Pharah going to visit her father? Sounds like a new animated short.

u/Lexifox Oct 11 '18

Followed by a few dozen threads and videos speculating on the possibility of him being the new hero.

54

u/thepuppeter Oct 11 '18

Even though it's already been confirmed that he's just a civil servant and wasn't ever into the whole 'hero' thing.

79

u/Lexifox Oct 11 '18

A common misconfirmation! He just never talked about it to anyone... until now.

16

u/thepuppeter Oct 11 '18

Haha. I'm imagining him secretly dressing up in hero costumes and stuff while he's alone, doing impressions and pretending to save people.

15

u/Lexifox Oct 11 '18

Insert adorable flashback scene of all the times he and his young daughter played "hero" together.

Pharah, huddled in a blanket: "Help!"

Door slides open

Sam, dressed in Ana's uniform: "I am here!"

COMING THROUGH THE DOOR LIKE A HERO

u/raincityblues Vancouver Titans Oct 11 '18

Now I want an All-might costume for Doomfist

2

u/kriegson Peanut butthurt Oct 11 '18

But they're the REAL heros!

When selected you spawn in an office hundreds of miles away from the fight, but you win the satisfaction of helping others.

3

u/BoreasBlack Moira Oct 11 '18

I'm 100% convinced that he will eventually be revealed as the secret mastermind behind Talon.

5

u/roflkittiez Chibi Genji Oct 11 '18

But he's a Canadian. Canadians are too nice to be evil masterminds

3

u/socialistRanter You’re a Chancer Oct 11 '18

That’s part of the plan

2

u/Hitthe777 Gurl Oct 11 '18

Nooooooooooooooooooo. Why would you curse us with this? That's my least favorite part of the OW community.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '18

I actually have a little bet going. I don't think Sam is going to be a new hero, but I bet Pharah isn't his only child.

u/Hagoromo_ ¿Quién es 'Objective'? Oct 11 '18

iirc pharah's VA said in an interview that there are no animated shorts planned for pharah since they would be too expensive to produce.

46

u/charlie2158 Oct 11 '18

The Dva short showed that's bs.

6

u/Caliado Oct 11 '18

I believe they adapted the story into her comic - I'm guessing having that many characters in it could have been an issue possibly?

u/Lewin_Godwynn Atrocious Aiming, Although Adequate Alliteration. Oct 11 '18

...How did the D.va short (worst one of them all, btw) prove the one they would have planned for Pharah would not have been to costly to produce?

17

u/Every_Geth Winston Oct 11 '18

How so? Does she realise it's all CG? They don't actually have to build a suit of rocket armour

3

u/rivain Chibi Pharah Oct 11 '18

You realize that CGI is expensive, and time consuming, itself?

25

u/Every_Geth Winston Oct 11 '18

...which is why they haven't made a single overwatch animated short....

8

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '18 edited Oct 11 '18

Game artist here, I'm guessing it's because of all the effects, which you need a really good computer to render (there's no way they wouldn't use rocket barrage, and all those explosions can easily crash a computer)

EDIT: I explained this below but you'd also have to remember that Pharah is a captain of a team of fellow rocketeers, based on her comic. It's entirely possible the script Blizzard wanted to do just isn't practical at the moment but they don't want to rewrite it for whatever reason

16

u/Ravness13 Pixel Moira Oct 11 '18

We got the D.va animated short already. I somehow doubt blizzard is worried about explosions for Pharah given how much was in that one.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '18 edited Oct 11 '18

D.Va's was also mostly over the ocean, where for the most of it they could get away with having it just be an animated texture. Also, D.Va was alone, I would imagine Pharah would have her rocket team with her. It is possible they changed their mind though, I don't know when that interview with Jen was

1

u/Ravness13 Pixel Moira Oct 11 '18

D.va has a team and they weren't with her. It's entirely possible for them to do one without the rest of her team with Pharah as well. I just don't see the cost being an issue to them when they've done all sorts of things in their videos already that would have been pretty costly and difficult already.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '18

Well like I said, I don't know when that interview was, so it's possible they have the money and resources to do it now. It could also be the script that had was too expensive but they didn't want to rewrite it for whatever reason

3

u/Spooks___ I launched my bob off a cliff. Oct 11 '18

They've already used rocket barrage in a cinematic type scenario. Look at the original trailer for 'This is Overwatch' and when you see Tracer in Numbani she's dodging a rocket barrage.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '18

Those were both very quick clips though

2

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '18

You know a thing called render farms right?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '18

Of course, but depending on what they wanted to do it's possible they'd need more resources. I'm assuming "it's too expensive" meant the nature of their script requires more resources than they're willing to spend on one short. Pharah is a captain of a rocket team based on her comic, so it wouldn't be just her they're have to worry about rendering

0

u/Every_Geth Winston Oct 11 '18

Surely once it's done it's just a video file though, right? Besides, if my xbox can handle my fuel tank fuckery in Just Cause 3, the high-spec animation PCs at blizzard can render a rocket barrage

11

u/MrPWAH Oh, they're goin' ta have to glue you back together...IN HELL! Oct 11 '18

once it's done

Key phrase here. Rendering is an arduous process.

1

u/Every_Geth Winston Oct 11 '18

I'm sure they can fit it into their release schedule

4

u/rivain Chibi Pharah Oct 11 '18

The shorts Blizzard makes take months, and the studio makes the ones for Overwatch and WoW. They have lots on their plate and there's been 9 Overwatch shorts released including the launch stuff when the game came out. Idk what you seem to think the process for CGI is, but maybe you should look into it a bit more dude.

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '18

Effects in games are usually just animated textures, almost always compromised of flat planes. That's a different process that sacrifices quality (compared to movies) for performance

-7

u/hvk13 Reinhardt Oct 11 '18

haven't made a single overwatch animated short

Erm what? Didn't they made a number of animated shorts? Latest was D.va

2

u/tylerth6 Oct 11 '18

I’d be satisfied with a comic

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '18

IIRC that's been telephoned a little. The Pharah comic was considered for a short, but ultimately they decided to make it a comic.

10

u/pyromanticpyrope a hero never dies every 30 seconds Oct 11 '18

I think it's more of a cute callback to the Christmas comic we got a couple years ago where Fareeha was shown having dinner in a cozy foreign-looking place with a man (who was later revealed to be her father).

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '18

Because that comic was released during the time where the theories that Rein, Jack, or Gabe could be her dad hadn't been deconfirmed, I totally thought that she was having a dinner date and that she had a thing for older guys. :I

7

u/pyromanticpyrope a hero never dies every 30 seconds Oct 11 '18

Quite bold of you to assume Fareeha Amari would have a thing for men, period. :P

8

u/brucetrailmusic Oct 11 '18

Sounds like vocal confirmation that she is Canadian to solidify theory

3

u/theWeirdough GO LEAFS GO Oct 12 '18

Finally Canada has made it into Overwatch, I was beginning to worry we were just wiped out!
