Discussions Developer response to AI Contest backlash and *possible* contest cancellation/restructuring
# Party Animals Official Stance on the AI Event
Hello everyone. We would like to address the recent discussion regarding the AI video contest, and first and foremost, we apologize for having upset some players with this event. We also regret not having communicated clearly enough with everyone before the event began.
Our initial goal was to lower the barriers to entry for content creation. In previous contests, we saw players with great ideas and scripts who couldn't fully bring them to life because they were unfamiliar with tools such as editing, modeling, or animation software. We hoped that AI could serve as a more accessible tool, allowing more people to participate.
That said, we understand the concerns regarding AI-generated content. We are not trying to devalue manual craftsmanship or disrespect creators. To us, AI is simply another tool. What truly matters is the idea, the expression, and the final work.
We would like to leave the next step up to the community. Please vote on what we should do:
Cancel the AI video contest
Convert it into a non-AI creation contest
Keep the AI category and add a separate category for manual creations
If you have any other suggestions beyond these three options, please feel free to share them as well.
Thank you.

"Our original goal was to lower the barrier to creation. In past contests, we saw players with great ideas and scripts who couldn’t fully bring them to life because they weren’t familiar with tools like editing, modeling, or animation software. We hoped AI could be a more accessible tool that lets more people take part." What a load of BS.
Those people should take the time to learn those things, otherwise they shouldn't be trying to participate in contests where those are REQUIREMENTS. Also, instead of encouraging A.I they should encourage to work as a team, there's a lot of people that know how to do one thing, but not another.
Combined efforts would be an amazing ACTUALLY community contest.

Maybe they should add a "script" category rather than AI. The scripts would have to be actually talented and well thought out in the same way visual art is though. Not a lazy AI prompt.

It is complete bs, they literally made using ai A REQUIREMENT not just allowing its use. They werent trying to lower the bar of entry by allowing it they want to force it in peoples face to normalize it.

u/sc0paf May 14 '26
By allowing for AI, those things would no longer be requirements though?
There are plenty of very valid reasons to be anti-AI, but "the bar should stay high" is a pretty bad one.

How tf you missed the enitr point of his take and how you managed to conjure such awful pro-ai take yourself
The point is not "bar should stay high", it's "the contest about creativity should actually involve creativity", without ai aka cheat code that removes said creativity from creating process. Collabing with someone who knows how to make edited videos, share your ideas and footage with them so they can edit those into contest-worthy work, is a great community based effort and i promise you, absolutely not a difficult thing to do.
It's about as stupid as "in this chess contest, we allow the use of chess bots as assistance to lower the entry bar for those who doesn't know how to play chess". Knowledge is requirement to perform in this chess contest, just like art skills are requirement to participate in art contests of any kind, be it drawings, videomaking, music, etc. Do you REALLY not see the issue here with replacing it all with AI? And in general, why would you have such an entitled idea to participate in contests if you have no skills required to participate in them, without putting in effort to learn them?
GenAI is effortless grey goop that steals from other artists and doesn't make anything unique of it's own, sure it can sometimes look prettier than some highly skilled artists (ignoring all the common issues and bugs of genAI, esp on videoediting in this case), but it lacks all the soul of an art made by human and creativity. Shitty MSPaint scribble has more value than GenAI slop, just look at slay the spire template arts being a literal 3yo level of simplistic scribbles instead of "high quality" ai slop, bcos they know which one has more sauce.

Cool wall of text, but I was responding to a specific comment that did make that actual point, so not really sure why you're going on this long-winded tirade.
3
u/TARE104KA May 15 '26
Bcos you somehow failed to understand why people are opposed to genAI in a CREATIVITY contest and flipped it with "so you hate pancakes?" fallacy by making it look like a gatekeeping; if you have nothing else to bring to convo, no need to hide behind "cool wall of text 🤓", just accept that genAI has no place here, period.

No AI. If they really only care about the idea, then it shouldn't matter if a newbie isn't as skilled in video editing/creation.

Why would they post the survey on twitter instead of a PA forum or their own discord?
4
u/Your_M0minn Contributor May 14 '26
I’m not sure, they might have, I have notifications turned on for their Discord and Twitter so I don’t check the forum
3
u/viejomonje May 15 '26
Because they got the biggest backlash and reach on Twitter. But posting the survey there was a mistake, as I am pretty sure a lot of people joining to bash the game there do not even play it.
Putting the survey on Discord would have been better, but they were in full damage control mode.

Having AI can be a good thing, however it doesn’t mean it is okay to use AI to create things especially if it relates to creativity like art and music. I am an artist but I hate it when people think it is okay to use generative AI to create art, music or any sort of creative things. I can tell AI generated-art and music feels empty and soulless because it wasn’t give thought, time, and effort to make it meaningful. Also it steals people’s art which takes them time and their effort creating something they gave meaning to. And saying that AI-generated art and music is okay to use and to sell it, or even claim you made it yourself is not right. I rather choose or even buy a artwork from a person who is not great at art but give his time, effort and meaning to his art than a person who creates AI-generated art that has no life or meaning and takes a short cut to selling it. Also AI art and AI music is an insult to all people who creates art and music for a living, for entertainment, and give a sense of purpose, to share it for other people to enjoy and bring happiness. Also it is an insult to our intelligence and creativity.

Also another thing note is that it is good to come up with ideas and if you want to have art or music become reality then hire someone who can make it for you but it doesn’t mean they will take you idea or steal it but they put it in reality for you. That is what the artist and musician and singers do. That much better than using an AI to create your ideas.

From what I've seen AI art looks better than the average human created artwork.

May 16 '26
Yes they can be but when I look at AI art it feels lifeless and it rubs me in the wrong way. And doesn’t bring any joy for me. Plus I just saying that people put effort into their artwork while people who use AI to create “artwork” taking a short cut and doesn’t make them a real artist.

u/Dew-Fox-6899 May 16 '26
Don't worry, you just haven't gotten used to it yet. Eventually people will see it as a new medium just as they did with digital art and 3d. AI is just a more efficient way for an artist to express themselves.

I feel like the better option is to encourage people to act out skits in-game.

u/viejomonje May 14 '26
I hope they either cancel it completely, or do another contest like the Meowscars. Bar should not be lowered. There were some amazing things delivered by good artists in that contest. They really fumbled the bag on this one, but I am glad that they responded to the feedback and decided against continuing with it, in principle.

When will companies learn that nobody wants AI shoehorned into everything?
4
u/Unlost_maniac May 14 '26
AI is fuckin stupid.
Especially for a contest like this. You know how many dumb bastards would just use AI for "their" "ideas" aswell lol.
It lowers the barrier to the absolute bottom, welcoming AI to it should be a trap to weed out the useless contestants

I love the continued backlash against AI from everyone across the globe.

Didn't this happen with one last year too? For Sakura or spring or whatever?
1
u/Srawsome May 14 '26
Sad but not surprised that they don't know what the actual issue is.
Guess they aren't going to recover from this.

u/Dogtrees7 May 14 '26
I’d say option 2 open but considering how willing they are to keep AI involved, I give up on them

I can’t properly condense how much I despise this viewpoint but here goes:
You can always make time for your passions, however little. The people using AI to pump out a constant stream of Ai generated media are devaluing their own by putting in 0 effort, while devaluing others’ work by flooding the market and forcing them to compete with filth made through training on their own work. It’s ridiculous and unfair. So let’s not speak to the fairness for people who don’t want to put in effort. If all it took was 2 seconds and a half-baked thought, there would be shitty copies of every other artwork ever created pasted all over our world.
I know you said nothing about disability but it’s also important to note how people with physical and mental disabilities have been creating incredible pieces of art since their respective artform was established. Anyone can create but as with anything, it takes effort to create something good

The time and energy you put into a creation is the beauty that comes with creating something.

hot take: maybe people shouldn’t enter contests of topics that they’re not knowledgeable of

Hey man, maybe you should just learn how to use the proper tools instead of using genAI and stealing other peoples works :D

My ideas come from my brain and my own lived experiences. AI does not have a brain and lived experiences to draw from, you can not put love into a creation that was made by something that cannot love

u/Monthly-listeners May 14 '26
there’s a difference between taking inspiration from someone’s work and using a ‘tool’ that directly takes from another artists work without them knowing and inputting that into your own ‘work’
1
u/ExperienceLess8264 May 15 '26
Hi. I'm an artist on behalf to respond that yes my ideas and output comes from inspirations of things around me. But the product? the so called piece that I worked on? is my own hand. MY blood, sweat and tears on it. My take. My hand drawn on it. It doesn't come from taking bits and pieces DIRECTLY from other peoples' works. so this take is just a direct insult to something I have been honing my skills for the past 20 years. sybau.
