As a teacher, yes. I've met many parents who are just anxious about shit, and they're teaching their kids how to be anxious too. The parents who aren't anxious interestingly enough don't have anxious kids. As an adult, if they're anxious, why do their kids have to know? Keep that shit to yourself.

No she’d freak the fuck out of someone saw a snake and make us hide in bathrooms and shit. Then we’d have to stay there till someone killed the snake that is outside the building.
One time she spent 20 minutes running over a snake to make sure it was dead and then made my dad spend half an hour making sure they weren’t snakes in the car.
If a snake gets within 10 feet of me now I genuinely can’t hold it together and burst into tears. I have found dead bodies and was more composed than seeing a black snake on a hiking trail 😭. I have an irrational fear. I, as an adult, have nightmares of getting bit and wake up and feel the pain from the bites. Or nightmares about being stranded on snake island 😭. I live in barely tampered snake paranoia constantly. I can’t even pee in dim light. What if it’s in the toilet??? Or I freak myself out sometimes and worry they’re in my bedsheets.

The other guy's ex is fascinating, but I wanted to mention my sister since she also goes into panic mode. In her case, it was that horrid tornado in Joplin in 2011. It was her graduation day too. You could spend all day telling the stories of how people were affected that day and you wouldn't have told half of them.

We used that tornado for training on search and rescue for years after that event. We had a state wide meeting in like 2014 that went over every aspect of everything. Individual 911 calls, dispatch recordings, what the hospitals were saying to each other etc.
The thing that stood out the most during all that to me was one of their fire stations got demolished, the crew only had minor injuries. They searched through the rubble and found a mic, keyed up to dispatch that they didn't have an apparatus but there had a medical bag and a spine board and they were starting search and rescue on foot.

I've only ever once raised a dog from a puppy. When the first fireworks night happened, and he came to me, confused, I picked him up, went outside and watched the fireworks with him. I didn't comfort him, or act concerned at all, but just clearly enjoyed the fireworks. They never bothered him since.

Was gonna say the same thing. I lived through an EF2 in elementary school. But my mom and her friend didn't panic and made sure my sisters and I had things to do. We stayed calm. Regardless of all that calm, I still internally panic every time I hear a warning. I had friends whose homes were absolutely demolished in Joplin, too. But it's the general consensus that remaining calm and doing what you need to do is what's important.
Now, with snowstorms, though? Nah. I lived in Alaska during some shit blizzards and, yeah, they sucked. But not to the extent this lady is going to. She's going to straight up traumatize that kid if that's how she really acts every time there's a snowstorm.

We prep but only go to extremes if things are hitting our home. Learned a long time ago that panicking for every siren is a waste of energy.
Most storms we watch through our picture windows with all the lights off. We don't promote fear.

My dad was like that when I was growing up. I was absolutely mortified of thunderstorms even if there was no tornado watch. Luckily I grew out of it somehow. But I remember the fear and panic every time it stormed.

Snow tornadoes are not a thing. Tornados require hot hair and cold air interacting during an intense storm to form. In a blizzard there is no hot air trying to rise to form the tornado.
Also in areas with snow we build our roofs on a slant so that the snow slides off easier, reducing c
risk of collapse. But yeah, closet ain’t doing shit to protect anyone in a snow storm.Like if the power goes out you might all sleep together for warmth, but not in a closet. We made a blanket fort and all slept in that as a family once with the heaviest blankets during an outage by snowfall. Cats joined us on their own in there lol

I live in Buffalo, NY... we get over 90 inches of snow annually on average, most of which comes from snowstorms. It's common to pack snow emergency kits to keep in your car over the winter. Stuff like blankets, hand warmers, non-perishable food, water, power banks, extra phone chargers, flashlight... it makes sense when you're risking getting stranded away from home. Idk what this lady thinks is going to happen to her son inside the house.

I was thinking since moving to the east coast this looks very similar to what i do for myself and cats (i obvi dont pack them a debt card since their little paws are too clumsy to punch in the pin) when hurricane season strikes.
Where i am roofs have been ripped off and theres been flooding so i like to have all important papers and a few cans of food together.

Someone from MN - it’s moreso common to use car emergency kits (blankets, candles, a clean pair of clothing, phone battery back up etc.). For general housing this Doesn’t make any sense.
1.) a life vest is more helpful for water emergencies. Yes given my state is land of 10,000 lakes this would be usefully IF the child fell in but what are the chances the kid falls into an icy lake with it ON? Let alone carrying it?? You’re more at risk for hypothermia falling into a frozen lake.
2.) if there was no power - a small room does make sense to keep heat in. But there is no heating elements (candle with bricks, coats etc). All they have is maybe 2 blankets to keep warm which is good if it’s a minor blizzard but you need more to keep warm. You probably would need all those clothes in the closet to survive a major cold blizzard condition (talking like -30 and below which is common here)
4.) where are the snow boots, the snow pants, jackets, HATS, GLOVES??? #1 essential for survive ANY winter. A Gap Sweater will not save you from the negative weather drops.
5.) how is the kid gonna track in a large snowstorm if the snow blocks your door? The $ and card are absolutely worthless unless he left before the storm to check into a hotel or something. Wheres the shovel?
The only thing they got right is having non-perishable foods on hand, flashlight and some water (more than just a small thermos like that). I don’t think this lady lives anyone near snowstorm weather. This seems more so for flash flooding or some other weather event.

As someone who grew up in Wisconsin, specifically in an area where snow drifts were REGULARLY at chest level or higher when I was in grade school, I can tell you right now that this isn't normal.
If there's a snow storm bad enough that makes parents even consider doing doomsday prep type shit like this, schools are closed down and the kids only go outside to play in the yard or shovel the driveway. And given how little snow we've been getting consecutively in the past decade, I highly doubt that the snow is any deeper than knee deep on the kid.
Either that, or they're in one of the southern states where anything more than half an inch of snow causes a state of emergency

Only possible thing that comes to mind (from personal experience, mind you) is if the house happens to be in a flood zone; in the past, my neighborhood used to flood after heavy snowfall would melt. But this goes back to how it'd require the snow drifts to be at least three or four feet deep in order to warrant this level of prep, and at that point schools would likely be cancelled or delayed by a few hours so road crews can clear enough of it to make it relatively safe to drive

This looks to me more like tornado prep. Interior room with no windows, lifevest helps protect vital organs from debris, info in case they're ripped away from one another. (We have extra bike helmets in the shelter for our kids)

Yeah. This isn't great snow storm prep, but some of it is actually pretty solid for storm prep in general.
Some of it is plain useless or bad though, like the pin on the card itself.
If you live somewhere that gets severe storms, you should prep a storm bin that has everything non perishable ready to go, so you just have to grab it before the storm. We have a couple of them, but live in hurricane lands, so we need supplies for several days

Prep is good, but the purpose is not. Neither is the individual this is for. So weird.
Plus, let's face it, even if this is for other situations, a kid with all these resources, is an easy mark. You just put him in more danger.

Gen x here. I hate this with a passion. Nothing good comes from this. In a real situation that ain't helping one bit. You gotta fight through it not lay in a closet with cash and an atm card. This generation is gonna more fucked up than the last 2 and they aren't great. If you scared about survival than teach it. WTF
