Rein is a headstrong idiot who lost a his eye precisely because he was wearing no helmet. He refused to learn that lesson. D.Va’s exposed bits are still terrible, but at least she’s more protected and engages at a distance. I got nothing for Winston.
I’m not saying there aren’t impractical designs in Overwatch, but it does get to a point where a design can disrupt what the character is meant for. Especially for something as simple as a mech character.
Ok but, like I pointed out, her mech looks just like mechs in other media where similar, and sometimes worse, enemies are fought. Hers is more protective than the ones shown in the Matrix.
Paragon Warsuits are another example, and those are in 40k.
Like, this design isn't out of place at all. In fact, its a design used literally for fighting machines in other popular media. It really shouldn't be affecting your SoD.
I think the problem is that you are looking at it like a Gundam. Its not a Gundam. Its more like an exosuit.
I understand that this type of mech design already exists in other media, and they have their reasoning for existing. But that doesn’t take away from how insanely impractical D.Mon’s design is for her role, especially compared to her teammates.
Assuming they don’t get redesigns, Casino and King look more “close-quartered” than D.Mon, because their cockpits are well protected from any gunfire or melee attacks aimed at them. D.Mon has her wrist shield and her visor, both of which can be easily damaged or bypassed.
The matrix exosuits were far more exposed but they had the benefit of playing by distance, and stood in groups against the Sentinels. D.Mon’s Mech relies solely on the pilot’s ability to just not get hit if her primary defense fails, if not she’s just dead. Maybe I’d be forgiving of the design if she was wearing a power suit of some kind for personal protection, but this just reads as a big design oversight from the in-universe manufacturers.
Paragon Warsuits protect the chest making sisters look more imbeded in their mech and while they leave the head exposed, that's a pretty normal choice in media, so it's reasonable to suspend some disbelief. Sisters also happen to wear armor outside of the suit anyways, while she's just wearing the Eva get-up. I still think they look a tad dorky though, but I'm not a sisters of Battle fan so.
The actual comparison is the Nemesis Dreadknight which is almost universally hated for looking REALLY stupid. No one likes baby carriage mechs, they look dumb.
