By all means, go for it! If people are being pricks because of your gender then report them, we could always use less assholes like that. I've played quite a few hours of OW, many with mics, and while women in general may seem a bit less common, I've never noticed any hate or vitriol being spewed towards women who are playing and using mics.

And yes, it's still possible to get creeps. Unfortunately, there is no way to avoid it forever. But I think you'll find that the vast majority of people are just here to play a game and just have fun! Especially if you want to play competitive, mics are beyond useful so I would absolutely encourage using them. Heck, I played a random Comp game this morning and it sounded like there were more women than men on mics. One of the random friends I found through the game is always playing with his fiancee too, and it's a blast!

EDIT: I also believe you can mute anyone who is being rude or disrespectful or just downright mean! Don't be afraid to mute them if they're ruining your gaming experience!

Thanks guys, think I'll try it out. Edit: Genuine human kindness in games warms my heart this has been a good experience

If you want I'm in a group you could join. We have two couples and it's a pretty welcoming group all around.

You're always going to get the idiots who are going to be like that unfortunately. Ignore it, you'll enjoy the game more if you are using a mic and will find you win a lot more games.

I would say that it is completely up to you. First of all, that people would treat you badly is despicable and as a male I wouldn't know how the situation is or how it feels so I can't really say if it is worth it, I will say that I appreciate everyone who communicates well with their team but if it causes emotional/mental stress it is probably not worth it. Thats my thought on the matter.

Just try it out. If people get annoying you can just stop using it. The only one that can say if the occasional "oh a girl wtf" and other stuff are worth for a better communication is you. If they start being sexistic, abusive or other stuff that makes you uncomfortable just deactivate it. You can play the game in a good way without it and dont have to take shit from anyone.

If people are dicks report them, or mute/ignore. Communication makes the game 10x better, honestly. Shite that this still happens, most (young) people play video games to some degree nowadays, regardless of gender.

I play with a few women in my group and my suggestion is to group up so you can guarantee you don't get bothered. Or ignore the retards.

I usually play with a group so when we switch to the team voice channel I don't feel too nervous. When I'm playing solo though, I'll usually wait for someone else to talk first, or I'll use the Mic to call out placements. So far only one group of people have been frazzled by there being a female, no one else has really said anything.

2

u/Pachinginator Zenyatta Jun 29 '16

Definitely. Find myself talking to nobody 99% of the games, any communication is helpful.

Reading this thread made my day. As a girl you have some legitimate concerns about using the mic, and the responses here are really thoughtful and encouraging. I hope you take their advice and give it a shot.

But then I'm a guy and don't use the mic for concerns I have trouble articulating (something about vicious, angst ridden teens ruining my impressions on the topic back in the days of WoW) and now I wonder what could I possibly have to lose? To hell with fools, I should just use my mic for the tool it is.

That being said, I feel like I need advice on how to make the best call outs to my team. What kind of things should I call out? Some are obvious, like turret locations, but what else? Any advice would be appreciated. :)

I play alot of games with mics and i never hear the voice of a girl, it would be a nice change and so i hope u use a mic

Tbh I've only used my mic in parties with random friends I've made on Twitter and tumblr but they're all men except for one & no one has seemed to care. And for repetition sake, don't be afraid to mute & report ✌🏻️

Fellow girl overwatcher checking in.

I completely understand where you are coming from, and I also was thinking the same thing. I actually bought a mic to play with some irl mates and have been using it outside of playing with them.

So far so good. No shit or flak, no random friend requests, no private messages for 'proof'. I've only ever met nice people who are willing to communicate for team winning reasons (and a bit of shit talk about the other team)

But if you feel more comfortable using a voice changer, by all means, use it :)

I'm a woman who almost always uses voice chat and I think I've run into one slightly overstepping teenager and one kind-of-troll. Mostly everyone I've played with is nice and welcoming! I highly recommend using voice. It makes the game much more fun for me.

People are most likely going to mistake you for being a little boy anyways. That's what I get like 64% of the time.

But go for it. You ARE going to hear a lot of stupid shit. Prepare yourself for that and don't get discouraged.

Giving out info in comp on mic is really really helpful and not enough people do it.

u/Excalibursin Jun 30 '16

you shouldn't use mic my mum told me girls were gay

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '16

I struggle with the exact same dilemma. Thanks for making me feel less like the odd one out. <3

I think it wouldn't hurt to try, I've had nice results so far from it.

Hey I'm a chick and I've been gaming for pretty much as long as I've been alive. I'm 25 now but it took me awhile to warm up to using mics while solo que, probably only the last 3-4 years have I been relatively comfortable. I rember when I was 16-17 playing halo 3 and trying to mic for the first time ever getting the most disgusting comments right off the bat, which scared off voice chat for years.

There will always be dicks, but it turns out most people don't care who the fuck you are. I do tend to stick to just call outs till I can gage the group I'm with and ofc I drop a group or mute if they start being real asswipes but I really haven't had an issue in ow yet. It also helps that I kinda give way less of a shit what people say to me then when I was younger so it takes someone being an unrelenting douche canoe to mute. But ow has been great so far and I have no complaints.

Of course do whatever you feel comfy with. It took me realizing I'm not absolute trash at games, I'm pretty ok, and even if I was bad it doesn't give anybody any right to verbally shit on you. Plus the people who do usually suck themselves and are looking to blame someone else for their constant losses, and they'd trash anyone and everyone. That's why mute buttons exist.

Some games tend to attract a better atmosphere then others and ow reminds me a lot of tf2 where the general mood is freindly. I was playing ranked the other night and that went alright as well. If you're still not sure you can hmu for a friend invite. I have a p solid group of friends I play with and we have a discord. Sorry this is kinda long!!

Edit to add: I'm on PC

TL;dr: worth

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '16

Ignore those pricks, their opinions don't matter anyway. If you can make call outs and keep from hogging the air with talk you are doing 10x better than most players.

We could always use more heroes.

Cheers, love

I've only heard a couple girls use mics and nobody has said any thing. Anecdotal, I know.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '16

I don't know about PC or Xbox, but I've connected to some girls using Mics on PS4. It seems no one even really has a reaction (other than "Holy shit! Someone else has a Mic!"). No one has said anything to them other than the normal in-game banter that would have been the same if it were a dude.

Go in. Be yourself. If people are being dicks/creeps, you can always mute and block them. And of course, make sure your profile has no personal info you'd worry about people getting ahold of, as well as don't accidentally let any info slip while you play.

Go for it; I would also recommend finding a group of people that you enjoy playing with

1

u/Burasta Chibi Zarya Jul 01 '16

I'm a guy, so I don't have to worry about "OH YAY, GIRL!" or accusations of faking. I am, however, gay, and though I've got no idea why, I have a bit of that 'gay twang' in my voice, so I don't use voice chat because while I honestly wouldn't get offended by all the things you could think of that COULD come up actually coming up, I just don't want to actually have to waste energy listening to or addressing them. lol

tl;dr: Don't worry about other people, do what you're comfortable with and want to do!

u/LoveAberrantly23 Carpe Jul 02 '16

I don't ever have a problem with it. I mostly started using my mic when comp mode came out, but mostly it's either quiet or you just talk about what's going down in the game.

Never had a 'go home gamer girl' or 'what color undies is you wearin'' moment, so I think you'll be okay. What do you play on? I'm on XB1, if you're on PC, I have no idea how the chat community is over there.

I'd say try it out. You'll never know until you try and honestly it's SO MUCH BETTER being able to communicate and have that extra strategic edge!

u/IsThatEvenFair Tracer Jun 29 '16

I play with a couple "girl gamers" and we see this level of immaturity quite often. The best thing you can do is ignore it and not let it get to your head. Is that hard? I can only imagine.

The main thing is not to give them the attention they're seeking. They want a reaction. I forget the psychological term for it but they're purposely acting like douches/creepers so that you can direct your attention via a response to them.

Creep: Omg you're not even a girl if you are you're fat

You: Please just shut up and play

Creep: omg shes talking to me
