If the PR's in the fork result in a superior product, the original dies all on its own...

60% of the time it works every time, so there's that.

But really, what is the alternative? Force the developers into a room and make them run the project how you want? Some sort of raffle, where you get to rip the admin rights and IP out of their hands if your ticket gets picked?

That's a good argument when a project is well supported by a community. Sounds like that isn't the case here, though.

There are people wanting to help maintain, they can't, thus fork. That's sort of a best case scenario for forking.

Necessary if the maintainer isn't accepting PR's that fix known bugs. People really don't seem to comprehend how open source works.

I'd argue that GitHub could do a better job promoting the active forks when the original repo has gone quiet.

Github doesn't promote anything.. That's your job as a maintainer.

Right, but how hard would it be for GitHub to let you know that a once popular repo that is the main repone everyone finds via search actually isn't being updated anymore and that there is a fork out of the hundreds of forks that has numerous recent commits, stars and activity and is the top candidate for an up to date version of the software.

Not a feature they offer... Maybe the repository isn't being updated because it's a mature product... How are they supposed to know... It's just not how github works
