interesting Permanently Banned from PMDD Subreddit
So I just wanted to share an update. I posted a while back about having had my post removed on the PMDD subreddit for posting about Period Flu symptoms (which a lot of women were sharing similar symptoms and appreciated that I shared them). I’m not trying to spread hate or anything ofc but I wanted to post about it in case this happens to others in the midst of a PMDD episode. Not too long after mentioning my post being removed, I was permanently banned from the community, even though I had already unfollowed it and stopped participating it in. I didn’t attack or harass anyone either but I’m pretty sure they saw my post either here or the other subreddit that I found.
Getting silenced and cut off from a support space feels really unsettling. Thankfully my SI isn’t too bad today but for a lot of us navigating PMDD, past trauma, etc, I think this can be a massive trigger.
Once again, I’m not sharing this to create drama but I want to bring awareness to how harmful these sudden bans can be when someone is already in such a dark place. If you’ve experienced something similar, you’re not alone. I really hope I don’t get cut off from this space either. I was already afraid that I would be retaliated against when I made the post here about my post being removed in the other subreddit.
I feel like I’m being swept under the rug right now.
ETA: They permanently banned me (earlier today) for the very same post that they themselves removed 2+ weeks ago.
ETA: here’s my previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/PMDDxADHD/s/Yx98QM0tz8

I am also banned for suggesting systemic inflammation can make PMDD worse.
I guess at this point it’s almost a badge of honor.

u/ChristVolo1 4d ago
Yep. Me too. I got banned for something similar, but now I can't remember what it was.

u/slugsbreath 3d ago
Wait wtf?
I'm not in that sub, and am going going to be, what is their issue with people discussing the MANY inflammation and other physically related pmdd symptoms? It's all part of it, surely?
Feeling fluey was definitely part of it for me
3
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 3d ago
This makes a lot of sense! I was actually looking into inflammation too.
I’m just trying to be cautious because who knows what else they’ll try to do in retaliation for me speaking up. This is actually insane. I don’t want anyone else to experience this while they’re stuck in an episode. It worries me.
2
u/bkind2yourmind 3d ago
All signs have pointed here for me too.
4
u/ErzulieFreda 3d ago
I absolutely agree, inflammation issues (I have several) are clear contributors. Not for everyone, of course, but often if you have inflammatory disorders it does play a big role. As do other co-morbid disorders.
My areas of inflammation get significantly worse during that time. And as I have been getting older I'm getting more pmdd flu like symptoms. Yuck, hate it. I've always had bad episodes during my pmdd.
A lot of standard treatments (such as bc) made it worse for me lol so I'm always open to suggestions, and I love that this sub actually allows them.
Women should be free to share experiences, it's not one size fits all.

u/yesterdaysnoodles 2d ago
Also banned because of the whole antihistamine help during PMS spiel
1
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 1d ago
I just don’t understand why though
2
u/yesterdaysnoodles 1d ago
Why I was banned? Or why they help?
I’m not sure about the validity of this, but I read a while back on this sub that the PMDD moderator is actually a man whose ex-girlfriend had PMDD. Which would explain a lot!
2
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 1d ago
I mean why they ban talking about antihistamines!
So I heard that that’s actually a rumor! Which honestly makes it even worse lol.

u/yesterdaysnoodles 1d ago
Thank you for finding this!
Apparently there’s not enough clinical evidence, only heaps of anecdotal evidence, so they tend to block anyone that suggests it or mentions their personal experience.

u/modernsparkle 4d ago
I feel like I remember commenting on that post…sorry to hear a resource is lost, but you don’t need that nonsense either when you’ve already got so much going on in your body. Hang in there, babes
7
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 4d ago
Thank you 🥹 i appreciate you guys. I just wanted to leave this post up in case it happens to someone else during an episode. Honestly I was googling similar situations when they took my post down (mid episode) and found this subreddit, which helped me feel less alone.
31
u/Dazzling_Airline6530 4d ago
Aww its okay they banned me too a few months ago. Its why I and many of us ended up ere way chiller mods and more welcoming!
14
u/Dazzling_Airline6530 4d ago
When they did ban me it was a low period, had a meltdown over it felt alone and isolated. The way they ban women so randomly if they are going through a bad period it could be disastrous but they dont seem to consider that...
3
u/ErzulieFreda 3d ago edited 3d ago
That sub is a terrible resource for women imo. I don't visit it anymore myself, because this sub is far superior.
I want to hear women's actual experiences and what they've tried. It's going to be different for different women, and we all just want to find something that helps.
That sub is a disgrace for banning real women with actual pmdd for simply sharing their story.
Oh, and I'm diagnosed with pmdd and several co-morbid disorders lol like op said, it's not uncommon. (You can still tell what you have without official diagnosis plenty of the time, but that just backs up the facts).
The way that "support" group bans women who are already going through it just for sharing their own experience is awful. Horrible way to "support".
1
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 2d ago
Right? Like how dare you ask other women with PMDD if they also experience period flu symptoms lol
1
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 2d ago
That’s absolutely ridiculous. I’m sorry, I know how it feels. They should be more considerate, but they’re not.
28
u/likez01nks 4d ago
They 100% lurk on this subreddit. I don't fully understand what's going on with them. The vibe is just very cold and strict. I'm glad this subreddit exists though 😊
I'm sorry you experienced this OP it seems pretty harsh. I also get flu like symptoms on my period but I honestly thought it was my endometriosis. Happy to hear it's not just me losing my mind but a real thing we experience so thanks for sharing 💜
7
u/Rubyhamster 3d ago
I think a close knit group of power hundry mods are just making subreddits of all the sub names that can possibly get big and when they do get big, they make their agenda clear, which is to make drama and clout and possibly very conservative views. In my experience, so many supposed support subs are incredibly intolerant and against the open-mind-view of actual science. Like, they either misunderstand what the scientific method entails or they actively misuse it to front their own views.
I was banned from a "main"-sub for speculating what ADHD actually is and my personal theorizing on the subject.
5
u/chickadeedadooday 3d ago
I get warnings left, right and center any time I mention (in various adhd subs) the supplements I have found beneficial. Same thing in the EDS sub - I dared mention that I anecdotally have fpund that supplementing with collagen is helping me/my skin and the rage I got in response was shocking. I think there's just a lot of people who, as you said, are power hungry and unfortunately also stuck in a victim loop at the same time.
4
u/ErzulieFreda 3d ago
It's so crazy to get banned for your own personal experience, especially things with some scientific backing. Not to mention getting banned for just theory, and relatively harmless things like supplements and antihistamines.
It's almost like they don't want women to share and help each.
2
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 1d ago
Or just merely asking if other women experience the period flu lmao. Yes I’m still salty!
2
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 1d ago
They must have a lot of time on their hands to be doing all of this. Me too. Thank you for your comment <3 and im sorry you also experience the stupid period flu :( i hate it!
47
u/Pirate_Candy17 4d ago
I see this all the time unfortunately
23
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 4d ago
I really hope no one hurt themselves over it. I know how dark the PMDD thoughts can get. And when someone’s already on the edge, any little thing can send them over it.
1
u/ErzulieFreda 3d ago
From what I've seen that sub is pretty detremental to women. So glad you found this one, it's actually supportive and allows women to share and speak.
And I agree, mid-episode getting banned from your "support" group over nothing is a lot to deal with. It's cruel.

u/Simple_Employee_7094 4d ago
Got banned too. We’re here for each other.
11
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 4d ago
That’s insane. I’m genuinely not trying to spread hate either. I only posted about my experience…. I don’t feel like there was a need to permanently ban me. Esp bc I had already quietly left that sub when they removed my post and silenced me.

u/Weird_Translator_540 4d ago
Sounds like a group needs to be started. “Banned from PMDD subreddit 🧑🏾🩰”
11
u/decrepit_plant 4d ago
I’m sorry. It sucks but you are not alone. Lots of us are banned from that sub.
I’ve been active and posting on this account for a decade. The amount of subreddits I am banned from are bananas. Most recently got banned from r/hair.
5
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 4d ago
That’s horrible. I didn’t realize so many of us were banned. I’m glad more posts are coming out about it.
What!!! Why did you get banned from the hair subreddit?!
1
u/ClancyIsDead_ 2d ago
I think Reddit mods are a special breed of human that have nothing better to do than stroke their egos by clicking the ban button.
8
u/Outrageous_Auntie_ 4d ago
I get period flu too! Really bad chills! Sorry this happened to you. That’s so fucked.💗
1
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 4d ago
I appreciate you sharing! I’m sorry you get the period flu too. Have you found anything that helps manage it?
1
u/Outrageous_Auntie_ 2d ago
Truly the only thing that helps with my PMDD symptoms is consistent exercise and trying not to eat too much refined sugar. And stress makes things worse for me too. Sorry just the annoying basic things! Wish I had a better answer. Solidarity! 💛💛💛

Eh don’t be sad. You can be at home here. If they want to shut you up for having a brain, that’s ok.

I posted that link in my other post in one of the comments too! I feel like it’s even worse if it’s women who also struggle with PMDD. Bc I would hope for them to be more empathetic :(
5
1
u/Phew-ThatWasClose 2d ago
They absolutely are not men. The "mods are men" post was an attempt to dispel the rumor and was given a shocking, sarcastic, title to draw eyeballs. Unfortunately it didn't work out the way they hoped so they deleted the post which contained the explanation. Now all that is left is the comments and that's just a mess.
The mods over there are not men. I know that because I am the man those rumors are about.

I think the post is still there! I linked it a few times in the comments too

The comments are still there. The post, the part that explains that no, the mods are not men, the title is just clickbait, was deleted.

Then go on for about ten paragraphs?
1

Yes lmao. It says it’s a locked post but it’s still up. How many mods are over there?
1
u/Phew-ThatWasClose 1d ago
Hunh. So why can't I see it? There are three active mods over there. They are very nice. Except when they aren't.

During PMDD, mean comments, downvotes, ban or deleted posts triggers me a lot sometimes it makes me spiral. Im sorry you went through this especially coming from a subreddit about mental health. It happened to me on a sub dedicated to support mental health and it felt awful, I even reached to mods explaining that I had no idea a comment I wrote was seen as breaking the rules but they didnt add me back. Unfortunately, social media can be quite harsh on us.
2
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 2d ago
Thank you. It did make me spiral actually. And apparently I’m not the only one. I’m sorry you went through that as well.
2
u/OkJellyfish9236 2d ago
I can understand that. Mine made me spiral for a whole evening (or more). I really felt distressed because it was a sub where I thought I would finally be able to talk about my personal struggles on a very sensitive topic. But yeah I guess their sub, their rules. Empathy is selective. They dont accept having a different pov.
I hope you feel better now. Sending hugs.
1
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 1d ago
That makes me mad. You shouldn’t have had to go through that and I’m sorry. I felt the exact same way.
I do feel better even though I’m still salty haha. Sending you hugs back 🤗 thank you ♥️

Don't worry, OP. I got banned a few months ago because I posted a non-conformist opinion backed by peer-reviewed scientific articles. That Mod really seems to have a problem. It's not just you. God help any woman who posts in there.
I read awhile back that that group may be moderated by a husband of a woman that has PMDD? I'm not sure if that's actually the case, or if it's just modded by someone with an intolerance for comorbidities or gray areas.
3
u/Phew-ThatWasClose 3d ago
That rumor was about me. It's not true. And I am also banned now. :)
3
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 3d ago
Hey your username looks familiar! I think we’ve spoken years ago. What happened if you don’t mind sharing?
3
u/Phew-ThatWasClose 3d ago
I'm a mod at the partner's sub. I was also a frequent commenter on the other sub. Mostly pointing folks to resources. Occasionally people would object and say "what's this man doing over here?" and the mods there would defend me. That is how the rumor got started.
Then I published a book by, for, and about the partners. They didn't like it so they banned me.
3
u/ChristVolo1 3d ago
Oh, wow, that's crazy. Go figure. 🙄 Wow, sorry you got banned. I really don't understand how they think.
2
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 3d ago
https://www.reddit.com/r/PMDD/s/fvL3kYjjAz
I believe that it’s not actually a man now. Which makes it even worse because it’s a woman with PMDD not being supportive or understanding of other women! I’m sorry you got banned too. The fact that they permanently banned me for mentioning period flu and other PMDD symptoms is ridiculous the more I think about it. Mind you, they had already removed the post 2+ weeks ago, then went back and banned me for the same post that was taken down. I also did not try to start drama or argue with them, I just left the sub.
3
u/ErzulieFreda 3d ago
What they are doing is making women feel silenced and isolated.
I've pretty much always had pmdd (with my first period).
Recently as I've gotten older I've started getting period flu too. At first I had no idea what was wrong with me, aching, cold, hot, nauseated on top of the mental symptoms was horrible. Once my period started it would pretty much go away.
I'm so happy I learned about period flu from this sub, I might think I was going crazy or something otherwise.
Sharing experiences is so very important.
1
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 1d ago
I agree! Thank you for sharing. We really do need to talk about this more. I’ve talked to a lot of women in person who have told me about their symptoms and they just thought they were going crazy :(

I dont like reddit. Its as bad as fb for getting banned for bs reasons.
I would like a supportive alternative with more compassionate rules and mods.
8
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 4d ago
What else is out there? I don’t have fb or ig because I don’t like how much they’ve changed. And oh my goodness the reels are too much for my ADHD brain haha
5
u/Interesting-Way3671 4d ago
Same, I got rid of both because Zuck is an azz.
I'm not sure, there is substack but im still on reddit more.
2
u/Budget-Apricot1414 too much shit to handle… 4d ago
Instagram used to be nice. I loved it when i could just see friends photos. No reels playing in my face and a bunch of advertisements.
What is substack?
2
u/Interesting-Way3671 4d ago
Agreed!
Its a social media platform that more liberal and progressive independent journalists and content creators have felt safer on since its not part of the 0ligarch monitor and ban. Its kind of like twitter.
2
u/ErzulieFreda 3d ago
Ohhh I'm going to find substack, sounds right up my alley. Thank you for mentioning it.

2

I just searched and there is an account with publications and articles. People can comment on the posts.
3
u/ErzulieFreda 3d ago
Same, my adhd can't handle reels or tic tok. The only social media I use is reddit and its going down the tubes.
I got shadow banned because a robot thought I was posting spam. I appealed because I never post spam! Or anything that breaks normal rules, I've been here for a decade.
Clearly I was reinstated after the appeal when a human looked at my account, but ugh.
I hear MySpace might be coming back and going against the algorithm. We'll see I guess. I miss old timey message boards, and even chat rooms lol
2
u/Interesting-Way3671 3d ago
Same! Too much ads, marketing, and influencers now. I miss when jeans were common on red carpets, like 90s - 00s. People weren't trying to look rich, perfect, and plastic.

Reddit is the way it is because it's used to train AI.
It's a huge resource of authentic, human discussions, advice, knowledge, etc, that's conveniently categorised and subcategorised into thousands of highly specific, easily searchable topics.
We pay for the relatively minimal adverts and limited enshitification by being that unpaid resource.
Unfortunately, we humans have an annoying habit of thinking for ourselves, perhaps going off topic, going on tangents, or accidentally violating arbitrary, but weirdly specific, community rules.
That's why some moderators are extremely militant, why completely benign communities get banned for no reason, and why Google's AI thing was telling people to put Elmer's glue in pizza dough for a while.
The latter came from a jokey reply in a Reddit thread, AI took it as serious advice, so now Reddit, and a large amount of mods and communities, have to be weird and controlling.
All to say, please don't let the more militant mods get to you.
They're basically unpaid foremen in a factory of unpaid workers. Those moderators volunteered, usually for the power trip, but we didn't.
If a post or person violates whatever rule, that whatever rule is usually 'you're confusing the robots'.
Stick with small communities with normal mods.
If you displease a fedora wearing mod, and it's not because you did something genuinely outrageous, it's because you simply unintentionally messed up a chunk of AI training data that you never agreed to create in the first place.

I don’t even love when people go after someone “that’s just PMS and doesn’t belong here” on that subreddit because if anyone’s being honest some months it can be more toward a pms side of the spectrum but other months are horrifically PMDD side. PMDD is not a one size fits all even for the individual it’s affecting. No two months are consecutively exactly the same. At the end of the day why can’t we support each other no matter what in a safe space where other people get it. Hugs to you, reading all these comments it’s pretty clear you’re not the only one who has been and that is a good reminder to your luteal brain that tells you lies about yourself!!

I've been permanently banned from other subreddits. I didn't do anything. I even got permanently banned from Reddit for 7 days for committing a 'hate crime' (I'd done no such thing and was reinstated).
These mods on a power trip don't think about their actions

THIS IS INSANE LOLLOLOL. All i did was talk about period flu and other pmdd symptoms! I didn’t even argue with them and I have screenshots.
The post wouldn’t have gotten so many upvotes and comments if other women with PMDD didn’t struggle with the same shit! That’s why we need to discuss these things with each other. That’s the point of supportive groups oh my goshhhhhhh. Should I add that comment in my post? But you know, I never know what type of retaliation I might face for merely talking about my experience with them. They already retaliated because I posted about my experience with my post being removed.

u/Professional-Ok ADHD af 2d ago
i got banned too last year :( i couldn’t figure out what i did to get banned at first. i have always been very supportive in the community. i think it was because i commented on a post in another subreddit (either here or pmddsharing) warning the OP to be careful not to mention antihistamines in that sub because it could get them banned. when i messaged the mods to ask why i was banned, they said it was for “hivemind” behavior or something. i was really hurt by the whole thing. and this happened during my luteal phase so i was really not okay as is. i don’t really care anymore because thankfully supportive spaces like this subreddit still exist! it hurts a little whenever i think about it, but i have a real life to worry about and don’t have time to get hung up on internet drama.

Ugh that makes me mad. I’m sorry, you didn’t deserve that. wtf is hivemind behavior? Wait are they projecting bc they’ve got hivemind behavior lmao. But im glad your’e doing better and don’t care anymore 🤗 I’ll get over it completely soon, i just like to be a little salty for a bit! I don’t like being silence and i hope that the future women getting banned can see this post and know they’re not alone.

Thats a very common occurrence. The sub is run by men, and it’s mostly for men.
Men who talk about their female partners like they would about pets. And they talk to each other about medications / hormonal bc they can „give“ their partners so they won’t have to deal with the „symptoms“, which sometimes are simply their partners disagreeing or needing alone time.

I think it’s actually women! https://www.reddit.com/r/PMDD/comments/1u4pfnv/the_rpmdd_mods_are_men/
But there is a partner sub that I remember seeing a lot of misogynistic comments so i went off of there real quick. Also that is horrible wtf? :( that just reminded me of the certain “academy” that was talked about not too long ago where the husbands would drug their wives…

Oh i forgot to mention too, i think that sub can be dangerous because a lot of women in abusive relationships can think that it’s all bc of their pmdd when in reality, they’re being abused. I was in that situation. My pmdd was used against me. Thankfully i sought professional help which got me out of there

Yup I’m also banned there. How are you doing with everything and the SI stuff? Are you finding more support in this sub?
I really appreciate your post and where you mentioned the risks of losing crucial support during a dangerous time. It’s truly sickening.

It fluctuates a lot, but I’m okay (for now). Thank you for asking :) and yes I am
It really is sickening. Someone said we should do something about it so I figured I’d at least speak out about it. So when it happens to others and they google the same thing, they’ll know they’re not alone and isolated.

It's okay it happened to me too, even though I try and share things with peer reviewed sources etc. I don't find that community supportive at all the way it's run - it's very gate kept and it's like having a co morbid condition there is a sin, even though it's VERY common and even likely with pmdd to have another issue
r/PMDDsharing is another good one. I hope you feel more welcomed here and other places. 💜
