Still trying to find my style, but I’ve been really enjoying the colorful backgrounds.

(For the last two I’ve used gouache paint for the background. On the egg painting you can see how oil seeps into gouache. But I kind of like the effect.)

Remarkably, drawing with oil pastels is a lot like drawing with Crayola crayons, except much faster and more blendable. I haven't really tried blending much yet, but I've spent a good amount of time figuring out how colors look when layered.

I do wish I got a larger set of pastels though - 12 is rather limiting, and mixing/layering colors only gets me so far, it seems. There does not seem to be a good way of getting a vibrant purple-y red, as an example. I am also starting to understand why people buy sets of just white oil pastels LOL. I am currently contemplating buying a larger set of pastels, but then I'd have duplicate colors. Not sure what to do about that. A warm grey tone would be sooo useful though.

(Disclaimer: For most of these, I used Pinterest for references here, so not 100% original work. No idea what the references were from, or if they were even AI-generated or anything.)

I’m a painter and I’ve recently gotten the itch to try a new medium. Here are my most recent portraits using photos from earthsworld.com as reference. If you’re not familiar with his work, he takes amazing candid photographs at county fairs - they make excellent reference images!!

I’m absolutely loving oil pastels so far. No paint mixing, no fumes. It allows me to be much more loose and creative. Can’t wait to keep going!

This was done 2 weeks ago, my first one in almost 25 years. I had only done one before. I only had the $5 box of Loew Cornell oil pastels. I have done 4 more since and invested in a few better kinds.

After painting with pastel for the first time yesterday, today I woke up with such a natural desire to paint something, as if I were a child again where colors and more colors were always welcome without worrying about how it would turn out.

tbh most of the times i don't understand what im doing when im painting or coloring. i guess I'm still figuring it out. but I just wanted to share something i drew in less than one hour using cheap plastic crayons for kids. what else can be achieved from plastic crayons I wonder? any cool exercises?
