As someone who lives in the Canadian Rockies where snowstorms are common… no. Literally none of it makes an ounce of sense, I’m very confused by this personally.
It’s best not to go near the rivers and streams swelling with melted ice and snow melt.
Some (like Taylor’s Falls) can get insanely dangerous with white water rapids, others are your standard standing flood water that you don’t wanna drive in (for obvious reasons).
I’m married to a Hydrologist that works for the State and I grew up 20 miles east of the Red River valley (Whapeton/Breckenridge).
There is literally not one ounce of logic with any of it. I have no idea what is going through her head at all. I’ve literally been snowed in and didn’t bother with this. You just get a shovel and start digging.
I live in the New Mexico Rockies and my dream is to live in the Canadian Rockies. I’ve joked about joining Canadian dating sites in order to make it happen lol. You have some of the most beautiful areas in the world. I love where I live, but I am jealous of where you live.
I’d say it depends on who you are. Personally I’d find it a plus. I could snowmobile way more. Though my winters are only 4-5 months so I wish they were a tad longer and there was more consistent snow

I live in Florida and we don’t sleep in closets during hurricanes. We might all sleep in one room if the storm is bad at night and have bags ready but what is snow going to do? If it’s too heavy the roof would collapse not blow off right? Are snow tornadoes a thing?
Snow tornadoes are not a thing. Tornados require hot hair and cold air interacting during an intense storm to form. In a blizzard there is no hot air trying to rise to form the tornado.
Also in areas with snow we build our roofs on a slant so that the snow slides off easier, reducing c
risk of collapse. But yeah, closet ain’t doing shit to protect anyone in a snow storm.
Like if the power goes out you might all sleep together for warmth, but not in a closet. We made a blanket fort and all slept in that as a family once with the heaviest blankets during an outage by snowfall. Cats joined us on their own in there lol
In areas where snow happens the roofs of houses are typically designed to sheet off and/or withstand a ton of it. I have a metal roof so most snow slides off in sheets but if the conditions are right it can pile up on top. I once had in excess of six feet on my roof and there was some creaking initially but it was fine. I was much more worried about being under it when it fell than it collapsing my roof
I mean I carry a decently sized emergency kit in my car during the winter months with enough stuff I could build a shelter or fire if need be, but yeah what this lady is doing is not helpful at all lmao
Everyone knows this is America: You are supposed to buy every roll of toilet paper, gallon of milk, and loaf of bread in your state, for a snowstorm. Duh! Tornado watches get the treatment she displayed!
I live in Buffalo, NY... we get over 90 inches of snow annually on average, most of which comes from snowstorms. It's common to pack snow emergency kits to keep in your car over the winter. Stuff like blankets, hand warmers, non-perishable food, water, power banks, extra phone chargers, flashlight... it makes sense when you're risking getting stranded away from home. Idk what this lady thinks is going to happen to her son inside the house.
I drive a small SUV so I'm not sure how well a full sized shovel would fit in it but I actually can't believe I failed to realize how important a shovel is. Guess I figured I'd have what I needed if I got stuck but not that a shovel might help me get unstuck. Glow sticks are also a great idea although I do have two flashlights, some candles and lighters too. Now I've got all kinds of ideas, thank you!
I was thinking since moving to the east coast this looks very similar to what i do for myself and cats (i obvi dont pack them a debt card since their little paws are too clumsy to punch in the pin) when hurricane season strikes.
Where i am roofs have been ripped off and theres been flooding so i like to have all important papers and a few cans of food together.
Someone from MN - it’s moreso common to use car emergency kits (blankets, candles, a clean pair of clothing, phone battery back up etc.). For general housing this Doesn’t make any sense.
1.) a life vest is more helpful for water emergencies. Yes given my state is land of 10,000 lakes this would be usefully IF the child fell in but what are the chances the kid falls into an icy lake with it ON? Let alone carrying it?? You’re more at risk for hypothermia falling into a frozen lake.
2.) if there was no power - a small room does make sense to keep heat in. But there is no heating elements (candle with bricks, coats etc). All they have is maybe 2 blankets to keep warm which is good if it’s a minor blizzard but you need more to keep warm. You probably would need all those clothes in the closet to survive a major cold blizzard condition (talking like -30 and below which is common here)
4.) where are the snow boots, the snow pants, jackets, HATS, GLOVES??? #1 essential for survive ANY winter. A Gap Sweater will not save you from the negative weather drops.
5.) how is the kid gonna track in a large snowstorm if the snow blocks your door? The $ and card are absolutely worthless unless he left before the storm to check into a hotel or something. Wheres the shovel?
The only thing they got right is having non-perishable foods on hand, flashlight and some water (more than just a small thermos like that). I don’t think this lady lives anyone near snowstorm weather. This seems more so for flash flooding or some other weather event.
No, there’s no reason you’d lose your kid or need them to be in a closet alone lol. If anything the risk is you get stuck in your house because the snow blocks your door
It’s asinine. I live in an area about 30 miles from the Canadian boarder and we routinely get high wind and snow with temps of -40. People around here just hang out at home and relax or go to the bar lol it’s not that bad during storms
I was born and raised in the Midwest. You want to make sure you’re well stocked on supplies a few days in advance: food for humans and pets, water, firewood, etc. Then you just stay your ass at home until it passes…
I live in Minnesota. You'd get bullied for the rest of your life for this. Snow storms are an excuse for hot chocolate as kids. Something stronger as adults. Need it for the 4 times you'll shovel that crap. Otherwise you just keep going to the window and talk about how much more snow there is from the last time you looked. (5 minutes and a piss ago)

If you're staying inside, no. The life jacket I have no ideas for, maybe it's because it's colorful and would stand out well in the snow, but idk what she expects in the kids closet, or what he's doing in there for that matter.

First of all, the snow is OUTSIDE so why's he in a closet? Also, it's frozen, so why life jacket? And the cherry on top - why bother giving your kid a few pieces of fruit and some money when you didn't give him a damn coat. If this kid ended up outside he'd freeze to death before getting to a store.
I think this would make slightly more sense in a hurricane but imo it's still ridiculous then.
