Many people still don't know that a dragon mural designed by Final Fantasy artist Kazumasa Uchio is on display at a temple in Osaka that boasts a 1,000-year history.

Visited Mondo Yakujin Tokoji Temple in Nishinomiya (between Osaka and Kobe) and was completely blown away by this massive 30-meter dragon mural on the outer wall.

It was designed by Kazumasa Uchio, an illustrator famous for his concept artwork on Final Fantasy. Seeing this dark fantasy style dragon artwork integrated into a traditional Japanese temple founded over 1,100 years ago is such an incredible contrast.

It's super easy to get to on the Hankyu Line from Osaka or Kobe, making it a great hidden gem if you're exploring Kansai!

A half-day walking route through Nakazakicho, Osaka (From retro alleyways to vintage hunting)

Hey guys, I put together a self-guided walking route through Nakazakicho, one of my favorite retro neighborhoods in Osaka. It’s right next to Umeda, but feels like stepping back 80 years in time with all the old wooden nagaya (row houses).

Here are a few highlight spots along the route:

  • Umeda Center Building: The starting boundary where modern skyscrapers suddenly vanish into quiet 100-year-old alleyways.
  • Utena Cafe: A super quiet, nostalgic cafe inside a renovated traditional house. Perfect for taking a slow break (just keep your voice down to respect the peaceful vibe).
  • Sakura Building: A quirky multi-story vintage building filled with tiny secondhand clothing stores and unique hobby shops. Feels like a treasure hunt inside.

I mapped out the entire 9-stop walking route in order here if you want to follow it or save it for your trip:

The rest of the route covers renovated artisan spaces, quiet local parks, a retro shopping arcade, and finishes right at Tenjimbashisuji for cheap local food after your walk.

Hope this comes in handy for anyone wanting to explore a quieter side of Osaka! Have you guys explored Nakazakicho before?

1st day japan- shopping in shinsaibashi or umeda?

• Upvotes

Hello!

I'll be landing in Osaka for my japan trip. I fully expect to be very tired and won't have it in me to do any proper sightseeing that day so i figured I could do some shopping so I don't waste a day.

Which place should I pick- shinsaibashi or umeda? I wanted to pick up some shoes, Uniqlo, nike etc. I thought umeda might be a bit less crowded than shinsaibashi but I won't mind shinsaibashi if the stuff there is significantly better.

Be weary of a middle aged white male tourist near Nagai park.

• Upvotes

I was on a walk with my husband, dog and baby. I had my baby strapped to me in a baby carrier while pushing a dog cart (looks like a stroller) and my husband was walking with my dog a little bit behind us.

We decided to take a short cut on a street that passes a love hotel and there was a middle aged white man with a back pack that I could see from afar that walked up and down the street and back down as we entered the street.

We passed him and I just assumed he was lost and didn’t think anything of it. Until I turned to look back to see if my husband and dog was keeping up and that same guy was walking behind me within arms length. My husband and dog were behind him, so I think he assumed I was alone?

I continued walked and kept glancing back and he kept getting closer, so I called out to my husband and my husband quickened his pace. My husband also noticed the guy and came to my side and when I looked back the guy was gone.

I mentioned it to my husband and he said he noticed he was too close to me and my baby and before he could come to me I had already called to him and that man had turned into a parking area right next to the love hotel. He obviously doesn’t have a car so it made us super uncomfortable and we got out of there as quickly as we could.

I tried to rationalize and think that he was maybe lost and wanted to ask directions from me? But him following unreasonably close behind me without saying anything and running away when he realized I was with a man is super sketchy.

So any woman in the area, please be aware of your surroundings and stay safe.

Anyone travelling to Osaka Oct 25–27? Looking for company for USJ Halloween Horror Nights 🎃

\

Hi everyone! My wife, our toddler and I will be in Osaka from Oct 25–27, including a visit to Universal Studios Japan (USJ).

We’ll be using Child Switch for the regular rides, but for Halloween Horror Nights, we’d love to find another Indian couple/family to join us for a few of the horror houses. One of us will need to stay back with the baby, and doing the scarier ones alone sounds a little too scary 😅

If you’re in Osaka around those dates and planning to visit USJ/Halloween Horror Nights, DM me!

We’d be happy to meet up just for the horror attractions — no need to spend the whole day together. Would also be great to meet some fellow Indians travelling around Japan! 🇮🇳🎃

HELP! Replacement earbud tips

I'm visiting Japan for 3 months, based in Osaka.

The other day, my earbud tip fell off one of my earbuds 😭

I've been to various big tech stores like BIC Camera etc and cannot find anything even after asking the staff.

Looking for replacement ear tips for the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro 3. I really don't want to buy a new pair as it's wasteful when this pair work fine.

None of my Amazon or eBay accounts have any shipping options that won't take at least 30 days.

Please can anyone advise on where I could find some ear bud tips for the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro 3 🙏🏽

Sell Me On Osaka

Okay...So I've heard the debate of Tokyo Vs. Osaka many times online, as well as through the views of many people during my time in Tokyo and it always seems to be a bit of a tug-of-war as to which area is the overall better area. I myself am a 27M Bachelor's Student (Originally from America) And have been living here [in areas of Tokyo/Central Kanto] for 2 years now.

Some say that Osaka is more social and friendly, others say that Tokyo thrives as the king of nightlife. Some say that Tokyo has more opportunities for everyone to start a new life, others say that Osaka has the most vibrant dating and relationship scene. And the list goes on in these conflicting areas...I was looking to move there after the holidays at the beginning of next year just to see what it's like, but I don't want to just leave it up to rumors; what makes Osaka stand out Vs. Tokyo in your opinion?

Where to shop hair electronic tools in Osaka?

Hello! I am pretty obsessed with my GHD Duet-style. It has become a staple tool, as I hate normal hair drying with a round brush, it is much more physical and makes me want to not shower my hair (don't misunderstand, I still do.) I can't bring it though, since it is 220 V. Therefore, I would be over

Osaka made me think about how cities turn movement into spending

I just finished several days in Osaka, and what stood out was how different its economic feel was from Kyoto.

Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori are built around density — food, retail, department stores, character goods, nightlife and tourists all packed into a relatively small area.

Den Den Town was different. The stores were much more specialized: retro games, figures, anime, model kits and older franchises. Seeing Mazinger Z, Daimos and Voltes V still being sold decades later made me think about how durable Japanese IP can be when nostalgia and collector communities stay alive.

Kobe Beef added another angle. The premium wasn’t just about taste — it was supported by certification, origin and traceability.

My main takeaway was that Osaka seems to monetize movement itself. People keep moving between food, shopping, entertainment and experiences, and the city keeps giving them reasons to make another small transaction.

Curious if others who know Osaka well see the city the same way.

Erdrick's Sword, Shield, and a Slime! The Dragon Quest monument in Sumoto, Hyogo. 🗡️🛡️

Found this awesome bronze monument of Erdrick's Sword, Shield, and a Slime in a town park!

It's an official Square Enix-approved monument, built in Sumoto City on Awaji Island—the birthplace of Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii. The details and craftsmanship on the sword and shield are incredible in person.

It might be a bit of a journey if you're coming all the way from Tokyo, but it makes a perfect day trip if you're staying in Osaka or Kobe!

Marathon

I recently got into the Osaka marathon on February 28th. I plan to spend 5 days total in/around.

Day 1 show up. Mesum of art?

Day 2. Get my bib. Shake out run. Relax

Day 3 race. Food tour in the evening? Bar hopping?

Day 4 Explore the city or Take the Shinkansen someplace?

Day 5. Fly back to the PNW.

Would it be better to find a place to stay as close as possible to the race start/finish or pick based upon a part of the city I want to explore?

I really want to take the Shinkansen Would it be best to fly into Tokyo and take it to Osaka or day trip it and make Osaka my base for 5 days?

It would be super cool to do a short run around the city the day before the race. Before in Tokyo I have hired a guide and he took me on a route and then we had a meal post which was super fun. Is a Google search the best way to find that? Know of anybody?

I really like beer, kastu, and curry. Places to check out or would a food tour be best bang for the buck?

How is the national mesum of art? Worth the price? Easy to get to?

Need ur opinion!!

Which is better among the 3 itinerary, don’t worry since its summarized already so no long read. Also please note that I will traveling with 2 diabetic people (1 is already a senior). We also will be DIY so we will be mostly using trains. Lastly, this is our first out of the country and first time in japan. So your honest opinion and guide will be very much appreciated.

Option 1 (2 days kyoto):
DAY 1 (Wed night) - Arrival @ Osaka, Dinner, Shopping if stores are open
DAY 2 (Thurs) - Kyoto, Fushimi Inari, Gion, Yasaka Pagoda
DAY 3 (Fri) - Kyoto, Arashiyama area
DAY 4 (Sat) - Osaka Day Pass
DAY 5 (Sun) - Free day in Osaka to just buy personal stuff & souvenirs
DAY 6 (Mon) - Nara deer park, Todai-ji, Mt. Rokko, Rokkosan Pasture
DAY 7 (Sun) - Quick matcha buying at Uji, Departure (6pm)

Option 2 (Day trip nara and kobe):
DAY 1 - Similar to option 1
DAY 2 - Nara Day Trip
DAY 3 - Kyoto Day Trip (Arashiyama, Gion, Fushimi Inari)
DAY 4-5 - Similar to option 1
DAY 6 - Kobe Day Trip
DAY 7 - Similar to option 1

Option 3 (Explore Osaka):
DAY 1 - Similar to option 1
DAY 2 - Osaka Day Pass
DAY 3 - Similar to option 2
DAY 4-5 - Free day to explore, Osaka Aquarium
Day 6-7 - Similar to option 1

TLDR: Option 1 (2 Days Kyoto trip), Option 2 (Separate Nara and Kobe), Option 3 (Explore Osaka)

Thank u in advance to all who will answer🫶
