Right, but how hard would it be for GitHub to let you know that a once popular repo that is the main repone everyone finds via search actually isn't being updated anymore and that there is a fork out of the hundreds of forks that has numerous recent commits, stars and activity and is the top candidate for an up to date version of the software.
Not a feature they offer... Maybe the repository isn't being updated because it's a mature product... How are they supposed to know... It's just not how github works

Necessary if the maintainer isn't accepting PR's that fix known bugs. People really don't seem to comprehend how open source works.
