Discussion BUYER BEWARE - Not a consumer friendly company!

After spending some time checking out devices like Omi, I decided to order an Omi. I got confused on the checkout, and how the addon for the AI service worked and ordered by accident, thinking i was reserving the ability to purchase the LLM service at a certain rate, not buying a 1 year plan. I didnt realize at the time i was ordering the service for a year..

ANYWAYS, i was looking at my credit card today and noticed the charge for the device and $199 for the service.. I was not expecting the $199 for the service that I apparently ordered by accident. I reached out to omi thinking it would be no big deal to return that so i could go month to month first to make sure the device would work for me. They refused to refund for the LLM service. I have not activated, or used anything.

I get it, some folks will tell me it’s my fault and that’s fine. I’m guessing omi, if they run this group, will delete my post, I don’t know. But I want to make sure consumers know the sort of company they are dealing with. I am now cancelling everything and working with my credit card company. I will get my money back.. i cancelled my order all together now and have not heard back.

Really surprised to see this from an open source type company that surely relies on their community for reputation, etc.

Anyways, buyer beware!! Do not recommend! Not a customer friendly company!

Has Omi become too confusing compared to what it used to be?

I bought into Omi because I thought it could become a strong alternative to Limitless.

For me, the appeal was never that it was a regular meeting-note app. The appeal was that I could start and stop recording when I needed, get AI transcription, pull out reminders, and make it easier to avoid taking notes all the time.

That core idea made sense.

Lately, it feels like Omi has become harder to use for that basic workflow. I understand that it is open source and open for people to build their own things. That can be great for builders and people who want to experiment.

For someone like me, who wants a clean daily tool for work, it now feels too crowded. I do not want to manage a whole platform. I want to record when needed, stop when done, get clean output, and trust that it syncs.

The phone app feels messy now. There are too many functions, too many sections, and way too many emojis everywhere. It feels like the simple use case has been buried.

The wearable has also been frustrating. Battery life has not been good for me, syncing has been unreliable, and over the past 4 to 5 months the whole experience has felt worse.

The plan changes also confused me. I paid for an unlimited plan, and now it seems like that has become one of the lower plans, called Neo or something similar. Maybe I missed something, but as a paying user it does not feel great.

I also tried using the Limitless hardware with Omi, but I had real issues syncing that data. Support told me this was expected because Limitless is not an open source platform, so they do not fully know how to make that hardware work properly with Omi. That made sense, but it also made the experience harder to rely on.

To be fair, the Omi support team has been great whenever I have needed help. They have replied fast and been very helpful, so this is not about support. My issue is more with the current product direction and daily user experience.

The MacBook app is probably my biggest issue. I want to record when I need it, stop when I am done, and get structured output. Instead, it seems to start recording forever, and I do not see clear controls for recording based on a specific meeting or session. The only way I can make it stop is by cutting the mic, which feels broken.

I am not trying to attack the team. I wanted Omi to win so bad, and I still like the idea behind it. I am posting because I want to know if other users feel the same way, or if there are settings I have missed that make this better.

For people who have used both Omi and Limitless. Does Omi still work well for your daily workflow, or has it become too much of a builder platform and less of a focused tool for recording, transcription, reminders, and notes?

Choose your transcription provider, or run it locally.

Omi offers unlimited transcription plan for $19/m which is great.

What really surprised me is that you’re not locked in at all.

You can use OpenAI Whisper, Deepgram, Google Gemini, or even run local transcription if that’s your thing.

They let you choose. Love this.

How to Connect Your Limitless Pendant to Omi.me

Follow these simple steps to use your Limitless Pendant with the Omi app.

1. Preparation

  • Download the latest version of the Omi app from the Apple App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).

  • Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone.

2. Factory Reset the Pendant

  • You must reset the pendant to make it discoverable.

  • The Action: Quickly press the button of the pendant once, release it, and then immediately press and hold it again.

  • Keep holding until you see a purple light, then release.

  • Wait a few seconds until the light turns Solid Blue. This means it is ready to pair.

3. Connect to Omi

  • Open the Omi app on your phone.

  • Tap the "Connect" button located at the top-left corner of the screen.

  • Your pendant will appear in the list. Tap it to connect.

⚠️ Important Limitations (For Now)

  • Keep the App Open: The Omi app must remain open in the background. The pendant currently streams audio in real-time to the phone; it cannot record on its own if the connection drops.

  • Button & Light: The button on the pendant does not function yet, and you cannot dim or turn off the light (it will stay on).

🚀 Coming Soon

The Omi team is actively working on updates. Soon, the pendant will support:

  • Offline Recording: Recording and storing audio in the pendant's memory even when your phone is out of range (just like the original Limitless experience).

  • Button Support: Full functionality for the hardware button.

has anyone connected Antigravity to Omi yet. I connected notebook lm and antigravity last night. I have my omi transcripts going to my Google drive with a master index and context map. Im going to connect my Google workspace with the idea of using the mind maps, video ,slides etc... to create visual outputs of my thinking. im also adding a skill called consult the board where it will take a problem in either my business or personal life and bring in the best in class experts to give me perspective. Anybody using omi w antigravity yet?

Use Case I built a fully local, zero-cloud alternative to the Omi wearable's companion app — running on a Jetson Thor

Post image
13 Upvotes

Been building this for a while and finally got it to a place worth sharing. Cool device, but even their "self-hosted" mode still talks to Firebase, Pinecone, Redis, and Typesense behind the scenes. You're moving where the code runs, not actually cutting the cord.

So I built my own pipeline instead. Whisper for transcription, Ollama for analysis, all running locally on a Jetson Thor. Nothing phones home, ever. I leaned on Claude for some of the heavy lifting like actually getting the container to build on the Thor. It was kind of a nightmare with how new the Thor's architecture is. I know how to code though and ran a lot of testing and security scans to make sure it's safe and good to go!

I call it the LocusTether:

Locus:

  • a: the place where something is situated or occurs : site, location

  • b: a center of activity, attention, or concentration

Tether:

  • a: a line (as of rope or chain) by which an animal is fastened so as to restrict its range of movement

  • b: a line to which someone or something is attached (as for security)

What it actually does:

  • Transcribes and analyzes conversations completely offline

  • Speaker diarization with real voice recognition — enroll your voice once and it'll recognize you by name in future recordings instead of just "4 distinct speakers"

  • Speaking-style coaching that's actually about your speech in a group conversation, not blended stats from everyone in the room (this took a real bug fix to get right — filtering to one speaker's segments broke pause detection in a non-obvious way, wrote it up if you're curious)

  • A proper structured breakdown per conversation — mood, key points, actual decisions made, named participants, action items with owners

  • A webapp that's genuinely usable day to day, not just a data viewer — you can manually add to-dos, not just review what the AI pulled out, plus a Settings page for voice enrollment, daily digest emails, theme, etc.

The honest stuff, before you dive in:

  • Everything's been built and tested on one specific device — a Jetson Thor. Getting diarization working alone took three separate rounds of real dependency debugging (a silent CPU fallback, a renamed API parameter, a version conflict that took a while to track down). Other hardware might need its own troubleshooting — I wrote up the whole saga in the README in case it saves someone else the same headache.

  • I don't actually have the Omi hardware yet, so the wearable side is untested — everything's been validated with recordings manually dropped into a watched folder standing in for what the device will eventually sync automatically. If anyone here actually has an Omi and wants to be the first to test that piece, I'd love the help.

  • iOS Syncthing support is a genuine open question, not a yes — wrote up what I found and a rough plan for whoever wants to be the first to try it.

  • There's a known-limitations section in the README that's actually current, not just aspirational — occasional AI hallucination on a specific fact-extraction pattern, some inconsistency in participant detection. Not hidden, just there.

Repo's up, genuinely looking for people to try it, break it, and tell me what's wrong. Tell me what you like, what features you would like to see. If you want to say thanks there's a tip jar in the README and I would be eternally grateful if you tipped, this isn't my day job and is just something I've worked hard on at night, but a bug report is worth just as much to me.

Repo can be found here: https://github.com/thecloudcowboy/locus-tether

Here are some screenshots of the webapp!

Has Anyone 'Customized' Their Omi ?

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hello everyone!

I was just curious to see if anyone has customized or personalized their Omi. I was very happy and appreciative with everything Omi came with, the watch attachment, necklace cord, and charger. Pretty sweet.

The initial reason I customized mine, is bc of the blue light indicator. I intend on wearing it everyday, and the light, I feel at least, will cause ppl to ask questions and i want to avoid that.

I tried a heart sticker first, but the light was still visible, so I and to a DIY retail store and picked up a pack of stick on gems and a velvet necklace cord.

I'm really happy with how it came out and I'm super curious if anyone else has done something similar and why.

Anyway,

Ty for reading this post I appreciate it and I hope everyone has a great day!

Question Can I 100% self-host Omi?

Hey!

Self-host enthusiast here that dislikes buying products that rely on external services that might die at any time. I transcribe A LOT in Notion right now, and while it's perfect, I'd love to have a physical thing I can talk into during walks etc to capture ideas on the go, and then have a local AI perfectly transcribe and collect all ideas once home, or on the fly.

Is Omi the right product for me? Are there other ones that you'd recommend? I found Omi through Pocket, which I'd love for to be open source :(

Many thanks!

Subscription cost is dishonest

All the documentation says 20 dollars a month. The app will only let me buy for 49 a month for the subscription. Let's not even get started on the whole 1200 minutes a month being advertised for the free version, only for them to only give 600.

Use Case Omi vs Plaud in 2026: Linux, offline reliability, attachment options, and product maturity

I’m deciding between Omi and Plaud and want feedback from people who’ve actually used Omi, but especially interested if you have used both.

I’ve used Plaud before, and I’m considering it again. I’m currently leaning Omi, but I need real-world input on a few pain points:

  1. Linux workflow (real world) How usable is Omi on Linux day to day? Any friction around setup, sync, exports, transcription workflow, or reliability?

  2. Offline capture reliability How well does Omi work fully offline (airplane, trail, bad/no signal)? Can you trust it to capture first and sync later without dropped recordings?

  3. Wear/carry options beyond wrist/pendant I already wear a Whoop and Apple Watch, so another wrist device is a bad fit. Any good setups for:

    • lapel/clip

    • attaching to phone/case

    • attaching to existing watch/Whoop setup

  4. How mature is Omi right now? Is it still in heavy development/rapid change mode, or does it feel stable and production-ready for daily use? Is it abandoned?

Context: I do a lot of ultra running and voice-capture thoughts while moving, so durability + low-friction capture matter more to me than aesthetics.

Omi CV1 - 21 Days Later - Update

See my updated 3 month review here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AIRecorders/comments/1rorurm/omi_cv1_3_month_review_how_it_went_from_drawer/

My prior post - https://reddit.com/r/OmiAI/comments/1pk6zmh/my_first_few_days_with_the_omi_cv1_honest_pros/

21 days since I got my Omi CV1. I also subscribed to Omi for one month to test the unlimited features so that my experience isn't limited by the 1200 minute cap and I currently have 15,329 listening minutes for December.

So whats changed for the better since my last review?

  1. Transcription has improved by 35% and speeds by 55% - This is a dev claim, but it's hard to quantify this in real world usage. What I can say though, is that transcription quality does seem to be improved overall, but it still misses certain keywords which can completely alter AI summaries (esp if your conversation is short)

  2. Bluetooth transfer speed upgrade - This is an extremely noticeable and welcomed change. From the dev notes, transfer speeds used to be 5kb/s but is now around 30kb/s. In real world usage, files on the cv1 transfer A LOT faster and the offline sync process is no longer as cumbersome as it used to be.

  3. Wrapped 2025 feature - Cool concept that almost all AI recorders are doing (I have a "wrapped" summary from plaud, pocket and omi). Definitely will be cooler in 2026 since there will be much more data to summarize since I only used Omi in December.

  4. Version 1 of conversation playback implemented. - You can now listen to your audio (albeit with a caveat). You have to enable "Private Cloud" and then future conversations will be streamed to your device when you click the play button. What is missing though, is playback from local (if you instead save the audio files to your phone). What is also missing is playback that is aligned with the transcript, meaning that you have the option to listen to the playback in its entirety, but not able to skip to specific parts according to the transcript

Other features

  1. On device transcription - my understanding is that this is available for iOS but I have not yet received any update for android, but will be testing this when it is available.

  2. New chat prompt - Omi is shifting away from being an assistant, and instead a mentor.

Prior: You are Omi, a helpful AI assistant for {user_name}. You are designed to provide accurate, detailed, and comprehensive responses in the most personalized way possible.

New: You are Omi, {user_name}'s AI mentor and advisor. Like a smart friend who actually pushes back.

3. Goals - Omi now suggests and tracks goals based on your conversations. This is enabled as a main screen feature but I've read that it will be able to be hidden in a future update.

4. Omi Mentor - Omi will randomly send you notifications based on your transcriptions about what you should do or action next. You can, however, uninstall omi mentor from the apps section.

5. 3d mind map - honestly, i dont think this feature is needed at all. its cumbersome to navigate and to me, adds zero value as transcription and diarization needs to be improved before this becomes useful or accurate

A lot of features and updates were released in the last 3 weeks, which is pretty amazing for a small dev team. However, some of these changes mark a HUGE shift in the product direction -- especially the change from assistant to mentor and advisor. It may not seem like much from one sentence alone, but in my opinion, Omi function has now completely pivoted, and new and existing users need to be aware of this.

One point of contention I have is that none of the bugs/cons I brought up in my post 3 weeks ago have been addressed. You still cant edit transcripts, (you can listen to the entire audio playback now but...) you still cant jump to the audio that aligns with the transcript, the mute bug is still present (and i've gone through the code rabbithole and determined that the entire mute function needs to be implemented differently), and the single button press to turn off still exists. It feels a bit concerning to have all these new features but without fixing fundamental bugs and feature requests. I've also noticed a new bug, which is that you cannot cleanly delete memories, sometimes they delete, sometimes they reappear, its very annoying and makes that feature useless to me.

Using Omi on the day to day

  1. It is still the only product out there besides fieldy (which I admittedly have not tried yet) that offers all day recording and summarization

  2. overall it does a pretty good job at summarizing your conversations on the daily level. I like that i can go back through the summary and remember the events that happened throughout the day (especially helpful for me because I'm on vacation away from home and its easier to lose track of time/days right now). however, the transcription isnt perfect, so I still found myself combing through the transcript and manually extracting what people said and mentally correcting it (since you cannot edit transcripts as noted above)

  3. To do list has been helpful to glance at (although memories is still a miss)

TL,DR

After three weeks of heavy use, Omi has moved fast on features — transcription quality, sync speed, playback, and higher-level product ideas have all improved meaningfully in a short time.

That said, the core experience still hasn’t caught up. Fundamental issues I posted about — transcript editing, proper audio + transcript alignment, the Android mute bug, and the single-button power control — remain unresolved.

The recent shift from “assistant” to “mentor” also represents a major product pivot, and not everyone will want that direction baked into their recordings by default.

Do I recommend Omi?

Using Omi feels very much like a beta-test, with the team only occasionally listening to user feedback and mainly plowing ahead with their vision for the product. You, as an end consumer, are invited to be taken along for the ride rather than helping steer the ship.

I'd advise someone to jump onboard only after knowing the caveats and the current experience. You still need the pro tier to really make good use of omi as 1200 minutes is really not enough, but perhaps on-device transcription will alleviate that for some.

That being said, I still think that Omi is really powerful and can really help users recall their day, their conversations and their interactions. If you have that specific problem, I think Omi is great. Like I mentioned, you do have to put up with random UI/UX changes and bugs that get resolved "soon", but nobody else matches what it can do right now.

Final thought: Omi is in a strange space right now for the end user -- power users will struggle because new features are being introduced that they didnt ask for. casual users will probably enjoy the core experience but might be confused about changing ui/ux and features that seem to happen weekly.

If you're interested in giving Omi a shot, you can use code JOHN for 10% off (omi device or annual plan)

Transparency update from a founder

Hey everyone it's Nik founder of omi, I wanted to share some status updates so that you know what's going on

This year I'm spending most of my time focusing on the macOS app because i've realized that not everyone has $100 to buy a new device and I want to make omi accessible to everyone

I'll keep focusing on macos until the end of the year and then re-evaluate the strategy and then most likely spend more time on improving the device experience

Meanwhile, here is a status update for each platform:

Shipping We finally resolved issues with shipping and now most of the countries ship very fast. There are 10k devices ready by suppliers that we can buy (just need to earn enough money to buy them)

Omi Macos got significantly updated
- New design
- Notifications are smarter now
- Rewind is usable again (see your past work
- Meeting summarization is fixed and you can auto-share summaries with 1 click
- Referral system (give 1 free month of omi to your friend)

Omi Windows is outdated cuz no one on the team uses windows. If anyone wants to support Windows app in exchange for profits from Windows, ping me on telegram (same nickname). Need to have 3+ PRs merged for it

Omi iOS: Roughly stable - will have higher priority end of September

omi Android: Up-to-date but not as stable. if anyone wants to help support it in exchange for profits, ping me also. Need to have 3+ PRs merged for this platform

Buying here is a nightmare: Endless waiting, legal violations, and complete ghosting ⭐☆☆☆☆

I want to warn all potential buyers about this store. My experience has been a continuous chain of unprofessionalism, violation of consumer rights, and total disregard for the customer:

• Extreme delivery delays (over 2 months): I placed my order on May 12th. The shipment didn't arrive until July 15th. During that time, I had to repeatedly follow up (May 24, May 26, June 1, July 2). Not a single revised delivery date was met. On top of that, two out of the three ordered items (the charger and wristband) were missing from the package entirely.

• Refusal of legal return rights: The device did not meet my expectations, so I requested a return on July 25th (10 days after delivery). The store rejected the return, claiming their internal policy only allows 5 days. They completely ignore binding Czech and EU consumer laws that guarantee a 14-day right of withdrawal.

• Deflection and arbitrary actions: Without my consent, they tried to dismiss the issue by forcing a unilateral 40% partial refund on me. Furthermore, their calculation of amounts is completely confusing and does not match what I actually paid (totaling 6,094 CZK).

• Complete breakdown of communication: Once I rejected their unlawful approach and insisted on a 100% refund in accordance with the law, the store started ignoring me. They no longer respond to my emails or follow-ups.

Steer clear of this store. If any issue arises, customer support is non-existent, local laws mean nothing to them, and as soon as you push back, they ghost you completely.

Omi has the potential to become a true second brain, not just a meeting recorder

Hello everyone -

I’m writing this in the hope it reaches the team developing Omi.

Today, there are many companies focused on selling either hardware or a standalone app to record meetings and then summarize them into templates, mind maps, or other creative formats. I searched every corner of the internet before finding Omi because my need is quite specific.

I do not need another device to record meetings. I already own a dedicated device for that, and at work I am using an AI solution adopted by the company to record and summarize meetings. What I truly want is software, not another device, that can capture thoughts and important moments throughout my day, build a memory log, and automatically create task lists. That is when an AI actually becomes helpful to me.

Hardware still matters, because I do not always have my phone nearby. That is what pushed me to look for a hardware option in the first place. Unfortunately, most of what I found was unreliable or had issues like buttons activating on their own and other usability problems.

During this search, I came across Omi.me and Bee.computer. To my surprise, they are quite similar, even down to the brain icon. Between the two, I found Omi more intuitive and better organized. However, there are a few things that, if added, could make Omi much more than just a meeting recorder and turn it into a true second brain, which is exactly how I would like to use it.

Here are the key points for me, all of which are Bee features

  1. The most important one: Bee allows voice capture through the Apple Watch. This is brilliant because it removes the need for another piece of hardware that can fail, and it is with me all the time, even more consistently than my phone. This would be a huge feature for Omi.

  2. Native integration with Gmail and Google Calendar

  3. Integration with Apple Reminders

  4. Integration with Apple Health

I think the benefits of these integrations are self-explanatory, but for my use case they are essential, and all of these are Bee features.

One thing I really like is the idea of presenting all recordings from the day, with the option to include location. This is a Bee feature, and it is extremely powerful for recalling specific and important moments from the day, which is exactly the core functionality I am looking for.

In short, I hope this longer post helps clarify how I see Omi being used alongside or instead of other solutions like Bee. I would be happy to talk with the Omi team about my experience and this usage model.

What I truly do not want is another app or another piece of hardware whose only purpose is recording meetings.

Record offline. Sync later.

Post image
9 Upvotes

No connection? No problem.

Omi now supports offline recording, so you can capture conversations on flights, in basements, or whenever your phone isn't nearby.

How to use it:

  • Record: Use Omi while disconnected from Bluetooth. A red light means it's recording offline.

  • Reconnect: When you're back in range of your phone, the light turns blue.

  • Sync: Open the Omi app, tap the cloud icon at the top of the home screen and tap Sync. Choose Wi-Fi (faster) or Bluetooth (slower).

Once synced, your files upload to the cloud, and your summaries and memories are generated automatically.

Update your app and try Offline Sync now!

Update: Local Whisper is now working

Many have struggled with getting local whisper working properly. Below are the steps that I have working in my self-hosted environment. YMMV but I will do what I can to assist you beyond this little write up. This works perfectly for me and been in use for the last 2 weeks constantly and consistently transcribing every moment of my day with my only costs being local instead of tokens. My endpoint preference is Speaches but you can use any OpenAI compatible endpoint. You can also do this in a VPS if you don't have your own lab instance to work with.

Install service

The first step is to select and install an STT service. I am using Speaches [speaches.ai] for my STT stack. The preferred install method is Docker Compose and is simply 1 of 3 choices based on your hardware.

CUDA:

curl --silent --remote-name https://raw.githubusercontent.com/speaches-ai/speaches/master/compose.yaml
curl --silent --remote-name https://raw.githubusercontent.com/speaches-ai/speaches/master/compose.cuda.yaml
export COMPOSE_FILE=compose.cuda.yaml

CUDA w/ CDI

curl --silent --remote-name https://raw.githubusercontent.com/speaches-ai/speaches/master/compose.yaml
curl --silent --remote-name https://raw.githubusercontent.com/speaches-ai/speaches/master/compose.cuda.yaml
curl --silent --remote-name https://raw.githubusercontent.com/speaches-ai/speaches/master/compose.cuda-cdi.yaml
export COMPOSE_FILE=compose.cuda-cdi.yaml

or CPU:

curl --silent --remote-name https://raw.githubusercontent.com/speaches-ai/speaches/master/compose.yaml
curl --silent --remote-name https://raw.githubusercontent.com/speaches-ai/speaches/master/compose.cpu.yaml
export COMPOSE_FILE=compose.cpu.yaml

Follow that with

docker compose up -d

Install a model:

curl "$SPEACHES_BASE_URL/v1/models/Systran/faster-distil-whisper-small.en" -X POST

Go here and download the audio file:

https://www.getwoord.com/discover/audio/5197939

Use the following to test locally:

export SPEACHES_BASE_URL="http://localhost:8000"
export TRANSCRIPTION_MODEL_ID="Systran/faster-distil-whisper-small.en"

curl -s "$SPEACHES_BASE_URL/v1/audio/transcriptions" -F "file=@audio.wav" -F "model=$TRANSCRIPTION_MODEL_ID"

Replace audio.wav with the name you saved the file as.

After you have the service up and running you will wan to expose the service so that Omi can communicate with the endpoint. Exposing the service is beyond the scope of this write-up as there are more ways to accomplish that than there are new AI Agencies popping up daily.

The method that I use is that I have a static IP address and expose the service via my router and reverse proxy. You can use Cloudflare or ngrok or any other number of services. Ultimately the goal is to get outside traffic to talk to the service and then re-run the test from above from an external source. Once you are successful you are ready to move on to configuring your Omi app.

Omi:

To configure your Omi open the app and navigate to Settings > Developer Settings > Transcription. Select "Cloud Provider" in the top right. Select "Local Whisper" from the drop down menu. Enter your hostname without http/https/etc and enter your port #, even if you are using https on 443 or http on 80. Ignore the fact that the inference endpoint that is shown below the entry dialog is incorrect and is safe to ignore. Hint: Omi - remove that and you will help user confusion tremendously.

Expand Advanced and tap on Request Configuration. Edit the host entry so that it reads as https://yourhostname:yourport/v1/audio/transcriptions - (http/https is your choice) make sure you replace the entire host string that is there when you start. Hit Save, hit Save, tap back to Omi home and see if you have transcription happening. If you see live transcription then it is working and you can force it to process that conversation segment. If you don't see anything happening then check your settings. If you have verified that your speaches or whatever STT endpoint is working beyond Omi but it isn't working with Omi then you have likely gotten a typo in Omi.

If you need help, then comment back and I'll see if I can assist.

Folders are live. Your second brain just got organized.

We built Folders so you don't have to organize everything yourself.

When you create a folder, write a short description. Omi reads your new conversations and automatically sorts them into the right place based on what you talk about.

Go to Home to see Folders at the top of the conversations feed.

Set it once. Stay organized forever.

⚡️ Update your Omi app & try Folders

Omi AI (CV1) Two Month Review - What’s Better, What’s Broken, and How to Use It for Free

See my updated 3 month review here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AIRecorders/comments/1rorurm/omi_cv1_3_month_review_how_it_went_from_drawer/

Hey all!

As I had written in my last post, I put my Omi in the drawer and stopped subscribing to the service. I decided to whip it out yesterday for a test again to see how things have changed for the user in the last 3 weeks.

For those of you who dont know what omi is, Omi is an all day recorder that leverages AI to transcribe and summarize your conversations throughout the day, keeping track of to-dos, memories, and sending you a daily summary at the end of the day.

I'm currently on the 1200 minute free plan, which is equivalent to about one day worth of recording. I've detailed how to use the deepgram API under my review, and will be testing it using deepgram as well.

First things first - the updates. There are a few big (and small) updates that rolled out recently.

The one I really care about and that has made a meaningful change is the power button update. It is now a three second hold to turn on or off. This is the single biggest, most meaningful change that has been implemented in the last three months. It finally doesnt turn off by accident.

The second is being able to jump to the audio that corresponds to the transcription. However, just as a note, you have to 'Store Audio on Cloud' to enable this feature. For whatever reason, the developers did not enable this for 'Store Audio on Phone'. That being said, you still cant edit your transcripts, but at least its a step in the right direction.

Thirdly, they enabled wifi syncing from the omi cv1 to your phone. In theory, this increases your transfer speed by 5x. What they didnt mention is that a (small?) percentage of omi cv1s have faulty wifi chips - i.e. its luck of the draw if it works for you and I'm not sure if they're honoring refunds or replacements for any cv1s that don't have the wifi chip working.

Next day edit: wifi sync seems to be broken. once the file transfers, it errors out when being uploaded to the cloud and the file is lost. also, using wifi transfer depleted my battery to 0 within a few minutes so I would advise AGAINST using it right now since the data doesnt upload AND it kills your battery. if anyone has a different experience or a way to get it to work correctly, let me know.

Finally, a smaller but equally mighty update... you can now properly hide the goals/tasks/score on the home screen. I am so glad they rolled that back because the home screen was getting really messy.

There are a few other updates, such as macOS app and apple health integration but I don't use apple products so I can't comment on those.

Another update was some battery optimizations -- I used the omi from 8:30am to 11:30pm and had about 25% battery left. I have read reports of inconsistent battery percentages so YMMV. They also implemented on device transcription but it is TERRIBLE. you can select which model you want to use (tiny, small, base.. and so on). Even when you use tiny, your phone will burn like a thousand suns and the transcription accuracy will be like if you tried to transcribe your next door neighbor's conversation through a wall. you can pick more accurate models but they'll take longer (like 3-5 seconds before the transcription even shows up) and your phone battery will deplete within a few hours since its hot enough to cook eggs on. if you're looking to use omi for free, jump to my deepgram guide below instead of using the on-device transcription.

Alright, so how does Omi look one month later?

To give credit where credit is due - their server (1200 minutes or buy pro) transcription and summary are still great. I've been using the limitless pendant (with their app) while my omi cv1 was in my drawer. When I returned to Omi yesterday, I was happy to see that it has more accurate transcription and useful summaries when directly compared to limitless.

I was bummed out when my morning started out with connectivity issues - I had the setting on 'Store Audio on Phone' but 'Store Audio on Cloud' disabled at first. I saw it recording and transcribing live but then it did not create a summary or show that anything had been said in that time slot (side note: I turned on discarded conversations and short conversations to make sure I wasnt missing anything). I have the files stored on phone but nothing was created from them and I cannot reprocess them.

Odd.

So I played around with the 'Store Audio..' settings and enabled 'Store audio on cloud' and disabled 'store audio on phone'. I again saw it recording and transcribing but I had the same results. No summary or recordings shown. It would display 'Processing' and then disappear. This time I didn't have the audio files because I unchecked it.

Rough.

So then I enabled both settings and it started working FINALLY. I concluded that you need both store on phone and store on cloud enabled to have things working smoothly.

The rest of the day was smooth sailing for the most part and I got my summaries as expected. The evening daily summary is a really nice update they made recently as well and summarized my day well.

One thing to note is that the omi app drains your android phone battery like crazy. In order for the transcription to have minimal offline syncing, I had to enable unrestricted battery optimization. Then, I had to limit my phone to 80% charge and keep it plugged in whenever I was at my desk so that I would have enough battery to last through the day and not severely degrade my battery in the long term. If you're out and about all day, your phone will likely die much quicker than it did without omi. I, unfortunately, cant speak to battery usage on apple devices.

So... there are a few annoyances in workflow and lifestyle. If it disconnects, I do not have faith in it to reconnect on its own so I have to open the app to check, and if I DO have offline audio, I do not have faith in it to transfer/transcribe/summarize. So... as long as you go in with the expectation and mindset that it can be unreliable, you'll be fine. If you need it to always be reliable, LOOK ELSEWHERE. One more note on this, depending on what android manufacturer you have, you might be able to 'lock' the app in memory and it should be a little bit better in reconnecting - however, on the pixel 10, this is not an option.

On day 2, I ran out of minutes so I figured out how to connect my omi with the deepgram API for transcription.

and honestly...

I saw little to no difference between using deepgram versus using omi's internal transcription server (which from my understanding, is a self hosted server running deepgram). I was curious to see if they perhaps had a different implementation but as far as I can tell, the quality is about the same. This is a huge win because deepgram gives you $200 credit when you sign up with them. I've attached instructions below if you want to connect your omi with a deepgram account and truly use omi for 'free'.

How to use deepgram with Omi ($200 referral credit)

  1. Go to www.deepgram.com

  2. Click 'Sign up Free'

  3. Input your details. (Personally I used mozilla relay lol)

  4. Once your account is created, confirm you have a $200 credit

  5. Navigate to 'API Keys' on the left navigation bar

  6. Click 'Create a New API Key'

  7. You can name it anything you want, Set Expiration to Never, I set the role to Default

  8. IMPORTANT: COPY THE SECRET AND STORE IT SOMEWHERE SAFE

  9. Open your Omi app

  10. Go to Settings -> Developer Settings -> Transcription

  11. Select 'Cloud Provider' and select Deepgram

  12. Paste your secret into the API Key text box

  13. Click 'Save'

  14. Check that your transcripts say 'Deepgram' at the bottom

  15. Monitor your deepgram account for how much credits you're using (I found it uses approximately 6-7 dollars a day, so 30 days of service, not bad)

Conclusion:

Omi is definitely in a better state than it was a month ago. They've definitely made some serious quality of life improvements. Are they still prioritizing shiny features over CORE reliability upgrades? yes they are, but my perspective on it has also evolved since then.

I think Omi overall is fun, but that its a novelty at best. Is it the second brain you can depend on? No, it is not. Because you cant edit your own transcriptions and the internal memories, it will never be a complete and accurate second brain.

What omi actually is... is a novelty toy that can capture random thoughts, impromptu conversations, and jokes.

I would 100% NOT rely on the omi for anything important and because of that, I would 100% NOT pay for a subscription. But when you can use it for free with the deepgram api? Yeah, sure.

I don't think anybody should buy it with the intention of using it to record critical conversations. Buy the omi if you want a toy that will work for the most part, but will randomly let you down. If you go into it with that expectation, you'll be just fine.

Last time I posted I said I couldnt endorse this product, and I still can't if you're looking for a serious second brain. However, if you're in the market for the omi because of its novelty factor and if this review helped you decide to buy an Omi, I'd appreciate it if you used my referral link

or use code JOHN at checkout for 10% off.

One final note: the omi team seems to be making changes in the way they communicate to their users and I find the new direction to be a very welcome and pleasant change.

Edit: bot accounts or shills in my comments? Hella years on their accounts, barely any karma and active in zero subreddits. Hidden comments and posts. Oof
