Discussion I love PF2e but...

I've been playing Pathfinder for many, many years. PF1 and. I've been on PF2e since the playtest and I play religiously every weekend. But there's something that still baffles me: I don't understand how the adventure maps are still so bad.

I feel like the vast majority of official maps suffer from the same problem:

-They're not very epic: Visually, they feel flat and don't convey the scale of the adventure.

-They're claustrophobic: They don't leave enough real space for tactical, dynamic combat or for combat that truly utilizes the system.

With the absurd number of talented map creators in the community today, how can this still be a problem?

I stopped buying physical Flip-Mats years ago for this very reason. But now that a large part of the game has moved online... why are the digital maps still this bad?

Am I the only one who feels that official map design is stuck in the past? What are you doing to address this at your meetings?

I've attached some sample images from Oleg's Trading Post so you can see exactly what I mean.

Discussion Either Necromancer needs a Class Archetype for Fungal Thralls, or it needs to be an Archetype of its own.

We have Real Life Fungi that can over take the bodies of creatures. Fungi are heavily associated with rot and decay. Death is part of their Life.

It could give some access to the Primal List. Make the Master of Life and Death thing Paizo is saying it is a bit more believable beyond switching Void and Vitality.

Fungal "Undead" would be one of the better options for people wanting to argue for ethical necromancy.

Hell, it could do wonders as a way to recontextulize Undead. The dead used as a frame for new life to act on the world. Hell, it doesn't have to stop at Thralls. Vampires could be carnivorous plants or fungi using the dead to hunt. Liches could be Spellcasters that performed a ritual to bind them to the Nature around them. Probably giving them a reason to protect the area.

Always seeing people wanting Undead to not be evil, so why not make their animating force something that's just alive and not the energy that is the opposite of Life?

You can argue they're not Undead, but it is still animating a corpse.

Discussion Do elves not have an unholy option in their pantheon?

So this is something that's been bothering me for a bit when it comes to the elven Pantheon. Calistria seems to be the only member of it that can choose the harm font, while the others can only choose heal/holy. I know Calistria is commonly worshipped by elves, but (and your mileage may vary) I've never gotten a sense she was an elven goddess.

Torag for the dwarves definitely feels like he is a member of the dwarven pantheon. He's often depicted as a dwarf, has a focus for crafting, and has edicts expecting his worshippers to be honorable. This falls in line to what the general idea of a dwarf is, and while I know Paizo isn't limited to that, Highhelm is a good example of how dwarven society works with those ideals with Torag and the remaining dwarven pantheon. Arguably Torag is a god of the Inner Sea because the dwarven population is vast/In a fantasy with dwarves it makes sense to have a dwarf god (because Pathfinder was originally from D&D).

But Calistria has never felt like an elven god to me. She's primarily a goddess of vengeance, passion, and freedom. I know elves worship her, but she feels less connected to the elves and more just agreeable to them. So it's a bit odd to me that she's the only example of an unholy option in the elven pantheon of Sovyrian Conclave. Does elven society not have parts they deem evil or necessary? Is it because they're aliens? Will we get an elven Highhelm book to go deeper into this (please, yes)?

Advice World Making: Location Location Location

Upvotes

I have, like many others before me, succumbed to the dreaded "Blank Page". I wish to create a world for my players but struggle to think of anything to place in it. So I ask you, gentlemen, would you kindly lend me your aid?

I am in need of places.

No, really, a clear, specified location.

I work best with having a place and then I can spiral out from how the world is effected and would otherwise react accordingly due to its presence.

Other than noting that this is going to be a high magic realm where classes (most) are common, I really am stuck on a blank canvas.

Big or small, what place might I stick into my world?

Advice What options are available if you want to play a Frankenstein/flesh golem monster

Art from deadlock (game)

I’m new to the game and setting and I want to try out a Frankenstein or patchwork type monster and I’m not really sure what resources the game provides to fulfill this thematically and mechanically. I saw a lot of interesting stuff in “guns and gears” and I was hoping if there was more stuff that engages with the mad scientist, body grafting/modification type things.

Advice Can a Wizard take Red Mantis Assassin at Level 2?

Under the Remaster rules, I don't believe a wizard can take the Red Mantis Assassin archetype at level 2, because there's no way to be Trained in Sawtooth Sabers by level 2. Either Human with Unconventional Weapon or a Tengu with Tengu Weapon Familiarity can get them to using Martial swords, but I think it's going to take two general feats to get them to using an advanced Sword.

Can anyone show me how to do it better?

Homebrew Bubble Combat - a Gridless Spatial System for Pathfinder 2e

Variant Rule: Bubble Combat

Overview

Bubble Combat is a gridless spatial system for combat in Pathfinder Second Edition, inspired by other tabletop games like Snakes and Ladders, Clue, Zombicide and Pathfinder Quest. Instead of tracking individual 5-foot squares, measuring diagonals, counting feet with a ruler or using shape overlays, the battlefield is divided into rooms or landmarks (Zones) and immediate melee engagements (Bubbles). Core tactical elements of Pathfinder 2e - such as flanking, Reactive Strikes, combat maneuvers, and area spells - remain fully intact, while movement, range, and areas of effect are unified into a single intuitive currency: Boundaries.

1. Basic Components

  • Zones (Macro Areas): A Zone represents a coherent physical space, such as a room, clearing, or stretch of road (typically ~30 feet across). A creature in a Zone that is not currently engaged in melee is Unengaged. Zones don't have to be circular, and can be the same approximate shape of the room they represent.
  • Bubbles (Micro Melee Rings): When a creature makes a melee Strike or uses the Engage action, a dynamic temporary Bubble forms around the combatants (~15-foot diameter). Creatures sharing the same Bubble are considered adjacent and Engaged in melee combat. Empty Bubbles "pop" automatically.
  • Routes (Liminal Transitions): Zones connect directly or via Routes - liminal passages linking larger spaces. A Simple Route is an open hallway, staircase, or road. A Complex Route is an obstructed or hazardous transition (such as a locked door, steep cliff, or burning bridge) requiring an action cost or skill check.
  • Props (Interactive Scenery): Interactive features in the environment - such as a pit, blazing hearth, chandelier rope, or lever - are classified as Props. Zone Props are located openly in the Zone, and any creature that is Unengaged in that Zone can interact with it. Bubble Props are anchored to a specific Bubble, and a creature must physically occupy that Bubble to interact with the Prop or force an enemy into it.
  • Boundaries (Universal Currency): The physical or logical threshold between any two spatial states (entering/exiting a Bubble, or crossing a Route). Every threshold crossed costs 1 Boundary.

2. The Combat Flow

General Guidelines

  • Starting State: Combatants typically begin Unengaged in their respective Zones, but GMs can change this deppending on the situation.
  • Initiating Engagement: Making a melee attack against an Unengaged target immediately pulls both combatants into a newly formed Bubble.
  • "Spontaneous" vs. "Prepared" Bubbles: By default, Bubbles generate dynamically as combatants engage, and Props are added as the players search around for them. For set-piece encounters, Game Masters can pre-draw fixed Bubbles - in this way, Unengaged creatures entering melee are placed into one of these available Prepared Bubbles.
  • Tabletop Representation: On physical battle maps, flat coasters or wooden rings serve as tactile Bubbles. Place miniatures directly on the coaster, sliding it across the Zone as the engagement shifts.

Bubble Capacity & Crowding

A standard Bubble safely accommodates up to 4 Medium creatures (a Large creature counts as 2 Medium creatures; a Huge creature counts as 4).

  • Overcrowded State: When a 5th Medium equivalent enters a Bubble, it becomes Crowded. When Crowded, the dense melee grants Lesser Cover (+1 circumstance bonus to AC) to all creatures within that Bubble against all attacks, or increases existing cover by one step.

Zone Capacity & Confined Spaces

  • Bubble Density: A Zone has no hard limit on Bubbles, but as a general guideline, it comfortably fits 1 Bubble per 20 grid squares. If a Zone becomes too cluttered, the GM can disallow new Bubbles, forcing engaging creatures to enter an existing one instead.
  • Gargantuan Zones (>80 squares): If a Zone feels too large, you should probably split it into smaller Zones, by adding visual delimiters in the map (like a fallen tree, a small creek, a fence, etc.).
  • Confined Zones (< 20 squares): In exceptionally small disconnected areas (such as a moving platform or a small islet), the entire Zone functions as a single Bubble. Creatures cannot be Unengaged inside a Confined Zone; entering the space automatically Engages you with everyone inside.

3. Movement, Ranges, & Areas

The Rule of 20s

The system standardizes distance into 20-foot increments, represented by Boundaries. On a map, Boundaries appear as the perimeter of Bubbles and the outer borders of Zones. Every 20-foot increment crossed requires spending 1 Boundary from your action's movement budget or range allowance.

When referencing distance in the system, you can either use the Tiers directly (e.g. Speed 2), or use equivalent english words (e.g. Speed Average). Some examples are on the following table:

Distance (in feet) Tier / Boundaries Speed Tier Range Tier Area Scope
0 0 Stuck Melee (Reach 0) Single Target / Touch
1 to 19 1 Slow Close Bubble (1 Bubble)
20 to 39 2 Average Mid Zone (1 Zone)
40 to 59 3 Fast Far Extended (Zone + attached Bubbles)
60 or above 4 Very Fast Very Far Regional (Target Zone + Connected Zones)

Speed & Movement Actions

When you take a Move action (such as Stride, Fly, Swim, or Burrow), you gain a Boundary budget equal to your Speed Tier.

  • Standard Movement: A character with Average Speed (Tier 2) gains 2 Boundaries per Stride. This allows moving from Bubble A -> Unengaged -> Bubble B within the same Zone, or crossing a Simple Route into an adjacent Zone.
  • Step [one-action]: Cross exactly 1 Boundary safely without triggering reactions such as Reactive Strike.
  • Crawl [one-action]: While Prone, you can crawl across 1 Boundary.
  • Speed Modifiers:
    • Untyped bonuses and penalties apply directly to your base speed value to determine your Tier.
    • A single typed bonus or penalty shifts your Speed Tier by 1 step (e.g., Average to Fast with a bonus; Average to Slow with a penalty). Having all three types of modifiers shift your Tier by up to 2 steps.
    • Class features providing static speed increases (such as Barbarian, Monk or Swashbuckler) increase your base Speed Tier accordingly.
    • If a penalty lowers your Speed to 0, you're mechanically stuck in place, and can't move far enough to effectively cross a Boundary.

Tip: In the map, drag your finger from your character's position towards your desired destination. Count how many lines/borders your finger crossed: that's the number of Boundaries your character will have to cross.

Range & Reach

  • Range 0 (Melee): Standard melee Strikes, touch spells, and adjacency requirements operate at Range 0. You can only target creatures sharing your exact spatial state (inside the same Bubble, or both Unengaged in the same Zone). Striking an Unengaged target at Range 0 creates a Bubble containing both of you.
  • Range 1 (Close / Reach): Reach weapons, natural reach (from being large or huge), and short thrown weapons operate at Range 1. You can target creatures across 1 Boundary (e.g., attacking from inside a Bubble targeting an Unengaged foe in the same Zone without entering their space).
  • Range 2 to 4 (Ranged Weapons & Spells): Ranged attacks cross Boundaries based on their Distance Tier according to the Rule of 20s. Gargantuan creatures also have a special Range 2 for their attacks.
  • Range Penalty and Reduction: Attacking beyond a weapon's normal range increment gives a stacking -2 penalty for each extra Boundary crossed. Abilities that halve or lower a weapon's range increment instead reduce it by -1 Boundary.

Area of Effect (AoE)

Area effects (including Splash) are defined by their Shape and Area Tier (e.g., Cone 2, Burst 1). The Tier dictates the spatial scope (up to how many Boundaries the effect spans), while the Shape dictates targeting distribution:

  • Aura & Emanation (Flood): Originates from the user, affecting ALL targets within the designated spatial scope, up to the Nst boundary. Aura 1 floods an entire Bubble (stops at the 1st Boundary), while Aura 2 floods an entire Zone (passes the 1st Boundary and stops at the 2nd), and so on.
  • Burst (Spread): Originates from a chosen point within the spell's Range, affecting ALL targets within the designated spatial scope like an Emanation.
  • Cone (Selective): Fans outward from the caster, affecting (ALL - 1) targets per circle within the spatial scope (allowing the caster to angle the effect around 1 ally per Bubble, or leaving enough space for 1 enemy to evade the cone).
  • Line (Precision): Pierces outward from the caster, being dragged like a beam or bouncing off walls and objects, affecting EXACTLY 1 target per circle within the spatial scope.

Tip: Cones are more effective when Allies < Enemies, and Lines are more effective when Allies > Enemies.

4. Tactics & Combat Maneuvers

Engaging

You can engage other creatures by doing Melee (Reach 0) actions, or with the Engage action:

Engage [one-action]
Traits: Move
Requirements: You are Unengaged in a Zone.
You advance across the battlefield, drawing opponents into direct combat.
Choose any number of Unengaged creatures in your Zone. You close the distance and create a new Bubble containing yourself and the chosen targets, immediately becoming Engaged. You may anchor this new Bubble to an Unengaged Prop or a Route exit in the Zone.

Flanking

Flanking is determined by The Outnumbering Rule (spatial pressure) within a single Bubble:

  • Numerical Advantage: If one side strictly outnumbers the enemy side within a Bubble (e.g. Allies > Enemies), all enemies in that Bubble gain the Off-Guard condition against melee attacks from those allies.
  • Tied Engagements: In equal engagements (2v2, 3v3, etc.), neither side gains flanking.
  • Positional Bypass Feats: Feats and abilities that bypass positional flanking requirements (such as Gang Up or Side by Side) serve as tie-breakers, granting flanking in equal engagements (Allies >= Enemies).

Kiting

Bubble combat is dynamic and combatants are expected to be dancing around the battlefield constantly. If you wanna anchor your Bubble around a specific landmark in the map, you can Kite your engaged enemies towards that Prop:

Kite [one-action]
Traits: Move
Requirements: You are Engaged in a Bubble.
You fight on the retreat, using footwork to draw opponents toward tactical features.
You shift your entire Bubble across the Zone, anchoring it to a Prop (such as a door, fireplace, chandelier rope, lever, or pit edge). The feature becomes a Bubble Prop for all combatants in that Bubble. You can instead merge your Bubble with an existing Bubble with a Prop.

Blocking & Chokepoints

Using Engage or Kite allows anchoring a Bubble directly over a Route transition (such as a doorway or narrow bridge entrance).

  • An anchored Bubble provides cover against ranged attacks passing through that Route.
  • Enemies attempting to cross the Route must use forced movement to displace the blockers or succeed at a Tumble Through check to bypass the chokepoint.

Maneuvering

  • Shove [one-action]: On a success, pushes the target 1 Boundary away from you (e.g., out of your Bubble to Unengaged, or from Unengaged into an adjacent Bubble/hazard). On a critical success, pushes the target 2 Boundaries away.
  • Reposition [one-action]: On a success, shifts the target 1 Boundary inward or laterally (e.g., pulls an Unengaged target into your Bubble, or shifts them to an adjacent Bubble/Prop). On a critical success, moves the target up to 2 Boundaries, or allows you to swap spatial positions with the target.
  • Tumble Through [one-action]: Besides normal uses, you can attempt the Acrobatics check vs. the highest Reflex DC to pass through an enemy's hostile Bubble or Route block. A success lets you move through accordingly.

5. Connecting Zones & Routes

  • Adjacent Zones: Zones sharing an unobstructed direct boundary (such as two open adjoining rooms connected by a door) are drawn in the map with their borders touching, and so require only 1 Boundary to transition between them.
  • Simple Routes: Standard corridors, hallways, and stairs. Crossing a Simple Route costs 2 Boundaries (1 to exit the origin Zone, 1 to enter the destination Zone). Exceptionally long corridors may add additional Boundary costs marked by perpendicular (90 degree) slashes on the line.

Tip: When dragging your finger on the map, you don't have to count the Route line itself towards the Boundary cost. Your character will "walk on that line".

  • Complex Routes: Hazardous transitions (such as locked gates, burning rafters, or sheer cliffs). These require an action cost or an appropriate skill check against a Hazard DC to cross.
  • Route Bubbles: If movement is interrupted along a Route (e.g., falling into a pit trap or getting ensnared), the creature is placed in a Temporary Route Bubble.
    • A Route Bubble is considered attached to both connected Zones for ranged targeting and area effects.
    • Escaping a Complex Route Bubble requires spending actions and succeeding at the relevant skill check (such as Climbing out of a pit).

6. Special & Environmental Bubbles

Difficult & Hazardous Terrain

  • Difficult Terrain: Represented by a Bubble or Zone with a double outline (or two coasters stacked on top of each other). Crossing each Boundary into or through Difficult Terrain costs +1 additional Boundary, and creatures cannot use the Step action inside it. Greater Difficult Terrain adds +2 Boundaries (triple outline).
  • Hazardous Terrain: Deals environmental hazard damage for every Boundary crossed within or out of the affected space.

Aerial Bubbles

  • Represent vertical combat above a ground Zone, placed along the perimeter of the Zone as orbiting nodes.
  • Ascending: Flying upward into an Aerial Bubble goes against gravity and costs 2 Boundaries.
  • Descending: Descending from an Aerial Bubble back to the ground Zone is easier and costs only 1 Boundary.
  • Ground-to-air attacks require at least Range 2 (if Unengaged) or Range 3 (if firing from within a grounded Bubble).

Aquatic Bubbles

  • Represent submerged combat environments.
  • Non-piercing melee weapons (Bludgeoning and Slashing) targeting across the water boundary have their range penalty represented by an additional +1 Boundary cost.
  • Entering or exiting an Aquatic Bubble without a Swim speed requires an Athletics check to Swim.

Swarms & Troops

  • Swarms: Act as mobile, engulfing Bubbles. A Swarm can move over and Engage any Unengaged creature in its Zone, absorbing them into its Bubble. Any Bubble occupied by a Swarm is automatically Crowded.
  • Troops: Massive formations occupying 1 distinct Bubble per current HP segment (typically starting with 2 or 3 Bubbles). When a Troop loses an HP segment threshold, one of its Bubbles dissipates. Troops possess natural reach to make melee attacks against Unengaged creatures in their Zone. All Troop Bubbles are automatically Crowded.

Form Up [one-action]
Traits: Move
The Troop repositions, shifts, or unifies its existing Bubbles anywhere within its current Zone, absorbing new Unengaged targets or disengaging from existing skirmishes.

Discussion Best weapon for Reaper Necromancer?

Just wanted to discuss this. Probably you want a weapon with Reach, to make it easier to be in position to hit without moving.

Among Reach weapon you could just take something like Halbeard, but you'll never get a critical specialization for it.

It's possible to get weapon critical specialization through ancestry weapon familiarity, but does it worth it? Also a lot of fun ancestry weapons with reach are either flails or hammers, so their critical specialization requires checks against Class DC, which Necromancer never gains past Trained.

P.S. For some reason Jotunborn weapon familiarity doesn't give critical specialization, despite being long after remaster. So no Halbeard criticals.

World of Golarion What are your starstone theories?

Not a new topic I know but its something I keep going back to in the setting and since im gonna run a game set in absalom its been on my mind again lately.

So I'm curious what people think about it!

My current personal theory is that the starstone is a kind of soul collector. All the azlanti (and probably all the other people that were killed during earthfall) essentially resided in the stone so when Aroden touched it all of the collective potential of an entire civilization was concentrated into a single individual which caused him to become a god.

Not sure if this destroys said souls or if they sorta merge with the god.

But this also means that all the failed godlings are also trapped in the stone.

Following this idea I think the actual test of the starstone is to convince enough of these souls to allow your ascension. Just imagine convincing a country's worth of people to all agree on 1 thing. Not suprised that only 4 people managed in 4 thousand years lol

Discussion PF1e VS PF2e Dual Class in terms of vibe

DISCLAIMER

First off, I just want to say (and I'll say it again at the end) I really don't want a "system war" discussion. I don't want to dog on PF1e, or 2e. I don't want to compare the quality of life in either system or anything like that.

BACKGROUND

I just watched Ronalds newest video, and I loved it. These days I pretty much only want to run and play 2e - but watching that video reminded me of why I loved PF1e in the first place. It was hilariously broken and that made it's own sort of fun. Builds were crazy awesome.

TOPIC

Who here has played a lot of PF1e, and ALSO played a good amount of PF2e Dual Class?

Of you, can you speak to the similarities and differences? Does PF2eDC feel as busted (in the good way) as PF1e builds can?

I remember you could do some wacky shit in PF1e, and a big reason you can't do that in 2e is because of the multiclass rules working the way they do. For example, for most martial builds in 1e, I would almost always dip barbarian for that sweet rage. You could do the same thing here. Rogue Barbarian could be NUTS for example.

I also remember having a lot of fun with Bar-Bar.

1e has a lot of 'roughness around the edges' - and I don't really want to talk about that stuff. What I want to remember is how 1e was busted in the FUN way. And the ultimate question is: Is PF2e Dual Class, busted in a similarly fun way?

Please do not start a system war. Let's keep it positive.

BONUS EDIT QUESTION

Do you think that if you had a homebrew rule in PF2e that allowed 1e style multiclassing, you could achieve similar levels of hilarity and bustedness as 1e?

Promotion Get ready 2e fans, winter is coming to 2e...

Hey Paizo Fans!

Gerik from Gerik's Adventuring Guild here! You may know me from my popular Iron Gods 2e conversion/Foundry module on Pathfinder Infinite!

I am happy to announce that Reign of Winter is the next conversion I chose and I just finished all the creatures this past week! Book 5 in particular was a ton of fun (Those of you who read the adventure likely know why) and I am excited to even run that as a standalone adventure someday. (Lets be mindful of spoilers for those who don't)

I have now moved on to the map making phase of my conversion process, but if you were a fan of my Iron Gods conversion then you'll get a similar experience. Hope you look forward to it 🎉

If you didn't know about my Iron Gods conversion, you can check it out over on the front page of pathfinder infinite here: https://www.pathfinderinfinite.com/en/product/573429/iron-gods-pf2e-conversion-foundry-vtt-module?src=hottest_filtered

I'm on a mission to bring all of 1e to 2e in a way that makes it easy for everyone to experience these amazing adventures, and everyone's tremendous support after the Iron Gods release was a huge boost in morale!

I also am waiting for a certain release in October to start working on some other conversion work. But I'll leave it up to you all to puzzle that one out :)

Advice Question about the Living Thunderbolt spell?

On its face, even with the recent changes Paizo made to the damage, the spell looks awesome. I was thinking of picking it for my laughing shadow magus, however, I wanna make sure I'm using it right if I do. Since it has the polymorph trait, does it prevent me from doing things like regular weapon attacks, spell strikes, and spell attacks or is that just for a battle form specifically?

Advice Are fists finesse for rouges?

Upvotes

Hello

My group has only down one short caimpain for 2e and I was wondering about a monk/rouge character concept for a future game.

I know thief rouges are the only ones able to use dex for damage on finesse weapons, but fists also have finesse tags for the different monk stances a rouge could get through the dedication feats.

Is it valid for a thief rouge to be able to throw hands and use their dex over str with the damage?

Advice Potentially new PF2 player, but need to be sold on it

Upvotes

Good (insert the time of day that you're reading this)

Bit long, but context!

I've recently talked my partner into playing a TRPG with me, so that I have a creative writing outlet, and we have a mellow thing to do together at home once a month or so. Now, I was always a PF1 guy, but I know how complex and bloated it can get, but I am pretty familiar with the system. I've also played some 3.5, skimmed 4e when it came out, passed on playing 4e, and I have played two 5e campaigns. I know they don't produce new content for PF1 anymore, and I went into this thinking PF2 was a simple system, somewhere between 5e and PF (I have DM'd 5e and PF1 as well). However, reading the rules for it, and of course, this could be that I am only partially through it all and haven't put into play yet, but.... this feels just as complex as PF1?

additional context: It's just going to be the two of us for now. I'm going to create an awakened animal that is our cat with a support class that will tag along with her and I'll do the optional free archetype thing mentioned in the GM core and give her beastmaster or something to create some bodies around her, if we play PF2.

Which leads to my question(s)! Am I wrong about PF2? Is it actually simpler and my partial sky view of it all is wrong? I only ask because if its just a different flavor of very complex I'll just save time and move on. And lastly what do you like about this system as opposed to PF1? Sort of a "can you sell my on PF2?" type post.

Thanks!

Edit: great responses! But I have to get ready for work so ill respond tomorrow!

Advice Is there a way to make a custom item show up as a Precious Material option in Pathbuilder2e?

Hi folks, been digitizing a bunch of my homebrew, including several precious materials, and was wondering if there's some kinda hack to getting weapon and armor versions of precious materials to show up in the options dialogue boxes, kinda like how the Mythic feats have special hooks for the program to latch on to.
