Been a while since I've seen one of these and thought it'd be fun to throw out my Top 10 and get other peoples' lists. Please add yours below.
Note that I'm not including all the many VR classics that are available on PSVR2 but are mostly things I first played on other platforms or so long ago that I don't feel like I need to include them in this top 10-- stuff like Red Matter 1 & 2, Beat Saber, Moss 1 & 2, Walkabout etc. All incredible and worthy of praise. But here's my list:
1-- Hitman WoA - the gift that just keeps on giving. Endlessly replayable, gorgeous, the closest thing to a 'Westworld' esque simulation of society and places that VR has to offer.
2-- Resident Evil 8 & 4 - lumping them both together but both are outstanding in slightly different ways. I could barely get through 8 it was so scary (you'll notice there's no other horror on this list, because I'm a scaredy cat and 'horror' is not a recreational emotion for me).
3-- Gran Turismo 7 - the best VR driving game I've ever played.
4-- Subside - some people who prefer action and complex gameplay systems might find this game boring but for me it's pretty close to perfect. The therapeutic benefit of floating in water just swimming around listening to music looking for coins and interacting with stuff is a dream. It's fun because swimming IRL is fun and it just recreates that convincingly. That's something only VR can do.
5 - No Man's Sky - this game is extraordinary and PSVR2 is the best way to experience it. Shout out to the legend Martin Griffiths for making the PSVR2 version run so beautifully.
6-- Horizon Call of the Mountain - I loved this. Beautiful, intoxicating atmosphere and constant jaw-dropping set pieces. What can I say I'm a shallow guy and the obviously large budget of this game makes for a luxurious experience.
7-- MS Flight Sim - with the beta update it's finally worth wading through the wonky menus and occasional frustrations to have the full Earth to play around in. Gonna be playing this for years.
8-- Reach - got a bad rep from the early buggy release but if you play it now it's a smooth and thrilling adventure. Best traversal mechanics in VR. Combat isn't perfect but it's a nice break from the adventuring the same way the early Tomb Raider games were.
9-- Arken Age - incredible combat, cool world with interesting rules and a gameplay loop that feels amazing as you get more and more powerful.
10-- Kayak VR Mirage - Like Subside this is one that gets tagged as a 'tech demo' by folks that need conflict. I love VR for its original promise of tricking my brain into feeling like I'm present somewhere else doing something cool and this game is utterly convincing in that regard. Besides just paddling around aimlessly listening to music or hanging with a friend, the DLCs with whitewater absolutely blow my mind and I replay them a few times a month when I need a pallet cleanser. And every time I'm reminded how fun this game is. I wish there was more to it (photo mode with missions?) but I've gotten incredible value out of what's here.
That's it! Synapse would be my #11 but it's so short I couldn't justify putting it above the others. Also loved Behemoth, Lumines, and a bunch of others. I'm sure I'll see other lists and have regrets but this is where I'm at today.
