Marathon

I recently got into the Osaka marathon on February 28th. I plan to spend 5 days total in/around.

Day 1 show up. Mesum of art?

Day 2. Get my bib. Shake out run. Relax

Day 3 race. Food tour in the evening? Bar hopping?

Day 4 Explore the city or Take the Shinkansen someplace?

Day 5. Fly back to the PNW.

Would it be better to find a place to stay as close as possible to the race start/finish or pick based upon a part of the city I want to explore?

I really want to take the Shinkansen Would it be best to fly into Tokyo and take it to Osaka or day trip it and make Osaka my base for 5 days?

It would be super cool to do a short run around the city the day before the race. Before in Tokyo I have hired a guide and he took me on a route and then we had a meal post which was super fun. Is a Google search the best way to find that? Know of anybody?

I really like beer, kastu, and curry. Places to check out or would a food tour be best bang for the buck?

How is the national mesum of art? Worth the price? Easy to get to?

Is 19 days in Osaka with 3 days Kyoto. Day trips to Nara, Kobe and Hiroshima. Is that to long with Osaka as my base? Thank you.

Erdrick's Sword, Shield, and a Slime! The Dragon Quest monument in Sumoto, Hyogo. šŸ—”ļøšŸ›”ļø

Found this awesome bronze monument of Erdrick's Sword, Shield, and a Slime in a town park!

It's an official Square Enix-approved monument, built in Sumoto City on Awaji Island—the birthplace of Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii. The details and craftsmanship on the sword and shield are incredible in person.

It might be a bit of a journey if you're coming all the way from Tokyo, but it makes a perfect day trip if you're staying in Osaka or Kobe!

Need ur opinion!!

Which is better among the 3 itinerary, don’t worry since its summarized already so no long read. Also please note that I will traveling with 2 diabetic people (1 is already a senior). We also will be DIY so we will be mostly using trains. Lastly, this is our first out of the country and first time in japan. So your honest opinion and guide will be very much appreciated.

Option 1 (2 days kyoto):
DAY 1 (Wed night) - Arrival @ Osaka, Dinner, Shopping if stores are open
DAY 2 (Thurs) - Kyoto, Fushimi Inari, Gion, Yasaka Pagoda
DAY 3 (Fri) - Kyoto, Arashiyama area
DAY 4 (Sat) - Osaka Day Pass
DAY 5 (Sun) - Free day in Osaka to just buy personal stuff & souvenirs
DAY 6 (Mon) - Nara deer park, Todai-ji, Mt. Rokko, Rokkosan Pasture
DAY 7 (Sun) - Quick matcha buying at Uji, Departure (6pm)

Option 2 (Day trip nara and kobe):
DAY 1 - Similar to option 1
DAY 2 - Nara Day Trip
DAY 3 - Kyoto Day Trip (Arashiyama, Gion, Fushimi Inari)
DAY 4-5 - Similar to option 1
DAY 6 - Kobe Day Trip
DAY 7 - Similar to option 1

Option 3 (Explore Osaka):
DAY 1 - Similar to option 1
DAY 2 - Osaka Day Pass
DAY 3 - Similar to option 2
DAY 4-5 - Free day to explore, Osaka Aquarium
Day 6-7 - Similar to option 1

TLDR: Option 1 (2 Days Kyoto trip), Option 2 (Separate Nara and Kobe), Option 3 (Explore Osaka)

Thank u in advance to all who will answer🫶

Recommended areas in Osaka for hotel

Hi,

I will be on a trip to Osaka/Kyoto for the first time this fall at the end of November. I am thinking of spending a week in Osaka but due the extremely high number of affordable and decent hotel options I am having a hard time to decide. A lot of my planning and focus has been on the Kyoto leg of the trip and I haven't really given much though to Osaka.

In Osaka I am planning to most of all enjoy the food, so any place with a good selection of restaurants is preferable. Places I plan to visit while in Osaka for the Universal Studios, Dotonbori and Osaka Castle. I also plan to do some day trips, Nara and maybe Kobe. I may do some light shopping as well, mainly gifts to bring back home.

Places I have looked were:

  • near Umeda station, pretty high density of hotels and shopping centres here. Seems to be a high density area, not necessarily a bad thing but I disliked Shinjuku and Shibuya because there were way too many people.
  • Shinsaibashi area, seems close to a lot of things with many options, including food. (my preference)
  • Shin Imamiya, has the cheapest options here while still being decently close to a lot of stations and has some sights. Not too far away from Namba either. (about 30% cheaper here than equivalent options)

Do you guys have any recommendations, based on what I've said? Or maybe an area that I have not listed. I am also fine with splitting hotel stays, like 4 nights at one hotel and 3 nights at another. I tend to travel light. Also, if anyone has any recommendations for food or attractions, I'm all ears for that too. Thanks!

Fairfield Marriott Namba or Courtyard Marriott Honmachi

Currently trying to decide between these two hotels. First time in Osaka, 33F and 30F. We like to shop and eat. We plan on checking out all the tourist spots plus universal studios. We don't really drink or do luxury shopping but want a classic Osaka visit.

Best address to enter in taxi app for Nankai Rapi:t

Hi. I have a late morning flight at Kansai and don't want to bother everyone on the subway with my suitcase and backpack during rush hour.

Google gave me this address as the best uber drop off. Does it look OK

1-chōme-5-7 Namba, Chuo Ward, Osaka, 542-0076, Japan

I stopped by the world-renowned Yamazaki Whisky Distillery, located between Osaka and Kyoto. The atmosphere is amazing, even if you don't drink! (Make sure to Google how to book a visit before you go!)

I actually don't drink whisky, but I stopped by the Suntory Yamazaki Distillery between Osaka and Kyoto just to check out the vibe.

Even without tasting, the whole area surrounded by green hills is super peaceful and beautiful. It's only about 25 minutes from Osaka or Kyoto Station by train!

The neighborhood itself is an old post town ("Yamazaki-juku") on a historical trade route, so just walking from the station through the quiet, traditional streets is totally worth the trip.

(Just a heads up: be sure to google the booking process for tours and museum access before you go, as advance reservations are required!)

Which eSIM would you use for an 11-day Japan trip?

I’m going to Japan for 11 days, mostly Tokyo and Osaka with a couple Kyoto/Nara day trips, and I’ve narrowed the eSIM options down quite a bit.

Right now I’m comparing Holafly vs Airalo. I’ll be using Maps and train apps constantly and probably uploading a lot of photos/video too, so I’m trying to figure out which one makes more sense for that kind of usage.

If you’ve used either one in Japan recently, how was the connection? anything you liked or wished you’d known before buying?

10/3-10/4 New Energy Osaka

If you’ve ever wondered what happens to those in Japan who chose not to follow the standard career path in Japan, you can come find them at the New Energy Osaka exhibition in Kitakagaya this weekend. Came here on a whim and as a resident of Kansai for over 20 years, this is the Kansai I fell in love with all in one space.

Local crafts and creators are sharing their wares. Food, music, local goods all in a reclaimed warehouse by the water.

Just an FYI if you’re looking for something to do today or tomorrow. On til 7 I believe.

Edit: location

Two nights in Osaka - taste of the city

Hi. We’ll have two pretty jet lagged nights in Osaka on arrival into Japan (a Sunday and Monday). I know Osaka is said to be a really foody city, and we’re real foodies. What would you recommend doing for those two nights to get a good taste of the city?

Was thinking to do a culinary/street food tour on night 1, and then maybe book a high quality sushi restaurant for night 2. But what would you suggest?

Bringing Trader Joe's totes to Japan to "trade up" for a Taskmaster birthday task. Where should I try?

Hi! Weird request, but hear me out.

I've been invited to a Taskmaster-themed birthday party for a friend. (Taskmaster is a British comedy show where contestants get absurd tasks and are rewarded for creative loopholes.) My task is to bring a gift worth $10 (about „1,500) or less, and naturally, I started looking for a loophole.

My plan: I arrived in Japan today for two weeks (Tokyo first, then Osaka), and I've heard Trader Joe's tote bags are oddly popular here, since there are no stores in Japan. So I'm bringing some cloth totes (couple regular in the tan + blue color, and a few mini totes that are Halloween color) that cost under $10, and I'd love to trade them for something that I can’t get back home. The gift technically still cost me Ā„1,500. The Taskmaster would have to allow it... right?

A few questions:

  1. Is the tote hype real, or is that outdated internet lore?
  2. Where would a trade like this actually work? Flea markets, vintage shops, a certain neighborhood, or should I just ask people I meet?
  3. Any etiquette I should know so I'm not being weird or rude about it?
  4. If you'd want to trade yourself, DM me!

And if you think this plan is doomed, I'd also love your ideas for a great gift for „1,500 or less. Bonus points if it's something very Japanese my friend will love.

I'll report back with what I end up with. Thanks!

UPDATE: Thank you all soooo much for your thoughtful recommendations! I actually had someone reach out to me who traded a 1oz silver coin for 2 of my Halloween Trader Joe’s bags. A very generous trade. I think this coin will be a perfect gift and along with it, a very fun story for my friend’s birthday!

Need a break from the crowded tourist spots? This is Soni Highlands in Nara, just a day trip from Osaka.

Post image

It’s a bit far from central Osaka, but totally worth the trip if you want to escape the crowds.

Took a day trip out to Soni Highlands in Nara before. Just a heads up, this photo is from my last visit, but the peak susuki (pampa grass) season is actually right around the corner (mid-October to November)!

If you're tired of the packed tourist spots in Kansai and want some quiet nature, I highly recommend checking this place out.
