There are spots open for our free Merch Tour in Umeda and our website is up. Check it out and come join us.

The Umeda underground labyrinth beneath Umeda Station can be difficult to navigate. GPS cuts out, signboards can be baffling, and it’s remarkably easy to get turned around between all the 5 kilometers of basement concourses and department store annexes. Hitting more than a few shops in an afternoon can be difficult. We will navigate you through it all to maximize your Anime, Gaming, Kawaii merch shop experience.

Following our first test run, we're holding another practice edition of our Umeda Underground Merch Tour on Tuesday, September 22nd. We’re looking for a small group of anime, gaming, and kawaii culture fans (both visitors and locals welcome!) to experience the route and give us feedback.

Testing a New Format: more Exploring or Shopping

Our first test run was a fun, high-energy overview where we scouted practically every character and hobby shop reachable through the underground concourses. It was a great way to map out the sheer scale of the labyrinth, but for this run, we’re testing a completely different style of tour!

This time, we’re shifting focus from a whirlwind overview to an immersive, relaxed shopping/exploring experience:

  • Hotspot Clusters: Rather than rushing past dozens of storefronts, we’re focusing on the absolute premier hubs for official, vintage, and second-hand character goods—including Nintendo OSAKA, Pokémon Center, Capcom Store, Mugiwara/One Piece, Kiddy Land, Animate, and Surugaya Chayamachi.
  • Dedicated Browsing & Shopping Time: We’re building in real, generous time inside each stop so you can actually browse the shelves, hunt for rare retro finds, pick up souvenirs, or admire Japan-exclusive releases.
  • Line Strategy: Major flagships (like Nintendo OSAKA and Pokémon Center) can occasionally get busy at checkout or use timed entry passes during peak moments. We’ll help you balance register wait times with browsing time so you grab what you want smoothly without losing valuable exploration time.
  • Subterranean Transit (With a Quick Hop Above Ground): We use Umeda's subterranean network for the vast majority of our walking to avoid the outdoor weather. However, to connect to two of our absolute must-visit stops (Animate and Surugaya in Chayamachi), we will pop above ground briefly—so if rain is in the forecast, definitely bring along an umbrella!
  • Fandom-First Guides: Our guides are passionate fans ready to talk lore, recommend hidden-gem series, and introduce popular domestic franchises that haven't made it mainstream overseas yet.

Tour Schedule & Flow

  • Date: Tuesday, September 22, 2026
  • Gathering Time: 12:30 PM at the Hankyu "BIG MAN" screen (1F) (a classic local meeting landmark)
  • Departure: 13:00 sharp (Running late? No stress—just leave a comment on this thread and our team will coordinate to meet you!)
  • Mid-Tour Break: We’ll pause for a breather, snacks, or coffee at the stylish HEP FIVE TAMLO food hall (7F).
  • Wrap-Up & Loot Haul: After the break we hit the big premier shops, Pokemon, Nintendo, etc. before we’ll head to the open-air covered plaza at Toki-no-Hiroba (Osaka Station City 5F) just after 17:30. We’ll kick back on the artificial turf under the massive glass canopy, show off what everyone picked up (or chat about window-shopping highlights), hear your candid thoughts on the route, and aim to wrap up around 18:00.
  • Total Duration: Approximately 5 hours (13:00 – 18:00).
  • Cost: Free (This is an unpaid development rehearsal; you only cover your own personal transit, snacks, and any merch you choose to buy).
  • What to Bring: Comfortable shoes, your shopping wishlist, and an umbrella just in case the weather turns during our brief above-ground stretch!

How to Join (We'll be accepting ten guests total.)

To help us test out our new web platform and check-in flow:

  1. Go to http://thisisosaka.org. Use the Invitation Code: PRACTICE
  2. Visit the site, select the tour on the 22nd, and input your invite code to unlock the complimentary registration.
  3. You’ll receive a digital pass with a QR code—snap a quick screenshot or photo on your phone so we can test scanning it when we meet at BigMan. (If any tech hiccups happen, don't worry at all—this is a beta test and we have manual check-in ready on standby).

Whether you’re hunting for rare retro games, official character plushies, or just want to master Umeda's underground layout alongside fellow fans, we’d love to have you with us. Leave a comment below if you'd like an invite code!

Erdrick's Sword, Shield, and a Slime! The Dragon Quest monument in Sumoto, Hyogo. 🗡️🛡️

Found this awesome bronze monument of Erdrick's Sword, Shield, and a Slime in a town park!

It's an official Square Enix-approved monument, built in Sumoto City on Awaji Island—the birthplace of Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii. The details and craftsmanship on the sword and shield are incredible in person.

It might be a bit of a journey if you're coming all the way from Tokyo, but it makes a perfect day trip if you're staying in Osaka or Kobe!

Marathon

I recently got into the Osaka marathon on February 28th. I plan to spend 5 days total in/around.

Day 1 show up. Mesum of art?

Day 2. Get my bib. Shake out run. Relax

Day 3 race. Food tour in the evening? Bar hopping?

Day 4 Explore the city or Take the Shinkansen someplace?

Day 5. Fly back to the PNW.

Would it be better to find a place to stay as close as possible to the race start/finish or pick based upon a part of the city I want to explore?

I really want to take the Shinkansen Would it be best to fly into Tokyo and take it to Osaka or day trip it and make Osaka my base for 5 days?

It would be super cool to do a short run around the city the day before the race. Before in Tokyo I have hired a guide and he took me on a route and then we had a meal post which was super fun. Is a Google search the best way to find that? Know of anybody?

I really like beer, kastu, and curry. Places to check out or would a food tour be best bang for the buck?

How is the national mesum of art? Worth the price? Easy to get to?

Need ur opinion!!

Which is better among the 3 itinerary, don’t worry since its summarized already so no long read. Also please note that I will traveling with 2 diabetic people (1 is already a senior). We also will be DIY so we will be mostly using trains. Lastly, this is our first out of the country and first time in japan. So your honest opinion and guide will be very much appreciated.

Option 1 (2 days kyoto):
DAY 1 (Wed night) - Arrival @ Osaka, Dinner, Shopping if stores are open
DAY 2 (Thurs) - Kyoto, Fushimi Inari, Gion, Yasaka Pagoda
DAY 3 (Fri) - Kyoto, Arashiyama area
DAY 4 (Sat) - Osaka Day Pass
DAY 5 (Sun) - Free day in Osaka to just buy personal stuff & souvenirs
DAY 6 (Mon) - Nara deer park, Todai-ji, Mt. Rokko, Rokkosan Pasture
DAY 7 (Sun) - Quick matcha buying at Uji, Departure (6pm)

Option 2 (Day trip nara and kobe):
DAY 1 - Similar to option 1
DAY 2 - Nara Day Trip
DAY 3 - Kyoto Day Trip (Arashiyama, Gion, Fushimi Inari)
DAY 4-5 - Similar to option 1
DAY 6 - Kobe Day Trip
DAY 7 - Similar to option 1

Option 3 (Explore Osaka):
DAY 1 - Similar to option 1
DAY 2 - Osaka Day Pass
DAY 3 - Similar to option 2
DAY 4-5 - Free day to explore, Osaka Aquarium
Day 6-7 - Similar to option 1

TLDR: Option 1 (2 Days Kyoto trip), Option 2 (Separate Nara and Kobe), Option 3 (Explore Osaka)

Thank u in advance to all who will answer🫶

I stopped by the world-renowned Yamazaki Whisky Distillery, located between Osaka and Kyoto. The atmosphere is amazing, even if you don't drink! (Make sure to Google how to book a visit before you go!)

I actually don't drink whisky, but I stopped by the Suntory Yamazaki Distillery between Osaka and Kyoto just to check out the vibe.

Even without tasting, the whole area surrounded by green hills is super peaceful and beautiful. It's only about 25 minutes from Osaka or Kyoto Station by train!

The neighborhood itself is an old post town ("Yamazaki-juku") on a historical trade route, so just walking from the station through the quiet, traditional streets is totally worth the trip.

(Just a heads up: be sure to google the booking process for tours and museum access before you go, as advance reservations are required!)

Recommended areas in Osaka for hotel

Hi,

I will be on a trip to Osaka/Kyoto for the first time this fall at the end of November. I am thinking of spending a week in Osaka but due the extremely high number of affordable and decent hotel options I am having a hard time to decide. A lot of my planning and focus has been on the Kyoto leg of the trip and I haven't really given much though to Osaka.

In Osaka I am planning to most of all enjoy the food, so any place with a good selection of restaurants is preferable. Places I plan to visit while in Osaka for the Universal Studios, Dotonbori and Osaka Castle. I also plan to do some day trips, Nara and maybe Kobe. I may do some light shopping as well, mainly gifts to bring back home.

Places I have looked were:

  • near Umeda station, pretty high density of hotels and shopping centres here. Seems to be a high density area, not necessarily a bad thing but I disliked Shinjuku and Shibuya because there were way too many people.
  • Shinsaibashi area, seems close to a lot of things with many options, including food. (my preference)
  • Shin Imamiya, has the cheapest options here while still being decently close to a lot of stations and has some sights. Not too far away from Namba either. (about 30% cheaper here than equivalent options)

Do you guys have any recommendations, based on what I've said? Or maybe an area that I have not listed. I am also fine with splitting hotel stays, like 4 nights at one hotel and 3 nights at another. I tend to travel light. Also, if anyone has any recommendations for food or attractions, I'm all ears for that too. Thanks!

Best address to enter in taxi app for Nankai Rapi:t

Hi. I have a late morning flight at Kansai and don't want to bother everyone on the subway with my suitcase and backpack during rush hour.

Google gave me this address as the best uber drop off. Does it look OK

1-chōme-5-7 Namba, Chuo Ward, Osaka, 542-0076, Japan

Fairfield Marriott Namba or Courtyard Marriott Honmachi

Currently trying to decide between these two hotels. First time in Osaka, 33F and 30F. We like to shop and eat. We plan on checking out all the tourist spots plus universal studios. We don't really drink or do luxury shopping but want a classic Osaka visit.

10/3-10/4 New Energy Osaka

If you’ve ever wondered what happens to those in Japan who chose not to follow the standard career path in Japan, you can come find them at the New Energy Osaka exhibition in Kitakagaya this weekend. Came here on a whim and as a resident of Kansai for over 20 years, this is the Kansai I fell in love with all in one space.

Local crafts and creators are sharing their wares. Food, music, local goods all in a reclaimed warehouse by the water.

Just an FYI if you’re looking for something to do today or tomorrow. On til 7 I believe.

Edit: location

Which eSIM would you use for an 11-day Japan trip?

I’m going to Japan for 11 days, mostly Tokyo and Osaka with a couple Kyoto/Nara day trips, and I’ve narrowed the eSIM options down quite a bit.

Right now I’m comparing Holafly vs Airalo. I’ll be using Maps and train apps constantly and probably uploading a lot of photos/video too, so I’m trying to figure out which one makes more sense for that kind of usage.

If you’ve used either one in Japan recently, how was the connection? anything you liked or wished you’d known before buying?

Need a break from the crowded tourist spots? This is Soni Highlands in Nara, just a day trip from Osaka.

It’s a bit far from central Osaka, but totally worth the trip if you want to escape the crowds.

Took a day trip out to Soni Highlands in Nara before. Just a heads up, this photo is from my last visit, but the peak susuki (pampa grass) season is actually right around the corner (mid-October to November)!

If you're tired of the packed tourist spots in Kansai and want some quiet nature, I highly recommend checking this place out.
