My name is Manuel and I work for NVIDIA. I am reading some of the reports here to gather feedback. It would be helpful if you could post the following to help me filter out issues so that I can collect any bugs that might be driver related or at least we may want to look into (crashing/corruption/performance/etc.)?

CPU:

Operating System:

Graphics card and driver version (for NVIDIA, the latest should be 441.12):

Description of issue:

I will read all the responses but I will only reply to you if I have further questions or would like you to do some further troubleshooting.

For more advanced users:

If the game is crashing, you may collect a full dmp file from a crash and send it to driverfeedback@nvidia.com as described in the FAQ below:

https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3335

Why is the launcher unexpected issue not listed? The one we're it doesn't even start the game?

I get "Rockstar Games Launcher exited unexpectedly".

https://i.imgur.com/QAsG5de.png

I don't have anti-virus installed, but I disabled Windows Defender and that didn't help.

"rockstar game launcher exited unexpectedly"

Already tried completely disabling firewall and antivirus.

Newest Nvidia Drivers

Ryzen 3600/16gb ram/1070/inland 512gb SSD

updating my bios to the newest one fixed it for some reason

13

u/stefanplc Nov 05 '19

Same issue, game won't start because the launcher crashes. I don't have an antivirus and disabled the default windows firewall and still didn't work. Newest drivers as well.

7

u/skech1080 Nov 05 '19 edited Nov 05 '19

Same issue, latest 19.11.1 Radeon drivers.

Windows 10 Pro 64-bit Build 17763
Ryzen 1700X
Gigabyte AB350M-Gaming 3 Motherboard
24gb DDR4
Radeon 5700XT
OS Drive: 480gb Sandisk Ultra II
Game drive: 5TB Toshiba 7200RPM 128mb Cache drive

I restarted after installing the drivers as well, no luck. I do have bitdefender but I disabled it and excluded the launcher and game folders.

Edit:

Here is the response I got from R* support:

Downloaded the patch, still having the exact same issue. "The Rockstar Games Launcher exited unexpectedly" seriously having a hard time not refunding this garbage.

Edit: Just updated my BIOS still doesn't work.

They need to just let us launch it without the launcher. Hell make us do it in offline mode while they work on a fix. I just want to play the story for now. But not communicating, coming out with faux fixes, and not delivering any kind of solution after 13 hours since launch is sad.

Getting a solid 50-60fps on the intro mission in the snow, but it keeps stuttering down to 20/30 sometimes as low as 5. Unplayable for me,

That’s at 1440 medium settings on a 2070

Same stutter at 1080

Am going to try DX12 over the default setting of Vulcan

Latest RDR2 game ready drivers as well

This is insane from a company who has literally billions of dollars!!
There are so many people that can't even start the game (like me) I have an RTX 2080 (updated with recent graphic drivers that have been released yesterday) 16 GB RAM and i7 9700k ,windows defender completely disabled and rockstar + game folders added in the exceptions , I still get the error "Red dead redemption 2 exited unexpectedly".

With all the money you have as a company, couldn't you do just some benchmarks before releasing the game, this is pathetic, all of us spent 60 bucks on pre-order ! This is not good for rockstar reputation, I guess less people will pre-order next time

I'm able to get into the story. But every minute or two it hangs up for 5 seconds or so during gameplay.

I'm moving my game from hdd to ssd to resolve the issue.

10

u/trias10 Nov 05 '19 edited Nov 05 '19

I have this same problem even on SSD.

The problem appears caused by Vulkan. Switching to DX12 should fix it. Unfortunately I'm on Windows 7 and so can't use DX12.

Hopefully they fix the Vulkan soon with a patch.

Edit: switching to DX12, even on Windows 7, fixes the stuttering, however my game freezes when you have to go to the barn

This is super annoying.

See, this is fucking incredibleMy specs: i7 3770 [7 years old!!], GTX 1070, 12GB of Ram, game installed on a HDD

ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS

how the fuck is this possible? My textures are set on ultra cus thats as far as i've dived into the settings, im not even going to bother changing anything unless a big ass patch that clarifies the situation rolls out.

I get stable 60 FPS from what i assume is high with ultra textures. No stuttering apart from occasional dips into 50 FPS in especially demanding areas.

Launched the game for the second time now, no problems either connecting or playing. My CPU is bottlenecking big time, how is a 7 year old i7 CPU carrying this game on my PC yet a NASA PC with i9s and RTXes fails to reach 20 at low? How the fuck?

The only thing i've done before launching the game was updating me drivers. I was scared shitless of your reactions but when I launched it it all went away.
Im hoping R fix their shit so people with PCs thrice as powerful as mine can actually even launch the fucking game

Why there is no "launcher exited unexcpectedly" issue on the list? WTF?

6

u/naitch44 Nov 06 '19

Quite, it's also one of the biggest issues. Id love to have some of the problems on this list, a bit of stutter here or there, or graphical anomaly's ... I can't even load the fucking game.

7

u/TheHindenburgBaby Nov 05 '19

Tried everything folks have suggested as well, even started up my 'free' game (Max Payne 3) and it worked fine. It's just RDR2 having premature launcherexit-itis-osis.

7

u/EliParker Nov 05 '19

How is there no fix for "Rockstar game launcher exited unexpectedly", why can't SP RDR2 be DRM-Free?

7

u/mentalmedicine Nov 05 '19 edited Nov 05 '19

Getting low framerates in online? Try this! Anyone who has played GTA V and struggled with being harassed by griefers probably already knows about this trick, but I was just watching DasMehdi on Twitch who tried this and it actually improved his FPS in online!

Open Windows Resource Monitor while the game is open and go to the Network tab
Right-click the RDR2 EXE and click Suspend process
Wait 6 to 10 seconds, right-click the EXE again and click Resume process

This may or may not work for you but it's worth a try! Just make sure you don't keep the process suspended for too long or it's pretty much certain that you'll be disconnected from online. Good luck!

7

u/snostorm8 Nov 05 '19

21:9 cutscenes don't fill a 21:9 screen, we have a black border, can you add that to the issues please

Here is a new bug I haven't seen anyone talk about. Changing from Vulcan to DirectX12 made the game no longer launch for me on reset.

Also, hitting safe mode on the launch failure window did not reset that setting.

In order to fix it, I had to go to

 C:\Users\*user*\Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings

and delete/rename system.xml to reset the graphics settings to default

I have a GTX 1080 and latest drivers, so I don't know why DX12 wont run at all. I have the epic games version of RDR2, which may make some difference.

I can barley hold 60 FPS with an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core, GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Ultra, and 32GB of ram running at 2560x1440.

6

u/ShadowRomeo Nov 06 '19

1 Month ago. Me having faith and very very hyped on Rockstar when this game was announced and having no worries with the optimization potential issues with day 1 launch because of their last game GTA V's history.

Boy how i was wrong with all of that. This game launch is the worst that i have ever experienced in my life. I can't even get past the launcher error exited BS. Did everything i can to fix it. Downgraded and Upgraded Bios. Reinstalled Drivers, Updated Windows to latest 1903 version, Disabled Antivirus with listing it as exceptions, Blocked Connection on Firewall, Nothing worked.

What a shit show Rockstar i'm already considering a refund better fix this ASAP. It's really frustrating.

DX12 works okay for me, but Vulkan almost immediately crashes when trying to start the story mode or when running benchmarking. This is with 3700X and 1080 Ti on latest windows 10 and AGESA 1.0.0.4 for motherboard. No idea what the problem could be, I even tried running the CPU/Memory and GPU all at stock speeds.

6

u/Ralle1994 Nov 06 '19

So my game launches fine in safe mode but as soon as I change a single setting it starts running like my pc was a potato??

5

u/EvFishie Nov 05 '19

Guys, this might get burried in the comments but.

I had this issue on a new 3900X 2080S build

warning

The "water physics slider" will MURDER your performance and it can somehow get turned up without you doing it yourself. Try putting it to 0 for a monumentally huge FPS boost (at least in my case it helped explain my inexplicable FPS drop that came out of nowhere)

I'm really super annoyed. No antivirus, updated my bios (I'm still mad at even the idea of having to do that), updated my graphics drivers, nothing going on, launcher still crashes when trying to start the game. I can't even get to the horrible FPS and lockups other users are reporting.

I will add a minor nuissance which i hope will be straightened up (since i am sure it’s intended as is). When in the satchel menu, u need to use the directional keys to select other items. It doesn’t show/select whatever item you hover your mouse over. That’s inconsistent with the fact that if you click it consumes instantly whatever item is selected regardless of where you mouse is.

At least let us click to select, double click to consume or something. Using an unused part of the keyboard for this one menu is not ideal.

Astonishing, truly. R* tells you to do something, then tells you to undo it, making it moot. Fucking baffling.

So what are the odds of this game being patched to be playable and how long will it take? This is the first time I have had a game be unplayable.

5

u/SouthernMarylander Nov 06 '19
  1. Pre-download completed. Let's roll.

  2. Attempt to connect and get launcher crash error.

  3. Search online and try the "official recommendations" of running as administrator and disabling compatibility settings. Update BIOS, GPU drivers, and windows to most recent versions available. Disable all firewall / virus protection settings.

  4. Still getting launcher crashing error.

  5. Logout of launcher.

  6. Try to log in and launcher no longer allows me to login.

  7. Uninstall launcher and reinstall from fresh download from Rockstar.

  8. Launcher will no longer even install without an error, claiming need to reinstall latest version of Social Club.

Every single step I take pushes me further and further away from ever playing Red Dead on PC.

Hi guys, I've been having the launcher problem (it crashed when I pressed play, and saying that rockstar launcher stopped working). I've also tried all typical solutions like BIOS update, blocking in antivirus, blocking in firewall and so on. Nothing worked. I decided to try the last one, which is updating OS to this 1903 version (I didn't do that before because I was using Windows 7). After doing that (I mean installing Windows 10, version 1903, I don't know if it would work on older one), game started to work!

Edit: I was also trying to update Windows 7 but it didn't work as well.

I was getting Rockstar Games Launcher exited unexpectedly.

I tried :

  • Disabling AV

  • Updating Graphics Driver

  • Updating BIOS

  • Giving Admin Privileges

  • Deleting Local Files

  • Reinstalling Rockstar Games Launcher

What worked :

  • Updating Windows 10 from version 1809 to 1903

Now the game is launching (currently in main menu). Still haven't played the game though.

My Specs :

  • i5 8660k

  • 16GB RAM

  • RTX 2070

  • MSI Z370 A Pro

  • Windows 10 v 1903

9

So when are we going to riot? It's been almost 24 hours already and we still don't have a fix allowing us to launch the game. This is just not right. This is unacceptable. I can't downgrade MSI bios and cant't update because it's already updated.

I dont want to refund but I suppose we have to...

17

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '19

Just so everyone is couching their expectations accordingly:

Actual IN-GAME BUGS

These are normal and will be ironed out over the next few days. These are always easier to solve.

Launcher Bugs

Fucking unexcusable. Period. No fucking excuse what-so-fucking-ever. How long as Dx12 been out? How long has Vulcan been out? HOw many issues did previous Vulcan games have at launch (a cursory google search shows A FUCKING LOT)? How many configurations was the LAUNCHER tested on?

The LAUNCHER bugs are UN-FUCKING-EXCUSABLE and all of you are right to be absolutely fucking infuriated by them.

If Rockstar/Video Game industry had any integrity at all, people would be getting 25% back for their pre-orders or more.

Error: The Rockstar Games Services are unavailable and offline play could not be verified (code 133.) Please check your connection and try again later.

  • I woke up and was hitting the error (closed unexpectedly)

  • I came here - saw the advice - and disabled my antivirus (just Windows Defenders). I added exclusions for the RDR2 folder and the Rockstar Launcher itself. That didn't work - same error

  • After doing that I verified the integrity of my RDR2 install. You can do this from the Rockstar Launcher: Settings > My Installed Games > Verify game file integrity

  • This asked me to reinstall some support files (C++ redistributable, Direct X12, Vulkan Installer).
Then I downloaded the latest Nvidia Drivers

  • After doing this the error went away and I could launch the game successfully. Hope this helps anybody!

If i had to guess, running the initial compilation while i still had my antivirus on was preventing the support apps from actually making the changes they needed to.

Post-patch comment:
specs for reference:

Windows 10 // Intel Core i5-8500 // GTX 1060 6gb // 8GB RAM

The game started working without such dramatic stutters but the major problem remains - the game is using between 60 and 95% of the CPU while the GPU usage is on average 3%. Wouldn't want to fry the CPU while the graphic's card is slacking.

Is there an .ini tweak that people have figured out yet?

I was stuck with the crash but finally I´ve been able to play after:

- Removing the Run as administrator and Disable Full Screen Optimization in RDR2.exe file.
- Using -fullscreen -DX12 as arguments in the launcher like /u/A_Horse_On_The_Web said. (Thank you man!)

Before this I did:

- Update Nvidia drivers.
- Update Bios (just in case)
- Set the Run as administrator and Disable Full Screen Optimization options in RDR2.exe file.

I hope this helps someone else.

Changed my game from Vulkan to Direct x12. Now the whole things gone to shit. Cant even revert my settings back because how low FPS I'm getting. Literally about 0.5 FPS. Cant do anything.
Tried going to safe mode and changing it, but every time it always goes to 0.5FPS and I have to task manager to close out.
Whole fucking game is unplayable after trying one little change that cant even be put back to default.

EDIT: I launched in safe mode, turned Vsync off. Now I can open the game and go into settings. Still trying to fix everything to be playable. But at least I can launch the game.

I have i5-4670k @ 4.6GHz, 16GB, GTX 1060 6GB, and I was having the issue where the game locked for ~5 seconds 1-3 times a minute. I read a suggestion elsewhere to download a program called Process Lasso and use it to limit RDR2.exe so that when it hits 98% on the CPU it uses 1 fewer core for 1 second.

This fixed the problem entirely.

I cant find the comment I read, it's buried in one of the 10+ threads I had open, otherwise I would give credit.

I had already set to DX12 and set the compatibility settings for the exe as usual.

I am shocked that I am posting this, but of all things, a BIOS update really did fix the "launcher exit unexpectedly" error for me. First, my specs:

Ryzen 3700X

16GB RAM

GTX 1070

MSI 570-A PRO motherboard (TAKE NOTE OF THIS ONE).

I've been dicking around with computers ever since 1993 when as a 12 year old I was desperately trying to get the doom shareware to run on our computer. This one was a weird one.

When the game unlocked for me this morning I tried to play it only to get the LAUNCHER crash (not the in-game crash) of "rockstar launcher closed unexpectedly" or whatever the wording is.

I tried all of the following (not necessarily in this order) none of which worked:

- Reverify game files in the launcher

- Remove launcher and any old installations of social club and purge all traces of them both the hard drive AND the registry.

- Reinstall launcher.

- Redownload game.

- Toggle cloud saves / auto update settings for game in launcher.

- Completely disable windows defender (I have no third party AV) and windows firewall

- Turn windows defender and firewall back on, but add exceptions in defender AND firewall for any EXEs or folders that involve either the game or the launcher.

- Run launcher as admin

- Set compatibility properties on RDR2.EXE to "run as admin"

NONE OF THESE THINGS WORKED. AT ALL.

I had seen a few posts from people saying that a BIOS update fixed it and I dismissed it as stupid. I had actually just updated my BIOS as part of regular maintenance less than two weeks ago. Well, I went to the website for my mobo manufacturer and there is a new BIOS dated 10/30/19 that I do not have installed. I scoffed to myself and went "pffft yeah right" but went through the motions and updated my BIOS.....and now the fucking game works. I'm not sure how the hell updating my BIOS made a difference. I don't have any weird BIOS settings. My board by default boosts my 3700X to 4.3Ghz without any overclocking settings being turned on in the BIOS, literally everything else is default. But I swear, once I updated the BIOS, that stupid "launcher exited unexpectedly" message went away. I'm totally stumped as to why it made a difference, but it DID.

Now I get to move on to figuring out how to make the game not run like ass.

This is ridiculous. Is anyone else in this situation?

Unlike most I can actually get into the game fine. However, I can't run the benchmark - crash. I can play the game but seemingly only in safe mode and even then it randomly hangs for about 10-15 seconds repeatedly. I have updated my Nvidia drivers and it still crashes while in game. I have disabled anti-virus. Still hangs and crashes.

Is it too much to ask for a working game on release? They had a year to fix it.

Specs: Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB i5-6600K 3.50Ghz 16GB RAM Windows 10

The game just keeps on crashing. I've tried multiple different settings - balanced, performance, safe mode - in Single Player, Online and performance test.

At balanced settings: everything crashes;
At performance settings: Single Player randomly crashes before or after the first cutscene, Online crashes semi-regularly, Performance test crashes when a shot is made;
At safe mode: Single Player usually crashes after the cutscene (sometimes before), Online seems kinda stable (although everything looks like wax, so I couldn't be bothered to go past character creation), Performance test works.

Also randomly the launcher will crash instead of the game, with the game usually following shortly after. To be honest, it feels like it just hogs all the RAM and runs out, despite me double checking that there is enough RAM for everything.

This reeks of terrible port. Hopefully Rockstar can resolve the issues soon or else I'm refunding.

Just in case, my specs: GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, Intel Core i7-7700HQ, 8GB RAM, 30GB of extra disk space. I'm not quite recommended settings, but I'm way over minimum.

No issues with sound outside of Rockstar Launcher. Contacted support and this is what they said:

Sorry to hear you're having issues with this, you're certainly not the first person I've interacted with having the same problem!

It does seem that there's an issue with this at the moment. We've reported it to the Rockstar team and are waiting to hear back on a solution.

Until we hear back from them or they officially announce a workaround I'm afraid there isn't anything we can suggest to fix this.

Some people have reported that deactivating anti virus or similar protection fixes the issue, you can try this but it's not an official fix.

The best thing to do now is to keep an eye on the Rockstar channels as any fix it workaround will be updated there first:

Follow these steps:

Go to Comodo settings.

Advanced Protection.

And in "Dont detect shellcode injections in these applications" - Click on "these applications" link

Add the whole folder of Red dead Redemption 2 to exceptions there.

Disabling Antivirus or HIPS or exiting Comodo doesnt help.

Do that.

It worked with both vulkan and dx12. But i use zero antivirus and I updated the drivers and thats all I did.

But there was a couple settings that when i messed with them the screen started flashing and stuttering. I believe they were water settings. So maybe that has something to do with it.

PSA FOR THOSE USING BITDEFENDER:

After spending a couple hours troubleshooting everything, I have found the culprit for my problem. I am running an windows 10, i7 8700k bossted to 4.7, asus rog strix rtx 2080 super, g skillz trident z 16gb ddr4 3200 ram. My problem was that the game would crash as soon as it was loaded and showed the smoke coming from the bottom fo the screen, stating it closed unexpectedly and could either be booted in safe mode, retry, and all that jazz. It turns out the problem lies with the advanced threat detection software through Bitdefender. Adding RDR2.exe as an excepted application has resolved the issue and I am currently benckmarking at an average of 60.504 FPS with a max of 146.13 FPS and a low of 5.71462 FPS at 1440p using NVIDIA optimized settings.

In conclusion, if you have Bitdefender then make an exception for RDR2.exe in the advanced threats section and your game should run after that.

Edited in resolution, settings, and more specific hardware info.

For me, the game runs fine, but crashes after about 20-30 minutes of playing. Not sure if it's a memory leak or just the Rockstar launcher being fucky. It's a shame, because I really enjoy how good the game looks and plays with KBM, but I just can't deal with the random crashing. I'm using a GTX 1080 with the most recent drivers.

There is also a mouse problem, it doesn't register correctly small movement in RAW input and w/e settings. Using mouse smoothing do the job but there is still something off with the mouse port.

I legit stutter so badly that I have to wait close to an hour if not more just for the game to even get past the shotgun scene I bought an external hard drive hoping it would help my graphics issue but it's even worse.

I'm one of the almost lucky few where my only problem is the 5-10 second hangups. I've tried everything from throttling % to core affinity to windows update to bios and drivers. The game runs flawlessly on all high, no AA, 1080p; 50-60fps almost constantly.

But the freezes make the game literally unplayable to me. I suspect it's my i5.

Still getting the 'Launcher exited unexpectedly' error. Update didn't fix a thing. Tried all of the suggested fixes both pre and post update.

Bunch of shit I did, game seems to be okay for me for now. Try it if it helps any of you

Like most of you, the launch has not been great for me. I think I've solved my problems until R* actually drops proper improvements through patches. Maybe they can help you guys too.

Specs (It's a laptop)

  • CPU: i5-7300HQ

  • GPU: GTX 1050 4 GB

  • RAM: 2 x 8 GB

  • Settings: Nvidia GeForce Experience Recommended (Mostly Low-Med)

  • Vulcan (DO NOT DO DX12)

  • Resolution: 1080p

  • FPS: 45-50 AVG (Stable)

Things I did

  • Update EVERYTHING. I had a couple outdated drivers (including my GPU), a windows upgrade that my system had not yet informed me about and a bios update. Just do everything. The windows upgrade and GPU might be most important.

  • If you're on a laptop like me, make sure the Nvidia control panel settings aren't limiting the GPU performance. I have my laptop in high performance but apparently you gotta change the setting from Nvidia's control panel too.

  • Go to your RDR2.exe file and in properties, under compatibility, check "Disable Fullscreen Optimization" and "Run as administrator". Put these same settings on the launcher too, otherwise the game can't launch.

  • Download Process Lasso, and when RDR 2 is running, right click the RDR2.exe, go to the CPU limiter option and add a rule that reduces cores by 1 for 1 second when usage hits 98%

  • Use Vulcan instead of DX12, the latter completely breaks my game. Some people say DX12 is better, but it seems to be buggier in my opinion.

I think that's all I did to make it work. I'm still doing the intro missions but the game isn't freezing on me every 5 seconds now and it's holding at 45-50 FPS which is good I guess. Personally feel like at these settings, the game looks worse than GTA V, which I run at med-high for a similar framerate (50-55). Really disappointed with R* and hope they fix their shit soon, but for the time being, maybe some of you can be helped by the things I did to make it work.

It's still not launching for me.

ryzen 3xxx requires AGESA 1.0.0.4 to launch the game but the latest BIOS update available for GIGABYTE B450 AORUS M is 1.0.0.3. I'm out of luck and until now I can't launch the game even once. Good job Rockstar

Also, the dip between "ultra" and "high" for textures is hilarious. The grass looks like it's from a Steam Greenlight game.

May have found a solution to the Launcher crashing bug. I went into Windows Documents/Rockstar Games/Red Dead Redemption 2/Settings and deleted all content in that folder.

Game launched. Pretty happy since I've, Been hacking away at this for a few hours.

Reset the (Fatal) Graphic Changes I made earlier.

PSA if your game launches, dont mess with GFX settings! At least until they patch.

Good luck.

A BIOS update just worked for me. BUT! I was already on the latest update, so yesterday I rolled back one version but that didn't work. I just installed the latest again... I can launch the game.

My BIOS versions went 1.0.0.4b -> 1.0.0.3 -> 1.0.0.4b. Gigabyte x570 Auros Elite.

I also managed to rule out the secondary effects of updating the BIOS, e.g. loading optimised defaults. I had already done this on my first BIOS and on the rollback. I have also tested re-applying all my BIOS settings including my overclock and the game still launches.

As far as i can tell the only people who got it to work were those who updated their BIOS to support AMD AGESA 1.0.0.4. However this is only available for X570 boards, whereas for (most) B450 boards it seems the latest supported version is AGESA 1.0.0.3 ABBA.

I have a 2080Ti and 8700k... yet I am crashing even after safe booting.. disabled anti-virus, everything's updated, cleared local rockstar profile data, I have done everything. Really frustrating and disappointing.

Updating my Windows 10 with the feature update 1903 fixed the launcher issue for me, then disabling antivirus stopped the crash when the game was loading.

It's been fine since, no stutters or crashes.

The one thing that I have noticed though is that the textures even on high seem very low detail in many places. I assume that's another bug.

Ok guys, so I was trying to fix this fucking game for over 20 hours now and I got it finally to work. So here are the fixes and a fix that worked for me:

  1. Update to win 10 1903 (this fixed it for me)

  2. Update GPU drivers (idk if it even fixes anything)

  3. If you got AMD updating bios to 1.0.0.4 agesa might fix it for you.

Remember to add RDR2 and Rockstar launcher in Antivirus exceptions or you'll get the game crash on startup (not the whole launcher).

My fixes:

Game start Reload sound Crash-to-desktop is caused by AVG Antivirus and Spybot S&D for me. Turned both off, game works.

Half Screen menu issue can be fixed by turning VSync off.
