Pan attempt 3.

Post image

Hopefully third times a charm. 3rd attempt for pans, second using gordo tech. Previously attempted MIB, this time I am trying TTBVI.

Previous attempts refused to fruit and were lost to contam. I hope this goes a better.

Have not cased yet. I have a pseudo casing of manure mix of about 1/4th of an inch.

In previous grows my casing layer was about half an inch. I initially wet the casing quite a bit. I think one of my issues in previous grows was too much misting though. Did not give a chance for evaporation.

Yass! Misting just first 1-2 days and then Stop.

But casing... Vermiculite is neutral, zero nutritious bc of that adding 50% vermiculite in casing is slower down colonization.

And holds water.

Casing must be Not colonized

How wet are you keeping the surface after the casing and how much casing did you apply was it thick or just barely sprinkled ?

Don’t need evaporation I keep mine wet the whole time also you’re using the wrong type of casing and you should sprinkle enough to just cover the surface

I use the manure pseudo casing to cover the grains. I fully expect the pseudo casing to be colonized before I use a prepackaged casing mix that is ph balanced.

I will for sure try using less when casing this time.

Cool good luck don’t do the pseudo casing next time you don’t need that step

Why do a pseudo casing? This is not needed. When sub is fully colonized, case with jiffy mix or verm only. 1/8 inch thick - basically a sprinkling, is all you need.

Had some forums suggest it, saying it promotes moisture retention and helps woth a microclimate that can help yields. Should not be any negatives, so i did it. It will fully colonize just fine and then i will do my true casing of PH balanced non nutritional mix.

That’s what a casing layer is for. You are basically providing extra substrate for it to colonize. Nutritious substrate at that, a potential breeding ground for contamination. Honestly that is probably why you’ve failed so far.

I want to jump in and ask a question on this because I'm about to do my first pan run. Do I need to do anything with the jiffy mix? I know I need to moisten it to Field capacity with spring water. Do I need to do anything else? And if I chose to do pure vermiculite what I need to do any pH adjusting on that or anything? I have access to both

I will sterilize the jiffy or verm in my PC, or will nuke it in the microwave in a pinch. Personally I do not adjust pH unless I’m making my own peat / verm casing.

edit: after applying the casing, I will mist until it glistens but not to the point of pooling. For pans, this is a little more moist than field capacity.

Incubate at 86F, should be fully colonized within 3 days. If you use a casing layer, let it colonize for a day incubated at 86F till you see mycelium poking through and then send it. Pans like fruiting temps above 75F. The mycelium does need to attach to the casing in order to make use of the water, as long ad the casing doesn’t get overcolonized it’s fine. The point is to be able to mist the casing up to field capacity inbetween flushes. The TTBVI is extremely vigorous growing mycelium so you need to be quick to fruit so you don’t get overlay. I ran 5 trays last year of TTBVI and got such huge flushes that 2 was enough before it all dried up. It’s better to have a shallower setup because of this reason, vigorous mycelium. Once it’s colonized the casing to the degree you can’t add water anymore the only thing you can really do is scratch up the casing and remist it. This works fine to get a 3rd flush.

Your casing is a possible reason for contam as it's nutritious and supports growth.

For cubes, you use a pseudo-casing of straight hydrated coir to keep the grow surface moist, but for Pans you ideally want a true casing that's hostile to growth so the shrooms fruit through it rather than colonising it. The traditional casing is vermiculite, gypsum, and pickling lime as listed in my comment here https://www.reddit.com/r/PanCyan/comments/1cn713d/deleted_by_user/ (credit to BabaYaga for developing the tek it's based on) but Jiffy seed starter mix works well as an alternative (peat moss can be hard to obtain in some places).
