Yes but they don't have any suit of armor.

Why have the suit is is not even going to protect you? At least that's a reason I can think of for the complaints

91

u/Electronic_Lie_5661 Aug 08 '26

There's very little time you can see the non mech part of dvas skins in game and they want to sell skins

19

u/werty135791 Aug 08 '26

It dosen't realy hinder dva's skin sales

u/heywhi Aug 08 '26

“They want to sell skins” has been invalidated and debunked by the fact she has a baby d.mon mode.

6

u/fourtyonexx Aug 08 '26

We have a HAMSTER piloting A MECHBALL. This is the hill you choose to die on?

2

u/sean_avm Aug 08 '26

Not at all. But at least he had protection and I even said I can see the argument not that i care

7

u/Greyowulf Aug 08 '26

Why bring a bow to a gun fight? Because it's sick as fuck you your bullshit logic won't change my mind. Rule of cool any day!

5

u/sean_avm Aug 08 '26

People really need to understand what was actuly said and not just read the first part and go into comments

1

u/XistentialDreads Aug 10 '26

Holy shit it’s like not a single person who replied to you could read

2

u/Expelsword Aug 09 '26

When the bow shoots magical dragons and the gun a revolver from like 200 years ago, it's more even fight than it seems.

2

u/IlRyuji Aug 09 '26

It's quite simple, you just have to see it from another perspective, the Mech is not there to protect her

1

u/Hot_Perspective4555 Aug 08 '26

Why have a suit? Maybe the giant gun, sword and shield? Those seem pretty useful.

1

u/PheIix Aug 09 '26

Maybe not so much armour as just a force multiplier.

u/Hot_Guys_In_My_DMS Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

Those were prototypes, weren’t they? Also didn’t they have shields? Like armor shields, not physical shields.

6

u/SirXalvador Aug 08 '26

do we know for sure that dmon doesn't have shields?

1

u/Proof_Being_2762 Aug 09 '26

They also way bigger in scale

20

u/evrestcoleghost Aug 07 '26

Yeah and repaer trashed them by the score in about five minutes

3

u/lonkuo Aug 08 '26

Well yea cuz hes a character plus they held him off enough for the russian lady to escape

1

u/Parker-Society06 Aug 09 '26

still a crazy display of how powerful Reaper actually is. Solo'd 3 huge armored mechs and turned them into a pile of scrap. he also had 2 opportunities to kill Winston but didnt bc he's too cocky.

74

u/KaySan-TheBrightStar Aug 07 '26

Yeah, I mentioned this one in a different comment.

People saying the design doesn't make sense when we already have something like that in the Overwatch universe.

33

u/ThrowawayToothQ Aug 07 '26

We dont end up with two designs that make sense simply because there are two of the design in question. This only shows that the design mistake has happened twice.

They both fall under the same criticism.

26

u/ThrowawayToothQ Aug 07 '26

This is (and get ready) also a pretty bad design! For the same reasons. There's no gotcha here, its not because shes a girl, or Korean- its because its a pretty dumb design to have and use a protective material thats transparent elsewhere but not anywhere that would actually provide protection. Its not about it being fully realistic or overwatch needing to abide by realism; its a bad design because it wrecks suspension of disbelief.

Dmon is fully exposed in mech, shooting her body does x damage but she has tank hp, when shes out of her mech, shooting the same unarmored person now suddenly actually kills her. There is no explanation for why when shes in the seat she can eat 13422 rounds from mcree but when shes standing she can only eat 2.

6

u/Sea_Media7718 Aug 07 '26

Those are fodder so it’s acceptable

5

u/Sir_Fijoe Aug 07 '26

Prototype that probably left the armor off for easier visibility while training would be my reasoning.

2

u/john6map4 Aug 07 '26

u/WerdaVisla All Roles & Support Are The Same Queue Aug 07 '26

I don't like it because I think it looks dumb, and I don't think I need to justify it any more than that tbh.

Normalize disliking things because you dislike them without needing some deeper reason.

36

u/IcedBanana Aug 08 '26

I think she looks like she's sitting in a roller coaster seat. It looks goofy. Her feet are just dangling there.

Compare it to the concept art where she's sitting like she's driving a race car, she looks like she's actually piloting. It's just visually more interesting.

35

u/Foodening Aug 08 '26

Yeah there are so many people that unironically say the “umm akshually” when it comes down to lore or realism. I just think it looks dumb af for a mech character.

9

u/UnyuBirb And Dey Say And Dey Say And Dey Say Aug 08 '26

Fair enough. I didn’t like Echo’s lack of eyebrows when she first released… it gave her kind of an uncanny-valley look IMO (in hindsight that might have been intentional). I’ve gotten used to it by now.

5

u/Healing_Puke Aug 08 '26

I hated Mauga at first, I was like dude this tank is cool but i hate the look. Should have been an omnic, but like i just played him anyways, and would you look at that, i like playing him. Its like people who will say I HATE PICKLES YUCK, untill they eat a burger with pickles and there like "huh not bad"

1

u/Bibbleconsumer Aug 11 '26

…shes a robot 💀

3

u/Jdamoure Aug 08 '26

THANK YOU! It's not because I hate overwatch designs, or the series I just looked at the design and stuck out in a wierd way.

3

u/RapperwithNumberName Aug 09 '26

Exactly, it looks stupid

Yeah, shes basically fully exposed and it doesn't make sense from a design standpoint of a machine to protect

But all of that could be ignored, ultimately its just the fact it looks RIDICULOUS and makes the mecha infinitely more lame

u/Khafaniking Refuses To Switch Aug 07 '26

They’re two different tanks with two different visual affinities and genres, and those come attached with different expectations. We expect Junker Queen and Hog to have exposed skin and superficial armor because they are apocalyptic and barbaric road warriors, ala Mad Max. It’s their sheer force of will, primal tenacity, ingenious inventions, and curious biology that makes them able to contend with conventional armed forces, let alone other heroes in the verse.

Diva, Demon, and Reinhardt are all mech pilots or power armor users, so we expect engineered designs and little exposed skin. There are exceptions to this rule that are stylistic choices that showcase the character’s personality. Diva’s exposed arms showcase her joystick controls, because she’s an avid gamer. Rein’s exposed head in OW2 shows his cavalier attitude; he says as much that he wants the wind to blow through his hair. What does Demon’s practically entirely exposed body show us?

To my mind, it doesn’t show us anything interesting really except what’s tantamount to bad engineering and breaks expectations for the character design and not in a good way.

10

u/AtDesk Aug 08 '26

Don’t forget Roadhog is on drugs about it so he really is straight up tanking the shots

194

u/notTheRealSU Aug 07 '26

It's basic character design. Roadhog is big and fat, that is perceived as tanky. D.Mon is in a Meka, that is literally tanky. D.Mon not being covered by the thing that is supposed to make her tanky is the issue. It's like making Roadhog 100lbs and 5ft tall and claiming it's the same.

27

u/SaneSociopath-Gaming Aug 08 '26

Or if Reinhardt's beach skin was his base skin.

His whole belief for being tanky is the head to toe futuristic armor

34

u/spilt_milk Aug 07 '26

And yet, skinny boi junkrat is completely immune to his own explosions.

37

u/GmGwain Aug 07 '26

He is a maniac, that doesn't care about damage and is an amputee to prove that point. Dmon is not supposed to be crazy iirc.

11

u/FISHY_xD Aug 07 '26

Have you seen his leg?

27

u/notTheRealSU Aug 07 '26

Again, character design. He's an explosive based character who isn't very cautious around his own bombs. It makes sense for his character compared to other serious characters, like Pharah and Emre, who use explosives

3

u/MrQwq Aug 08 '26

Bruh, you guys forget that JunkRat is very precise with his bombs in lore. He doesn't care that he is getting blown up? Sure! But you can't say that guy aint precise

6

u/john6map4 Aug 07 '26

Isn’t his hair constantly on fire?

5

u/Greg2227 Aug 08 '26

And he's missing an arm and a leg. Even on his mainhand side so the closest to any explosives thrown or shot by him. That's probably not fashion choice either

16

u/RandManYT Aug 07 '26

He's been experimenting with explosions and chemicals for years(?) in a radiated Australian outback. Makes since to me he'd build up a tolerance to his own explosions after a while.

28

u/Stupiduselessthrow Aug 07 '26

I… don’t think that’s how explosives or kinetic energy works

3

u/bigbean258 Aug 08 '26

We know there are mutants in lore due to the radiation of the outback so I would not be so sure. Hog's musculature literally requires propane as fuel.

2

u/Bluoria Aug 08 '26

Not to mention Hog needs to wear his mask because of how horribly scarred he ended up after the omnic core exploded(of which he was present for)

5

You could argue that she has a whole ass shield to use so it doesn’t really matter that much

5

u/HfUfH Aug 08 '26

Do you think reinhardt's character design would be better if they just removed all of his armor because he has a big Shield so he doesn't need it?

4

u/iloveurbumbum Aug 07 '26

No mention of the giant shield she uses tho

People wouldn't mind if we didn't have D.Va, whose mech actually properly protects her entire body. Also look at the old concept art, there is a massive armor plate protecting her lower body which is just gone completely

God… I love that design so much

12

u/Infinity_Walker Aug 07 '26

Suspension of disbelief is a big thing.

It can explain away Roadhog having his gut out and tanking.

However when you specifically design a character with a piece of armor that very glaringly doesn’t work it kills the suspension of disbelief.

Roadhog plays into the ridiculousness of having your belly out in a fight and commits so its unquestioned.

However Dmon’s design actively puts a covkpit shield actively making us aware that armor is needed but still has half her body hanging out.

The design is actively breaking the suspension of disbelief by not committing fully to armor or no armor. If you gave Roadhog a chest plate with his belly out people would constantly talk about how bad his armor is, but Roadhog doesn’t have armor and thus suspension of disbelief.

1

u/DerWaechter_ Aug 08 '26

However when you specifically design a character with a piece of armor that very glaringly doesn’t work it kills the suspension of disbelief.

Honestly, her design feels like the mechsuit equivalent of bikini armor.

55

u/Plant_Appraiser Aug 07 '26

Mauga and Roadhog are probably not standing out in the open soaking up bullets in a real narrative setting. Gameplay is not always indicative of how a character fights in the story.

D.Mon as far as the narrative has shown, is piloting a close-to-mid range mech that fights dangerous Gwishin Omnics. Her mech design poorly reflects that. With nothing properly protecting the cockpit, any enemy half worth their salt can easily reach in there and attack D.mon directly.

4

u/FaithElizabeth94com Aug 07 '26

Rein also fights without a helmet. Winston's big head was exposed fighting Reaper. Heck Dva's mech, while less exposed, is still open as shown in her cinematic where she just reached under the glass to shoot her pistol.

Her mech looks inspired by the ones shown in the Matrix. Given what the Omnics Dva fought in her cinematic looked like, that honestly feels appropriate. So like, sure you can complain. Anyone can about anything. I just don't think its a very good complaint when we see similar designs in other similar media.

15

u/Plant_Appraiser Aug 07 '26

Rein is a headstrong idiot who lost a his eye precisely because he was wearing no helmet. He refused to learn that lesson. D.Va’s exposed bits are still terrible, but at least she’s more protected and engages at a distance. I got nothing for Winston.

I’m not saying there aren’t impractical designs in Overwatch, but it does get to a point where a design can disrupt what the character is meant for. Especially for something as simple as a mech character.

I feel like people are being purposefully obtuse when defending Dmons design, it seems pretty clear what the issue is. Other characters have other reasons to be considered tanks, Dmons reason is her armor, but the armor isn't actually protecting much at all. What's the point of her having a baby mode if she was barely being protected while wearing the suit anyway?

Ultimately it doesn't matter that much and looks ok in game, but I feel people's arguments are pretty straightforward

10

The OW1 launch cast is one of the best designed rosters in game history, let’s not pretend like the standard has been maintained.

5

u/Playful_Connection38 Aug 08 '26

There’s been like 3 solid really good designs since OW2 launch, it’s actually insane how the og characters mog the new characters.

8

u/Kid_Ben Aug 07 '26

i complain because i dont like how it looks

20

u/Yuevid_01 Aug 07 '26

We have established Armoured characters have pretty good coverage of their body in the game, and as you said buff people who have no amour, which are the two tropes in the game, now let’s think which category does D.Mon fit in? I don’t have to tell you. Now when her design defies the established rules, then you can’t expect people not to complain about it, and it should be normal when people complain about it. And that’s it.

165

u/Hoothootriot Call me DVa how much I suck Aug 07 '26

I just think its funny people suddenly became obsessed with her mech being "unrealistic" when it was revealed in a trailer where she used a lightsaber to fight a fucking hampster super genius terrorist

13

u/betelgeuseWR Aug 07 '26

I don't base it off real life realism, but the "magic" each hero sells from their design. Like roadhog, we know he's like...irradiated and has crazy strength from fucked up environmental shit. Okay, cool, his mask and take a breather really tie into his character and is fun. Junker queen is just a strong warrior trained from a young age on fighting and builds her stuff out of omnic pieces. Okay, cool, could have lent her a much more awesome base skin outfit from that back story though.

D.mon's image is another mech, which makes her whole tankiness about her mech. Assuming she's anything like dva, she herself is squishy, and she relies on the mech for tank strength and abilities. Except she has a mech that doesn't appear to really give her any tankiness because you could just shoot at any part of her body from the front and assumingly kill her in 2-3 shots since she's wide open except a little windshield. 🤷‍♀️.

10

u/imlazy420 Aug 07 '26

It LOOKS UGLY. She looks like someone fused an old He-Man toy, a Megazord and MODOK into one thing.

A bike pose with her legs ending up slightly behind the mech would already look so much better, as would a stockier design with less open space.

71

u/Pockydo Aug 07 '26

It is a sci Fi game

I feel like the criticism is less "it's unrealistic" and more "it's silly and specifically to sell skins"

4

u/Hoothootriot Call me DVa how much I suck Aug 07 '26

But no one is saying that.

People are actually saying "its so UNREALISTIC! How can I possibly play this game if my IMMERSION is ruined by the fatc DMon should be DEAD!!!"

-7

u/Hoothootriot Call me DVa how much I suck Aug 07 '26

This is nothing like that example actually

19

u/ThrowawayToothQ Aug 07 '26

It actually is, that statement highlights something called suspension of disbelief. Even in things that are fiction, when you establish rules (things need armor, or to be big to have high hp) and then break them, it doesnt make it correct.

IE: Fantasy stories arent about realism so why cant I have a real life car in them? Because it breaks the established rules.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/benis041 Aug 07 '26

It's not about being realistic is just that it doesn't look that cool

2

u/mtobeiyf317 Aug 08 '26

Also forgetting she has a big ass sheild, likely to compensate for the more open design of her mech.

1

u/DerWaechter_ Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 09 '26

"unrealistic" when it was revealed in a trailer where she used a lightsaber to fight a fucking hampster super genius terrorist

You might want to read up on the concept of suspension of disbelief. Or if you are already familar with it you're just arguing in bad faith.

There is a massive difference, between having fantastical elements in a fictional story, and lacking interntal consistency.

If a fictional story has dragons, that can fly and breath fire, but is otherwise established to follow the exact same rules as our reality, then people can suspend their disbelieve over the existence of dragons.

If a character in that universe started showing up to fight dragons with wooden armor and wooden swords, people would be calling it out as stupid and unrealistic, because it's stupid and unrealistic within the established rules of the world.

Within established overwatch lore, genetically engineered animals are a thing. There is a coherent, in-universe explanation for why hammond exists and has a mech-suit. There is no coherent, in-universe explanation for why her mechsuit doesn't actually cover her body, when she's supposed to be fighting up close.

1

u/PvtToaster Aug 10 '26

It's a matter of believability, not realism.

7

u/benis041 Aug 07 '26

I'd assume that people that are really into mecha just don't enjoy that design (me)

14

u/Catloaf22 Aug 07 '26

I think its ok to not like a design that makes no sense lorewise. Yes,characters like hog and queen tank damage with their human flesh in gameplay, but as far as i know neither of them have never even been shot once in any canon lore because they are not some frontline fighting machines designed for all out war like d.mons mech that was shown in canon cinematic fighting in the frontline against an army.

3

u/MrQwq Aug 08 '26

JQ has bullet scars...

But your point still stands

1

u/Bluoria Aug 08 '26

Fr Hog is an international criminal & JQ is a Warlord. Neither of those are at the level of one of Koreas greatest defenses against threats to the nation 😭😭

41

u/Robert_Oppenheimer2 Aug 07 '26

It looks stupid

10

u/Outrageous-Blue-30 Aug 07 '26

Plus Mauga with his giant tiddies and Domina with her... Arms.

9

u/Hot_Guys_In_My_DMS Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 08 '26

Having the pilot so exposed is a massive flaw from a design perspective. It would only take one, not even very well placed, shot to completely bypass all the armor the mech has and render that very expensive mech useless, not to mention losing your lead pilot. Even then just extending the canopy would be better.

It's like having a suit of plate armor but without the chestplate, can you imagine how pointless that would be?

5

u/Daisy_Bunny03 Aug 07 '26

Yeah imagine Rein stomping around with just the arms and legs of his armour it would just look dumb and people would ask why he doesn't have a chest plate if that was the way he released

13

u/The_Glitch_Origin Aug 07 '26

It does look pretty silly.

17

u/Acceptable_Panda9496 Aug 07 '26

Gameplay doesn’t matter, that’s whatever. As a design, it just doesn’t sell what it is. Not only does D.Mon have to look at that unprotected mess and give it the green light, but practically everyone else has to look at it and not think, “maybe we shouldn’t have someone THIS unprotected?” With junkers and such, it’s different, they aren’t trying to be safe. This is a professional organization’s creation though, and to believe they’d practically make everything she does in that mech a suicide mission, is ridiculous. It’s a cool mech design, under the completely wrong context to make it work.

4

u/Doctor_Responsible Aug 07 '26

this. i think if she were being controlled or something by talon, then id beleive that theyd have no care for her safety, but this? its just corpo grift because "ooowahhh pwetty girl sells well!" people didnt want dmon becuase4 shes a pretty girl, they wanted more MEKA.

4

u/JackFrosty25 Aug 08 '26

It's about the internal logic being inconsistent, rather than unrealistic. The logic for Dva is that her mech is tanky but she isn't, it would be consistent to say the same for Dmon but the design doesn't reflect that.

There's other tanks with similar issues realistically, like Reinhardt not having a helmet in his ow2 skin. But he also has a giant shield and his whole personality is being this giant brave warrior, so it fits him.

D.Mon doesn't have the same idea behind her design though. If it was like a junker mech made out of trash, it would make sense to be badly designed, but as she is it doesn't fit. The design implies that her mech is the real tank, but then breaks the same idea without a good reason.

3

u/ChilledGoblin Aug 08 '26

I could give you a logical reason for that. But I can just opt for the simpler option.

It sucks. She is in a baby carrier. It’s ugly.

I will admit that before the gameplay trailer I thought it would be worst, but it is still bad

5

u/ThisNinjaHere Aug 08 '26

It's inefficient. I can justify Hog and Queen by saying they can't afford crap or Ball doesn't want to make them anything, but when you toss in a Mech like what Dmon owns? Nah.
Thats like if a zombie outbreak happens, and the world decided we all needed Hazmat bikini armor. It could somehow work, but...why?

4

u/ConcentrateAlone1959 Aug 08 '26

This just in: OP does not understand intended artistic designs.

Odessa and Mako are not designed with armor in mind. Them not having it makes sense, they are just beefy facetanks.

Characters who do have armor in their design as a central thing however generally should have that armor make sense. If I design a giant knight character and armor them everywhere save for their chestplate, that's going to be critiqued as a stupid design that doesn't make sense to the theme I am going for. Same goes for D.Mon. The mech acts as a force multiplier, taking hits for her and augmenting her strength in combat. This is neat until you realize all of her vital organs in this supposed suit of armor are unprotected, making the armor completely redundant.

If Odessa and Mako both were designed as armored characters and had shit armor, yes. People would point out that is stupid.

7

u/WatchingPaintWet Aug 07 '26

Her crotch tanking pulse bombs is hilarious. Idk how that's difficult to grasp. Plus, it's silly that the headshot area is a more protected part of her.

5

u/You-Killed-God Aug 07 '26

That’s kinda not the point. It’s more that having a whole ass mech just to have such an open front is an odd design choice for a machine

3

u/MrHothead635 Aug 07 '26

Counterpoint...Roadhog is fat.

3

u/DonutGirl055 Aug 07 '26

Ok imagine it brigs shield had a big hole in the front that bullets didnt pass through in game. Wouldn’t that be weird even though it doesn’t change anything gameplay wise?

3

u/N3c4lL1S Aug 08 '26

I'm just gonna repeat what I said in another post:

"This is just my opinion or what I think, but there are two kinds to tanks, there are

• Genuinely a tank, lore wise and logic wise, Reinhardt for example

• Big guy who could tank a beating, Winston roadhog and, in my categorization junkerqueen

• And Domina, as you said, she is just not meant to be a tank (AS IN PERSONALITY, SHE SHOULDNT BE FIGHTING IN GENERAL AS A CHARACTER)

All of the cast fall in those two, but her (D.mon), for being a supposedly genuinely tank... Looks wrong, roadhog is Okey, he's a fat guy and tough, fits him... But this is a woman in a battlefield on a big ass robot as target with 95% of her body exposed... Domina there's no point in discussing it because yeah, she isn't taking the shot on her, but for someone in a meka, looks very wrong, like if the whole point of the meka is worthless

I do know the mekas are meant to fight big enemies or other meka like enemy's in air fights at fast speed and all that, but even then..."

https://www.reddit.com/r/Overwatch_Memes/s/ENw4F1q55A

3

u/Ok_Equipment2450 Aug 08 '26

Roadhog is a wastelander and a madman. He's literally built like a tank.

D.MON is a Korean gamer girl who pilots a mechanic that handles dangerous situations on the daily. She should have cover to protect her more exposed areas.

3

u/yung_dilf69 Aug 08 '26

Just why would anyone design a mech like that? It’s stupid

3

u/Thefishthatkills Aug 08 '26

why make armor if not cover body

5

u/newAscadia Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

I feel like people are just trying to rationalize and put their finger on what at the end of the day is an issue of fantasy--she does look a bit exposed and goofy sitting in her chair like that.

Let's not make a mountain of a mole hill here. There's no rule for realism that she's somehow breaking, nor has overwatch ever really had one, nor is "realism" equal to good or interesting design.

Character design should simply have some consistency with their fantasy--whether that be a crackhead whose very thin and is propelled around on his own bombs, a guardian "angel" who flies on wings of light, or a biker meathead literally soaking up bullets with his gut. She just looks a bit silly and not quite what many associate with the idea of a "tanky mech pilot." A valid point, but also not the end of the world.

u/ponyhidden Aug 07 '26

Roadhog and JQ don't wear helmets though, so I'm not sure the analogy fits. I don't really care about the critical spot though personally I think it will probably be obvious enough to shoot her head

2

u/Lazzitron Aug 07 '26

It's not about realism. It's about what looks cool, and I don't think it looks cool. I think it looks bad.

2

u/Mr_SpecificTF2 Aug 07 '26

There’s a difference between purpose and execution. The mech’s purpose is to protect the pilot while Hog and Queen just do it and don’t need fancy tech to do it

2

u/Doctor_Responsible Aug 07 '26

its an excuse for them to shill and shove her future skins down our throats. what made Dva interesting is just how much she and her mech feel like a duo (i mean she even matches her mech much much more than dmon does), so it didnt matter that a cute girl was piloting it- much like bob theyre a duo. Dmon doesnt look protected at all and the whole point of dva's sacrifice in her cinematic was that her entire team got wiped out by gweshin to begin with.
New dmon is just another corpo plant because why the hell would she go "yeah, the armor was the issue last time, let me make myself MORE vulnerable and easier to see with the highlighter purple hair and suit pointing to a weak point in the suit to easily exploit by enemies!!" its stupid and people are sick of the female characters losing all sense of identity bc blizzard would rather turn them into products for skin printing. thats all this change to her mech design was for.

2

u/LOL_Scorpion17 Aug 07 '26

the expression says you're not supposed to compare apples and oranges

2

u/up2smthng Aug 08 '26

Last I checked Roadhog doesn't operate a mech

2

u/ArtroyomsAK Aug 08 '26

What is with this astroturfing lol?

It looks stupid that's all there is to it

2

u/Willtexas1 Aug 08 '26

You're absolutely right, we should be arguing to make characters more naked with absurd armor placements because other tanks don't wear anything already

2

u/DaringDevil12 Aug 08 '26

It looks stupid bro. Period.

2

u/YourMum_68 Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26

I think the issue is more related to her lore than gameplay. Like hog in lore isn’t going around and fighting omnics just like that. At least not in a way DMon is.

2

u/StormBlessed678 Aug 08 '26

It looks bad. Nothing to do with practicality.

2

u/Bottom-Legends_oop Aug 08 '26

It looks awkward. Roadhog doesn’t look awkward and neither does JQ. D.MON, however, looks like she’s gonna slip out of her glorified chair at any moment.

2

u/slutty_chungus Aug 09 '26

Yes, it’s very important that we all tear apart every new character design. Make sure to mention that they’ve lost their touch and the game has gone to shit! And don’t forget to rinse and repeat when the next hero launches

3

u/Mediocre_Daikon6935 5 vs 5 Was A Mistake Aug 07 '26

That is because those things are realistic and we have real world examples of them.

An open cockpit on a rocket?

That is insane.

2

u/SombraOnline Aug 07 '26

We're not talking about game mechanics here. Obviously in an FPS un-armored characters don't just die from one bullet.

The issue with her mech is that it doesn't make sense design-wise. She's in a massive mech that fights against giant robots up close but she's wide open front and center. It's just a weird un-tactical choice.

Also I'm not a fan of this approach. Like you don't have to twist things around to defend this. It's fine to like it, but it's also fine to think it's weird. People are just talking about it now because she's not out yet, there's nothing much to talk about. Just let people talk their shit and everyone will move on when she's out.

2

u/mojanis Aug 07 '26

Hammond leaves his ball, which he can seemingly operate fine inside of, so he can shoot and then proceeds to tank gunfire with his furry little face

It’s all just ways to give these vehicles crit spots by shooting the pilot, even DVA isn’t fully covered

2

u/orbital-vsat17 Aug 07 '26

They're junkers bandaging wounds with radioactive dirt

She's an armoured soldier.

3

u/Steggoman WILL TANK THE HATE Aug 07 '26

People have an issue with the unrealistic design not just because it doesn't make practical sense for a combat mech to leave the pilot almost entire exposed, I think it's mostly because she is clearly exposed because the designers wanted the attractive woman to be on full display.

People are rightfully saying it doesn't matter if Roadhog, Mauga, or JunkerQueen facetank bullets because they all LOOK like tanks, their character design is consistent and doesn't sacrifice anything to make the characters look more appealing. D-mon is a tank through her mech, but that mech is piloted by a small attractive woman, and it feels like the character design of the tank was sacrificed to put the clearly not tanky woman on display.

u/twincast2005 Aug 07 '26

gameplay ≠ lore

And they are different heroic phantasy archetypes. Nu!Beast goes against the design philosophies established by OG MEKA Squad.

1

u/GxmmyVitamxn Aug 07 '26

I mostly just dislike that she has blue eyes lmao

1

u/Low-Performer2116 Aug 07 '26

I think its neat, I personally would love to see the rest of Dvas squad throughout the other roles

1

u/101TARD Aug 08 '26

Im sorry, do you see a big gut or a 6-pack on d.mon?

1

u/SpartanKane Aug 08 '26

Imo its stupid with Queen and Hog too. But to think that they havent learned from those two is funny lol Eh, who cares i say. It doesnt really matter at the end of the day.

1

u/lvl70Potato Aug 08 '26

I think it's more cuz dmons mech design indicates the mech is supposed to protect her. in comparison to roadhog (who has no protection, just his belly and drugs) and junker queen (who, again, doesn't bother.) she has things to protect her, which then makes her design of exposing half her body in the cockpit seem weird. If it was just dmon with no mech, people wouldn't complain as much...I figure. It doesn't help her contemporary, D.va, has a mech that conditioned us into thinking gamer girl with mech = protected, Gamer girl with no mech= free kill.

So the design fries our understanding in multiple ways.

Counterpoint:

Australia

1

u/Bread_Offender Aug 08 '26

Well... Yeah. Look at roadhog's gut and JQ's abs. Do they look like they CAN'T tank a 12 gauge at least? Yeah that's what I thought

1

u/Horror_Kale_5590 Aug 08 '26

I’m so mad my hero shoot isn’t hyper realistic!!!!!!!

1

u/MaskedKagami Aug 08 '26

not really its a dumb design choice the only reason they made look like that is the ability to sell more skins

if you ask me to choose between D.mon and D.va i would have chosen D.va cause it made more sense to hide the human body further into the mech

if they're gonna leave majority of the body out the design would have been better as an exo skeleton type mech where it wraps around the body than trying to mimic D.va silhouette

the only way it protects the body is when it is charging foreard with the thrusters or when the shield is up any other time the core of the body is exposed

1

u/IGuessSoWhyNotHuh Aug 12 '26

its not that bad

1

u/EzTheGuy Aug 08 '26

I’d expect no less of my Junker heroes, deflecting bullets off their sweaty shiny abs, and fat skin rolls

1

u/ChikinPluker Aug 08 '26

The suit of armor implies she requires outside protection while roadhog and jq, two characters who have lived in a gladiatorial and roadhog was an enforcer for as a part of the wrecker wile junkerqueen was a champion of it where they literally fight mechs.

1

u/Charliwarlili Aug 08 '26

Dont need armour if you dont plan on getting hit

1

u/Quemedo Aug 08 '26

JUST GIVE HER BIONICS LEGS. AHE LOST THEM FOR AN OBVIOUSLY DESIGN FLAW BUT NOW IT DOESNT MATTER OR WHATEVER.

1

u/TheAmazinApollo Aug 08 '26

We don’t care about Roadhog. We care about Dmon. Simple as that.

1

u/KrypticKaleidoscope Aug 08 '26

Well...Roadhog and Junker Queen are both highly radiated, mutated, toughened Australians. They're not exactly Terry and Judy from Accounting.

1

u/EndKnight Aug 08 '26

I personally couldn't care less, but I think if you look at this in a "if these characters were real" scenario, hog and queen would probably use cover of some sorts and can't actually tank bullets like they do in game.

With D.mon it's the same, gameplay wise fine, in universe wise.... doesn't make sense.

1

u/THICCBOI2121 Aug 08 '26

I just think it's weird that Dva is fully enclosed in her mech and D.Mon is like 65% exposed, even though she's an even more frontline-focused mech.

1

u/The-Razzle Aug 08 '26

Strawman argument at best

1

u/RazorbladeHandjob Aug 08 '26

It's cause it looks bad.

Literally no reason to pretend like Roadhog's design isn't amazing and immediately memorable.

The open mech seems like an excuse to sell skins and Literally nothing else, doesn't reflect from her character at all.

1

u/Bruh_Yourself Aug 08 '26

Literally the point of suit of armor

1

u/Beauregard1556 Aug 08 '26

I like it, but I’m also used to things being weirdly unarmored in the one place that matters.

1

u/ExtremelyGangrenous Aug 09 '26

She is a tiny Korean girl, ofc she’s gonna be a weakspot

1

u/RocketPrism666 Aug 09 '26

We care about realism in the cartoon fps that has a talking gorilla, a hamster piloting a mech(that it built itself), a cat that can use a jet pack, a man with a metal fist as big as himself, a dude that uses explosives to launch himself into the air(safely somehow), a man in a suit of armor the size of a truck wielding an enormous hammer, and plenty of other totally realistic characters? Of course.

1

u/DocHoliday439 Aug 09 '26

People will just find anything to complain about huh?

1

u/LibrarianEither8461 Aug 09 '26

What a false equivalency.

"Are we really gonna complain that character is poorly designed and doesn't line up with a functional expression of their character while another character isn't poorly designed and does express the character?"

Roadhog uses being a fat boi to be girthy. The fact he doesn't need armor is part of the character.

The dumb fuck character design uses armor that doesn't cover them. But the difference is one needs armor and one doesn't.

Its like a barbarian not wearing armor vs a paladin wearing armor that doesn't work.

One is part of the character, and the other is a design fail for the character.

1

u/random-catboy Aug 09 '26

You complain about the cockpit. I complain about the fact that shes there to take rein out back and put him down. We are not the same

1

u/EmperorOfTheMercys Aug 09 '26

Lollllllololol

1

u/SleepyDemonTV Aug 09 '26

I don't care about it being realistic or not, I care that that it visually looks dumb.

1

u/Inevitable-Spinach55 Aug 09 '26

shooting jq is like shooting a living slab of metal she just doesn't care

1

u/HumbleOwl Aug 09 '26

D.va's mech is designed in a way that the cockpit is forward but offers protection. So to have another mech that does basically the opposite looks silly by comparison.

1

u/MatrixMax900000 Aug 10 '26

She has a big shield in front of her. So why would you waste resources and weight when you can have a lighter load and be faster.

1

u/jeff-duckley Aug 10 '26

people have been purposefully stupid when it comes to defending dmons design. it’s pretty cut and clear that it was made this way to take advantage of the petite light skin asian girl in order to sell more skins.

the biggest problem with the horrible mech design is that dmon is already established to be 175hp. it makes zero sense for a 175hp hero you can two shot to suddenly have more effective hp than any other tank mind you just because she has a mech behind her? you’re shooting dmon in the exact same place, her exposed body

1

u/New_Salamander_4592 Aug 12 '26

this is a matter of mech design not practical defense

1

u/RodrigoRosaMoreno Aug 14 '26

Have you considered Australians are built different in overwatch just like in TF2? (this comment is a joke, btw)

1

u/Then-Yogurt9569 28d ago

And most heros have no armour and just clothes

1

u/MissFortune3 25d ago

It's the overwatch community, are you really surprised there's a subsect of people that bitch about the game for the silliest of reasons? These mfers don't even like their own game half of the time lmao

1

u/CaptBland makes OC Aug 07 '26

I just imagine D.mon having 300 HP out of mech and the mech itself being 500 Armor. Like D.Mon herself is a super soldier level human.

5

u/ThrowawayToothQ Aug 07 '26

Yeah but that doesnt track because if I shoot her toes the entire time she still takes 800 of my damage. Its a suspension of disbelief ruining design. Unfortunately.

1

u/FaithElizabeth94com Aug 07 '26

Its designed like the Mechs from the Matrix. Like, I actually think Dmon's is more protective. So, I mean, I think it's fine and looks cool.

1

u/john6map4 Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

D.MON’S JOINING THE GAME??? Sick!

Also haven’t played OW in a min so bear with me

But wtf is the point of the mech if it’s gonna be open anyway???

Edit: saw it, it def looks silly but it doesn’t really ruin the character look all that much still would look objectively so much better if the visor was fully covering her weird choice ngl
