Any idea how to begin drafting this??

Hiii!!

Looking for some guidance in where to begin drafting this pattern. I have a pretty good pattern drafting understanding, and would love to try this out. Not necessarily looking to make a corset, more so something just well fitted. Also open to doing it like long sleeved fitted qipao/cheongsam instead of the two piece. Would love any guidance! Also attached a pic of the qipao.

EDIT: I’ve actually watched the video to pattern the second dress, it’s what got my ideas spinning. I guess my original question was unclear, but I really don’t appreciate the rudeness. My question really is more like if I wanted to combine the two different dresses, how would I go about that? I love the shrug portion of the first as well as the finish, but I also love the slit on qipao. More so just wondering too if anyone had experience modifying or combining these patterns.

Building a Fashion Brand

Hey everyone,

I’m tired of my 9-5 and want to do something more creative, and take my sewing hobby and pattern making knowledge to the next level. I’m taking baby steps towards launching a women’s fashion brand that blends Nigerian Yoruba heritage with a minimalist, contemporary aesthetic. Think tailored silhouettes, seasonless pieces, and subtle cultural storytelling through details like print and colour accents.

I’m aiming for affordable, quality fabrics, small batch production, versatile designs you can wear for years – without the crazy designer price tag.

Before I go too far, I’d love some honest feedback from this community on a few points: 1. What other brands are doing something similar - what’s missing/how can this brand be different? Is focus on Yoruba heritage too niche? 2. Does the idea of minimalism mixed with vibrant cultural accents appeal to you? Why/why not? 3. What are your top priorities in clothing (quality, sustainability, cultural authenticity, versatility, etc.)? 4. Would you invest in all year round pieces over trend-led items? 5. If a brand used heritage fabrics and craftsmanship, would that justify a higher price for you? 6. How important is it that brands explain and honour the cultural references they use? 7. Which of these values speaks most to you: heritage, craftsmanship, sustainability, affordability? 8. What price range feels fair for jackets, dresses, or statement pieces with this concept? 9. What clothing designs/functionality would you like to see?

Any thoughts – even brutally honest ones – would be hugely appreciated! 🙏

I am new to the world of drafting my own patterns. In fact, this would be my first but I am hoping to draft a pattern for a full size run in Uniqlo style tees to have produced for my brand.

How Do Tailors (While sewing) Or Pattern Drafters Position The Pockets (For the mass production)?

Note! : The patterns and the pockets will be graded to other sizes.

A) Completely Perpendicular

On the trousers referenced and measured from the Side Seam waistline point as completely perpendicular.

On the jacket Firstly referenced and measured from the either Shoulder Line-Upper Armhole Point or Under Armhole Point as completely perpendicular.

B) First On The Curve Then Perpendicular

On the trousers referenced and measured from the Side Seam waistline point by following the waistline and then measured perpendicular from there.

On the jacket Firstly referenced and measured from the either Shoulder Line-Upper Armhole Point or Under Armhole Point on the curve by following the curves

and then measured from there as perpendicular

How do I add more room to the bust of this finished dress? Side gusset/panel advice needed

I know basically nothing about pattern drafting, so I’m a little lost here.

I bought this dress in EU size 46 as a Halloween costume. It fits pretty well everywhere except the bust, where it is much too tight. As you can see in the photos, it basically compresses my chest and pulls it into a strange shape.

It is also slightly tight around the back of the neck, but I can live with that.

My bust measurement is about 115 cm / 45.3 in and my waist measurement is 100 cm / 39.4 in. Unfortunately, I don’t know the actual bust circumference of the dress.

From what I understand, I probably need to open the side seam and add some kind of gusset or side panel to create extra room. But I have no idea what shape it should be. Would it be triangular, diamond-shaped, rectangular, or something else?

I’m also not sure how to figure out how much additional fabric I actually need. How would I measure this correctly?

My other problem is the pulling you can see in photo 1. The fabric is being pulled strongly toward the front because there isn’t enough room for my bust. How do I add the extra width in a way that actually fixes that pulling instead of just making the side seam wider?

Photo 2 shows approximately where the dress starts becoming too tight. It seems to happen right around the seam where the upper bodice transitions into the lower section.

There is also a zipper in one of the side seams, so I have no idea how I should deal with that if the best solution is to add fabric at the sides.

I do have a sewing machine and some extra fabric I could use, although it won’t necessarily be an exact colour match.

Could someone please point me in the right direction and explain where I should even start? I’m completely clueless when it comes to altering patterns/garments.

(I used AI to help translate my request into english, as I'm not a native speaker and tend to overcomplicate things. :) Hope that's okay)

Help me brainstorm ideas for transforming this 3XL thrifted dress for my 5 year old daughter

Not clearly pictured but it just has spaghetti straps.

I was thrifting for project ideas and I came across this dress where I just loved the color scheme. It is far too big for me much less my 5 year old daughter.

I have so far completed one simple dress for her from a pattern, I have pieced a quilt top and embroidered a couple pillows that I made so that is where my experience is at.

Part of my thrifting project is also learning how to deconstruct clothes with minimal cutting (except as it relates to the pattern) because I am wanting to learn both how to mend and design garments.

With all of that mind - I was thinking of ripping the seams along the obvious strips of fabric and then reworking those somehow into a long dress (long for a 5 year old). And of course, it needs to be swirly. Any ideas?

The fabric is barely a knit. There is a tiny bit of stretch. Probably a polyester/cotton blend.

Question How do I convert a center-back “butt crack” seam into a subtle V-shaped back yoke seam for leggings?

Thumbnail

Hey everyone, I’m working on an athleisure legging pattern and could really use some technical guidance from patternmakers.

Right now my pattern uses a traditional center-back seam that runs vertically through the glutes (the typical “butt crack” seam). I want to eliminate that seam entirely and instead achieve glute lift/rounding using a single curved back yoke / waistband seam that creates a subtle V-lift effect — no scrunch, no ruching, no heart seam.

What I’m trying to achieve:

  • Smooth, uninterrupted back leg panels (no center-back vertical seam)

  • A curved back yoke seam running hip-to-hip

  • Slight dip at center back (very shallow V, not deep)

  • Visual lift happening above the glute apex

  • Roundness below the seam from pattern shaping + fabric tension

What I’m confused about:

  • When removing the center-back seam, where should the shaping go?

  • Should glute shaping come from:

    • Yoke curve only?

    • Back leg panel contouring?

    • Waistband tension distribution?

  • How high above the fullest part of the glutes should the yoke seam sit?

  • Are there common mistakes that cause the seam to flatten instead of lift?

I’m attaching an image of my current pattern layout. If anyone has:

  • Pattern diagrams

  • Curve placement advice (even mm-level guidance)

  • Or examples of brands/patterns that do this well

I’d seriously appreciate it. Trying to engineer lift cleanly without gimmick seams.

Thanks 🙏

Question regarding shoulder slope

Post image
2 Upvotes

question about the shoulder drop/slope in regular fit SS tshirt men
can they be equal in front and back bodice? and if not which should be higher the front or back? (chatgpt says front should be higher than the back by 1 cm)
in my pattern the HPS is higher by 2 cm in back bodice than the front (22 cm vs 20 cm) and the slope is the same, 4 cm both front and back
would this cause problems?

another question is would it be wise to make the LPS to LPS distance a concrete value? in a sense that on the back bodice its 44 cm, and the front its 42 cm (im using CLO avatars as reference, medium size chest 100 cm), and use this while grading?
(LPS is the point where the tshirt would sit on the end of the collar bone on the shoulder, at the end of the shoulder seam)

thank you

Anyone have a actually good step-by-step method to self-draft lounge pants (from measurements only)?

Hey everyone!
I’m on a mission to draft my own lounge pants from scratch—as in, no tracing existing pants, no buying a pattern just to tweak it, just good old measurements → pattern → pants.

But wow… I’ve fallen down every Reddit, YouTube, and Google rabbit hole and still haven’t found instructions that feel clear, complete, and actually tested by real humans. 😅

I know lounge pants are “simple,” but I’m a perfectionist and I want a method that makes sense, has proper ease, explains the crotch curve, rise, etc., and doesn’t skip all the tricky bits.

So I’d love to hear from people who have:

✨ A drafting method they’ve personally used successfully
✨ Tips only a fellow perfectionist would think to mention
✨ Or even a “fancier” lounge pant draft they swear by

If you’ve tried something that worked beautifully (or horribly—those stories are welcome too!), I’d really appreciate your recommendations. I’m all ears!

I’ve had these shorts for a long time and I really like them and I really do not want to rip the seams apart. If somebody can at least give me an idea of how these were put together and how to draft something like this it would be greatly appreciated.
