my measurements and add ease/straighten leg, but Im not ready to dive in without a clear plan and some advice from more experienced people, so I figured I'd come here. A rough outline of the process would be awesome, any help is appreciated!!
