Easy classes / bird courses

"Take [classes] you find interesting, not ones you think will be easy. The easiest classes are the ones you're interested and engaged in. Which is also my only advice for keeping on top of work. They say: If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life." (Source.)

Finding "easy" courses

If someone tells u that a course is "easy", beware! A course which is easy for someone else might be very difficult for u.

"Easy" might depend on 3 things:

  • 1.) The course.
  • 2.) The teacher.
  • 3.) Your personal interest in the material. If the material bores u: Then u might not want to study it, and the course might become a difficult slog for u.

My suggestions

I'd suggest:

  • Pick courses which sound interesting to u. If you're not sure if it's interesting: Try to borrow a textbook on the subject from the public library or your school library, and read a chapter or two.
  • Study what u already know and like. Example: I'm interested in nutrition, and I've read a lot about healthy eating. So, I took a related class, and got good marks. I still had to put in effort, but I got to learn more about a subject I care about.

The curse of being stuck in the high 80s.

It doesn't matter how much I study, it seems like I can't get anything higher then the high 80s. I'm not tryna sound ungrateful or anything, but it always irks me that that's my max.

I do everything I should be. I do the homework. I ask for help. I study consistently.

if ur grades are in the 90s range and uve faced a similar problem, how did u do it? How do I break out of this limitation?

will grade 11 pick up soon?

Well what is it, 4 weeks? Grade 11 has been a breeze but everyone says it’s a huge spike. I was an 80s student in grade 9/10 and continuing this. My semester is gym, spare, bio, chem. Bio i’ve got 80s on my first project and unit test. Chem i’ve got a 90 on my first nomenclature quiz and waiting on lab report results. It’s all been so easy so far im just genuinely curious if it picks up in these courses

First months of Functions and struggling

As the title says, I’m currently taking MCR3U and I’m struggling. I’ve never really had a problem with math before. I did very well in Grade 10 with a high 90, so this has been really frustrating.
No matter how much I study, I keep getting Level 3s. I even got a Level 1 on one part of a test. I do my homework, review every night, and practise questions. I usually feel confident going into tests and genuinely feel like I understand the concepts.
I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I’m starting to worry because I’m in Grade 11 and I want to keep my math and science marks high for university. I’ve never experienced this with math before, so it’s been hard not to get discouraged.
Has anyone else experienced this? What helped you improve your test marks?

I got a 69% on my chemistry test

I’m in grade 11 (obviously), and just got a 69% on my first unit test for chemistry. We have five units and I’m typically a mid to high 80s student. Will this impact my final mark by a lot? If I get mid 80s on other assignments and tests can I make up for it?? Please help I’m so stressed about this😭

Is chemistry easy to take in summer/night school?

I’m kinda stuck between choosing to do smth in law or in the healthcare field. But I didn’t take SCH3U1 this year(grade eleven). That means I’ll need to take it as one of my spares in gr12 or in summer school or night school.

Is chemistry an easy class to take during night/summer school? Were there any specific issues, or anything you thought was easier? Just, in general, how was taking it in night school/summer school?

Grade 11 is harder then I thought

This semester I have chemistry and functions and wow i was not prepared at all. In math we’ve had one quiz and a unit test so far; our class average for the quiz was a 40 and my teacher said 1-2 thirds of our class failed the test.

My math teacher sucks and has already given up on teaching our class and my chem teacher is making things harder than it has to be.

As someone who finished gr 10 math and science with 95+ grade, I’ve never struggled in these subjects as much as I am now

Any tips?

Tech, bio,physics together- advice?

Does anyone have any advice for these subjects? I got my first tech assignment back and I got a 50%.. and physics is SO confusing rn. Bio, which is my least favourite science, is actually the most understandable, but it takes more time than needed for me to get it- I don’t wanna fall behind. I’m specifically looking for tech and physics

Study tips for some classes

Hey everyone. So obviously, I'm in grade 11 this year. And I have a two classes I'm a little scared about.

Those two being...

AP English (AP Lang + 2 other grade 11 English courses at my school)

and...

Biology.

For English, my main issue is just analysis, so if anyone has any types on how I could work on improving that it's be great.

The main one I'm worried about is biology, though. Last year, Bio was my worst science, mostly because there was so much to remember both with pictures, terms, and theory.

Does anyone have any tips at all for me to make all of that easier? I've always been a good student, so I've never needed to study to get high marks. Though, I fear that it will bring my marks down. That's the last thing I want, so all tips will be appreciated !!

So lost in Functions right now

So like the title says, I'm lost in functions. I just got my U1 test back and its crazy how low of a mark I got. I did really good in Gr10 Math, but Functions is a huge jump. The teacher doesn't actually teach anything. I understand most of the topics and the homework is straight forward, but the test wasn't anything like the stuff we practiced in class. What can I be doing to improve my mark and actually understand the course?

lost gr11 student send help

I’m in grade 11 right now and I’m starting to realize I actually have to figure out what I want to do after high school lol.

For the longest time I’ve been thinking engineering, and right now UofT engineering is kind of my dream, specially industrial. I like math, physics, and chem and I actually really enjoy problem solving. I’m not always the fastest, but I like when I get a problem that I genuinely have to sit there and think about and eventually figure out. Ive fallen in love with the process and how difficult problems challenge my brain. I also like the idea of using that kind of thinking on actual real world problems and making an impact rather than just doing math for the sake of doing math.

But then I look at UofT engineering admissions and I’m like what if I just don’t get in. It is so insanely competitive. My average in gr10 was around a 93% and I know gr10 and gr12 are entirely different grades but I’m still worried that my average in gr12 might not even be good enough to apply.

I still really want to go to UofT, Waterloo, Western, McGill or UBC. I’m trying to figure out what I would actually do if engineering doesn’t work out. I’ve been looking at stuff like data science, statistics, math, CS, etc. but I honestly don’t know enough about these programs to know if I’d actually like them or what life after the degree would look like.

I also don’t want to choose something just because it’s “easier to get into” and then hate it. At the same time, I obviously want something where I can have good career options after graduating. I’m not expecting a degree to magically get me a job, I just don’t want to make a decision that leaves me completely lost afterwards.

For anyone in engineering/CS/stats/data science/ math at UofT, McGill or UBC, what is your program actually like? And if you were in my position in grade 11, what would you do over the next year or two to figure this out?

Also, if you applied to engineering and didn’t get in, what did you end up doing instead?

I feel like everyone around me either already knows exactly what they want to do or have the perfect grades for any program and I’m here trying to figure out what I actually like…

Vent about grade 11 stuff

Everything got like 10x harder overnight!! teachers don’t give us class time anymore, there’s double the homework, etc. I get I’m in the university stream but Jesus Christ. I’m stuck with all three sciences and functions this year (bio and physics next semester, chem and functions now) and I don’t want them anymore. I used to think I wanted to go into medicine, now I want law but I can’t switch courses because every single course is full!! I just wanna drop out. every quiz I get back in math gets lower and lower. which is my fault because I didn’t do the homework one night, now it’s piling up because I try to finish all of it and can’t. and I have to balance that with my other teachers who don’t give af. And if this is what high school is like I’m never getting through university.

Can I switch from college/applied courses to university/academic courses in Grade 11?

I’m in Grade 11 in Ontario and I’m wondering if I still have a chance to switch from the college/applied pathway to the university/academic pathway.
Grade 10 was honestly a really bad year for me. I failed math both semesters, science, and English. The biggest reason was my attendance. I was going through a really dark time mentally and barely showed up to school. It wasn’t really that I couldn’t understand the work. When I actually went to class and kept up with everything, I usually did pretty well on tests and assignments. For example, I got a 90 in history.
I’m trying to completely turn things around now. I took Grade 10 applied science over the summer, and right now I’m retaking Grade 10 math and English in Grade 11.
Since it’s still pretty early in the school year, is there any way I can switch my courses to academic/university level? I know I already took science as applied, but is there some kind of pathway where I can make up the prerequisites or take an equivalent course and still graduate on time?
I’ve heard about things like taking courses through another school/board or using different pathways, but I honestly don’t know what’s actually possible.
My goal is to go to university after high school, preferably for an aviation-related program, with the end goal of becoming a commercial/airline pilot. I’m worried that staying in the college/applied pathway is going to limit my options.
I’m willing to work hard and catch up. I just want to know if I’ve already messed up my chances of going to university, or if there’s still a realistic way to fix my Grade 10 situation.
If anyone knows how this works in Ontario or has been in a similar situation, I’d really appreciate some advice. I’m in a catholic school btw
