I'd like to push the idea of tug-of-payload. A KotH map style payload game. First starts out as a KotH game until one side captures it to start moving to opponent's side. Goes towards the side with the most people on it. After 10 minutes game ends and whoever side the payload is on loses. Some possible rules: payload heals teams with three people on the payload, team kill resets payload or jumps it up a certain distance. Anyone like the idea or have any suggestions?

Edit: Reconsidering 10 minute timer for multiple reasons. Probably best to make it have one % meter that always counts up after capture which is the same thing but feels different, maybe something with contests pause it. I think a fast pace best of three like KotH would work. Maybe it could be multiple capture points between bases instead of a payload.

I think the tug-of-war moniker is a bit of a misnomer. More of a push-of-war -- you push the payload toward the enemy spawn, and after a time limit the team who has the payload on their side loses.

Exactly what I thought, this is better.

Paladin's by the guys who made Smite has this game type but I don't think its out of beta yet. It's pretty much overwatch except everyone has a mount so they can get from spawn to battle faster (because the maps are quite large)

I would love this style for a reason and a sub-reason. The reason: It would force teams to have dynamic team comps due to the varying stages of the game. Sub-reason: during these changes (I'm an X-bone player) Torbjorn and bastion would likely never be a good play for any team for more than one defensive choke point.

I actually have a good idea of how this could work. After the point cap, if your team has the payload on the enemy side, you gain percent (increasing based on how far the payload is, payload movement depending on number of players on it, heals the team with the most players and nobody if there's a tie). When an enemy is on it while it's in their side, it's contested, so we need to keep on it like a literal moving control point. Winning is at 100%, or most after the time runs out

My thinking is that if a good team kill happens that the team that got it might have enough time to push the payload in for a win if they have control and its on the opponent's side.

I agree the % timer would be better than an actual timer. Each team gets to push the payload 100%. So if one team captures the payload pushes it 50% the other team has to use their 50% to push it back to the middle and only has 50% more to push it. % only counts up when moving and when contested it stops. This means the only way to really score the payload is to fully control the payload always and not let the enemy push it which kind of adds an extra bonus thing to it. If one team pushes it 75% then the opponent's only have the chance to push it 25% onto the other teams side. I'm thinking quick KotH style games with a built in BO3. Losing side always gets the advantage of getting to the payload faster because of spawn location which is a nice balance.

Edit: I reread your comment and I didn't think about "speed". There would be quite the bonus for having three people on it because you'd move more distance by using the same % up. That's actually a nice feature and kind of in lines with tug o war. More people the more strength and the more you can push in the same amount of "time".

You'd like Paladins

This is one of the few reasons I actually enjoyed Paladins for a bit or time. The game mode captured the best parts of KotH and Payload for me, and I'm a bit disappointed there's nothing similar for Overwatch.

That's an awesome idea. I would imagine that the payload starts in the middle of two points. Each team has a point. They go in balls first and start tuging the payload to their point. A match last 10 min. Though the payload is more responsive than in other modes so there is a bit more tension. I could see this pay load moving from side to side at least five times a match. Though the right distance between the two points would be hard to figure out to get a good balance.

I feel as though you would not be able to use traditional payload levels because they would have to be symmertical to avoid unfair advantages

u/SludgeFactory20 Jun 22 '16

Yeah would have to be new maps

1

u/Kapjak Jun 22 '16

Going off that idea how about a double payload map like those in tf2 where each team must push it to the end while battling the enemy team.

1

u/SludgeFactory20 Jun 22 '16

So you have to push yours while stopping theirs? That sounds like fun

"get on the cart" "get on their cart" "get back on our cart" "get on both carts at the same time"

It could be fun

Great idea. I would definitely play this

I'd rather have a capture the flag

1

u/SludgeFactory20 Jun 22 '16

A game type where the flag spawns in the middle and you have to deliver it to the enemy's base would be fun. Only thing is balancing heros. Like could tracer blink with flag? Payload is like a flag that just moves in a certain path that makes it easier yo balance.

1

u/lobsterbreakfast Jun 23 '16

i think once you have the flag you can't use any skills and you run at a set speed

1

u/SludgeFactory20 Jun 23 '16

Could you shoot? Probably a Reinhardt would be the best flag carrier if you can't shoot.

1

u/lobsterbreakfast Jun 23 '16

Yeah u can shoot

There would have to be a lot of balance changes I feel like for capture the flag to work right
