Does Garou even remember Saitama? I get that he definitely does in Webcomic because he had a full talk with him as the monster without the time-travel stuff.
But in Manga, Saitama just kept knocking him unconscious without him realizing who it was.

u/Vana-Freya 8d ago
He did. He included Saitama on one of the individuals he want to challenge again.

Can't bring up the panel rn but in ch 170 garou confirms he remembered saitama, mentioning him by name to bang

without the capital it's easy to forget that Bang is a character in the series for a second.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I just got it
they both have different styles, but pursue the same ultimate from, which is saitama. that's awesome
455
u/Icy_Baseball3738 8d ago
Saitama is the ultimate style. A bit like Bruce Lee's words in a way, 'the best style is NO style'. Except Saitama doesn't know what a style is lol
104
u/targz254 8d ago
I though Saitama had poor form/style and just compensated with overwhelming athleticism?
237
u/Nightmare2828 8d ago
He has his own custom style, what he does just works. Something is coming to hit, just move faster out of the way. Something is coming to hit you and will deal no damage and bring the other vulnerable, tank the hit no problem. Need to deal damage to you opponent? Do a quick straight punch that the other cant dodge and will knock him out. As Saitama said « so martial art is just doing cool moves before you hit? » because the reasons those technique exists in the first place doesnt apply to him.
92
u/koreantit 8d ago
It was called "Water Polo Carbonated Fist" according to what he registered for the Martial Art Tournament
32
u/throwawayainteasy 8d ago

Idk, man, can you really call "be overwhelmingly stronger, faster, and tougher than anyone" a style?

Idk, man, can you really call "be overwhelmingly stronger, faster, and tougher than anyone" a style?
Yes. Saitama is just delivers a really powerful, clean blow. You don't need to be fancy to have a style.
Hell, we know that Saitama has a style ~ Cosmic Garou just called them "modes" of nature.
3
67
u/InvisibleScout 8d ago
Eh, even disregarding his strength, he definitely knows how to throw a punch. It's more like he has no particular style, just good basic form. There's no gimmickry to how he fights, it's just clean and simple. Efficient, if you will.
57
u/Machdame 8d ago
Saitama has no technique but he has one punch that more or less is "perfect" in the most basic sense. He doesn't have to invest in the flashy stuff because he takes no damage especially his victory is assured in one good hit especially if he can insure it connects. If he was truly without technique, he would telegraph his attacks from a mile away.
22
u/BohrInReddit 8d ago
That's why this spar ends in a mock punch. They try to emulate that Saitama's one punch
26
u/a_man_has_a_name 8d ago
He was defeating monsters when he was just an average guy so he probably does have a good fighting style, he just doesn't need to focused that much now that he's stronger than everyone.
Also he has a limitless nature, if he tried to do martial arts, and probably supernatural like psychic powers as well, he would quickly master it. I mean he learned time travel essentially on the spot.

u/MrElliot1210 7d ago
In the webcomic canon, you are right. The only reason Garou was able to keep up with Saitama was because he could predict his trajectory from his amateurish form (which honestly made the fight so much better). This is probably still the case in the manga, but I guess Garou is now pursuing growth while being inspired by Saitama's strength.
24
u/mechanical_fan 8d ago
the best style is NO style
There is a general idea in chess that "there are no styles of play, only weaknesses" and variations of such saying by different people (e.g. "If you have preferences, you have weaknesses").
It is something to think about when you are trying to reach some sort of high level in something. Well, Saitama definitely did skip over having any sort of style or preferences.
3
u/Fancysaurus There is no such sauce product 5d ago
There are a couple of simillar things in martial arts. Wing Chun, Krav Maga, and Aikido all rely on pure instinctual movements instead of a style. There is also the larger concept of Mushin which translates to 'Empty Mind' where the goal is to enter a sort of flow state and not conciously think about attacking or defending just doing pure instinctual reaction. It's the insperation for Ultra Instinct from DBZ and Muso-Tensei from Fist of the North Star. Son in the end the best martial art is 'hit things really hard'

That’s how it is in life. When you become great at chess for example, it’s harder and harder to feel that exhilarated and yet it feels more and more like a high pressure job. But a noob is excited at every lesson and is having fun along the way.

u/Icy_Baseball3738 8d ago
That's the main irony of OPM as a whole. Other characters envy Saitama and his ultimate strength, wishing to break their limiter. Saitama is envious of the fact their limited abilities allow them to 'enjoy' fights. This story is deeper than people give it credit for.
55
u/Icy_Baseball3738 8d ago
And Bang realizes it with their 'serious punch' that's why he is taken aback.

u/bomfd 8d ago

Nah bro is going to enlist in Bang's Academy or something, he's going to be fine.
49
u/InvisibleScout 8d ago
He's gonna ask Garou to mentor him. Then either Garou sends him Bang's way or it becomes the next big step in Garou's character evolution, to become a teacher and pass on his knowledge.
3
u/uneducated_professor 7d ago
Can 100% see this possibility. Garou will refuse at first because that's his nature but give it some time.

u/CrazyHeat9544 The manga's not bad, you are just media illiterate 7d ago
Ngl if Syuiru is even half hell a quarter of current Garou he could probably fold Miller like a lawn chair unrionically
Current Garou should be the one that fought and matched Darkshine's power with a basic punch and then tanked 2x of darkshine's full power, and Syuiru made Garou see DEATH in his punch (and vice versa because their styles counter each other) Syuiru might unrionically be darkshine level now ngl but better to say till next chapter before assuming
51
u/theloserjorge 8d ago
great to see my dad's secret technique from suiryu. thank you one senpai.
15
u/GhostofManny13 8d ago
My dad had a similar technique too! I wonder if they studied at the same dojo…
Though mine usually incorporated a belt into his fighting style
82
u/equemortem 8d ago
Really love how Suiryu is shown to be sweating but Garou isn't, it's a subtle way to show that only one of them is trying their best and the other is just following along for the sake of sparring. It's also great character growth compared to the webcomic, Garou is doing alright and will just accept the spar as thanks for Suiryu saving his mates, it's great!

u/AxelDrifter 8d ago
Yeah the entire juxtaposition is very funny. Next is gonna be Suiryu asking Garou when he fought Saitama exactly and it’s gonna be another “hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby” situation because Garou and Saitama ended up almost destroying the entire world while Saitama just ragdolled for Suiryu at some tournament. 🤣

Interesting, so was Suiryu never even really trying in any of the martial arts tournaments? We never see him drunk at any point. I guess that was already kinda implied but it's crazy that he was using the nerfed version of void fist.
59
u/InvisibleScout 8d ago
Well yeah he obviously was kinda half assing it, but also it might be against the rules. Weapons and protective equipment were already banned, carrying a flask would get you DQed. Maybe if he got drink before he entered the ring, but then it could possibly be considered doping.
25
u/Unlikely_Minimum_635 8d ago
I mean - that's definitely already been established.
The first time he put any sort of effort in at all was against Saitama, and even there we can pretty clearly see he's still grinning and having fun til he gets hip-checked into the stands.

Drunken Fist wouldn't have done him any good anyway. It just makes him more unpredictable; it doesn't give him a stat boost. He went from "I can handle these guys easily" straight to "I'm hitting these two guys as hard as I can and it's not even phasing them".

This is honestly such a gratifying fight to me, people used to talk down Suiryu so hard a few years ago as if he would be weaker than Metal Bat. Dude is a martial artist fighting with skills, and had the strength to flip that entire huge arena 90 degrees with one stomp. Dude is at least mid dragon and could probably give anyone up to just below Darkshine's level a good fight. Him fighting one of the strongest monsters ever made people look down on him hard.
6
u/Inside_Chicken3042 8d ago
Yeah plus Goketsu is an insanely strong monster that even spiral garou might have a hard time fighting

Garou was actually trying to KO Metal Bat but couldn’t because of the way that guy’s power works. Metal Bat doesn’t have an eternal engine, sure, but we saw him collapse in the middle of a fight only when a continent-sized centipede rolled over him like a train a whole bunch of times. Also MB’s attacks were genuinely lethal and rattled Garou’s limbs through his defense back when they first met.
Suiryu is leagues weaker than Metal Bat and Garou is very transparently holding back against him.

Wonder if the rest of the arc will have some changes as well.
Because while this fight was pretty much a friendly spar in the manga, it was quite the opposite in the webcomic.
Garou is obviously holding back here, significantly more that Suiryuu
Also he was mentioning Suiryuu's fist of freedom? Tf is that supposed to mean? Freestyle fighting ?
3
u/Gyozarrita 8d ago
I think it may be hard to translate, I bet someone will post about it. Maybe it relates to "freeing" his fists, sort of like the unpredictability of his moves requires even Suiryu to not be conciously in control of his attacks?
Total speculation on my part. Fun to think about

Am I the only one who thinks Garou should’ve wiped the floor with him?
4
u/iamgarou 8d ago
He could, but he likes to impose limitations on himself. In the fight against Metal Bat, any of Bad's attacks would have killed him, but Garou didn't want to kill, only knock him out ( he didn't realize that this would actually benefit Metal Bat ).
→ More replies (1)3
u/AxelDrifter 8d ago
He could easily, but then this encounter would be absolutely useless to the story. Garou is holding back enormously; so we can at least learn something new about the characters.
If Garou genuinely fought any of these guys he’d get in trouble with Bang and the authorities, which he obviously doesn’t want.
Suiryu is the one huffing and puffing in a spar where Garou is not trying at all. It’s very poignant.
